Ok apologies for cross posting.... but can you obsessive flashers please read this:

Well so far you are the only one who wrote that and was "kind" enough to repost it again. I believe each person here has the brain to make their own judgement. If they like PDAViet ROM and flash "a lot" so be it. There is no point of trying to convince the others that PDAViet ROM is not good up to your standard. Your "high" standard might not be the same as the others.

It would be best if the developers of these PDAVIET images posted here, then people could ask them questions, and they could respond to bugs etc.

They can carry on posting images on their forum, but I think it's important to realise these roms are posted on a non-english forum, and many people here are flashing it blindly, not knowing if there are things to watch out for, patches or registry imports that should be run, and so on.

I just think it's dangerous the amound of hype surrounding these images when nobody is posting any proper change logs, or able to answer what is changing from one rom to the next.

It's unlikely anything bad will happen, but at the moment, someone saying "wow this is so fast" seems to be enough in people's mind to warrant a reflash.

It's all getting a bit silly imo.

Hi imisim,
and that's exactly why I wrote the disclaimer, I obviously didn't write it clearly enough, sorry! I'm saying I don't have a problem with any of these people posting the ROMS (although it would be nice if they produced changelogs saying what they were improving), I don't believe there's any problem with any of the ones they have posted!

The thing I'm trying to warn of was that when people are posting random rapidshare and other file upload service links "HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE???" For example I haven't seen any of these recent ROM images posted with an MD5 sum that can be checked for validity.

Sorry if I didn't make my point clear! :)

I believe each person here has the brain to make their own judgement.
and I fear you may be too optimistic there! :)

Cheers and best wishes,
Ivor.

I agree with you however you need to keep in mind that the PDAViet ROM are leased in their site which is Vietnamese.

The change log is there but in Vietnamese.

The problem is not PDA Viet because their ROM is published for their members and most of them are Vietnamese. The link to their ROM as being posted by the xda-developers members and unfortunately most don't read Vietnamese :)

I have to agree. I'm interested in trying one of the WM6 ROMs on my wizard/xda mini s, but with the frantic whirlwind of posts, follow-ups, and the almost random naming conventions, the whole BBS seems to have become a frenzy and it's now left me at a complete loss as to which, if any, WM6 ROMs I should have a go with.

Add to that a huge amount of "people should just read the threads" posts, combined with maybe 20 topics, each of 20+ pages of crap to read through, and I'm now probably too nervous about bricking my device to try. For example, do I flash the orwell1984 one, and if so, do I need to roll in the WWE stuff, or will it just work? Should I go for the pdaviet ROMs, or not - and if so which is the best?

Is it any wonder people are left scratching their heads? :(

although it would be nice if they produced changelogs saying what they were improving.

The change log is on their site and here is a rough translation

- ROM v2.00.04 PV was based on ROM v2.00.03 PV
- Aggressive Reg editing.
- Fix RAM leaked and device hung.
- More available RAM (above 24,25Mb) and guarantee faster
- Some additional improvement and add-on.

Sorry Alan but this is the best ROM out there, BUT you need to understand how to use this - let me begin: (in no particular order)

To use ozvga you must load midgets version of ozvga for crossbow.
The following applications WILL HANG YOUR UNIVERSAL:
SPB backup (BUT YOU CAN USE SUNNYSOFT V4)
SPB Pocket Plus (sorry!)

Now you don't need anymore the CB dialer skin, microsoft voice command 1.6 or new menu for wm5 because THEY ARE ALL IN THE ROM! (But don't restore your old WM 5 new menu settings file or you will hang the device!)

This little Vietnamese beauty also comes with a new version of XP shutdown, an amazing smart dialer, remote desktop and streaming media player!

The dfferences in the PRO version are:

The addition of the remote desktop & streaming media player
Added to settings is a customer feedback form and in connections is another icon to the communications manager.
Voice commander is mapped to the record button

Other things YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Soft resetting WM 6 is sometimes a two stage affair. This DOES NOT appear to be a bug but rather an (early) characteristic. If you need to reset 3 times or more the application you just loaded is not compatable.

