View Full Version : Loox n5x0 series rom update

14th February 2007, 11:30 AM
heh, i`ve researched on the loox n5x0 series (htc maria?) rom format. now we can create custom roms.
Loox n5x0 OS_xxxU.nbf header format
total 42 bytes header, the rest is not crypted os rom image (what we usually call nb0 or n_d)
4 bytes - model name (N500, N520 or N560) + 11 bytes empty (filled with 0x00) +9 bytes version (e.g. 1.22.0001) + 1 byte 0x20 (space) +3 bytes language (e.g. ENG, ITA, GER) + 2 bytes empty (0x0) +4 bytes - reversed crc32 checksum (if we have, for example, 1163FCED, then we write ED FC 63 11) + 4 bytes - size of decrypted part (reversed somehow? we have 2100000 and write 00001002) + 4 bytes - rom base flash address (seems it it 80400000, we type 00 00 04 80, don`t play with it)
all this is true for OS_yyyU.nbf ( yyy means rom version), bootloader nbf is coded otherwise, it is usually named BL_xxx_G3.nbf or bl_xxx_G4.nbf. xxx - bl version. I suppose you delete file bl_xxx_G4.nbf or bl_xxx_G3.nbf. new pda`s come with g4 flash, it will be killed with g3 update. and, anyhow, bootloader update is always dangerous and not recommended.
wait a bit - in some days i`ll post a tutorial how to extract os rom image from n500/n520 and probably n560 pda.

No WM6 yet, but
http://4pda.ru/forum/attach/805977/n560.Alex_DFR_.AKU.3.5.2.rar - here is the rom with aku 3.5.2 for n560
For Loox C550
http://4pda.ru/forum/attach/808633/PocketLOOXC550FlashTool.7z - here is the flasher for c550, download it, download aku3.5.2 for n560, overwrite the files from the n560 update and open OS_213u.nbf with winhex and change n560 to c550
If you have german/french/italian/spanish pda but want to use this update, edit the nbf with winhex and change ENG to FRA/GER/ITA/SPA
Be sure to remove the password (fsc secure lock) before flashing

I have a spanish N560 pda. I wanted to upgrade its rom.
I did everything as indicated:
- open pda and put it in the cradle
- connect cradle to the power and the usb to my WinXP laptop
- in my XP machine activesync (4.5 spanish version) connects and recognizes my pda
- check there is no password protection in the pda (there was none before)
- unpack n560.Alex_DFR_.AKU.3.5.2.rar and open with WinHex OS_213U.nbf; change ENG to SPA; save file
- execute PocketLOOX5xxFlashTool; in the end I get this error:
"The language in this Flash Image update () differs from that on your device (SPANISH)!"

Well, I did again and again and again... same error...
Any suggestions???
PS: I would like to put its new rom in english, if it's possible!
Thank you

Hi sp3dev,
your update is quite intersting but I have two questions before I want to flash:
1. is the ROM affected by flashing your image, if flashing fails, can the N560 hard reset to original state?
2. Is there a tool which can fetch a complete image from N560 (with ROM)?
Can you give us a short info how you cook the image?
Where do you get the HW depended drivers (e.g WLAN, display..)?
Do you have any links? I have looked a long time
to find any info about upgrade the N560 or cooking Loox images.
Thanks

Hi sp3dev and everyone,
I did the upgrade and it went fine, the only thing was that the keyboard was English, I thought there were all in the ROM, and I wanted to get back to the first ROM, so and here comes my problem, I executed
pdocwrite nk.nb0 0 0x2300000
The result of this is that it get stucked at the very first screen, Is there any way to get back? How could I upload a ROM to the N560 in this case?
Thanx

It's not there due to a bug. Likewise the transcriber does not work and hangs the system.
I suggest waiting until they fix it and upgrade then, if it is vital for you. I will wait for two reasons: it is probably buggy yet (only two known bugs now though), and I am loath to re-install everything from scratch for the next couple of weeks ;)
Besides, people experiment there with pool size (with some trade-off in RAM) which may yield an even faster machine.
Also if you upgrade, you must not use an old (all-)system backup. Just re-install everything single piece of software you use. Note that some software may lose its registration since you will have a *different* PPC with new (and unofficial) ROM.
... and "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" remember? :)

Hi sp3dev,
I thought that in AKU 3.5.2 WPA2 was supported. If I'm right this is supported since AKU 3.5. After upgrade I noticed it wasn't in this release. Is it a mistake? or I'm really wrong.

