Crossbow Icons?

Is it possible to extract crossbow icons from wizard rom and share icons here so that i can put them into magician?
anybody with a wizard provide me with crossbow icons...

Max, the Crossbow roms are widely available. Why not dump and extract the icons yourself? You don't need a working device (ie Wizard or other Crossbow device). I suggest using the Universal's rom anyway, nicer icons, higher resolution.

thx vijay for ur efforts..but the pack doesnt have icons of applications like activesync and msn messenger ..internet explorer etc.
plus how to put .ico files on magician?
i dont want to use any software .. i want to replace original ones with that of crossbow's...is it possible?

max414: you're going to have to learn how to do this stuff yourself... you will need to dump the rom, dump the icons for each required dll and exe, and then use an icon editor or resource editor to replace your existing icons with the new ones.

There's a lot of pain in the ass steps there... nothing hard, just time consuming. I don't have time to bash it all out :(

For your job, you need a resource editor. Look up Resource Hacker on google.

The rom - where you get it is up to you.
The rom can be dumped in the usual way, with mamaich's romtools:
Prepare_imgfs the rom
This will dump the files. From the files, dump the icons.

Guys, you're going to have some minor difficulties I think.

Check out the roms that have been made with custom icons, but generally AFAIK you will have to replace the original resources within the existing dll/exe files using Resource Hacker (btw, Visual Studio 2005 is a better resource editor). The complication is that you may have to resign the files, and then get them on to your device - which means either hoping you can overwrite the existing rom files, or cook a new rom.

Ok Thanks I know where I stand against all the developers here,I think this rom dumping is too much for a noob like me,I would rather give up the idea of having crossbow icons on my magician.

Max, no problem. For you the job is a bit easier in that you don't have to sign files for the magician. Frankly, just give it a go!
Dump the rom, grab any .exe file and drop it into a resource hacker. Browse around and you'll learn a lot!

OK I am downloading pv2 rom for universal now,i have already got resource hacker,and mamaich WM5 ROM editing tool, now what i have to do?

After hours of reading and experimenting I came up with no results.Thats what i did
1.I copied prepare_imgfs.exe to the rom directory(where universal rom is placed including file nk.nbf)
2.Via command prompt i wrote fallowing command
D:\Rom>prepare_imgfs.exe nk.nba [-nosplit]
it started like
Searching for IMGFS start.....Not found!
Please tell what I am doing wrong.

Which rom did you use, and what did you do to get the rom image out of the installer?
Sure you're using the right filenames?

Also, you should just type

prepare_imgfs.exe nk.nba
or
prepare_imgfs.exe nk.nba -nosplit


By convention, the [ ] mean that piece of command line is optional. In this case, just try it with or without -nosplit. Whichever gives you more files.
There should be something like 2000 files approx extracted into sub directories.

Max....just forget it....why dont you just use the AKU3.3 Rom?
They have the Crossbow icons in it and is a very good and stable rom!!

Not to offend you....but if you already have so much trouble with dumping a Rom, then you're a long long way from
putting changing icons in DLL files.
Why would you do so much work, if the 3.3 Rom already has ALL Crossbow icons in it?

p.s. Together with Faria it was almost 4 hours of work to integrate Crossbow icons all the way into the Rom (dumping, changing, signing and things like that)!

Trust me...the time it will take to download a 60MB rom is much less then changing everything yourself (and finding out how to do it...). Even with a 10kb/s internet connection :D

Max, I know it sounds like we're being mean, but this kinda hacking is complicated. It's not difficult, but just takes several steps.
Sure, you don't have to sign for the Magician, but no one really does much hacking on the Magician roms now, so we can't do it for you I think.

So as they say, grab a Rom you can dump, decompile the rom into files, then use a resource editor or icon extractor to extract the icons you want, and then do the reverse process to get the Crossbow icons back into your Magician files.

However, you will still have the problem of getting those files into your magician and being used, which is complicated again. I suggest you use Wisbar or similar - a lot less work for a similar or better effect!

As a person that has done this in the past for the first time, i would say go with the new rom as you will need to know what you are doing when changing the icons. I have in the past crashed my PPC cus i was dump and resized the icons to the wrong size and the PPC did not like it one bit!! It is easy bt not so!!! And the people that are telling you this are the people that do it everyday!

As above it is hard to do the icons for wizard cus they have to be signed!!! It can be done, but it is just not worth it as you can just put the rom on your PPC and it would have the icons!!!

Vijay i have read the whole thing on wiki about wizard, i know my device is G4 but does it need to be CID unlocked for rom installation or not, im not sure on that, i need proper guidance on this as i do not want my wizard to be bricked.

Thanks Vijay on this but it would better if you could just take out the crossbow icons from the rom and make a cab file because you know how to do it and it would be easier for you, than like us noobs.

Samy, I don't have access to this stuff at work, and I work very long days.

I've writen as much as anyone could need to know, at least twice, in the thread above.
Get rom, decompile rom, get resource hacker, extract icons, get target files, inject new resources, make new rom (or muis)

Some of those stages just are NOT easy on your device, and are rom specific. And they all take time.
There is no magic cab anyone can make, you will normally have to make a whole new rom or make relevant muis.

Frankly, I don't know what I'm talking about. faria is God in this, and he's said it will take time and effort.

There are articles on this stuff already. I can't point you to them, because I haven't read them. But read and learn and try. I'm really sorry, I can't help, and I understand if the other guys can't help either... there's a lot of work, for each rom, for each exe, for each resource :(

Ok I have managed to get the idea...I even changed power icon(in control panel) of my magician to look like one on the crossbows using resource hacker..
Now I know how to replace icons but the thing which I cant seem to do is to decompile the rom into files.Thats the main problem.I was hoping if any body could assist me on that.

And a screenshot of crossbow control panel will be helpful so that I know which Icon is for what

I got the file imgfs _raw_data.bin and then i wrote the the command view_imgfs it created a dump directory bit was of 300kb size only including emoticons nothing else....
what i have done wrong?

I replaced some of my magician icons with crossbow icons.But i cant find the rest of the files like Buttons in settings menu and all the other.Where to get them so that i can replace their icons with crossbow's?
where are they placed in the windows folder?And system doesnt allow some files to be copied like pword.exe it says that file is in rom.What would i have to do to copy them to my computer?

Ady, you don't "install" it, it's just a file containing the icons for use in your own tools etc. But reading this thread, you'll see that the generall recommendation is that cooking your own rom with new icons is barely worth the effort, and is complicated. So far, there's no "one click" solution to doing that. I suggest installing a rom that's already had the icons inserted.
