Hi everyone, i am getting more and more people asking me about HTC Athena so i decide to post a new thread about it with all the information.

From the information i heard and from what people are saying in 3GSM, the HTC Advantage and T-mobile Ameo won't be available until beginning of April at least. And also they have lock it to t-mobile network, and currently there is no unlock method for it.
The only Athena available (unlock to any network) is the DOPOD U1000 in Taiwan, it's the same machine just under a different brand. It's got silver finish like the Ameo, (i heard the finish is much better than Ameo, it's got metal finish) so if you are after the black one, you need to wait for Advantage.

Since DOPOD U1000 is already available in Taiwan, and my family is there, so i can do you guys a favor of ordering for you. My parents are the direct reseller of DOPOD, so the price will be a little bit under the Market price, which is £600 /$1150 . It will be cheaper than expansys or Mobile planet, but most importantly, it's available now, so you can get it if you don't want to wait.

So this is how it works, i don't have the machine with me so once i get your payment or deposit, i will order one for you, because they don't ship internationally, once i order, it will shows up at my parent's office next day, and to save time, they can ship out directly to your country on that day, it will take about 4-5 days for it to arrive to US OR UK. So once you pay, you should get it within 1 week.

Now for the payment, i accept all kinds of reasonable suggestion, but please understand one thing, since i am doing the favor for you guys, i won't risk myself and nor i am trying to make a profit on it. So if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. I have an ebay account, i can put a private listing on then you can buy there, or if you are in London, i can meet up and hand you the machine with cash, or you can transfer money to my bank account, then i ship out the item for you. For UK buyer, i will also accept postal order. If you decide to pay by paypal, you will need to add the extra tax on, which is 3% i think? (need to check on that)

Now this is what you will get, the DOPOD U1000 Silver Athena with CHINESE rom, yes it's chinese ROM, you can surely change it to english rom later. The keyboard layout is exactly the same (unlike german keyboard) but there will be small chinese symbol on it, it's how we use to type chinese. It won't make any difference if you don't use it. Of course the manual will be in chinese, but i think there will be english part on it as well, or you can download from internet. The charger will be in chinese charger (the same as US one i think, but not sure), all you need to do just plug in a converter or buy a new adapter. And don't forget, you can always use to USB to charge your PDA as well.

So after reading all this, if you still want the device, let me know, or PM me, or post question here, i will try my best to help.

I just got a confirm that the postage to US, UK, and similar country will cost £50, i will be able to put the parcel as gift, so you should be able to avoid customs Tax. I might can put the price down if a large amount of people want it, or to ship to the same country.

p.s. The phone is unlock to any network, so no matter where you are, you can use it with no problem.

Ok, i think there are a few confusion here about the language and english rom update ability. The DOPOD U1000 is in chinese, if you are a heavy PDA user, then it shouldn't be a problem since you already know which icon does what. And the new software you install yourself will all be in english. But if you want all your menu and settings to be in English, you can install the CE-STAR SUITE, like this one : http://www.expansys.com.hk/p.aspx?i=144165 . It basically translate all the User interface into english, so all your setting will be in english. Or the final and most complete way is to do a ROM upgrade to english ROM. Dopod u1000 will 100% have no problem doing the english Rom upgrade, so why don't people do it now? It's because English Rom is not out for Athena yet, or in another word, Athena is not out in english market yet. That's why some member here choose to buy it from me, they will use their machine now, and when English Rom is available, they will upgrade it.
So When is English Rom available? Answer is simple, when Ameo is out in UK (not anywhere else) or when Advantage is out,then you will be able to use their ROM to upgrade to english.
I hope this is clear enough, have been seeing too many confusion in a few thread.....

Well, if you understand chinese, you can order them online, but the problem is they don't ship internationally, that's why i need to ask my parents to help me, they live in Taiwan. The cost of the machine is £600, and the shipping is around £50, if i get charge far more than £50 for shipping, i will let you know. But £650 should be all

Another good news is apparently, the build quality of DOPOD u1000 is higher than expected. I here confirm again, it uses a different material than T-mobile Ameo, the DOPOD U1000 has a metal finish which boost up the feel of this machine.