True, but i can't rembemer not installing any MS beta ;-)
And if someone posts a wm6 rom here, i won't be the first to try but might be second or third :D
Maybe my intention was to notify but wrote my text wrong..

Hi has there been any progress on a WM6 rom for pocket loox?

7th July 2007, 03:10 PM
I understand that I can backup my current ROM with pdocread 0 0x2300000 nk.nb0
But as I understand, this nk.nb0 cannot be flashed back because the header is missing, right?
So I know how the header must be:
Header: 4 first bytes are the model (N520, N500, N560). Then 11 empty bytes. Then 9 bytes are the version number (like 1.22.0001). Then one byte is 0x20. Then 3 bytes language (ENG, GER, ITA). Then 2 empty bytes. Then 4 bytes checksum of the nb0 file but backwards (like checksum is: 1163FCED then we put in ED FC 63 11). Then 4 bytes unencrypted space size but backwards (like typical 2100000 will be 00001002). Then 4 bytes are the starting address of the flashing but backwards (like typical 80400000 will be 00 00 04 80)
But where do I get these information:
- What version number do I need? (like 1.22.0001)
- How do I get the checksum? Is this the checksum before modifieing the header?
- What's "unencrypted space size" and how do I get that info?
- "starting address of the flashing" is ALWAYS 80400000?
Thanks for any info.

One more question:
I have a German Loox n560. As I understand I can flash the inofficial upgrade if I change "ENG" toi "GER" with a hex editor. But then I will have an English language ROM on my Loox? Or are these international ROMs?
orbb39
9th July 2007, 09:04 PM
After you flash the new rom changing the ENG to GER, the new software will be in english. Also the keyboard will be english.
I did it for me from spanish (ESN) and right now is in english..but certainly works better than the previous..It looks more responsive to me :)
Good luck

Hello!
I have the same questions as owislky..:
- how to get the checksum of the rom, the space size information and the starting adress?
I have made a dump of my german rom before putting the eng. unofficial upgrade on my loox. but without a working header I can't reflash it back...
thanks anyone who know more!

Hello!
- I got the right checksum calculated now and everything seemed to be fine but my loox is dead now. I don't know why.
I have dumped my german original rom and added te correct header.
The flash tool copied the image file witout warning and the rom was extracted on the loox.
The loox bootloader shows 2 progress bars.
the first one was fully loaded (blue),the second was about 1/10 blue, when it jumped to full blue with one step.
After that, the loox display had turned off, the flash software's progress bar still moved a bit, when an error message appeared: connection to loox lost...
that's it.
anyone know why this could occur??
thanks,
Christian

First of all I don't think "pdocread 0 0x2300000 nk.nb0" will give you a right backup on French rom. That's for backup original Eng rom.
Please try:
1, use "pdocread -t" to find out your rom size. After command executed, a message will indicate "real nr of sectors"
2, using that number(should be the biggest one) to replace # in "pdocread 0 0x###### nk.nb0"
Then upload the file again for someone to verify.
Good luck

No, you should read more on these pages and perhaps on 4pda. you might want to check the n520 thread because language setting is not chosen but needs to be hex edited in the rom file.. try the search.

leffetripel,
usually i use babelfish but google indeed also does the trick.. But this way of translation does not always cover it..
Currently, i run into missing the setting to handle the mic! it is replaced with a applet that allows me to direct the souns to a specified port, which seems a very nice feature.
no other problems yet.

Tried downloading the newplow ROM but the download times out. Besides the 4pda forum, is there another site where the ROM can be obtained. Tried google but 4pda is the only place its listed at this time. Which windows ce rom is this based on...WM 6.0 or 6.1?

Running the Pups 0.0.4 release of WM6 is just a charm on the N560 :)
First I've tried to use the newplow image, but there was no chance to get the GPS working! Now with the Pups image no problem running GPS. Language change with RealVGA to german works also fine :)

1. storage:55.93free and program 29.86 free
2. both are fine but not great. missing some bleutooth features that the axim driver had in wm5.
But it is fast, and that is a big plus. I think that if we give it some more time this rom wil evolve to a great one..

Maybe,
i had some issues with igo myway 2006, when closing the port was left open.
After re-opening the nav app it was unable to open the GPS port.
But i never tested another gps app, so i thought this was an isolated event/error.