Activesync 4.5 beta has embedded smarts for WM 6! When you synchronise for the first time it will ask you suddenly if you want to maintain wireless conectivity while docked to active sync.

There is also a newer bluetooth stack & system tray icon. If you use TomTom for example you no longer need to map the incoming port. The option has been removed anyway.

To summarize - this version of WM6 is blisteringly snappy, full of great features BUT NEW... IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK THE SAME AS WM5 AND NOT USE ALL THE SAME APPLICATIONS. But the overall result is fantastic in my opinion.

Simon Jacobs

Sorry Alan but this is the best ROM out there, BUT you need to understand how to use this - let me begin: (in no particular order)

Yup, I have that quallification, see:

[x] Knows how to flash a ROM
[x] Knows how to use a ROM
[x] Has been using Crossbow for well over a month
[ ] Blindly flashes every new ROM and prodly proclaims it to be the best thing ever
[ ] Believes all the hype
[x] Cynical, and sometimes upsets people

To use ozvga you must load midgets version of ozvga for crossbow.
The following applications will hang your universal:
SPB backup (BUT YOU CAN USE SUNNYSOFT V4)
Avantgo

I don't use it, but thanks.

Now you don't need anymore the CB dialer skin, microsoft voice command 1.6 or new menu for wm5 because THEY ARE ALL IN THE ROM! (But don't restore your old WM 5 new menu settings file or you will hang the device!)

Urm, this is the case with all of them, except WM5 New Menu, which is simply a utility some of the builders chose to include or exclude.

This little Vietnamese beauty also comes with a new version of XP shutdown, an amazing smart dialer, remote desktop and streaming media player!

Urm, so they added XP shutdown, the rest was already in the base build.

The dfferences in the PRO version are:

The addition of the remote desktop & streaming media player
Added to settings is a customer feedback form and in connections is another icon to the communications manager.
Voice commander is mapped to the record button

There are no additions there, it's all in the base build.

Other things YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Soft resetting WM 6 is sometimes a two stage affair. This DOES NOT appear to be a bug but rather an (early) characteristic. If you need to reset 3 times or more the application you just loaded is not compatable.

No, really, it's not. That is a bug, I don't have to reset my device 2 or 3 times, never have. It means something is wrong, and it's a bad ROM build if this is common.

Activesync 4.5 beta has embedded smarts for WM 6! When you synchronise for the first time it will ask you suddenly if you want to maintain wireless conectivity while docked to active sync.

There is also now a fantastic new Bluetooth - system tray icon - LONG OVERDUE!

A fantastic new Bluetooth icon that anyone could add with a registry hack you mean?

If I bother to make a few registry changes to Indra's ROM with 1 or 2 new icons, will everyone bow down and worship me for being TEH ROM MARSTAR!!111

To summarize - this version of WM6 is blisteringly snappy, full of great features BUT NEW... IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK THE SAME AS WM5 AND NOT USE ALL THE SAME APPLICATIONS. But the overall result is fantastic in my opinion.

Regards,
Simon Jacobs

Seriously guys, come on, nobody has done anything great since the original Helmi image, since then, every single one has been a few reg hacks and addition of freeware apps that anyone of us could do to any other build by spending 10 seconds importing a regristry file in.

This LATEST GREATEST rom simply has the memory enhancements that Indra released first, for all I knew, they took his settings, who knows?

This is no faster than the Indra ROM, if you think it is, you're kidding yourself.

Sorry.

How can you have a ram leak in WM 6?? This is persistent storage working correctly. Stop posting such nonsense!

Urm, sorry, you do know the difference between RAM and persistent storage don't you?

This may be down to the language barrier, so I will avoid laughing, but persistent storage is where your files, and applications are *stored*. They actually need RAM to run.

If you have a memory leak (which all of the WM6 builds suffer from at the moment), there is less RAM available for applications to run.

