I've just been thinking...what is your dream device?

What would HTC (or any PPC Phone manufacturer) have to develop to get you to put your Hermes in your mobile phone collection drawer?

I'd love to know what is your perfect PPC Phone Device! Let's get the perfection specs listed here.

If Apple can get 2 gigs into a Nano why can't HTC get 2gb in a PPC phone?

I agree. At first I though if Cingy released the Hermes like it was supposed to be with the front camera then that would be enough. But actually I could give a rats about the front camera. I think you are right on target.

Why is it that they can't increase the rom to a gig? Is there a technical reason why that is the case?

Yes I Was Thinking That Just Today. It Would Be So Much Easier For All Of Us Who Are Right Handed.

Use a screen that dosen't suck as much as a lot of other TS-phones do in sunlight/outside. Something that Neonode has used for years now on the N1.
Suport regular SDHC memcards, GPS and a OS that shows some inovation (WM7 anyone)..

They could release this same phone in a second edition or anything else they want to call it and add a few features.

More internal storage memory is a MUST. I cannot think of a single reason for being limited to around 45-60mb when Nokias and SonyEricssons are getting double that at the least.

Internal GPS also needs to be there. I never understood why people would want it until I finally tried it. It is not just about navigation. It gives access to location based information regarding restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and just about any other business you may need and their phone numbers...yeah, plus directions to the location!

A NO CAMERA option and a better camera for those who choose the camera. We don't all want one on the phone since we can't take them certain places...like work. However, those that do want it should have a better camera installed. I do not just mean more megapixels. The camera needs to be sharper, faster, clearer, and more accurate for colors. I don't need 7MP on my phone, but the photos I take with it should be worth showing to people, not just big.

More security options for those of us who don't have access to the Exchange server. Many of us might have a hosted exchange service or none at all but we still want access to all of the security feature that other users enjoy.

...and keep the scroll wheel on the left! Right handed folks get everything else made for them. It is nice to have something for me!

I'll Play, I think the "Kaiser" will be close, slightly thinner Hermes with built-in GPS.

I'm OK with 320x240 as the Hermes is quite good, I have an iPaq hx4700 with a HUGE 640x480 screen with excellent outdoor readability so who wouldn't love a ultra crisp display.

I have always wondered why the heck these companies won't give us a couple of GIG extra storage. I'd also prefer mini SD so we could use a cheaper and I think more common 8GB SDHC card.

Thumb wheel. Well I've played with a friend's Blackberry and it is better on the right (for us right handers).

Can't wait to see the Kaiser, one step closer to the perfect "all-in-one"

Hmm, let me see (in order of preference)

Built in DAB digital radio

GPS

Built in FM/AM radio

A screen the same size as my Hermes but with higher resolution.

Better camera (maybe 3mp but also better quality metering and focusing)

Mini SD slot or large (6gb) int memory

3.5mm headphone socket

Better quality loudspeaker

Better layout of buttons on front of device (I have a SPV M3100)

Once the qwerty slide is out, it would be nice to be able to tilt the screen towards you.

An clip-on external wifi ariel to boost signal as standard in the box

Also just imagine the processing power and RAM of even a cheep laptop in a PPC. You could attach an auxiliary 9" screen, mini keyboard and run a version of windows far closer to the desktop OS (if not the same). I could even get some web design done on the move then without a laptop. :p

lol, probably got a bit carried away there, but then again when the Nokia 8210 was the mutts nuts 5-6 years ago who would of thought that the Hermes would have been possible!

Form factor is ok, but it would be nice if the screen could be tilted slightly. On the hardware side, I would like to see:
USB host, standard audio jack, GPS would be nice, better design (slimmer and better looking), video out (don't care vga/cinch/...), video in, 640x480 display, ...

My main issues are with the software, before any other hardware, I would like the software to provide more features:
BT PAN, WPA2, better IMAP support, stability (sometimes my startbutton just disappears, sometimes the device just hangs, ...), printerdrivers, ...

Oh, BTW, a printer is not so far fetched: the technology is here (http://www.createch-group.com/projects/printdreams/printbrush/). :D

I'm not that bothered about a better resolution. If the screen size stays the same, I still won't be able to put much more on to it without it being illegible or causing eye strain.

GPS would be nice, as most people have mentioned.

Widescreen would also be nice (although similar DPI to the Hermes).

Separate charger and handsfree connectors.

Better range with the IR!

Improved camera/optics and flash.

Edit:
BTW, the scanner isn't out of the question either http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=252502

seriously though... GPS is all it'd really take.

more storage would be nice I suppose... but with SD cards costing next-to-nothing anyway, and also wanting to keep the battery life, having a 400Mhz processor and the 128 odd megs is OK I reckon.

Cingular offers (offered) a no-camera version of the 8525. I almost went for it but got the camera after all. What I would very much like is a battery cover that bulged out slightly, but doesn't have the cut-outs for the lens and flash. It would conceal the camera, so I could maybe sneak by security and still take it into no-camera places, like a couple of mines and a nuke plant I call on in South America. I wouldn't use the camera, of course  but don't want to be separated from my phone.;)

The downside of that is getting caught and being tossed down a mineshaft or shoved into the reactor core. That would probably ruin my Hermes

Interesting --- I am right handed and like the placement on the left side too! For scrolling --- I would prefer a seperate buttong for the thumb on the right hand side to do the clicking ;)

I'll agree with a couple of the previous posts. The Kaiser is getting close. But, it would be nice if it does have a stronger IR. Also a gig of ram and 4 gigs of storage. A better camera like on Symbian devices would be nice too (like at least 5 mp). If it were slimmer and the screen took up more real estate on the front to bring it up to VGA, that would be great! Oh yeah, some of that spiffy iPhone screen manipulation capabilites would do it. I'm sure there's more I can think of, but that's all I have for now.