Well, answer to my own questions:
1, SDHC NOT SUPPORT YET.
2, N/A
plus,
N560_WM6.016's core is older(5.2.1437 Build 17944.0.3.8) than N560.C550.WM6.Pups.777_Team.0.0.4(5.2.1908 b18508.0.7.0)
so far The only big advantage is .net framework update to 3.5.7283
I suggest N560 users wait until next possibly release with kernel 5.2.1933 (build 17944.0.7.0)

And thanks, I've already flash newplow's "N560_WM6.016" onto my N560 (a risk loving manic ). the result for SDHC is as above mentioned: NOT SUPPORT SDHC.

One more comments:
newplow's "N560_WM6.016" version doesn't give a good performance in A2DP.
Hissing sound in all music background that used to fine when played in PC.
As a music lover, I used to use n560 as a wireless walkman (with help of a bluetooth stereo headset).
The build-in bt stack comes with the original WM5 image is rubbish! Many hissing sound (especial in high frequency human voice). The tweaks to registry (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=970796#post970796) helps a little bit but the WM6 image from Russian genius: N560.C550.WM6.Pups.777_Team.0.0.4 has a great improvement in the A2DP feature. After flash to it nothing need to be done you just have your wireless music very crystal and hard to tell if it's from a wired headset.
So be alert, if you're using wireless bt headset like me and have a sharp ear:)

Hi folks,
OK so we've got WM6 awesome!
But there are a certain things i would like to be sure about. I guess i am not the only person. Some ppl already asked some good question but no answers at all..
Has anyone started something like Howto ?
I personally love my n560 and i don't want to brick it cause of some stupid mistakes.
Here are some things which i think are vital to know before starting..
1. Howto create a Working Backup of your WM5 Orginal rom and what Software you need for this? (For different languages)
2.Which ROM should be used (Your experience) Where to download them what tools you need for flashing? Any other important informations?
So .. I'd like to have this questions sorted before i try flashing my pda.
Thx already

First of all, the sound quality is depends on your bluetooth headset too: How good it works when translate received signal into music. Let's assume DR-BT10CX is a nice one(try google for other user's opinion on its performance).
Second, here's my steps on enable N560 as a wonderful wireless music player:
1, pair your headset as usual. I'm using a Plantronics590, which supports stereo music playback as well as micro-phone.
2, The trick is only check "wireless stereo","headset" must unchecked(you may not have this option). This will make sure the system only use it for music play play not a mono hands-free etc.
3, then you could still try hold your stylus on your BT headset name inside the "Device" page. after the pop-up menu appear click on "Set as Wireless Stereo" item.
4, you all set! a headset icon: with a music note in between two little speaks should show up on the top of you screen.:)
Good Luck!

Hi all,
It seems that after flashing the N560.WM6.032g ROM update the 15-digit device ID is changed. Therefore, registered software (NAVIGON) fails to run.
I assume that the ID is encrypted in the bin file.
Does somebody knows the offset address of the ID for the WM5 and WM6 bin files - or is there another way to solve this?

Hi,
Forgot to tell that the 15-digit number is generated by NAVIGON during registration on the PDA. I cannot find it without running the MobileNavigator6 software. This number plus the software's serial number is to be sent to NAVIGON, and they send you back an activation number.
I had my MN6 software registered under WM5, but after the WM6 update, the device number is changed...

I have finally gone for NewPlows ROM with Quick GPS etc built in. I have successfuly added Broadcom and SDHC drivers.
What has irritated me more than anything is that the Freeware TCPMP will not play wma files, saying the codec is not supported. I had spent a lot of time converting to my CDs to "wma" as the quality of recordings is better than mp3 for the same bit rate....
TCPMP for wma files worked fine under WM5. Has anyone else worked out how to make it work, please? I have tried installing it in both main memory and SDHC but both give the same pop up error window regarding the codec.
Am I missing something?

Since installing WM6.1 I have my suspicions that there is a greater current drain on the battery. It just seems to run down that bit quicker. It could be my battery has been thrashed and is losing its capacity, but I am still curious.
I am about to run some tests using acbPowerMeter. I wonder if the Processor settings have something to do with it. Unless I am mistaken, I remember only three options under WM5 but there seem now to be four i.e. Turbo Mode, Standard Mode, Power Saving Mode and Automatic Mode. It is not exactly clear what are the benefits and performance of each option!
I plan to assess the performance and especially effects on power consumption. Each setting probably does something to the frequency of the clock running the processor and how that is controlled under load and I wonder if there is any documentation to describe this?
Does anyone else believe they are getting through battery juice more quickly after the move from WM5 to WM6.1?