Man, i really can't wait now, if i am lucky, i should get mine tomorrow :)

I found a way with walky talky from garmin
it has GPS and Show the other same device in the range on map

Yes it is in chinese, however the new program you install will be in english, so for example, Pocket Informant, iLauncher, they will all be in english. So won't be a big problem for user who know every function of PDA by heart already

Good news, you will get one as well since you order yours quite early. The quality is very good, these headset is for sell for £60 on HTC website. I won't open mine since i already have a BT Headset, but these gift one are black, and stand by time is 150 hours. and you can listen to music with it. and yes mic built in.

becuse IMEI must be Register in TCI Network (when it is in GOMROK(Air-Port))

The I-mate Ultimate 7150 will be a pretty strong contender with superior O/S and higher TV out resolution, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. Plus its screen is too small and CPU lacks the oommphh factor of its bigger brother found in the Ameo.

I for one can no longer consider any other device until I've had the Ameo. Once it gets WM6 with Video calling support, it will be the undisputed heavyweight of all PPC's.

Just my biased opinion though. :)

The I-mate Ultimate 7150 will be a pretty strong contender with superior O/S and higher TV out resolution, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. Plus its screen is too small and CPU lacks the oommphh factor of its bigger brother found in the Ameo.

I for one can no longer consider any other device until I've had the Ameo. Once it gets WM6 with Video calling support, it will be the undisputed heavyweight of all PPC's.

Just my biased opinion though. :)

After using the DOPOD U1000 for 5 days, i really LOVE it, the screen is amazing big and clear. Speed is really good! Worth every money i spend !

Hi, i know i lot of you guys are waiting for Advantage to come out, i have a bad news, i just spoke to HTC engineer, they confirm they are delaying this item possible to end of April or beginning of May unless they can sort out their ROM problem magically. Basically, they have a big bug on their Rom which is to do with how they handle the Micro drive. The method they use makes the Micro Drive slow and unsafe and also Drain a lot of battery.

It's not a small issue so they need to re-write the Rom, they already ask for help from DOPOD, but i have been told even with the help they get, they still need to go through many testing before they can launch the device. So again, they have to delay the item until they can sort this out.

I also need to report this, DOPOD and Ameo don't have this problem, Ameo Rom was based on the DOPOD one, and DOPOD one is the correct and stable Rom, so these 2 machine are fine.

I will keep you guys updated if any good news ( or bad news) from HTC.

BTW, i have played with HTC Advantage for testing, and i can tell you the speed is noticeable different (at testing stage). Didn't realize the HDD is not correctly implemented at that time. Anyway, i am sure when it comes out, all issue will be solve, but eventually, HTC Advantage user will upgrade their ROM to either DOPOD one or T-mobile one, because HTC lacks of Update support.

There will never be a perfect machine, we always wanted more function or smaller size. So choose the best device which suites you (not necessary the most expensive one). In this case, i am very happy with my DOPOD U1000. It's exactly what i need.

Need some help, every time I put any UK sim in to the dopod, It pops up with network wizard to select Network provider etc (I think). any way if i push what i think is cancel, it disappears, i then get service, however if i try and make a call the telephone signal displays ! and i lose reception. can you help? By the way i try it with Vodaphone and T-mobile UK. Also do have an english skin for the Inteli dialer? or is there a way to copy one over so the buttons are in english? Thanks in advance.

right, i can not remember the setting, i think when it pops up, you should choose the second option from the menu
also, did you restore anything in any kind? like did you copy the old PIM file to your new device?

that's exactlt what happen to mine, after you copy the PIM, the phone won't work, and the device become laggy, i think it's to due with different version of Windows Mobile. You can have all your contact and appointment back if you sync to your pc and sync back. But please don't use the PIM copy method, it doens't work anymore for new machine

no , i can't think of any third part, you might can change it through registry, but i don't know the key. Anyway, hehe, don't install too many software, English ROM is comming soon :)

Hi guys, just to let you know i have just spoke to HTC, they are releasing the Advantage in a month or two ( well, they can't give me anything better, like weeks or something). But as you might know already, a website is already offer pre-order of Advantage and it says it's available from 9th.

