View Full Version : WM6 vanilla ROM for HERMES
romcooker
27th February 2007, 03:26 AM
We are proud to release the first vanilla WM6 ROM for Hermes, including the following features:
* Windows Update removed
* Extended ROM functionallity removed
* Extended ROM mounted by default
* Application Security disabled
* Other minor registry tweaks
ROM Version: 3.22.110.1
OS Build: 5.2.968 (Build 17217.0.0.0)-xdadev
Free Program memory: 28.68 Mb
Free Storage memory: 41.89 Mb
NBH file includes only splash screen and OS, no ExtROM or Radio will be flashed.
It has been cooked using halok_hk's aChief and uses Olipro's Modified RUU Updater with Des's SSPL for easy flashing: just connect your hermes through activesync and start the ROM upgrade!
This ROM has nothing to do with xda-developers, it has been cooked by the community for the community and is hosted outside xda-developers. Please mirror the rom as much as you can and feel free use it as base rom for future cookings!
We don't take any responsibility for any damage caused by this rom, it has been tested before publishing and it works ok.

is this for real? Just wondering how this can be released when Kyphur is trying so hard to remove everything that leads back to his sources and so forth.
*Also* What does vanilla stand for?

Not having any ROM tools, I can't quite see what's going on inside that beast, but I can see it has the string "HERM200" in it. What tools should I get to peek inside?

It is possible that it is that fast considering a flash of the os.nb via mtty comes to roughly around 5 minutes or so. This is due in part to the fact that the ExtROM, Radio, and other nbs are not flashed.

1. Remote Desktop Client (at least from what I can find -> I perused the Windows directory and couldn't find it).

3. No Live integration at all. The Live client was supposed to be incorporated into the core OS...

4 Total minutes to Flash. It is like flashing the Wm6 Roms for Wizards. Will report my findings in a bit.
@ KYPHUR : Still waiting for your ROM and will definitely flash yours too. See, it is a benefit to having a couple devices of each flavor. :D
MY REPORT:
=============
1. NO PTT
2. NO Internet Calling (This is a BUMMER. Hope KYPUR has not disabled this if he has a copy of the ROM that has this integrated)
3. Storage : 41.09 MB | Program : 24.48 MB
4. ROM Version: 3.22.110.1
5. ROM Date: 01/04/07
6. Camera Works fine (Was mostly an issue with Wizard Wm6 Roms)
7. Feels Pretty Fast. Faster than the New Cingular ROM.
8. Has the Default Themes.
9. No LIVE Applications. It came as default in Wizard ROMS (stripped hence the "vanilla"?)
10. Office Application Shortcuts have to created Manually.
11. Has Different Icons for HSPDA/UMTS (SA rom had this Cingular did not [WM5 of course]).
12. Have to apply Cingular ShoeString Keyboard Fix for the Keyboard to operate properly in 8525.
These are just preliminary observations. I will post more as I see them.

I will say right now that this is not my work.
I'm downloading it to see if I can determine which rom is the base..
I'm not bothered by this, like I said I want everyone to have crossbow.
Is it too hard to intergrate your mods into this rom? That way you don't have to worry about effecting your connection at all? At any rate, I still EAGERLY look forward to your release!!!

Got it running on my device (Softbank version) so far runs really smooth. Though as others mentioned, no remote desktop app, video calling missing (though a vkey app is in the windows folder that seems to be the video calling app). Very nice release though I gotta say compared to my last Rom. :)

Installed on my JasJam and install was as others confirmed very fast. There are no signs of Live in the windows directory which did exists in the beta offering from M$.
I was able to setup my ISP connection, using Cingular GPRS, and sync with my work exchange server. All is well in that area.
Have to go to bed but will post more tomorrow. Eager to see what everyone else was able to accomplish. :)

OK.. just set up all of my Three setting... I don't know if its just me, but my data connection (news etc through Planet3) seems a lot quicker. Reception also seems better - I'm getting 2 bars where normally I would have one - interesting, because I'm using the radio rom from the last HTC test ROM.
Windows itself is a LOT faster - no lag when sliding the screen out now, where there was before. You can tell WM6 was designed around the Hermes, works fantastically.
Going to set up Resco/TomTom etc now and see how she goes then, but by far its the fastest ROM I've used yet.

One last stupid question (from stupid 'ol me) It used to be you couldn't do these updates from Vista then somebody earlier stated that they ran the upgrade sucessfully from Vista 64bit - do I need to wait till I have access to an XP machine tomorrow or does Vista work now with upgrading?

Really?? All of your apps are restored? It would seem that since you did not restore the registry (which is good that you didn't) that most of your apps would not operate correctly...

I did have one problem, upon resseting the device, I would get an error "TrayIcon_MannerMode" cannot be opened etc...