I also like the left-sided wheel. I don't understand why you'd want the wheel on the right side if you're right handed. If you use your right hand to hold the phone, how do you write? I always hold the phone in the left hand; this allows me to point/tap with the right hand or use the stylus with the right hand.

Do the people who want the wheel on the right use their right ears for phones/headsets? I find that most of my right-handed friends hold the phone to the right ear, but I've always held phones to my left ear so that I could write notes with my right hand while talking on the phone.

ON TOPIC: I suppose if the Hermes had GPS enabled, or the Trinity had a keyboard I would consider that the holy grail of smartphones for now. As it stands, I'm happy with my Hermes, but probably wouldn't mind having the Trinity either.

holy crap, you mean i can hold the phone up to my ear... i always thought the bluetooth headset was mandatory :D

i would actually like to have a little trackball instead of the scrollwheel, could replace the small button in the 4way pad... that would be great for both lefties and righties...

as a righty I love the wheel where it is, allows my right hand to hold my stylus to click when needed...also allows me to smoke while looking up a contact or whatever.

Thats what I loved the most was that it is in a better placement for me than the Blackberries.

I believe that was HTC's intention too when they placed the wheel on the left side: to allow righties to hold the stylus with their normal writing hand.

I'd actually like a device that has a little bit bigger screen than the hermes. Not quite as big as the universal, but something inbetween. Maybe a 3.1" 640x480 screen.
Since that would change the formfactor a little you could fit more buttons on the keyboard keyboard, there is more internal room so the device isn't so thick, and battery could probably be made bigger overall.

Zilch
16th March 2007, 11:31 AM
I'd have to agree with most of the posts here. I think for people that like the form factor, the Hermes is almost perfect. Almost all of my conmplaints are software related.

(Maybe HTC should write operating systems? :) )

Without going too crazy, my wishlist would read much like the Kaiser spec list:

GPS
More internal storage!
Better battery life
VGA screen
Faster CPU
Better camera
Thinner (not a big deal)

My ultimate wishlist would also include:

Analog radio - The Atom is cool in this respect, and most Nokia phones have an FM tuner. Internal antenna! Sucky thing with the Atom is that you can't use bluetooth headphones as it uses the headphone cable as the antenna.

MUCH more internal storage - at the price and size of MicroSD cards now, I don't get why they can't shove at least 4GB of internal storage into the thing.

External video display - Can you do this over Bluetooth or USB? Either would be fine.

Much better IRDA port, on the TOP of the unit, so that it could be used as a remote control

Screen that is more visible outdoors.

Bar code reader - quicker to use than a software one via the camera

Thermometer/Barometer etc

Front facing speakers

More user-definable hardware buttons

Fingerprint swipe to unlock

Auto-focus camera with stabilisation

Digital radio

USB Host

Ballpoint stylus :)

I have to disagree about the scroll wheel placement comments. I think for right handers it is perfect - you use the stylus with your right hand and hold it in your left.

The headphone jack isn't really an issue. Since it needs a mic and a control signal it pretty much needs to be proprietory anyway. They just need to get their A2DP support working well and no one will care.

Zilch.

The Prototype I saw was closer to the herald in size, hsupa and GP mofo$%#$ S!! - which BTW wasnt working.
I really want one of those 800 x 480 (?) screens, that would be KILLER.
also I am Right handed and think that the trackwheels placement is great b/c I can use my finger or stylus with my right hand.

what do you guys think was HTCs worst phone? Im gonna vote the wizard. Its the least responsive of the three devices I own and in order to make it useful there is an inordinate amount of effort that needs to be put into it.
overclocking, smartskey, Rom upgrade, and thepatience of a saint are required. that being said I was totally addicted to it, I love tweaking.

I'll Play, I think the "Kaiser" will be close, slightly thinner Hermes with built-in GPS.

Quite similar to the TyTN (http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=707&id2=506) until you look at the specs for the display:
3 inch 800x480! That makes it 300dpi...

I don't know about higher resolution being necessary, but more than 65K colors would be killer... I think 262K colors would be really nice.

A dedicated headphone jack... and it should be on the top half of the phone somewhere so that when it is in a car or desk mounted holder, the headphones are still usable, even when the phone is charging through the usb port on the bottom. I'd actually rather it be a 2.5 mm jack, so it can be used as a regular wired pair of heaphones with microphone built in for calls.

Move the PIE and messaging button from where your ear is when you are on the phone (sans bluetooth). I keep turning on PIE and/or messaging when I am on a call.

SDHC compliance

A battery more than 1500 mAh

As said before, a tilting screen.

Also, as said before megapixles are nothing without better light metering and focusing. A bigger lens/higher quality lens would help the pictures here too.

On board GPS would be nice... but the biggest improvement I think in the GPS/mapping would be enough on board memory to store the maps on the phone itself.

More ROM/RAM would be great too.