The longer you use the device, more and more RAM is lost to the leakage, until it reaches a point where you have to soft-reset the device.

Some apps can force reclaimation of some of this memory, but it's not 100%, so you will still lose RAM .

This is in fact a bug, not anything to do with persistent storage.

What's a potton?

If you mean button, it's the one with the phone + eye symbol on the top row of the keyboard.

I hope you didn't mean button though, as that would mean you have one of the most expensive ppc phones on the market, and are messing about flashing it, and don't even know what the buttons do. ;)

Thank you for this tip.

Pitty it is the final release!
Amazing fast rom, but still a view bugs I noticed:

-Keyboard Imput/Word Completion,
(if you deselect it it keeps coming back after softreset),

-Button Lock (same issue, it doesn't stay locked after softreset),

-Can't store Email attachements to storage card (Storage instead)

Improvements:

-Much faster than al the other Crossbow roms,
it's incredible how fast my apps are opening now!

-No lockups after softreset (so far).

-Camera quality better.

Extra apps installed are:

-WM5Storage,
-Wireless Modem,
-ShutXP,
-VoiceCommand.

Cheers...

Leo :)

Ok if anyone's interested, following a very detailed taking apart of the ROM.... PDAVIET.04 PRO appears to be a (very) slightly newer base WM6 image! OK.

It looks like it's one one step closer to a release. (Personally I'm not keen on the apps changed icons I'd rather have a 5k app than a 165k app, so I'm going to make myself a version with the original HTC icons, but that's just me.)

The only other thing to be aware of is that this new build ships with something called "sqmservice" which runs as a service and appears to have code to send updates to "sqm.microsoft.com" - This is the Microsoft Customer Experience program server. It's supposed to be anonymous and not record who you are, and it's supposed to only run if you have the option turned on.... but it's something you should be aware of that wasn't in any of the other ROMs and you may want to disable it.

Cheers and happy flashing,
Ivor.

Hi,

The brightest and most brilliant idea is to lash back to the ROM u were using avantgo with and then continue using it....

It would be a tough job to create ROM tailor made just because one application is not running.

im running midgets vanilla at mo, have a few mem leaks avg about 16mb programme mem with nothing running :(

If you restore a backup from a different ROM, you will lose all of the advantages updated registry settings will bring to the device.

In other words, it's a pointless exercise, you would not gain anything by reflashing.

I think you can easily use the autorun feature to do the automation of your necessary apps. In my case, I just put the Autorun.exe and config.txt to my extrom, but all my apps are stored in SD card.
Following is the example of config.txt:

LOCK:Disabled
CAB: \Storage Card\AutoRun\Signed_DisableSecurity.CAB
CAB: \Storage Card\AutoRun\PocketSlides.CAB
...
...
CAB: \Storage Card\AutoRun\PocketXpdf.CAB
CAB: \Storage Card\AutoRun\ExtROM_Unlock.CAB
RST: Reset

Note: Make sure that you have the apps available to the pointed folder in SD card and they will be deleted after the successfull execution.

Note: Make sure that you have the apps available to the pointed folder in SD card and they will be deleted after the successfull execution.[/QUOTE]

you can change the properities of the file to be READ ONLY in this case they will not be deleted....

AlanJC

Or just change the registry key, and it will never delete them.

HKCR\cabfile\Shell\open\command = 'wceload.exe "%1"'

to

HKCR\cabfile\Shell\open\command = 'wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete'

Or use a handy little exe called cabinstall.exe (google can help you find this)

Was on an old aku 2 rom as i remember
Having only "played" about with it for 10 minutes (basically to get all my contacts etc back synced) I have to say the speed makes it like having a new device.
well worth it, even if you do loose video calling!

Remove Icons from the Taskbar

To Remove Battery:

HKLM\services\power\?ShowIcon === change from 1 to 0 (zero).