For any of you interested, I have investigated why TCPMP does not find the WMA and WMV codecs. It is because they have been re-named in WM6, since TCPMP is now a bit old it doesn't find them. To make it work under WM6 you need to copy the two "old" WM5 codecs into the WM6 Windows folder on your device. The files are called wmadecoder.dll and wmvdecoder.dll. This makes TCPMP work properly under WM6. You can find them at

You can do it this way or you can pick up the original ROM images from 4PDA site here http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=50546 but you will need a Google translation. Beware though, I found that some of the "original" ROM images had been edited in minor ways, indeed one I tried stopped Outlook synchronisation with ActiveSync and persisted in connecting as a Guest! Your solution of making your own device's image would not suffer from this!
If you rummage around you can even find instructions for re-constructing your own devices image as an .nbf file.

Hey, how did you "find" it? Has it ever worked since you found it?
If stuck on the climbers screen then you may well have a bricked device. Have you tried taking the battery out and then back in? It might restart.
If this doesn't work then try a hard reset? Press Power, Claendar button and stylus in the rest hole in the bottom all simultaneously, then remove the stylus whilst still holding the other two buttons and wait until the screen display disappears. When it returns, the climbers picture should appear and the device starts from scratch with screen alignment etc. But if it then asks for a password, you have probably got a "missing" device! Unless you have the password that unlocks the machine, its back to FS for an expensive unlock....

1. Near the start are the three characters referring to the language, e.g. ENG. They belong to the header which is 42 bytes long. The language given here has to be identical to the current language in the ROM otherwise flashing the ROM with the new OS will fail. Correct? In my case I have to change the language from ENG to GER.
2. However, after the 42 bytes of the header the image of the OS starts. Not too far away from here, you find again three characters referring to the language. Do I have to change the language there as well? Maybe that is the location to determine the OS language. Have you guys changed those characters as well?

If it is charging the red LED (top right should be flashing). If it is solid then the battery is fully charged. If it is the first time you have used it or the battery then be aware it can take 8 hours or more to complete the first charge.
2.I try to flash it and still the same No loox 5xx device.........
You must remove all passwords in WM5 before you flash. There are potentially two, one - the simple FSC one, and two - the hardware lock (to prevent theft). As I have flashed my to WM6.1 I cannot remember where you go to change that. The second one is buried in a progam or settings sub menue/tab.
If this doesn't work then, as one of the upgrade sites suggests, you might need to install FSC Reg.cab before performing the flash. I did not, but you can find it in FSC utilities download on the upgrade sites. It is one of several FSC small utilities in the zip file.
Hope this helps?

I have noticed that Transcriber seems to have been removed from WM6.1 and perhaps WM6 too? Or has it been taken out by our Russian friends when creating the new ROMs for the N560? I personally do not mourn its loss.
There seems to be slight differences between the Note app, which still has an option of Drawing, but you cannot now use Transcriber to translate into text. It can still record voice notes crudely.
And Mobile Notes seems an odd stilted application even less useful than Notes? What is going on? Is it Microsoft or our Russian friends again?

You should get a fix within 30 secs, sometimes less, if Quick GPS is working properly. And you need to stay still and preferably outside for first fix. And you should make sure that your N560 has been on the cradle connected to a PC with internet access. I discovered a gotcha. I had installed a new firewall and there was no indication but it blocked the N560's direct access to the Ephemeris data web-site that Quick GPS uses. I too had long waits. Check that if you run Quick GPS on the cradle that it has 2 days and 23 hours of data on the satellites. You can run the data download immediately from that screen, and this should give you 2 days and 23 hours worth of satellite positional data. Then retry, preferably outside, the first fix.
The baud rate can be changed to 57600 as the rate at which the N560 analyses and samples the satellite data stream will be a bit faster. Check also that the software you are using is seeing the right GPS Port (check under Settings/System/External GPS, "External GPS" is a strange term as it covers internal settings!). Here you can set the ports to match your software. However, I would recommend doing it the other way. Just leave the settings on the N560 alone and change the software settings to match the N560.
Hope this helps?

