View Full Version : [RELEASE v 0.10] WMXL - Windows Mobile "XDA Live" Edition
kyphur
21st February 2007, 04:03 PM
The First Edition of
Windows Mobile "XDA Live"
for HTC Hermes
I have applied my XDA Live Scripts to the "Vanilla" edition of Windows Mobile 6 for Hermes.
So I present you with Version 0.10 of XDA Live!
Quick FAQ:
Q: How do I install it.
A: The self extracting archive will runthe RUU after it extracts all files. I used The XDA RUU which was modified to push the Des Bootloader to your device. This installer does not require your device to be SuperCID and should work with any Bootloader version.
Q: Will WMXL (Windows Mobile XDA Live) fix my corrupted radio bootloader or otherwise bricked Hermes?
A: If the other tools here can't do it then don't bet the farm on WMXL doing it. The Flashing tools are still the same, no magic pill here.
Q: Kyphur you are such a Guru, how can I be like you?
A: Remember that my head is in the clouds on this one only because I'm standing on the shoulders' of giants. This project owes it's very existence to many other contributers here and they deserve as much if not more of the cudos than I do. The is a team effort, please support everyone who made this possible. (See my post here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1143020&postcount=10)). I have been a member her for only 15 months give or take but I have spent more time reading than doing or posting.
Q: If you embed a program into the Rom how can I remove it (to save memory).
A: You can't remove file that are in the Rom. You can remove the Shortcuts to the programs. Again I will repeat that programs in the Rom do not consume any memory. If you don't want the program simply ignore it and it will not harm you.
Q: Will you still release the scripts?
A: Of course, I have spent this evening building and testing this Rom for Release. Expect this to delay the release of the How-To but it is still coming.
Q: I have more questions...
A: Read this thread. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294809)
Click here for Images (http://WM6.Kyphur.Org/Today%20Themes.asp) of all the Themes I have collected. I've decided that instead of embedding them all, I will remove all but the default Crossbow Theme and add the Aero Theme.
The rest of the collection will be made avaliable via my website this week.
I have integrated the following Applications:
Dictionary Editor
HTweakC v2.1
MS Hearts for PPC
PHM Registry Editor
SMS Backup
StartClean
VJCandelaLite (Flashlight)
Windows Mobile Remote Display (CERDISP)Fixes Specific to using "Vanilla" Base Rom
Office Mobile Folder and shortcuts are restored
Remote Desktop Mobile has been embeddedI have integrated the following Registry Fixes:
By default only the Date Plugin is enabled (and it is set to a single line).
The Today Screen says "XDA Live" and the about screen shows " - XDA" after the OS Build Number.
Pressing & Holding the Comm Button toggles the between Vibrate & Normal.
PDAViet Memory Leak Fix is Applied.
Disabled the warning for Unsigned Applications (Application Lock)Misc:
I have added two "Classic RingTones, (OldPhone-US.wma and OldPhone-UK.wav) for those of us who want to get away from the music and chirping Ringers.
I have removed all carrier customizations, no need to soft reset to avoid customization! This Version is missing:
Voice Call.
Push To Talk.
Smart Dialer.
Microsoft Live! Mobile.
Windows Mobile UpdateBTW, this truly is a group effort.
Without pof & team unlocking I never would have even gone looking for the base Rom.
aChef by aklok_hk is doing the heavy lifting.
Sleuth, ShogunMark, Faria ViJay555, Bepe, Maimach have all been instrumental either directly or indirectly in this project.
Des and the SSPL was another step that got me to this point.
Olipro's RUU Workshop was used to make the installer package.
Of course there are all of the guys who have been doing this before I bought my first PPC Phone, they blazed the trail I simply walk behind them.
Finally, I can't forget my unnamed source. They took a big change passing this along to me. Even though this relase is built on the Vanilla Rom, without that trust I wouldn't have been able to spend that previous week cooking with a WM6 Rom Image.Oh Yeah, here is the download link: WM XDA Live v0.10 (http://rapidshare.com/files/18489423/WM_XDA_Live_v0.10.exe.html)

I will continue development using "Van" as my base so I can release fixes and updates to you.
If I get a better version that I can share (even the original one or an update of it) I will be able to apply my scripts to it so everyone can now join in the development phase of this Rom.