So i guess that answer our question, Advantage is coming soon.
Also want to share this with you guys, i have also spoke to the engineer, they confirm the Micro Drive issue is fix (using the DOPOD way). So this shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Dopod u1000 is already in Malaysia..but when i asked the Dopod authorised dealer to flash mine to english rom, they said that they afraid that it will destroy the device as they said the GSM code is different.

Could anybody clarify this ?

Maybe Athena is the King of PPC today. However, one basic feature for King of Mobility should be being able to do various things while on the move.

One issues for all PPC including Athena is how do they handle online financial transactions i.e. internet banking which requires java applets for signing in? Most of Internet Banking site use java applets for security log in.

Even Athena cannot open these java applets required to do internet banking.
Anybody knows how to enable a PPC for transactions using these type of java applets?

I think we better wait..i went to a shop which claim can flash the rom..at the end they couldn`t. They told me there is no english rom available.

these device are 100% the same, just the colour is different, just because you like black doesn't mean everyone likes it, it's down to personal taste, we DOPOD user has already got our hand on this device for about a month now, and trust me, even you get the HTC Advantage, you will be flashing the DOPOD ROM in the future, because there is no update what so ever for HTC.

Done it .... @WU, decompiled and extracted the files required to get English Language on our ROM; At this point I can confirm all functions are working i.e Notification GPS etc etc.correctly. Also we can seemlisly go back to chinese if we want! I will copy a CAB file up to FTP shortly. You can test it and then distribute with all the usual disclaimers. For those whom are instance on reflashing there is no need; the Taiwan Rom is newer because it is based on the English, with the Chinese customizations. However if there is demand then I will copy up a flash. Almost Forgot, Cant take the credit; Credit to Dutty and Asukaly for producing the tools to create and extract the files.

Good news guys, i have just been inform by HTC that WM6 Update will be available for DOPOD U1000 in summer, this is official and confirm.

Funny that they didn't mention the Advantage upgrade to me, i am guessing it's because they are selling the WM6 Advantage as a separate product (HTC X7501). If they offer free upgrade to HTC X7500, then really no one is going to buy the 7501.

And also it might be because of their policy, you see HTC has never brings out any ROM update in the past, and is unlikely to do so in the future as well.

Anyway, not a big deal really, Advantage user can flash the DOPOD ROM when it's available in Summer. For DOPOD user, i am happy to tell you all we will be getting the WM6 Update officially :)

hi wu. i'm chatting from Dubai, UAE. we dont have the advantage yet but i heard its coming in early may. some have said it will cost around 1100 USD. however, from what i have read from your posts, it seems the dopod are being taken care of more than the HTC advantages for various reasons you mentioned. I need the english version advatange with arabic later on, would it be worth getting a dopod although the black version, advantage, looks better?

i could be travelling to singpaore in june for some work..i guess the dopiod is selling over there but is it worth getting it?

ask yourself a question, which colour you like more, black or silver, if it's black, then get the Advantage, if it's silver, then get the DOPOD. I have no idea when the advantage will be out, they keep telling is delaying again. Anyway, if you are traveling to singpaore, i suggest you get the DOPOD there, it's in english.

They are exactly the same machine, one doesn't look better then the other, it's down to personal taste on colour, "PERSONALLY" i prefer the silver one.

Guys, more news from DOPOD, it's has been confirm that in 2 months time, there will be a ROM Update which will including their newest technology of GPS Photo, basically when you take a photo, GPS Position will also be recored as well, so you can show it on map, or even download GPS Photo on net which will tell you how to get there. This is all happening in about 2 months time.

wu5262, this is great to hear. Thanks for keeping us informed. This is not a breakthrough step for HTC though. The HP6965 which HTC builds for HP has the same capability you mention above since its release last year. Its way too cool.

Yes, this isn't a brand new technology from HTC, i have use it before on HTC Trinity, hope they will improve it a bit for Athena.
