View Full Version : [WM6] Text Messages - Delete button

Small question, but is there a way to revert the old 'New' message button we used to have in WM5 back to WM6?

WM6 introduced a 'Delete' button in the Text Messages screen, since MS is convinced people use the delete more often then the new message function.

I hardly delete messages, so really would love to see my 'New' message button returned somehow.

I simply changed one of the two softkeys on the today screen to "New SMS". Now I can start writting sms without even having to open up the messaging application.

You can do this under Start | Settings | System | Soft Key

Hope this helps some of you

Go to start>settings>system then soft key, then you see the screen for left or right soft key, scroll up and down on the left key list and choose new sms, this should do it. :)

I like the program, the only problem is it can only do SMS and MMS. There is no E-mail way of doing this. I tried changing the e-mail setting to my

Mobile.exchange.mail2web.com

and it went through, but never got delivered to my friend. Is there any way to get this to work since i don't really feel like using 2 different program to send out messages?
If not then i guess I'll just set my messaging to only goto Outlook and then use the Today screen plugin for the Palm SMS to use for my text messages.

Where it points to a file can't you scroll until you find new sms then set this? this is how it works, see image below ;)

I tried the cab (tnx a lot) and it works, it did link the left soft key with "new sms" but if i tap it, i get this message: "the file tnsms.exe cannot be opened.Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its componenet cannot be found.if the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring hte file"
Why?
Whats wrong?
If i look manually for the tnsms.exe file in the position the cab said it is i cant find it...
Im running wm6 black edition 1.1...

Have you used HtweakC which is in the list of programmes? If not open it and click on tweaks>security and tick the box that allows non-certified applications, then try to again. :)

Here are the registry settings for the soft keys, in nthis example setting the right one to calendar:

Change Registry:
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Today/Keys/112 and /113

Key "open" in keys 112 and 113 contain the links to the programs (LSK and RSK = Left and Right Soft Key).

My key showed \Windows\RSK\HTCCalendar.exe, I changed it to \Windows\Calendar.exe (I have calendar on right softkey).

Then stop all programs to re-start calendar, and this time it should follow the settings. Every time you change the settings (monthly view to day etc.) stop the calendar.exe, as the settings are read only on a new start

I don't know if a soft reset changes them.

for some reason this file "tnsms.exe" has not been included in this rom, i have highlighted this problem to the author. It can be resolved by copying the file from another rom to the windows directory or to the RSK or LSK directories. Which is what i did.

Everything then works fine. no need for more programs to do the same thing.

if anyone wants the file let me know and i will zip it and upload it.

thanks

Hello, and thanks for a great forum :)

Was wondering if anyone has an update to this thread, would be great to change the "delete" softkey to "new" in messaging.

An alternative to this - if it is impossible to change the softkey, would be to set the qwerty "n" button to be new - as a hotkey. I know I can change the hotkeys here:
HKEY_CurrentUser/Software/Microsoft/Inbox/Settings/Shortcuts/Default/
but I don't know which value data I should set in the code key.
Weird thing that it as default should be "so hard" to create a new message, hehe..

Oh, and one more thing; my girlfriend thinks the solitaire game is too hard to win, you guys got a way to make it easier? Hehe, just kidding ;)

Thanks in advance for any answer!

Whilst we're ranting about how m$ has screwed up the New SMS button (for at least some of us), anyone know a way to return the Mail button to its WM5 behaviour of cycling through each Messaging App in turn?

You can turn this off by going into the SMS folder or one of the other folders.

Go to Menu, Tools, Options and uncheck the box that says "Display account picker when opening Messaging" :)

i saw in a microsoft video demonstration about wm6, the reason they purposely changed it from New to Delete is because they have corporate email in mind and not personal sms. Because microsoft employees and other corporations receive 100+ emails a day, m$ thought it more productive to have a delete button rather than a new button.
not like any of this helps, but dont expect a final release of wm6 to revert back to the new button.

If that was the microsoft reason to put the delete instead of new then at least they could skip the confirmation process ...

Yhe message goes to the deleted items folder so you san always get it back ...

As far as I know it would be enough to modify the outres.dll.0409.mui file. I've already located the MENU resource which holds the message menu. We need to change the text to "New" and its ID to something that creates a new msg.. also not a difficult task.

Then the only thing left would be to cook a new rom, or in some way overwrite it. This should be possible, but first I gotta find out what processes to kill because this file is used by quite a few.

When I have some spare time tomorrow I'll try to overwrite that file.

Hi!

Great! Any news on this issue, I'd really would love to get the "new" option back in the messaging application.

Well.. I hadn't had time to play with that.. I've been pretty busy with my studies recently.

I would have to sign it so that windows loads this library.. but I am sure it's doable.. just give me a week and once I've finished all my university projects I'll be happy to do that.

Has this been implemented in any of the new ROMS? I went back to WM5 just for this reason! It was just too annoying!

The Soft Key applet work great for changing the today screen soft button to "New SMS" but when I click it, it opens up asking me to Select an Account "SMS/MMS/Email", if I click SMS then it opens a new message, still 2 clicks to get to a new message instead of one.

Okay so it's better now but still I hope someone can find a permanent fix to get rid of the "Delete" button for good.

I cannot believe that Microsoft did not build in a simple option to change the button assignments. It's just one little annoyance on what is otherwise a great new mobile OS.

I found a nice working solution to this at this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1524656#post1524656

Open notes and paste the following into a blank note:

20#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to "" -body ""

save this as sms.lnk in the Windows\StartMenu\ folder.
(Use Resco Explorer to make sure the file is named sms.lnk and not sms.lnk.pwi)

Go to Start > Programs and you will see an icon called SMS. Clicking it opens a blank SMS message.

Then download the Soft Button Applet from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39657&d=1179943759

Install it, soft-reset your device and then go into Start > Settings > System > Soft Key
On Left Key choose SMS (and set Right key to whatever you want)

Now you can simply click your left soft button on the today screen to open a blank SMS.

This DOES NOT fix the problem of the delete soft button assignment in Messaging under WM6 but it does give you a one click way of opening a blank SMS. Works for me and I am happy to stop searching for a solution to this delete button issues.

Hope this helps someone.

Oh just a warning, On my T-mobile Wing that software killed my Today wallpaper. I was able to change it back, but a soft reset lost it again. Uninstalling it got it to work. But the right softkey in the registry wasn't there before the install (only 112 no 113). This software creates a 113 entry that can't be deleted. Sooooo I got it working again but still wondering how t-mobile wings set up the right soft key (if they don't there must be an app or a program hack that was disabled when Soft Keys was installed). It also reset my BT name to the owner info instead of the Device Name.
