Well a brave member on hofo has taken apart his 8525 and found something interesting. it look like the connector and tray for the vga video confrencing cam is all there. anyone want to take his 8525 apart, find the vga cam for front, and enable the video cam via the cab and see if this really works. link is here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1113356

pics on thread. maybe we can now be like our tytn brothers and have video confrencing too!

Very interesting, and I noticed this too while I was taking chipset pics for the GPS project. I didn't mention it here because I had no idea how in the world we could get those parts. I think your only hope would be to buy a bricked TyTN that had the front cam.

i cant find anything on ebay or cnn.cn but maybe someone knows where to get this or it will show up somewhere soon and we can try this out. we need more people to come in here and see if anyone has one of these available so we can try this. maybe a member with a 8525 has a bricked tytn also and is willing to take it apart and get the cam so we can see if this is possible. lets not give up bc it would be a great addition.

Cingular Does not support video calling and these phones are not compatible with Tmo USA 3g Network. so this is a waste of time.

Technically speaking if there was a 3rd party app that used the 3g connection to stream a vid via direct connect to another phone vid calling should be possible. But yea cingulars version of Vid callign coming soon is really a bootled version of what the network is capable of doing. Currently Vid calling test phase was sucessfull with cingular from sandiego to newyork. SO the network obviously supports it . And also there is a feature via opus/care that allows the new vid calling feature up aswell. So we must all wait and see. I would like to see when 2 tytns are trying to make a vid call with cingular sims. I wonder what would be the end result.

i have a tytn on cingular and would be willing to give it shot with another tytn owner.... we would have to get VCS enabled on the account though...

Yea thats a plus for u because i have a 85 which no frnt camera. It shld work theoritically.I mean i just dont know the limitations of how it works with the cooked os. I mean, if not im surprised there isnt a 3rd party app that would stream the existing camera through a app. The connection shouldnt matter through a 3rd party app because it can use the data portion as a program streams files over the net. A video call directly from the network would def require the feature to be added . Currently they blocked acesses to employeess to add these features on a company account but it is enabled to be chosen for a customers account. They already preloaded it into the system. I guess its all trial and error. There launching a LG first with the more primitve vid sharing which is suppose to be the hot thing for summer . But unfortunelty this doesnt mean 30 fps live session. Its limited into increments. I have no idea why they did this. It certinly makes us look retarted compared to what the network is capable of doing. I guess we just all have to expirement and see.

well i actually have a TyTn and an 8525 :D but would be willing to throw it on my account anyway(if its not to expensive, maybe a PPU) just in case i encounter anyone to try it with, would be interesting to see if it would even interact with the LG... also i need to note that the tytn does use a different dpadmenu.dll in order for video calling... and it also uses a different dpadmenu.dll for PTT... so far i have failed at trying to make them coexist.. but working on it :D

I've used video calling on an 8525 with one of the WM6 ROM's on Vodafone's network in NZ. Unfortunately with no front camera you can see the other party but they can't see you. I haven't found a way of switching the video calling software to use the 8525's back camera so at least the other party can see stuff from there.

I've got a HERM100 and to be perfectly honest, video conferencing is shite; do you *really* want to see the face of the shitbag you're talking to?

ok seriously however... if you did plug a camera into the board, it could thoretically work if you then added on support within the ROM... no idea if the call would be permitted by Cingular... best tested overseas

i wouldnt mind the video calling.. great for live interactive pr0n :D but would be bad if i had to look at your face  ... the cingular roms do support the front cam... but it requires a different dpadmenu.dll and dialer.... and i dont suggest anyone hack up their 8525 until 2 people with TyTn's can test it on cingular network..

I traded my Cingular 8525 in for the Softbank version (and love the new phone) - but do not know how to use the Front Facing cam (or at least what apps can use it). Is there something I need to do to utilize it in apps (Messenger, Skype, etc).

Also, Does Cingular disable the Internet Calling?

I am game for trying the cam test on Cingular.