I have been running tests on power consumption since changing my ROM image to WM6.1 from NewPlow, version 018. I discovered something very odd and potentially useful. If some of you can run the same tests, we can see if the results are repeatable on all devices. I disovered that running TCPMP, the freeware music/video player (you only need press play and then pause it for less than a second) the quiescent current taken by the N560 from the battery drops from 98mA to 56mA. This is a drop in consumptin of about 43%. The consumption after a warm start on my device is 98mA. After running TCPMP, playing a short burst, then the quiescent or resting current consumption is 56mA. How odd?
To repeat the tests you will ned to set the screen brightness to the lowest setting. And the Processor power setting should be set to Automatic Mode. You need to install acbPowerMeter and TCPMP version 0.72. Then run acbPowerMeter. There will be peaks whenever you exit or enter programs or change something, but watch for the current taken when it settles down. Then try just loading TCPMP and not running it. The quiescent current should be around 98mA plus or minus a few milliamps. Then try playing a short burst of music and then pausing it. The new quiescent current should now be 40% or thereabouts less.
I also use the freeware utility tMan to switch quickly between acbPowerMeter and other programs. It is easy to run power tests this way.
If this is true you can reduce the power taken by the N560. These results may well apply to other models in the FSC range, but also other Pocket PCs using the same WM version. It might even apply to WM5?
Any ideas why this happens folks?

Is this quickgps software actually any use?
(some forums claim the info which is downloaded is old info)
The new quiescent current should now be 40% or therabouts less.is this 40% less than (1) before starting TCPMP OR (2) before pressing play with TCPMP already running?

Answer to first point - I agree TomTom seems to only like connecting to the hardware port direct which is COM 4. I have found that setting to 57600 actually helps to speed up the data comms.
Quick GPS had problems at first with outdated satellite ephemeris data but I can confirm that the problems were sorted and the satellite data works well now. The first fix is considerably faster. maybe even less than 15 seconds. As NewPlow has put the FSC program "GPS Locator" in main ROM now, I find this an advantage as you will always get a first fix faster if you load GPS Locator first, then get the first fix (enhanced by Quick GPS), exit it, then load your choice of GPS software e.g. TT6 or Memory Map whatever.... This is much faster than using the latter apps on their own.
If I understand your question correctly, the answer is both 1 and 2! The key is to press Play even briefly and the quiescent power consumption is less than before you pressed it, obviously TCPMP has to be running, but 40% less than before it was running too. Isn't it odd? But useful...
How did you get on, did you achieve the reduction too?

6th June 2008, 10:03 PM
Wow 40% is quite amazing. I have not tried it yet, still tidying it all up after upgrading to WM6.1, you know all those quirky things like button assignments that makes it work perfectly for YOUR usage! I'm extremely impressed with this combination of holding the panning button and using left and right to change screen brightness... fantastic! and autoscreen dimming is cool too. Battery consumption was a gripe with me before but i guess it will be much better with these new features.
What about a (mono) bluetooth connection? I can add my device, and even select it in the audio options, but cannot hear anything through it? Is there an install to make it play music etc over bluetooth. I think I could in WM5 but forget what I installed.
My GPS Locator does not work at all after the update, and I took this newest one from NewPlow... although TomTom finds a fix pretty fast now, in about one minute. I am still sceptical as to whether I have the gps side of things configured correctly to make best use of this QuickGPS,
As you say TomTom prefers 4, does yours also prefer 9600? It seems to work ok for me like that. Although 'external gps settings' say that it's transmitting on com8 for software with 57000. Do you think TomTom is benefitting from the QuickGPS data in this case?
Anyone know of any handy utility for doodling, you know like painting or something..?
And has anyone heard of a sim card reader that you can put in the SD slot. That would be awesome, it would make it into a phone! but that's just dreaming eh?!