To Remove Screen Rotation:

HKLM\services\screenrotate\?ShowIcon === change from 1 to 0 (zero)

To Remove the Wireless connection manager

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\?WirelessMgr\keep and change the DWORD Keep to 0, soft-reset

If you remove all three icons, taskbar will be removed and more space on today screen

Hi guys
I’ve downloaded and installed Crossbow (v2.00.04_PDAVIET_UNI_PRO). My impressions were strange, of course i was surprised with new style of os, but in GENERAL there was NOTHING different from previous rom (aku3.3). so i’ll try to review my impressions about half-day working with new rom. But here i’ll post only the problems were not discussed in the forum:
( + ) Wonderful design
( + ) Very fast
( + ) Almost of my favorite apps work (including spb p+, which was mentioned as crashing)
( – ) in my country, there are no 3g telephony, so i map to video call button some function (my favourite was spb pocket plus Alt+Tab which was very good solution to switch between apps with 100% windows appearance). But now this button is not available because there is no 3g telephony support. What a pity… =(
( – ) WM5torage 1.73 is included into the rom, but i can do nothing here! There are two devices: TrueFS (DOC M-Systems) and DSK1: (SD Memory Card). When i try to activate removable storage (press Activate), system alerts “can’t open the selected card/disk device”. I tried many times it after soft-reset, but it didn’t work. I use my pda as a removable storage very often and i am very upset that this function does not work properly.
( – ) Very unpleasant was for me the fact that camera is still making bad fotos, ie. after capture it changes picture to be white, blur and very ugly. Can anybody take back the old camera? (for example, in 1.13.64 where was no such terrible “autocorrection”)
( – ) Pocket Office does not support my new office 2007 documents (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). In general, there changed nothing since winmob 2003 (except progress bar while opening)
( – ) During boot, im asked to enter pin code from my sim card, but if i do not enter it during 1 minute, lcd comes black (light turns off), and only soft reset can make my device alive again
( – ) left and right soft keys work after a little delay, it makes a feeling of slow system, but for example, start menu opens in a moment
( – ) in sms, left soft-key is now “delete” instead of “new”. Hmmm…
So there are very few pros and lots of cons here. I hope somebody can help me to solve some problems i described. If not, i will be to downgrade to some aku3.5 rom which is not very good solution after having installed crossbow. So,
best wishes,
L2tp.

( – ) in my country, there are no 3g telephony, so i map to video call button some function (my favourite was spb pocket plus Alt+Tab which was very good solution to switch between apps with 100% windows appearance). But now this button is not available because there is no 3g telephony support. What a pity… =(

Its a pity that you people just blindly flash a rom without reading about its features on other websites where reviews are posted. Crossbow doesnt have video telephony yet. So even people who are developing crossbow will only be testing video telephony now.

L2tp, do you know what is that feature? If you dont know just dont mess with it and screw up your device. just to give you an idea of what it is...
WM5Storage will export the flash memory card inside the smartphone as usual USB Mass Storage device (ordinary "usb disk") - effectively turning smartphone into flash reader (albeit USB 1.0 only, and not very fast).

( – ) Pocket Office does not support my new office 2007 documents (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). In general, there changed nothing since winmob 2003 (except progress bar while opening)

Have you read anywhere that crossbow will support Office 2007 documents? If the developers dont include it, then the people customising the ROM would not be able to do it too

( – ) During boot, im asked to enter pin code from my sim card, but if i do not enter it during 1 minute, lcd comes black (light turns off), and only soft reset can make my device alive again

This one is device specific. When I tried this ROM on my device, it never asked for any pin and so many of them who have tried it also havent reported anything like this. So that means it is something with your device and not the OS

( – ) left and right soft keys work after a little delay, it makes a feeling of slow system, but for example, start menu opens in a moment

Left and Right softkeys have always been a bit slow in Universal independent of the ROM version or type.

( – ) in sms, left soft-key is now “delete” instead of “new”.

Well, having "Delete" as left softkey is not a big problem. if you dont like it, nobody can develoop a ROM just to change the left softkey for sms. What you can do is to apply a registry hack where you can change the left softkey caption to "New"

Hope this helps....