There is a new SetHSDPA.exe file in the wiki that will allow you to turn it on. Mine is working fine now.
Does it really get deactivted with every SOFT reset. That doesnt make sense since if it runs normally once from the PreConfig and never agian and still sticks throughout many soft resets, then why if you run it manually does it stop on soft reset and require the run th .lnk agin?
EDIT: It does disable with every reset....might be dealbreaker. Doesnt make sense though seeing it sticks when run in the Preconfig.
Also does WM6 have MS CF2 builtin?
EDIT: It Must WiFiFoFUM did not complain for CF2 as with WM5.

Some of the symbol keys are assigned to the wrong position using Cingular 8525.
Like -, _, ;, ?, ! etc...when I use the function key to type it, completely different symbol comes out.
All the alphabets and numeric keys are fine. Just the symbol keys...

OK, I've played with it, and it's to my liking :-) Pretty stable.
Questions are:
1. What are consequences in installing WM6 with AKU2.3 and AKU 3.3? I have AKU2.3... As I still haven't got the E sign, isn't it where I should be digging?
2. How do I remove the 2-line date? Possible to fit it into 1-line?
3. The Bluetooth sign in the low tray - I remember having seen it at some WM6 pictures... Not for Hermes?
4. Ah, and finally, there is a "sharing violation" when I try to move attachments to SD Card. Instead, they are moved to the Ext_ROM. How can I remedy this?
Thank you

We are proud to release the first vanilla WM6 ROM for Hermes, including the following features:
* Windows Update removed
* Extended ROM functionallity removed
* Extended ROM mounted by default
* Application Security disabled
* Other minor registry tweaks

Extended ROM which I cannot use. But I see it.
Is there a method? Thank you!

I know this is LAME, but...I have a TyTN with the original HTC ROM. Is this Vanilla going to work for me or do I need to SuperCID first then do this OS upgrade?
I also saw that someone wrote that they are getting better reception than before with WM6. Can anyone confrim this? I'm in a weak area for UMTS, it's all around the outside of my house, but when I walk in it goes back to Edge. So with WM6 will I get a stronger UMTS signal?
Thanks for the help!!:)

If you download it as is and run the updater, then if you read what it tells you, it'll explain that it'll happily flash your PDA straight from OOB (out-of-box) and also, no, WM6 won't do anything for your signal strength, that's down to the Radio ROM... I'm still amazed by the placebo effect of updating the OS somehow managing to influence the rest of the phone.

Vanilla is flavor of the day on CHT9000, thank you for putting this together.
After running HERM_MountExtRom.cab, the external rom is both visible and unlocked on this device (HERMES200).
1Gb sandisk card is stable for running GPS program.
Installed RescoPhotoViewer, PB Weather 1.36 to ExtROM and 100% compatible.
Bluetooth ActiveSync works with MS bluetooth stack on notebook.
HTML email shows for both yahoo and earthlink POP accounts.
Programs that install and work are:
PocketBreeze, PB weather, Papago v12, GPRS TrafficMonitor, FlexWallet, and Resco File Explorer, Resco PhotoViewer and Mobem's CEStar 2.8R2a.
Only program that won't install is conduit's pocketplayer v3.01.
UMTS works fine for both data and voice. Unlike in 3.3, I'm not seeing the "H", "U", or "G" symbols for data connections. Instead, after applying the XDALive 0.10 HSPDA Enable "upgrade" and the Wifi init fix, I'm only seeing the "3G" symbol. Other than that - no downside.

Since this is WM6 AKU starts over, there is no 2.3 or 3.3 in this version.

No, not just you. I was trying this for ages yesterday. The Slingbox definitely connects ('cause the light comes on on the front of the box) but as you say, it wont actually play anything whether connected on the home network via wifi or remotely via t'internet.
I'm pretty sure this is a codec issue, but as for finding a way of fixing it, I'm struggling at the moment...
Edit: Yep, definitely a codec problem, attached is the log file that Slingplayer puts in the root directory of my Hermes, I assume you get the same?
Now to find a solution...

No kidding?!
In this case, any difference if folks burn this OS initially with AKU2.3 or 3.3? Mine still lacks the E sign - there's word it's because it's originally with AKU 2.3...

An AKU is like a service pack, you don't start a new OS with a servicepack.
You make it sound like windows Vista should have come out with SP2.

more evidence of a beta rom for this base. Under email configuration if you have an Exchange server connected, the "Message format:" says Plain Text and its greyed out.
Still, I'm digging this so far. Battery life report tomorrow.
HTML works only if you are on Exchange 2007 or use IMAP or POP3. it is a limitation of the exchange 2003

Hi all,
did anyone noticed that the left soft-key in Messaging is 'Delete' now. In WM5 it was 'New'.
I would really like to have the 'New' one back, as it was very handy when quickly sending a SMS.
Now I have to go with the right soft-key 'Menu' and then 'New'.
Any idea if can be and how to change it back ?

This is a change from M$ on all new WM6 devices.
It took me a while to get used to it on my Wizard but now that I am I find it much better. I delete a lot more mail than I create.

Has anyone applied this to a UK T-Mobile Vario II?
I assume that it wipes your operator settings so you have to reconfigure everything. Will the cabs from the WM5 ExtROM that do this actually work on WM6?
Thanks.