Under WM6.1 (and maybe WM5?) if you press and hold the Action button (middle of the 4 way joypad) and the Today button briefly (bottom right hand corner button) it will take you straight to the screen alignment utility.
But not as useful as the screen brightness button trick! Or the TCPMP one either... still don't know how I found that one!
fingerstoo
7th June 2008, 09:39 AM
Bit more on the power consumption reduction!
After much translation on Akshal's and the 4PDA sites, I have come to the conclusion that the "bug" or "feature" that was in WM5, where the quiescent current consumption was high until a sound was played, is also unfortunately carried over to WM6.1. The same piece of program code is still in there.
The use of TCPMP briefly in "play" mode obviously has the desired effect. Indeed playing any sound, however briefly, kicks the consumption down by 43%. The alternative way to do this is to go to Settings/Sounds and Notifications (assuming like me you have turned off Screen taps and Hardware buttn sounds!) and just tick Hardware buttons, Soft. This will have the effect that as soon as you touch a button after a warm start the power consumption will drop by 43%.
So the 3 solutions to reducing the battery power consumption are:
1. install GoodwavPower (which runs each time you start up)
2. run something that plays a wav sound (TCPMP or WMP)
3. set Screen taps or Harware buttons to sound softly or loudly!
I think this re-emergence of the wav power drawing may be why some of us have reported a suspicion that there is higher battery consumption after going to WM6.1. The answers seem to be here?

I am sitting here with non working Messaging on his WM6.1 and I am a bit reluctant to take oNNoZeLe's suggestion to downgrade in case Newplow releases a new version of WM6.1. It is a lot of work to re-install all my software and settings, so I don't want to burn a new version without good reason!

I suppose I will have to be patient, but it is like waiting for a bus... no idea when Newplow will release, if at all, a new version of WM6.1 with the bug removed.

Anyone tried the latest (10.6.08) N560 WM6.0 release 035 yet?
I assume it has solved some bugs of which I was not aware?

fingerstoo,
i installed the latest yesterday.. and i can read my mail again :D.
I don't use alot of tools so "flashing my thing" is a hour work to be back up-and-running.
If newplow creates a new wm6.1 rom i will try it again. And if this works i will stay on the wm6.1. Ifnot, i'll wait or install the 035.
This is one reason why i stopped customizing. ;)
goodluck with your choice.

Hey Folks,
has anybody heard anything if WPA2 may be available in any upcoming patch/rom-version.
With this, the N560 would be perfect. This is the last thing that would be left.
Best Regards!

Thanks for your helpful reply.
The other feature that use constantly is GPS. Do you know if that, in particular, is working normally?
I am tempted to just sit and wait (bus thing again!) until Newplow does update WM6.1. It's less hassle. I take your point about customising, but I have stuff from 3 generations of WM back that is still useful, e.g. IrDa universal remote control, birding programs etc..... I am well and truly committed.

Hello everyone, I read on newplows guestbook that he is not going to release new 6.1 updates. He did not tell the reason why.
But I have a question if you mind. I installed the new 035 version, and in the earlier versions I had a clicking sound when I pushed for example the start button, but I cant set it in this version? Any ideas? Some registery hack?
Iam missin this sound somehow....
Thank you

I finally gave in and got rid of Newplow's WM6.1 because of the Messaging bug and the Encryption issue.... I installed his WM6.0 release 035. It seems to release more memory and is faster and does not appear to have any significant "bugs". I suffered a few inexplicable crashes of the PC while sending the new files to the PPC via USB/ActiveSync, but this happened last time! Luckily a hard N560 reset enabled another go at it. After 5 attempts it ran through without crashing the PC. I wonder if this happened to anyone else. I am running XP and I did all the right things, direct cable to USN not a hub, shut off all firewalls and internet access etc. It failed at different points of transferring the burn program and ROM image. When it finally got past this the burn was very quick indeed. Phew! The burn program seems to have caused a kernel fault. No blue screen, just dropped out and Windows restarted! Odd but at last I got through it.
I can see now why Newplow does not seem committed to WM6.1 as his WM6.0 release 035 is very stable and everthing seems to work, AND the version of Mobile Office apps seems to be 6.1 (which is one of the reasons I went to WM6.1 to get latest Office format compatibility).
At last Messaging works and I can rest easy!

I've just successfully flashed my Loox N560 with N560.WM6.0.035.01.7z from newplow. It runs OK but I seem to have lost the original OS version's USB host functionality. If I plug my portable USB keyboard into the Loox via the host USB cable nothing happens. Same for USB SD card readers which used to appear in File Explorer and Total Commander as "Hard Drive".
Is there a Fujitsu-Siemens specific driver somewhere I have to load to get this functionality in WM6.0 or WM6.1?

