Trivial GPRS connecting problem?? HOW TO STOP IT

I only got the orbit 2 days ago and am still finding my way around it? I can't help but feel its often starting to connect to GPRS without my saying so, am fearing a rather large bill! Please can anyone help me and let me know how to disable automatic GPRS connection?

Errr, you do know that GPRS doesn't charge per minute, don't you? Being connected for 30 minutes, but transmitting only a few bytes of data will cost you next to nothing.

yes i do know but things like messenger and ie had opened so shouldnt be too much