Quick question ... if I flash this ROM and for some reason need/want to go back to the new Cingular ROM (e.g., if I can't get Goodlink to run on this yet) should I have any problem just re-flashing the new Cingular ROM over this XDA ROM?

What's your hardware? For the 8525 you need to use the attached Cab File.

You shouldn't have any problem reverting to another Rom.
Excellent ... you just decreased my productivity tomorrow by about 100%, but such is life....my 8525 is calling for an upgrade. Thanks for doing this!
Dare I ask, but is the next version already in the works (with some of the features noted as "missing" on page one to be integrated .. like voice dial and smart dial)?

Great work, thanks a lot. I will most likely not update to this (as it really doesn't give me anything above the vanilla version that I need), but looking forward to when you can use what is seemingly not a beta-based WM6 :).

Not used to HTweakC but I am trying to unlock the extended rom. I set it in there, save settings exit saving settings and the extended rom doesn't appear - tried a soft reset (I seem to remember having to do that with previous ext. unlocker) and still doesn't appear. Also, it seems there's a certain level of reset every time I soft reset (i.e. recent programs disappear) - is this intentional - is it possible to make these stay through a soft reset?
Thanks again for all your hard work Kyphur!!!

Love this ROM, sofar better than the other! The builtin tweaks definitely help.
So it looks like HTML Exchange Sync support requires Exchange 2007 :( I have a test Exchange 2007 server I set up at work, I'll test it out.
Also, is there any way to get rid of the big glaring XDA LIVE on the today screen and go with the standard WM6 theme? No offense to Kypher, but I'm more of a minimalist kind of guy :)
Anyone have that file handy?

Yes, but just an idea. I think the information that keeps disappearing for you is stored in the registry. If the WM6 registry is anything like the WM5 version, changes to it are not immediatelly written to Flash memory, but are cached in RAM. To flush the most recent registry changes to permanent memory, switch off the device (press the power button for some seconds) and back on rather than using the soft reset pinhole.
Cheers

Tried that as well and still it disappears. Both resetting with the stylus and reseting with the power button shut down both result in loss of settings - I wonder if the registery is being reset on each restart?

In fact now that I go back and look, none of HTweakC settings don't seem to stick, I save them and then when I go back, they haven't stuck at all - is the Registery protected somehow to prevent editing?

May I be annoying and ask if anyone has attempted to install the CAB used to enable the video calling on the Cingular Rom? I would try if I could find it. I searched through 70 pages of the Cingular thread, to no avail :S.

I just updated to the vanilla Wm6 ROM, but I assume that this one will be the same wrt. VoIP calling.. I installed pof's CAB file, so now I have a "Internet Calling: No Service" on the Today screen... Am I missing something somewhere, I can't figure out where to define my SIP servers, etc.
9 more minutes before I can download the XDA-Live ROM...

Try a "shut-down and turn back on" reset by holding the power button then pressing "yes". I figure the OS then saves any changes and it might not pop-up next time you turn back on. A soft reset is like pressing reset on your pc, you lose any changes that arent saved, this may be one of them?!

In fear of getting flamed by other posters, I have read absolutely everything I can get my hands on. In defense of the previous poster, the first post doesn't actually say anything about video calling. It says this version doesn't include "voice calling" not "video calling". Is that a typo?

Excellent ... you just decreased my productivity tomorrow by about 100%, but such is life....my 8525 is calling for an upgrade. Thanks for doing this!
Dare I ask, but is the next version already in the works (with some of the features noted as "missing" on page one to be integrated .. like voice dial and smart dial)?
Many thanks for that! Me too gonna get a very low production at work today ;-)
Will there be soon the other mentionned versions, such as clean package?

Here with cingular, they don't check for Super CID or Sim unlock etc when replacing devices. I don't how much time other providers have to do this check on each and every device that comes back.

Hi, there ... i think thats not an "feature" of the new rom...
have seen that also on my aku 3.3 rom...
some times i have full reception but sometimes only 2 bars left... (all in same place...) and i also know what it is....

think this indicator isn't significant as everyone beliefs...

Remember though that broken devices will often be refitted to ship as replacements to other customers. Depending on the refitting methods (surely no real repairing, but switchting to the bootloader and trying to reflash probably is part of that) the service department may notice - depending on your contract, replacements are not always new devices! So you'll get the replacement in the shop, but a month later or so it'll be billed to you full price...
didn't get that. you working with vodafone or any network?

