View Full Version : New radio ROM 1.38.00.10 (from hermes)
pof
15th March 2007, 05:29 PM
I've extracted the radio ROM from latest Dopod chinese ROM and packaged here as a standalone NBH radio upgrade:
HERM_RADIO_1.38.00.10_Only_SSPL.rar (ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Cooked_ROMs/HERM_RADIO_1.38.00.10_Only_SSPL.rar)
This radio has HTC_BOOT 0108 and no GPS enabled.
Keep in mind that the safest procedure to upgrade your radio right now is:
Flash Hard-SPL (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722) v1.10.Oli on your phone
Flash the desired radio upgrade using the RUU package
Both steps have to be done with phone connected to computer through USB cable and activesync enabled, Des SSPL will be pushed into your phone when the RUU starts.
Remember that when flashing a radio only you don't need to hard-reset your phone, so no data will be lost.
Note: Same radio GPS enabled (from trinity) is available here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297651)
Enjoy! ;)

Olipro
15th March 2007, 08:34 PM
no, there is nothing at all special about the x10HT folks...
personally, I recommend everyone uses this one instead of the trinity radio simply because we can't have GPS anyway and for the power you're wasting on non-working chip, it's pointless.

Completely agree, until we can get the GPS on the hermes working (which is unlikely due to bricking risk) there really is no need for us to have the GPS rom from the trin.

Removed the Trinity 1.38 radio very quickly but initial impressions of this native Hermes ROM are far more favourable.
Not had it installed long enough to get an impression of battery life yet but reception and stability seem good so far.

You must start the upgrade using SSPL-1.09, don't flash it with the bootloader on your phone, to do this just make sure you start updating with activesync enabled (green icon) and SSPL will be sent to your phone automatically.

I have it working on my HERM100 in the USA on Cingular.
I am using the LVSW WM6 ROM FYI and have not yet come accross any problems. Flashed just fine.
The 3G>GSM handoffs are still one way (down to GSM only) but I am thinking that is a Cingular issue not a TYTN issue.
Will report any differences I find but so far nothing beyond similar results to 1.34 to report.

Here is my steps that I have successfully upgrade my radio.
Note: Off your antivirus software and make your screen saver is off. While flashing do not doing anything to your PC. You may like to move your mouse to prevent any screen saver or power management activities.
1. If you have not flash Hard-SPL v1.10.Oli, unzip the file. Make your phone is activesync (connected) to your PC. Run ROMUpgradeUt.exe. Follow the instruction and your upgrade should complete in less than a minute. After this soft reset your phone and your PC and make sure that your phone is activesync (connected) to your PC.
2. Make sure that your phone is activesync (connected) to your PC. Unzip HERM_RADIO_1.38.00.10_Only_SSPL. Run ROMUpgradeUt.exe. Follow the instruction. You should see a white screen that shows the percentage of progress of the flashing. On the PC screen you will also a dialog box showing the percentage of progress of the flashing. Be patient, the whole process takes about 20 to 25 minutes. After flashing do a soft-reset.

Okay after the first day using this radio I can say my battery life has improved greatly. I had 1.34 before and from 6am to 7pm it would easily be down to 20% with the alarm going off and all I have is push email and maybe a few calls a day and maybe visit 5 web pages.
After 16hrs its at 50%
Signal seems to be a bit better and haven't had any dropped calls. I know its only 1 day but my battery has never lasted this long for me and my use is pretty consistent daily..

Anybody in UK on T-Mobile having problems with this Radio version?
For some reason I can send/recieve SMS without a hitch but, making and recieving calls isn't working.
If I call my Vario II from a landline, the handset will ring but when I answer the call it just goes dead.
Anyone have an ideas?
Actually, I flashed it yesterday morning and then went to pick up my girlfriend. I made a call, got through and spoke to her without a problem using the new radio ROM.
Could the problems I'm having be network related? If that was the case, wouldn't SMS be broke too?
UPDATE: Right, I've just forced my phone's network type to GSM (was Auto) and the GSM/UMTS Band to GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100) (again, was on Auto before) and it now seems to be working ok. Signal strength is being reported at 2 bars under GSM. With 3G, it was reported at full strength. I'm now thinking that the 3G signal was reported incorrectly and is even weaker than the GSM, hence the call problems. Maybe 3G is having problems automatically switching and falling back to GSM when the signal is weak?

