WM6: changing keyboard language

Hi all,
I'm trying to change the hardware keyboard language to Spanish in order to have all symbols correctly in my language.

I have tested:
1) Insert the Locale string with the language code -> it doesn't work.
2) Changing some registry keys with kbdus.dll and compime.dll, but not success at all (everything remained the same).

Somebody with a solution or any idea?

First solution should work, have you make a soft reset (with power button)

I can confirm that you can change key-mapping for keyboard with some registry modification.

create string named Locale and put 4-digit code of your keyboard (my german wizard with WM6.0 WWE ROM uses 0407)

2. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> 1 >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)

3. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)

4. exit registry editor and continue to operate your device for few minutes. After that, softreset. Caution: sometimes your wizard "forgets" to write modifications to your registry, so repeat this procedure 'till it works.

It's the same for me: in WM6 at least it doesn't work, at least with the spanish code 040a.

Moreover, this registry keys reference to another ones:

Haha!!!! Changed to 0407 and tataaaaa!!!! it works just fine. I tried each and every one of the keys. Apparently there is no special German(Switzerland) setup. I can tell because there is also the ß(its a kind of double S) -key on there. We would not use that in Switzerland. THX rebelyell

Yes I have tested it with 0407 and it seems that the keyboard is correct with the germany language... but no way with the spanish 040A key.

Finally I got the solution: for any strange reason the spanish with 040A code is not working, but it is with 0C0A code.

The danish code 0406 dont work, i will try the swedish and the some of the other scandinavish codes, here to day.

Did try the Danish, Swedish and Swedish_Finland and none of them did work. So for the moment i am just using the soft keyboard, when i need to write æøå in an message.

You have tried? Because i think that Locale only change keyboard distribution (QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY). Spanish and english have the same distribution.

Yes i did try the reg edit fix but no luck.. i think it is becouse the right files aint in the crossbow leak... I am just thinking if the files from wm5 will work in the wm6 build... My guess is that it wont... i did try the swedish hard keyboard fix cab there is on the ftp and that did break the keyboard totaly.. There was´t any respond from it after so har to reinstall...

i also tried it ab out 10 times till it worked. the string always disappeared after a softreset, and even bevore that the keyboard didn't change.

than i gave up and didn't try it anymore and it worked sometime later. don't know why and why it didn't disappear the last time... i just hope it will work after another reset (or chaning battery).

Wasnt looking to be working to pass to the French language (tried with 2 registry editors, soft reseted more than 10 times, etc.).

But it has finally worked after I removed the batery 5 seconds for a real softreset (I did it 2 times but the first it hasnt worked) or maybe it has worked cause i put the code 040C instead of 040c, i dont really know but i was really close to stop trying to make it work.

ps: The blue key doesnt work anymore with the space key (for accentuated chars etc.).

I had the same problem, got the German Keyboard working but autocompletion and the Sym Key were out of order.

So I found a note in a different posting that there are additonal entries in the Registry for the Keyboard layouts. So thats what I did:

As mentioned before by rebelyell I changed they Layout number to 0407:


1. HKCU >> ControlPanel >> Keybd
create string named Locale and put 4-digit code of your keyboard (my german wizard with WM6.0 WWE ROM uses 0407)

2. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> 1 >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)

3. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)


To get sym and autocompletion working I copied the regarding Folder in the Registry. Find your way to:


HKLM >> System >> CurrentControlSet >> Control >> Layouts


create a new folder called e0010407

Copy the Keys from the folder e0010409 to the new folder.

In my case, after working a bit the the Wizard an then Softresetting I got a quertz Keyboard including autocompletion (english) and working sym.txt

Next steps will be, changing the sym.txt to my likeing and figure a way out to get german autocompletion.

If you want to have the following with Windows Mobile 6 :

-french keyboard including accentuated character : 'é' 'è' 'ê' etc.
-french dictionnary word completion

just install the attached cab.