Are you finding that when you go into HTweakC 2.1 and look at the menu Tweaks > Phone, that the Enable and Disable HSDPA buttons are blanked out? Does this mean its enabled automatically?
I'm getting the 3G icon, and sometimes the G icon when I'm not in 3G coverage. Previously on my AKU2.3 Rom, the network would report "UMTS Vodafone NZ" when I was in a 3G enabled zone, and "Vodafone NZ" in a GPRS zone.
With this new rom, it says "Vodafone NZ" all the time, but the icon changes from 3G and G as it did previously.

I installed the live messenger beta, and it appeared to work fine. I signed in without any issues while it was connected using activesync. Seems to also work fine wirelessly.
Although I have come across another problem. Anyone else experiencing a problem where you use your wireless successfully, then after disconnecting from wireless, you try connecting using HSDPA/UMTS/GPRS to surf, and it refuses to connect? Only a soft reset seems to allow me to reconnect for some reason.
Its not a major for me since in New Zealand it costs us $10 per megabyte, so its too expensive to use.

Gone is the time, where Windows Mobile PDAs performed a hardreset, when they ran out of battery power but with the introduction of Windows Mobile 5, Microsoft introduced the persistent storage for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs as well, as introduced before with the launch of the Windows Mobile Smartphone.
However, from time to time it can happens, that the device either needs a hard reset or, because or a malfunction, the device performs a hardreset of itself. Also, after a ROM update, all data and installed applications are gone and reinstalling all the favorite applications can take some time.
That's where, Teksoft's Airwizard can become handy. AirWizard is a unique Desktop PC tool that creates a compressed, self extracting installer can take several CAB files, a splash image and a readme text file with instructions which can be executed directly on a Pocket PC or Smartphone. With AirWizard you can create one single installer for all your favorite programs, put it on your web server and after a hardreset, ROM update or device change, you can download it over the air and install all your favorite applications at once.

Remove StartClean.lnk from the Startup Folder then your recent programs list will stay.

This might be the same problem i noticed when i upgraded to AKU3.3. The O2 pda site seemed to not recognise the browser as one of a pda, and redirected me to the text-only wap site. Opera works fine (but its not free).
So in other words theres a problem with our operators not supporting the new IE rather than an actual problem with the IE version.

As we test by creating Cab files (to reduce the number of times we flash our devices each hour;)) I could make some updates available as Cabs.
Understand that installing Cabs will consume storage memory.
The upside is that you can get the new fixes and wait longer to do a full flash. I guess we need to see if there is interest in that option.

Heres a quickie..
Will future releases include updates for this version or will we be looking at a complete rom reflash, in otherwords losing all the data and programs installed again? It takes me hours to rebuild after a rom update.
Waiting to load XDA live...
Ps Many thanks to those behind this release, whoever you are!

I have made the transition successfully this morning...

Did that and I see the G symbol. Switched back to Auto and I see 3G again. This is confirmed by browsing during a call.
The best thing is that I seem to be able to dial out at the first attempt instead of the old problem of dialling four or five time before connecting. Anyone else seen improvements with this issue?

Just a suggestion: Instead of releasing a totally new ROM, would it be possible to just release CAB files so people can choose between Smartdial, video call, PTT for themselves?
kyphur

I will be doing that as intermediate fixes. These cab file will be specific to WMXL and will not work on the Vanilla Rom though.

I have read through all the thread and want to get confirmation before I attempt to upgrade and potentially brick my device.
I am still running the origional Orange UK ROM and have NOT SuperCID my device. I only SIM unlocked it.
Do I need to use the SSPL to load this new ROM?
Or just run the installer that comes with it?

Kyphur, I really like that cab file update idea.
After some play time this morning I've noticed the following from Vanilla:
1 - Data Symbol always shows 'U' even when I'm connected, the area I live in only has Edge right now so when I am connected the symbol above the signal bars has and 'E' but the main symbol always shows 'U'
2 - Everything in the UI is much faster in this ROM.
3 - Phone calling is much more stable even though the radio is the same (using 1.33 from the cingular 2.06 rom.). I've been on a conference call for work for almost 4 hours now, walking around my house, outside and a quick trip to the store with no problems. (Gotta love Cingular!)
I've installed the following apps without any problems:
Total Commander
PHM Regedit
Google Maps - External GPS works great
Live Search
XnPocket
YWReader
Still looking for more time after my meetings today to test apps using data connections to test stability. Overall things are looking really good.

