Here is a port selection utility I wrote to configure GMM and other WM5 GPS API based applications on the Smartphone platform. Unzip, copy to your phone and run to select comm port for GMM to use.

Tested on HTC S620 but should be ok for DASH and other WM5 smartphones.

Enjoy!

NOTE: Changing the "enabled" state requires a phone restart to take effect including the initial run

Very nice work. If I hadn't already done it on my dash i'd test it for you. But I don't see why things would differ.

Good job, this should be very helpful to others.

Hello folks!

Could someone please let me know how to setup the application - like the details on how to choosee the COM port?

I have installed the GoogleMaps and while installing the GPSCOM application, I had set it "Enabled" and selected 'COM6' and saved. Still, when trying to connect from GMM, I am getting the message, unable to locate the GPS device.

Any Help?
Thanks.

I have a blackjack and the registry is locked for editing. When I ran this program I got an error along the same lines.

An error occured creating the registry key.

Is there a way to unlock the registry?

If I recall there was a forum member with a Moto Q that reported it worked for him/her. Check back near the start of this thread and perhaps try contacting them ?

You need to set up a new outgoing com port to your GPS device.
Go into the communication manager.
Select settings/bluetooth settings
Menu/ COM Ports
Menu/ New Outgoing Port
Select your bluetooth device and make the port number the same as you used in the GPSCOM app (I think it defaults to 6). Then when you run google maps and track location (GPS) it should totally work.

You need to app unlock to run unsigned software which needs to edit the registry. See the first link here:

Did you create a com port for your BT device first ?

Start/Settings/Connections/Bluetooth.
Make sure Bluetooth is set to "On".
Menu/Devices
Menu/New
Select your GPS device from the list and press Next.
Enter the passkey for the Bluetooth GPS. For example, 12345678.
Next
You should get a message box saying "Your Smartphone has connected".
OK
Next
Check the "Serial port" checkbox.
Done

Menu/COM Ports
Select your GPS.
Menu/New Outgoing Port.
Select your device and press Select.
You will see a COM port that has been chosen for your GPS. For example, COM6.
Done

When I go through the BT manager I can't even see the ports....

BTW I can't even seem to get Live Search to work without GPSCOM. If I COM 1 on the LS options it calls the BT manager, I select the BT device then it hangs. If I change the Port to COM 6 it doesn't even launch the BT manager.

Hi
pchronos thanks for this little tool! Its nice when stuff just works!
I had problems getting the GPS support working in Google Mobile Maps via my bluetooth Holux GPSlim 236, it simply wouldn't find it whereas my TomTom installation does. Your thread explained the reasons why.
I have an MDA Vario II. Its clearly not a smartphone but it doesn't have the GPS applet in the settings menu. I've also had access to lots of other WM5 PDA phone devices (mostly the Orange SPV range) and not a one of them has this GPS applet you speak of anywhere!
Don't ask me why except T-Mobile obviously pulled it on the basis that it doesn't come with a GPS unit built-in. Short sighted? I think so.

However your little app works a treat, Google Mobile Maps GPS function sprung into life after running your program.
Thanks muchly, cos I also tried making the relevant GPS Intermediate Driver reg settings with PHM RegEdit, but this failed to even install. Either PHM wrote a VERY poor installer, or T-Mobile has done something to prevent it's install, or ActiveSync is playing up even between reboots.

SO - Its worthwhile expanding this tools scope beyond that of mere smartphones to include PDA phones with the GPS option missing (I'd wager a lot).
Thanks again!

I have downloaded the appunlock and successfully installed it and the GPSCOM programs. I have set the GPSCom to com 6 and created the outgoing port to com 6. Google maps still says no gsp. I then removed the Bluetooth gps device and reconnected it. Now there is a empty screen for services where you check the com port box. Looking at the registry there is no entry for 'Services' under the GPS device. Does anybody know the correct entries to put the GSP com services back?

Good news, Google have updated the app so you can specify a com port.

http://www.google.com/gmm/winm

Its in Menu->Options->Track Location Settings and there you can manually set the com port to use.

And this new version is much more stable in terms of the network connection. I havn't seen it mistakenly pop up the message about requiring a data connection yet.

Follow these EXACT STEPS, and you will be able to get your MOTOROLA Q VERIZON EDITION working with GPS tracking on GOOGLE MAPS.

Make sure you have a Bluetooth GPS Receiver.

#1) Go to hellmoto.com, click on SUPPORT, click on UPDATE MY PHONE SOFTWARE.

#2) Select VERIZON, and MOTO Q, then click UPDATE your Q to the latest ROM / FIRMWARE
*make sure to save all contacts / media, etc since it will we erased...
*moto may tell you that you have the newest firmware, if so skip to step #5

#3)Dial *228 on you phone. Wait. Press 1. Wait till programming is done.

#4)AGAIN dial *228 on you phone. Wait. Press 2. Wait till programming is done.

#5)Download the GPSCOM.EXE file. Unzip it. Hook your Q up to ACTIVESYNC through your USB cable. Click on 'EXPLORE' in ACTIVESYNC. Drag the GPSCOM.EXE file into a directory on your phone where you will remeber.

#6)On your Q go to START > BLUETOOTH > BLUETOOTH MAGAGER > SETTINGS > turn your bluetooth ON > check 'allow other devices to see this phone etc"

#7)Click MENU > SERIAL PORTS > Write down the OUTBOUND COM PORT. My default port was COM 1 > HIT CANCEL

#8)Turn on your BLUETOOTH GPS device. Let it load up.