Normally the cab would also change the onscreen keyboard to french... but it doesn't... Maybe other registry keys are modified for wm5 and don't work with wm6... surely the cab should be fixed.

I'm not the author of this cab and don't know what it does... I think it comes from a guy called 'seb' from this forum : qtek9100.forum-pro.net

Anyway : nice job many thanks to him !

PS : if you know a good onscreen keyboard freeware that works with a french layout on wm6, please let me know.

It works, but not using, as previosly mention Danish, Swedish and Swedish_Finland layout. But if you use Norwegian_Bokmal (0414) it works perfect, or I havn't found anyting wrong..

I just cannot get this to work, i am using Regedit to do this. When is says add a string i am adding a dword, is this correct?

The other two seem straigth forward.

I have and XDA Mini S (UK) and everytime a reset it i lose all the reg settings. The middle and bottom set of keys on the keyboard show the wrong symbols, can anyone help?

I finaly found a way to get the nordic keyboard to work with WM6! This is what you have to do: Start "Registry Wizard" and change the keyboardlanguage to Norway-Bokn. and then press "apply" When the device restart the nordic keyboard will work ;) And if you start "Registry Wizard" again you wiill se that the keyboard language is Finish. I dont know why, and I dont care :P I hope this will help for all nordic wm6 users.

This makes my software keyboard work. But the hardware keyboard (Slide out) will not work...

Has anyone gotten both the software and hardware keyboard to change?

I have a danish Athena. The small keyboard is danish and working well. When I attach a USB keyboard, however, it used the US layout. Really odd. I have checked the registry settings. The Keyboard Layout>Preload says e0010409 (as in US) but it is actually danish. I have tried all combinations with no luck. Can anybody tell what the registry differences is between the softkeyboard, the internal hardware keyboard, and the external USB keyboard?

1. find REGISTRY EDITOR og start det
2. marker den der hedder HKEY_CURRENT_USER ........IKKE DOBBELTKLIK
3. tryk på ikonet med kikkerten, så kommer man ind i en søgefunktion og der skriver man 04 og trykker find.
4. jeg har ændret alt der før hed 0409 ( kan også være 0407 ) til 0414
5. for at ændre skal man dobbelt-klikke på de resultater man har fundet.
6. det er 3 steder jeg har gjort det..
7. derefter laver man en soft-reset, og vupti det virker, hvis ikke det virker første gang, så gå ind og se om det stadig er 0414 hvis det er det så bare soft-reset igen, hvis ikke så lav det om igen... DET VIRKER..

I have AEKMap installed. Everytime I flash a new WM6 rom - I automatically install AEKMap with the other stuff - and it works perfekt, and I don't have to take the time to change the reg. keys.

The program maybe looks a bit complicated at first - but it is actually pretty easy to get it to work.

nbd 8.3 + hades german language pack + rename the Sym.txt in sym.0409.txt

i once had the problem too, but my sym.txt was messed up by opening with the editor. maybe that´s the problem.

reinstall the hades german pack and try my sym.0409.txt:) i use it every time i flash new roms (most of the time NBD´s)
just copy and past it to windows folder

i have finally found the 100% working solution. there is one post in the whole language threads that describes an other registry key to edit:

"HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\"
-> copy the existing "e0010409" folder and create a new "e0010407" one.

running NBD 8.3 (8mb pagepool) with my CID-unlocked german device. hardware- and software keyboard working perfectly.

i did this registry changes in the beginning of my "flashing career" (i know i should join the 12 step program) :D

but i found out that the hades pack is perfect for me! so no more reg-changes!

This works with HTC Wizard/Qtek 9100 and the WM6r3 ROM:

1. HKCU >> ControlPanel >> Keybd >> Locale 0414

2. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> 1 >> Default e0010409
3. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> Default e0010409


Step 1 gets the nordic layout working, not changing 2 and 3 retains the Sym and autocompletion functionality.