T-Mobile UK this wk do seem to be having issues, the other nite the GPRS/MMS servers failed (again).
I had a missed call this morning and got the missed call text after 10am so I think it might be network, if you are having a problem downgrade to 1.27.00.00, dont seem to be any issues with that one.
EDIT : There 3G network sucks on the best of days.

For me, I'd say battery life-wise, 1.38 + WM6 Black == 1.20 + 1.35 South Africa. Of course, it would have been better just to upgrade the radio and compare only that difference, but I was itching to get WM6 ;)

I was having the WM6 freezing when in standby mode "wont wake up" problem, but since Radio 1.38 I have not had this problem. Anyone else experience this as a "fix" I dont want to start a rumor that this radio fixed the problem. I was wondering if anyone else is still having that issue after the new radio. Other than this the 1.38 radio shows the same as 1.34 in daily use to me.

Yup. I was using that fix before I did the new radio update. That was different symptoms. Before it would work if I ejected the card and reinstalled it or if I soft reset the phone, but not now. Not since the radio upgrade. Soft reset, battery removal, sim card, sd card removal have no effect and nothing has worked.

Well, when I got home I checked out the SD card in my computer. The card was read fine, but some directories and files were missing (mostly my CABs!!!). Then I tried to copy the remainder of the info from the card, but many of the files were corrupt. The phone still refused to see the card, so I formated it with my Cannon camera, and now my phone sees a perfectly empty card. yeah :(
SO... IF your going to do any upgrading I would recommend removing your storage card FIRST.

I was using the 1.18 ROM (old, I know!) that came with the SA 1.35 ROM beforehand without a single problem.
Will try the 1.34 Radio now as I'm still having problems with 1.38. Its been really hit and miss whether it works. Was out in town yesterday and my girlfriend got a full 3G signal on her Nokia 6233 and my Vario II was showing no network coverage.

I have not had any SD card issues. I am using the Regular Sandisk 2gb card.
the only thing I notice is if I power off the phone, and power back on the radio cell transmitter does not turn back on, I have to go to the comm manager and re-select it back on.
Other wise all seems well so far.

I have been running the 1.38 radio upgrade for 3 days now on WM6 with no problems, the battery life in my case is ok, if not better than the previous radio 1.35 I had installed. I have also found the signal strength is much improved by about 20% with both the phone and the gprs.
Regarding the Sandisk MicroSD card problems, I have had none at all and I run a 2gb card and a 1gb card

Want to now try the 1.27 Radio SSPL package but the Rapidshare link is stating this:

Is there anyone with this willing to send me the file? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Looks like it depends on different networks...but the Wi-Fi as I know has nothing to do with the Radio ROM...I will try the 1.38 for a couple of days if this still persist will go back to 1.27 which was far the best radio ROM I`ve tried...

I even tried running the hard-spl but same result.

I have installed the LSVW WM5 ROM image which has GPS enabled in it and also have the bass boost drivers installed.

I have much better reception after I installed this radio ROM and I notice an improvement in the battery life also. I live outside the city so I can not access EDGE where I live and unfortunately we have no 3G yet. But last evening I tested RADIO 1.34 and was able to drive pretty far outside the city before being cut off the EDGE network. Today I did the same with this radio and was able to drive over 2 kilometers further then yesterday.
What a difference in reception. Is it really possible that the difference can be that much.

3. Run the ROM update utility on the PC (go thru the check boxes and click UPDATE)
4. SSPL tricolor screen shows up on the phone and is immediately disconnected from the PC (Activesync connection lost).
5. ROM update utility reports error that it cannot connect to the phone and so cannot continue.

Also i kept getting disconnected and in Chicago had a hard time getting a signal. I think this is only for the people on WM6, or maybe on Cingular... The best battery life and reception for me so far is on 1.35 so im back on 1.35 now and i love it..

Yes, and no. The radio that ends in .n1 is with GPS. If it ends in .n0, does not. This thread is for 1.38.00.10 which has no GPS support.

Have applied this 1.38 radio rom today and noticed that the HSDPA / GPRS latency seems to have improved. In the IE browser pages are loading faster, and an AvantGo sync takes less time with the new radio.
On the other hand the download speed seems to have slightly gone done, maybe by 5 - 10% compared to the 1.27 radio.
Using https://text.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 the latency is < 1 sec (used to be 1 - 2 sec in 1.27) and the bandwidth is around 750 - 800 kbps (used to be 800 - 850 kbps in 1.27).
Personally I favour 1.38 since the lower latency is more condusive to internet browsing and downloading reasonably small sized data volumes.
Will watch battery consumption next ... too early to tell.