Weird. I have Newplow Wm6.0 035 on my C550 and I can read write to my 4gb memory stick on USB host cable. You might need some HID drivers for keyboard. I can't test that as I don't have a USB keyboard.
I have a ratoc driver that *may* work. Think I got it here:-

*EDIT* I just tried my multi card reader. It seemed to lock up the host, so that I had to soft reset to get other things to work again.

Firstly, are you really sure it's worth upgrading to 6.1? I did and have reverted to 6.0. Newplow's 6.1 has some problems but 6.0 version 035 appears OK (to me).
I assume that you have copied the 6.1 ROM image file (OS_213U.nbf) into the same folder as the Loox flash tool? Also have you ensured the files associated with the burn program are there too i.e. EnterBootLoader.exe, RUU.dll and RUUServer.dll? And have you removed any password locks etc (FSC or the MS one)? Good idea also to temorarily stop any Firewall on the PC...

You say no connection. Do you mean that ActiveSync does not register the reset device as connected, even as a Guest? A Guest connection is fine. This should be established before running the Loox burning program.
One other thing to check is whether your USB connection is to a USB port directly on the motherboard of your PC? It should NOT be via a USB hub or multi USB port device. I think the problem sounds more software related than hardware, but it is worth checking.
The "password lock" is a password that survives a Hard Reset! If set, it prevents a thief from using the device unless they know the password. You might have set it inadvertantly? As I don't have WM5 any longer, I cannot remember where it is. It is called the FSC Lock or Secure Lock methinks. You simply have to remove the password i.e. no password set. Most of the translated instructions for a Loox ROM burn are very specific about removing the simple password but also this more secure survivable password. You would not normally be asked for this password unless you do a hard reset. But if set I believe it will prevent the burn...
Perhaps someone else can tell us what it is called?

What e-mail problems?
I have noticed with the 6.1 ROM I couldn'use Googlemaps anymore. I kept on saying it needed a wireless connection, which was on.
So i'll better go back to the latest WM6.0 32,35 or 36 ?
Ok I am back to WM6.0 (36)
Still Googlemaps gives me a problem

The WM6.1 email "bugs" are admitted by Newplow on his website. You can set up an account, retrieve settings successfully from the internet. Log on to your email site, pick up emails BUT you cannot open them! Also you cannot create new ones either. He doesn't seem keen to sort them out either, but he is persisting with WM6.0 development (latest release is 036 with solution for iGo users - not me). I am on Newplow's WM6.0 release 035... not sure if release 036 is worth the move as I don't use iGo?
I use Opera 8.65 and Google maps works on it although unreadble map in bottom right hand corner! But the GoogleMaps app gets stuck needing a wireless connection, just like you.

Right. I dont have the Googlemaps problem with my Toshiba G900. I can't remember if I had the problem before on older releases of the ROM for the N560.

I am running Newplow's WM6.0 035 with the SDHC card driver, goodwavpower and tMan loaded to the device. I have installed Navigon 6.1 and POI Warner 2 to run from a 8Gig SDHC card with the intention of preserving maximum memory on the N560. My experience is the opposite, Navigon runs as far as selecting a location but as soon as it starts to calculate the route, a screen pops up asking me to close either Navigon or POI Warner followed by a request to close the other.
Using tMan to open system/memory just before the calculation starts, it shows Storage as 75.94 free (from 81.12) and Program as 8.68 free (from 50.17).
WM2003SE automatically reallocated memory, should this not happen on WM6.0?
Anyone know how to redistribute some of the storage memory to give more program space please?
UPDATE I get the same problems if the GPS software is installed to the device. It seems to be related to running Navigon via the 8Gig card. The problem goes away if a 2Gig card is used. It seems that Navigon has problems with cards larger than 2 Gig. It was not happy with 4Gig SD (non HC) cards before the HC driver came along. Other files are OK with larger cards. Are these problems widespread or peculiar to my set-up?

I am currently using Pups.0.0.4 rom and very satisfied with its reliability and performance. But the author of the rom stopped updating it after the version. On the contrary, Newplow is continuously updating his rom. I have an impression from many people that his rom is getting better and better even compared with Pups.0.0.4.
Can anybody definitely say which is better? Once I decide to use something I don't change unless it is unusable for a crucial fault or there is clearly better one available. Thanks in advance.