After flashing my ROM to Schaps WM6 v3.60a, the pullout keyboard is missing the ~ and ; keys, all dot keys are shifted one position left. The ; symbol doe show up when the : symbol is pressed. Any suggestions.

I can confirm that you can change key-mapping for keyboard with some registry modification.

Here are instructions. I use Total Commander for editing registry. These instructions also work for WM5.0 AKU 3.2, AKU 3.3 and AKU 2.3 (tested).

------------------
1. HKCU >> ControlPanel >> Keybd
create string named Locale and put 4-digit code of your keyboard (my german wizard with WM6.0 WWE ROM uses 0407)

2. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> 1 >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)

3. HKCU >> keyboard layout >> Preload >> Default
change value of last 4 digits to your code (in my case, I changed e0010409 to e0010407)

4. exit registry editor and continue to operate your device for few minutes. After that, softreset. Caution: sometimes your wizard "forgets" to write modifications to your registry, so repeat this procedure 'till it works.

If you do only point 1 and 4 the Sym-Key still works and keyboard is changed. This is tested on wm6.

Hey this works perfectly! I used to use AEKmap but it slows things down a bunch I'm glad I found this.

There are tons of free registry editors. Total Commander is one of the best.

to find your locale hex code and follow the instructions at the top of the thread.

First solution, Open extended rom of Original WM5 ROM that came with your device and copy keybd_XXXXXX.XX.cab and re-run it, for sure it will work.

Second solution, if you have not backed-up original WM5 rom before upgrade try with this code 0416 . it worked for me.

Does anyone have the issue, that the sym.txt is located in the ROM and cannot be changed? In order to switch to the german sym.txt I need to change it but since it is in the ROM, it is read-only - I can neither change or delete the file, nor replace it with a different version...

Try Totalcommander to change the sym.txt,
or just copy this one over the existing one.

if you need a sym.txt, not a sym.0409.txt than just rename it.

Finally I got the solution: for any strange reason the spanish with 040A code is not working, but it is with 0C0A code.

Well i just cured my autocomplete problem thanks to dromico.

I first done all these 3 steps below for uk layout, but then lost the autocomplete function, so i put steps 2 and 3 back to 0409, and just set step 1 to 0809 and it works fine now :)

That`s so curious, Using Caps button and "Commas" button, it returns the correct value = *

But without caps, it returns a point = .

In the Wizards sold in Brazil, there is a little fix in the extended rom from Claro (and don't know if the problem is the same with Tim's). I used to have one wizard from claro and when I put other ROMs I had the same problem until I noticed two CABs there that did the Job (one sets the locale to 0416 and the other fixes the comma issue). I would first install the one with "Brightstar" in the name and then the other.

I have deleted most of my files for the wizard. But luckily, I still have both CABs in my old backup CDs.

I will post them in some minutes.

You have to edit the sym.0409.txt file. I did what is mentioned by MikeCal in this webpage (http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/03/27/562162.aspx#565095) and it worked (just changed sym.txt for sym.0409.txt in WM6 ROMs).

If yes, uncheck "read only" in file properties (in File Explorer; you may need Total Commander for that if File Explorer is not able to) and try to delete sym.txt and soft reset. 4. After soft reset, copy again the file sym.txt from \Windows folder to your computer.
5. Open the file with Windows Notepad. Check to see if it is the original version. If it is not, ask for somebody you know that has the same ROM as you :p
6. Edit the file to suit your needs. Do not copy and paste all the content of your original file. If you want, copy line by line. But try not to modify the last lines with less used symbols (my guess is that there is something about them that, if modified, messes with the process).

One more question to complete my QTEK A9100 configuration.
The Volumn Slice Buttom didn`t work correctly. In WM5 When I received a call and want to turn the ringtone stop, I just slow down the button and it stops the ringtone. But now, with WM6 XDA version it doesn`t works.

If you can help me on it, everything on my Qtek is gonna be all right!

It's really cool , as it supports T9 for these languages as well.