I have done the complete housing with a full tutorial and pics inculded in the link below. The front camera I installed came from a TYTN.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1152710&page=1&pp=15

Now I have used the trial version of coolcamera from ateksoftDOTcom which does enable the fron camera. Theres still some glitches that the developer has to work out. The quality on the camera is quite nice actually. I'm not too concerned about video calling but would rather have the capability of using it to record simple video or taken snap shot pics. Some1 mention flashing the rom to enable this feature which is exactly what I was looking to do. So lets get together and make this happen ya'll.

This project seems like a longshot but really interests me. Obstacles:
-I would need a front camera
-I'm on an unlocked Cingular 8525 in the US on T-Mobile
-They don't support video calling
-EDGE is fastest they support, no 3G or UMTS
-I may need a new case to fit this camera

Maybe I could just dremmel (or drill?) a little hole so the camera could see out. But what is this camera piece? There must be an easier way to aquire this then getting an entire spare phone to take it out of.

yes, I have tried it with both VCS PPU and VCS 25 features, you need to understand that VCS is not based on 3g video calling at all, it uses real media in fact. it is 100% software based. if u have ever seen it in action you would know that first u must place the call connect then VCS becomes available after a few moments. the idea is that u will use it to show ur friend a concert or a dress you see at a shop or your naked girlfriend (Ithink this will get the most use). in fact I think VCS is usless and it makes no sense.
I do not have a consumer line I have COU (cingular official use) and it is used for testing and demonstration purposes (at least when I worked at ATT it was). VCS did infact work when I used the cu500v.
Cingular made a big mistake they will regret and probably correct with VCS.
my understanding is that T-Mobile will not make the same mistake and since my wife is still with them I cant wait for their 3g.
I think that americans will use video calling for than our european and asian friends there is just something about it that seems so cool. we are after all cellularly challenged over here.

i havent actually seen it in action, but i had a feeling it was going to be crippled, the name itself gave that away.. Video SHARE is certainly different from video CALLING... oh well, chalk another lame idea up to cing...

sorry Guys I hate to Bring up an Old Project that Got shot down and or jus didn't work but a lil News And Some Questions.

#1) Heres Where you can Buy the Front Cam for Anyone Needing Another one or anyone you has a 8525.

#2) I have a 8525, I bought the new Housing for the Hell of it Cause the old one was Scratched up. Just Cause the Front Camera was so Cheap on ebay I just bought it TO fill the Empty Hole I would have. I've read on the Forums that The connectors Are Still there to Actually Hook The Camera up. Is this Tru ? Can I Simply install the Camera in the empty SLot and hook Up the Connector thats already there And the front camera would Actually Work ?

Just Curious ?:D

#3) Here's The place I'd be Actually Hooking the Camera Up to

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1369/6712801/12919514/232358851.jpg

It's dead easy to put on, just push onto the connector. There is no way that I have come across to use it without the coolcamera software. With that, yes pics, video etc available. (Not a free app by the way but it does have a trial)

It may at some future date, be possible to adapt the Kaiser camera software for the Hermes, that does allow both cameras to be used interchangably. In fact the Kaiser front cam is used as the standard way to take self portrait photos. However it is a different camera altogether, at the back at least, so that might be a sometime / never hope.

people are saying the USA AT&T does not allow video calling ... here is a copy & paste from AT&T/AVAILABLE FEATURES/Video Share Calling.

Video Share allows users to send a 1 way live or recorded video stream from their phone during a phone call to others with compatible phones on the 3G network.

Video Share Plus is priced at $9.99 and includes 60 minutes of usage, additional minutes are $0.25. Sending party pays.

Video Share capable phone and feature required. Both the sender and receiver must be on the 3G network to use Video Share service.

Ok Somewhere in my Post you Misunderstood me. I know that Cingular Doesn't Support Video Conferencing... even if they did , I could Care less. My Phone TyTn is on Tmobile Network.

I"m Saying when I Use my Front Camera to Take a Video or a Pic, The Image on the Screen Is not Right Side up. IT's to the Left....Does Every ones Frontal Camera do this when trying to Take a Pic or Video/Video Conferencing ?

I bought my new from HTC (hermes I) two weeks ago and a sheet a paper in the box said it disabled. Do you (anyone) know how to bring it back? :o