Does nobody prefer to use the real WXML rom as the basis for further work, why everybody is so exited, it are just betas, both the vanilla and the basis rom in WXMML V0.10!
Letting kyphur working on his own project with his final rom, is the better alternative i think, than building patches over patches for nothing since we got the final and no beta rom from kyphur.
Of Course it is great to have crossbow on our little babys, but a beta core is and ever will be a beta core...
However - thanks to all who make this happend!

Guys,
Excuse me, How do I remove XDA LVE from my Today Screen, I use an image of my family and it just come across the image.
Thanks and regards
From the wiki:
Put custom text on bottom-right of Today screen
You can set some piece of text on the bottom-right of the Today Screen by setting the following key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\DeviceBeta\Today = "Hello World" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
Please note that this text won't take up Today item text. It will be obscured by Today items.
Just delete the values of that key.

Now, I DON'T know if Kyphur really allows this. Waiting for confirmation :)

i never get a security message on my phone. it acts like the installer never actually communicates with the phone. it gets to the step where the phone normally reboots and starts the upgrade process but with this installer it simply kills my active sync connection and then tries for a few minutes before telling me it's not going to work.

I imagine no longer than it'll take a carrier to release their hacked-up non-beta version of WM6...
The Vanilla release you're seeing now is more of a preview, as far as I'm concerned. It gives us all a chance to use WM6, while still looking forward to an actual release.

Before upgrade, I copied the cabs from my Extended_ROM, when I had flashed the phone with the XDA Live ROM, I installed the cabs that were in the Ext_ROM (before upgrade).
This gave me access for video calling, but no dialpad keys, so I installed the TyTN_Blue_215_100_0.cab file that I found in the WIKI, and all works great now with video calling.

Idea: For example you want the latest AKU 3.3 Ext ROM from Cingular with the new WM6 XDA ROM OS. Use Olipro Kitchen ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Hermes/ModifiedRUUUpdater-V2.rar
You can extract the XDA WM6 Vanilla, add your radio and your ext rom and you should atleast have a Full RUU.

I believe it's a beta of WM6 that is wrapped inside XDALIVE. This is based on the "Vanilla WM6" that was just put out here earlier. This is more of an initial release of the XDALIVE that kyphur is working on. That is still planned for release by this weekend, according to kyphur. I think he wants to get all the bug info from everyone on this one first to tweak his some more. There's a dedicated thread for that.

It's a Beta release of XDA Live... I guess...
This is XDA Live that's built around a Beta ROM. When kyphur gets the go-ahead from his source (or WM6 for Hermes is officially released), he'll release the REAL version (i.e. not Beta).

Sorry, nothing for me to be proud about though. Just means I have less important things to do.

I can also confirm that it updates perfectly, and it seems to be stable!
At last I can stop using Flexmail for the HTML mails which Outlook now handle!! :D
thanks for this WM6,
One question though, i have read some posts that this is a beta release? is it WM6 that is beta or is it XDALIVE?
Both of these versions are the same ROM, The XDA live just has some of kyphurs changes, (which he made to his wm6 ROM) to this ROM. So they are the same and therefor both beta.

HTML is activated if you use either Exchange 2007 OR imap (don't know about pop3)
Another question, is there any way to apply language cab files (if they exists) to change UI language (just curious) and more importantly, can one change the keyboard layout to resemble ones hardware keyboard (in my case: swedish qwerty )

I have flashed my swedish TyTn with this, unlock your extended rom first and copy at least P_Nordic_keypad_mapping.cab. That shall be done with your swedish WM5 OS of course before you flash XDA Live 0.1
Then when you have flashed XDA Live you can install that cab and the swedish hardware keyboard works as before. I can just say that I love this rom even if it is beta it feels faster and more stable than the other roms.

If this is just an OS Flash then your current Ext_ROM will still be there correct, and upon the first hardreset the old Ext_ROM will run? I hope this is true.
