Edit: Did a test with ATTO Windows Disk Benchmark with the card in the cardreader slot in my laptop.

Also did the same test on a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB card.

The two cards have practically the same read speed, 10 MB/s, but when it comes to write speed, the Sandisk is more than 3 times faster, app. 6.2 MB/s, and this of course is clearly noticeable when copying large files to the card.

as a warning, people on other forums over the internet have reported that there are some fake cards out there that rip people off...
they sell cards saying that they have 4gb but instead it is just a 2gb, hacked someway to say its 4gb!

a cynic might say that the branded companies are only releasing sdhc cards because they cost more to buy.
but that's why i started this thread - to weed out the 'bad' sellers.
i would like people to post their own info and experiences, and they can always edit their post if the card fails at a later time.
one issue suggests that 4gb cards are real - why can only the newer serial numbered wizards recognise them? if the cards are all hacked 2gb cards, then all wizards should be able to see them, shouldn't they?

Well, my cheapo-ebay-sourced 4GB mini SD's been faultless in my Wizard. It's full of 3.5GB MP3s and all my apps and I've had no trouble whatsover. Cost me £23 inc postage.

Total: 3835.00 MB. So far so good. can't complain. It's as fast as my old one (haven't test it though but works fine with my mp3s and games installed there).

Mines a U-TEK. It always works great for about a month and even benchmarks faster than my 2 GB card. Unfortunately after a month of use though it always decides to corrupt itself so after about 4 moths of having to reformat and put everything back on it I went back to my 2 GB card and only use it when I want to watch the movies and things that I have on it.

Dang... I had a 512MB Sandisk mini-SD card that I pulled everything off. I used WM5torage to do this and it took maybe 5 mins total. I then put the new 4GB card in and started WM5torage and tried to upload onto it. After 20 mins (and not even a quarter of the way through) it failed with an error. I then stopped and restarted WM5torage and moved folders over individually. Slow as heck to do this. I spent over 1.5 hours restoring about 200MB of stuff from my PC to my new card.

Now this morning I flashed a new rom. Went to my SD card and started installing apps I use. Did a soft reset and now I get errors trying to access some of the folders on the SD card (most are fine but my setup folder isn't). Soft reset and now the phone can't see the SD card at all :(. I'll try to reformat the card and maybe install the stuff directly on the card (instead of going through the phone) then putting it in. But right now, I'm not too confident this card is any good :(

See my reply to you in the other thread, but basically I reformatted the card in my PC and now its working. I'm giving it some time (only 3 days so far) to see if this has rescued it or not (I still don't trust the card). I reformatted it as FAT32 and it actually seems faster now.

I think most people with wizards will be using mini sd cards, so you could try the hermes forum...
Also 'Branded' cards are generally safe so I doubt anyone felt the need to post about them (unless they're fakes?):)

No. The wizard isn't compatible with SDHC as of yet. From what I've read on a few tech blogs, all it will take is a firmware update for most phones to become compatible, but no one seems to be coming out with those updates very quickly. That was also just a general statement about phones being able to become compatible so the wizard might not even be included, bu t we can always hope.

There seems to be a reliability issue with 4GB cards. A good proportion of cards which work fine at first seem to corrupt or break down entirely after hours or weeks. This could be because 4GB non-sdhc cards aren't supported by any industry standards and the ceiling is supposed to be 2GB, which means they're not being made by reliable big-name companies. Having said that I'm using a fake 2GB Sandisk without problems for the last year but I guess the design might have been copied from elsewhere.
I recently tried a 4GB fake Kingston card which worked great for all of two hours so I'm not prepared to play russian roulette with my data. They're cheap enough not to worry about the lost money too much, but lost data is something else. I'll probably compromise and use a cheap mp3 player for music. 2GB is plenty big enough for applications and e-books. Convergence will have to wait for SDHC support.

If you are a victim of buying memory hacked mini sd card Follow this method to remove memory hack from your mini sd. You will end up with lesser memory capasity but atleast working memory card.

This method originaly used for remove memory hack from mp3 mp4 players. But this tool can be use with any removable storage card.

And using this tool, you can properly format your genuine 4gb minisd in to FAT32 and 512k clusters.

If you could make the SDHC card work with this driver and the only reason you uninstalled was wifi .... then install a new radio driver, it will start working.

It does say O2 XDA Mini S though (and MDA Vario) which are both Wizards so these should be non-SDHC cards and stand a chance of working.
That's not to say it will work for more than a few hours though so please read the other posts on the subject of 4GB cards before you spend money or possibly worse, lose data. Remember, non-SDHC 4GB cards are not industry standard.

Okay, so is there a consensus on what 4 GB cards seem to be reliably working on the Wizard yet? I will go with a 2 GB card if need be, but I would much rather have a 4 if I can get one that actually seems to keep working.

Given several positive reports about the Topram 4GB MiniSD I took the plunge and ordered one off eBay. Anyway, total cost to me in the UK was £13.45 (auction won at £7.50 - shipping from US £5.95). Took about 5 days to arrive.

Card was formatted Fat32 out of the box and includes mini>standard adapter and a cheap USB card reader. Just plugged it into my PC, copied the files off my old 2GB card and plugged it into the wizard. Wizard hung at first boot but that's happened before (soft reset a few times to test and it's fine). Card recognised OK at full capacity. Card now holding over 3GB of files so can confirm it's real useable space.
Funny thing is there is no direct link to a 4GB MiniSD card on the Topram.com site, they only admit to making up to 2GB. Look around though and you'll find a directory full of info for their eBay listings... http://www.topram.com/ebay/2007/4gbminisd/

I've a G4 Vodafone VPA Compact II (bought one year ago in germany) and few weeks ago I've bought a 4GB takeMS miniSD from an Italian shop on ebay...i won the auction for 13€ :). The cards works withouth problem and the space recognized is 3748.66 MB.

Sorry to say it does not work so ar for me. I had a 4Gig SDHC that worked perfectly, but went bad on me suddenly. So I ordered this 8Gig Kit.

But no it is not working. I will try with the SDHC drivers floating around.

mine worked just fine for few weeks. then decided to go stupid... i format the succker and it never worked again. Ebay some $40
shipped.

So, has anyone that has a 4 Gb card that decides to corrupt itself on a regular basis under WM5 tried it out under WM6 long enough to know if it still does it on a regular basis?