The error you get is about the connection to the device. So there is something wrong with ActtiveSync(PC) <> N560

I think I know what you need, if you are still "out there"?
You need to find the program FSC Reg.cab which is on some of the Russian sites in a collection of FSC Utilities. When you download them, they come in a folder called "OEM". EDIT: Found it... it's here by MadPriest
http://66.102.9.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php%3Fs%3D1b95147e243f984e6be890518d1587a0%2 6showtopic%3D74762%26st%3D780&prev=/search%3Fq%3D4pda%2Bteam%2B777%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
For some reason I cannot seem to access the sites to find it for you. But you should install this little proggie on the N560. It will not appear to do anything, but it will release the ROM burn with the Loox Flashtool. I suggested it to someone else who had the same problem and it worked. These sites suggest that you run it as part of the burn - I didn't run it and the Flash worked anyway. But others report that they do and it stops the error message and the Flash runs.

I decided to see if I could find the missing Transcriber app (mising from Newplow's 035 and proably other WM6 releases). Newplow suggested getting it from MS, but I tried it. It is an old version for WM2002 and it assumes (understandably) that the screen is only QVGA not VGA. Consequently when you write with a stylus the inked version is very large and appears down and to the right of where you are writing. No good!
Perusing Dell WM5/6 upgrades on this site I found two newer versions but they had the same minor problems on the N560 (like no ink when writing but highlighting some text already in a document put there using the keyboard!).
But there is one version which does work on the FSC N560, if you can find it. I managed to download it, but cannot get back to the site (the 4pda.ru site seems to be unavailable even though I accessed it earlier today). It seems to work well and the file is called A17Transcriber.cab and is delivered as A17Transcriber.rar. If I could get the link for you all, I would! Oh, and if you do install it, you will find it does not work properly until you perform a soft reset. And the "options" to fine tune it can only be accessed when you have chosen to use Transcriber as the input method on running Mobile Word ,say.
I just missed Transcriber a bit - even though I hardly ever used it. But it works just fine.

As you will flash the ROM it doesn't matter what your current Rom content is - provided the language matches.
Flushed yesterday Newplow 038.
Works great, feels good, is fast. Still loading Progs, so far so good. Thanks to the developer
Found only two things so far:
The backlight control function is not a program that can be accessed through the buttons? (But I may have missed something here)
The SDHC driver implemented in the "Newp 038" has the same shortcoming as when applied to the original WM5:
Switching to suspend seems to release the SDHC Card. Programs accessing the SDHC Card while running will freeze after switching on from suspend. This is not the case with (standard) SD Cards. (Typical with navigation SW)

its neccesary to have gps instant fix installed on the wm5 OS?

This is not simple. The QuickGPS patch should be applied before you flash to Newplow, because it does TWO things...
1.... it updates the GPS firmware/chip (not the main system ROM) to change the speed of the ports, swop the hardware and software COM ports over (COM4 and COM8) and ensure that the GPS accesses the new file with ephemeris data that downloads from the internet
2.... installs the program QuickGPS which is the program that runs on startup (if you wish) or under your own controla to go to an internet site that sends a small file conataining the ephemeris data to you N560 over theinternet connection.
Newplows ROM only has incorporated the item 2 above, the QuickGPS program. So you still should apply the patch BEFORE flashing the WM5 ROM with WM6.0. Use the 038 version on his Guest page. Do not use the WM6.1 as he is not planning to sort out the 2 bugs which for me make it useless (I did try it). The WM6.0 is fine but I think it has a small memory leak problem. I have posted a couple of comments on Newplow's site as I have been monitoring it today. It is still worth flashing the ROM! The memory leakage is minor but without further investigation I cannot rule out something else running which is causing it. But from my experience it looks like the operating system or more likely MS ActiveSync!
Hope this helps?
Oh and IslandXP, I think the same problem on switching/standby applies to ordinary SD cards too. I have had identical experience, it is NOT just SDHC drivers/cards. I have had lockups on TT6 and Memory Map if you switch off or use suspend/standby on both N560 and other PDAs with only SD cards. Having investigated TomTom behaviour (it applied to TT3, TT5 and now TT6)it writes to the SD quite regularly and it you switch on/off or use standby/suspend while it is running, it leaves the application and writing to SD in a strange state and often locks the device. So both the SD and SDHC suffer the same problem. Therefore I just never switch off or go into any standby mode when running GPS proggies. I do switch off the screen to save battery, but not in the car where it is on supply anyway.
