View Full Version : Yet Another Prophet Newbie...CID lock, ROM, other Questions!

Hi All,

I picked up a Dopod 818pro recently and have been keen on flashing the latest rom since mine's been preloaded with a lot of 3rd party stuff I want to remove.

I've been able to figure out that I have a G3 model and my internal backup battery is dead (date resets after only a few seconds on battery removal). That's fine and all... I've read through the wiki and everything is pretty straight forward. But I do have a few Q's:

1) Is there a way I can tell whether or not my prophet is CID locked?

2) What's the difference between the Main ROM and the Extended Rom and the Radio ROM? Are there other ROMS?

3) How do the above 3 ROMS relate to things I see in the About or Device Information screens?

4) Can anyone tell me what exactly is loaded on my Prophet?

WM OS 5.1.195 (Build 14847.2.0.0)

ROM version: 2.15.13.27 WWE
ROM date: 3/9/06
Radio version: 02.19.21
Protocol version: 4.1.13.09
ExtROM version: 2.15.13.121

5) Is there a way to determine the build date of the device?

6) When backing up my ROM, does this include the extended and radio ROMs?

7) How exactly is the memory segmented? As I understand it, it's 128 RAM, 64 ROM. Is the RAM non-volitile memory? why do I only see 44 megs available?

FYI: the prophet is from asia loaded with an "english" OS. So it was running a chinese version of WM5 but has been reflashed.

That's it for now. Thanks in advance!

Okay.... So after reading a shitload more posts I was able to answer a few of my questions:

1) still looking to find out how to see if my device is CID locked

2)Main ROM = WM OS
ExtROM = Patches that get applied to OS after hardreset
RadioROM = Controls the radio only.

3) WM OS version = About screen
ROM ExtROM, RadioROM version = Device Information

4) I figured out that my prophet is running the latest official dopod rom update. AKU 2.0

5) Still looking to figure out the build date of device!

6) Dumping the ROM to SD card will dump Main ROM + Ext ROM. Radio ROM doesn't get dumped

7) Still not entirely sure how the memory works. The OS image resides in the 64meg ROM right? then how is the 128 RAM is divided up to give 47.5mb storage and 44mb program ram? How does the pool size or extRom fit into all of this?

Sorry if all of this seems elementary for some of you... But any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Anybody willing to chime in? Just the following three questions left!

2) n/a. you must already have found rom date -- afaik this is the only info of this type
3)http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/5.0/memory_management.htm
hope you'll find answers to all your questions

Nice link waterdeep

I think Mr_Yellow is confused between RAM & ROM. For DOPOD its 128MB ROM & 64MB RAM... :)

That was a great link waterdeep!

I'm not too confused about RAM vs ROM.. I'm more confused about how does 128 ROM + 64 RAM = 47.5 Storage + 44 Program ram (as stated in the memory management tool)?

The ROM (~50 megs) is stored in the 128 ROM, but that leaves 78 megs left. how does that continue to get reduced to 47.5? Then, how does the 64 megs of RAM get reduced to 44 total?

In WM5 memory management differs from WM2003. IN WM5 the RAM is used by running programs like in a PC (nothing is stored permanently). The ROM is used by the firmware, by programs installed in Main Memory (as opposed to Storage Card) and the remainder is used for your Storage. This is the main reason why WM5 has permanent storage!

That's why you only have 47.5MB Storage out of 128MB ROM available. The OS uses more than 1/3 of it, plus some extended rom programs.

I don't mean to be arguementative, but hear me out:

so 128 ROM - OS (~50mb) - ExtROM (~30mb) = 48 Megs. Okay! This is starting to make more sense.

BUT

64 RAM - ??? = 44 megs total.

Why does the OS report a total of 44 mb on RAM? Where'd the 20 megs go? Is it reserved for OS only?

THanks,

THanks,

The minute WM5 boots up it starts consuming RAM immediately, again like a normal PC. That's where the RAM is gone.