#9)Get to your start menu on your phone and go START > FILE MANAGER > now its your turn to find where you put the GPSCOM.EXE file :) > Find it, click on it. It will load. Change the COM port to the COM port you saw in the bluetooth settings on your phone (ex, mine was com 1) > select OK > the program will close.

#10)From the bluetooth settings on your phone click MENU AGAIN > Paired Devices > MENU > ADD > Find your GPS device and ADD IT. Enter the device code which should be "0000" without the quotes.

#11)Load GOOGLE MAPS! Go to MENU > OPTIONS > TRACK LOCATION SETTINGS > Make sure "Set by Windows (Via Start-> Settings)" is CHECKED > Exit the settings.

#12)Click MENU > TRACK LOCATION > At this point your bluetooth device will finally find your phone. A message will appear from bluetooth manager just select "yes".

Your phone should now be connected to your GPS receiver correctly! Have fun!

I would also like to give a big F U  to Verizon for making their customers HACK their phones and PDA's to get their BLUETOOTH TO WORK!!! How INSANE IS THIS?! How come I have to post a huge essay on how to connect to your freaking Bluetooth device? How come? Anyway, enjoy and god bless ;)

I have a Globalsat BT-359 GPS and it paried with my Q fine, but the GPS still shows a status of "Not connected to any Bluetooth device." (slow blinking light for BlueTooth).

I was able to move the GPSCOM.EXE file to my Q and run it and I specified COM1 as instructed. I confirmed in Google maps that the com port is COM1 and the baud rate is 38400 ( as instructed in my manual for the GPS). Also, I confirmed that Bluetooth on my Q is using COM1 for the outbound COM port.

I then saw the post from tricky311 and tried those steps (except for the firmware upgrade because my Q is only a few months old) and am still seeing the same results.

Any help would be appreciated.

After many tries and this patch, I finally got the Moto Q to pick up the Holux M-1200 GPS about a month ago. Used a couple of times with google maps and worked great.

Went to use the GPS the other day with Google maps after resetting Google maps a few days earlier and now it won't pick up the GPS receiver again. Tried reinstalling everything (repaired bluetooth GPS, reinstalled Google maps and GPS zip patch)but still won't pick up the GPS signal again.

Under bluetooth settings, serial ports are listed:
Inbound Com Port: BTC5
Outbound Com Port: Com 1
Default Device for outbound: Holux M-1200

Driving myself crazy so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

I have a holux gps slim 240, and It had been working up untill yesterday. Nothing I did would make it work. I tested the gps with a laptop and it works find, it pairs, aquires sats, and reports location with a gps application.

on the phone, I followed all the instructions from this post.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1325997&postcount=52

also did a master reset as well. When it gets to the point of trying to access the gps it says.

"No Bluetooth serial ports could be found for device HOLUX GPSLIM240"

I tried googlemaps, as well as another gps application. Both report the same thing. I know the bluetooth part atleast works as my headset still communicates with no issues. It seems as though it just can not open/use any of the comports or atleast com1:

Anyone have any idea what i can do to fix this.

** SOLVED **

Turned out to be the GPS, however the GPS is not defective. Something sent a command to the unit causing it to have a protocol and baud out of sync issue. This was stored in the ram of the reciever, the fix required that i take the reciever apart and disconnect the battery. Once reconnected and put back together, it started working again.

I have an Oncourse BT-339 Bluetooth GPS unit that I want to use with my Q9h. I tested the gps with my Pocket PC and it works fine , it pairs, aquires sats, and reports location with a gps application. I took the battery out for a minute to reset the GPS device as
Recommended by an earlier post. (Did not help)

I have a Q9h recently updated to Win6.1 latest AT&T ROM.
I followed all the instructions from this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=52 except deleted Steps 3 & 4 since I can’t dial *228 on T-Mobile and get programming updates.

Steps 5 thru 11 seemed to go as expected, including pairing right away between the GPS and the Q9h.
Step 12, Bluetooth GPS never finds my Q9h. No message appears from Bluetooth manager (to select “yes”) I believe phone never connects to the GPS receiver because
The GPS units times out and turns itself off after several minutes.

The other reason is I get message on Google Maps that “Seeking GPS satellites (0)…” which I believe means no GPS is visible. I used the “managed by Windows” option for
Google Maps GPS input.

I’ve turned everything off and rebooted to make several similar attempt with MS LIVE SEARCH. Similar results (No GPS Signal) were observed using both the GPS Intermediate driver Option and the GPS Com1: option.

OBSERVATIONS:
1. My BT GPS device appears to be paired with the Q9h and the GPS
Units address data is displayed.
2. My BT GPS receiver times out and shuts off (paired but not “connected” I think)
3. I can’t turn off Bluetooth on the Q9h unless I recycle power so that I get to
Option 6 on the Bluetooth Menu. (Otherwise it’s stuck on the “Paired Devices” menu within Option 6.

QUESTIONS: 1) Any advise or guidance so that I can make this BT GPS and Q9h play Nicely together.
2) GPSID installed with Program Port com3: and Hardware Port com1: and baud rate 38400 and
manage automatically selected. Does GPSID Conflict with the GPSCOM.exe above ???

Thanks in advance…

Here is a port selection utility I wrote to configure GMM and other WM5 GPS API based applications on the Smartphone platform. Unzip, copy to your phone and run to select comm port for GMM to use.

Tested on HTC S620 but should be ok for DASH and other WM5 smartphones.

Enjoy!

NOTE: Changing the "enabled" state requires a phone restart to take effect including the initial run

It's great tool, it works perfectly on my Moto Q9h with Bluetooth GPS. Thanks very much.

GPSCOM isn't meant for the PC but for the mobile device!