+ Love the contact name speech recognizer (no training needed!)
+ A2DP finally working with my Jabra BT620s (although registry tweak still needed, but previous WM5 ROMs refused to work even with tweak applied)
+ Speedier than WM5 AKU 3.5 (Helmi's), but maybe because it is a clean install
+ Camera seems to produce better images, but I shall do more tests
+ Love the new timeline at the top in the agenda view in Calendar
- Button lock disabled after soft reset

1. install PHM Regedit (or any other registry editor)
2. go down to this location HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
3. create a key "40C8"
4. Go to the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C5
5. Select all values under that key and copy it
6. Paste it under the new key "40C8" you just created in step 3
7. rename it to suit a readable name like "Backlight"
8. Softreset using some app like psShutXP or pocket plus (and NOT using the hole)
8. now, you can configure this button as u do normally (for the rest of the buttons)

wm6 is really amazing in speed but no so much cleaning non used memory. I compared the steps followed in aku 3.2 and in wm6 installing some things and honestly the memory in wm6 decrease more fast. After several tests, using on both systems some applications (tt6, pinformant) the system need more resets for free memory on wm6. The applications from oxio or other cleanning non used appl or memory really provide small amount of memory.

In order to earn constant memory:
Check the windows startup... there could be sddaemon, poutlook, voicecmd... they are not necessarily need to start with windows... voicecmd can eat up to 2 megs ram.
Use itaskmgr if you have less ram... it will show which processes have not been shut down, and you can kill them manually.
Do not use so much today programs... they eat also a lot of ram
Try truetoolbar as task manager and program launcher, it consumes 40-70KB ram only.
Tweak the unused today items... I think sktools can do it easily.

I use this rom and during normal use my amount is 20-25 megs... sometimes I use oxios hibernate (put on a hardware button).

Good luck

I have paired my nokia car kit up to my Universal, no problems, I get in the car and it connects to it ok. If someone calls me, no problem all through the car kit.

My problem is that if I press and hold the button on the car kit Voice Dialler used to kick in and I could call out, but now the button isn't working. If I have the device out of the cradle and press the button on the universal, then Voice commander works.

This all worked a treat on Helmi's 3.5AKU. Not sure whats going wrong.

......yet no one will answer my question about getting Blackberry connect to work with crossbow!.......anyone?

blackberry doesn't work since aku 3.5, (wm5) or wm6, or more exactly works in the first install but after softreset or if you use explorer to surf internet, it is died. I have tried many diferents ways but no solution by the moment. I think has to be something stupid, as previous soft reset it is perfect. May be the sw checks windows version, priorities, who knows...

Anyone else having a problem with Wifi in this ROM? I doubt it's a problem in the ROM, but when I try to access my school's private wifi network (logging in through IE), I can never access any pages through it. The login details are correct, but the error I keep getting is 'the connection was lost'...although the icon is sayign it's still connected to the access point. Happens allover campus. It does work with other PDAs because my roomate has a Cingy 8125 and another friend has the Sprint PPC6700 and can connect fine.

Maybe it is ROM related...?

That's the only gripe I have as of now. Well, that and the fact that this is only a tri-band phone (HUGE pain in my ass).

Otherwise, great ROM. VERY stable. No lockups so far, very fast boots. Only a few periods of sluggishness, but nothing serious.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I really like the skin of the app included in the rom. As I'm currently using a different rom, I would like to have that particular skin in my Uni and I would really appreciate if someone can post the cab or skin.

TIA

Ain't it strange?! I copied the exe file from PDAVIET rom and am using Helmi rom now, previously it was working with the fancy-looking skin! Now it is the usual Windows XP look-alike skin, what's different? Was there any parameter with the .lnk file? Or it is just something else?

Mysterious!!

That's one of the most amusing xda-devs posts I've read for a long time.

You forgot the mandatory

OS: 5 Various other changes that we aren't entirely sure what they do but if your machine boots then we must have done something good!