19th March 2007, 05:06 PM
But of course, Sir.
This is exactly my point. Since it is a .n0 radio it will effectively render the GPS unusable, by not offering support for it.
Why don't they just switch threads, to the .n1 one?
Although, I suppose, flashing a trinity with a .n0 radio and then trying to have a working GPS could, in some unpredictable ways, help that other project, porting the GPS capabilities to Hermes. Now that would be fun to try ;)

I too had problems with 1.34 after going back to it from 1.38 - I ended up hard resetting the phone and 1.34 is now OK.
I've got some major problems then because even after a hard reset I'm still having these issues.:(
If I dial the handset from a landline I get a pause, then the mobile starts ringing but all I can hear from the landline is a series of beeps. Making calls from the mobile is a non starter.
But if I force the frequency band to GSM, it works perfectly without any issues.

I just checked and re-flashed 1.38 to see if I had the same problems. Sure enough, calls redirected to voicemail straight away and calls from the mobile not able to connect.
Going back to 1.34 again.
It's strange that you're getting issues after hard resetting.
I have heard that the 3G side of things can cause problems with calls. There's obviously an issue with this in the UK.
gurubumsmack
19th March 2007, 05:41 PM
Its really strange because the 3G signal strength is being show as a full 5 bars, but when I force GSM signal strength drops to around 2 bars.
I recall having the same problems with Orange 3G and the Nokia 6630 ages ago. I switched to GSM and left it there. A few weeks later, I switched back to 3G and lo and behold everything was fine.
I have a feeling its something to do with the fall back to GSM if the 3G signal is too weak. But would this be an handset issue or a network issue?

Am using 1.38.00.11 (for Trinity) but reported my problem on this thread instead by mistake ....
I did download the latest Activesync 4.5
Advanced networking is unchecked in Activesync in my trinity
I connect my phone to the PC and i do have an activesync connection
Am using Windows XP SP2
My main problem
I run Romupdateutility.exe, click all checkboxes, and click on UPDATE... After about 3 secs, i see the Tricolor screen on my Trinity and i lose the connection to the PC ... My problem is not with the version of the ROM am running .... It is this problem of losing connectivity with the PC as soon as the tricolor screen comes up.
Before LVSW WM5 ROM upgrade ....
Before i upgraded my phone to LVSW's WM5 ROM with GPS, the connection to the PC would not show up a dialog box on my phone. I would just see a status indication. The Romupdateutility.exe went smooth and as expected for the WM5 ROM upgrade ...
After i upgraded to the WM5 ROM, whenever i connect the phone to the PC, i see a small dialog box on the phone that shows the USB connection status and then goes hidden when its connected. And with this "new" USB connection is where i see the problems. As soon as the phone goes into tricolor screen, PC loses connection with the phone (as though USB cable was plugged out).
So again, ..... Am i missing something in the new ROM ?

It's got to be a combination of the network and hardware talking to each other when this rom is installed.
I've just gone back to 1.34 and it's ok again. Calls coming in no problem.
When I updated I did notice that it was having problems retrieving network settings (I was looking at call fordwarding etc to see if I could work out why stuff was going straight to voicemail).

The plot really thickens now!
Went to work (5 minutes down the road) tonight and had zero problems! Was able to make calls and my data connection was working perfectly.
Walking home chatting to my girlfriend up to my front door and again, no problems.
Just been sitting in my room awaiting a call from her but this time the problem returns. Phone rings but when I go to answer theres nothing there. She later told me that she heard the beeping sound.
What are the chances of something in my home causing interference? I have a wireless access point but surely this can't be causing the problem?

Experience with new Radio ROM so far:
- Left for work this morning around half past nine. Battery was on 70%.
- Only called a few times, no data transmission
- Left for fitness this afternoon around six. Battery was still on 70%
- Turned on Live Messenger, connected using UMTS.
- Left for home after fitness around half past seven. Battery was around 40%
- Got back home around half past eight, made few more calls and messenger was still on. Battery was around 30%
So far I'm pretty impressed with this new Radio rom. But need to test it some more.

@gurubumsmack
Just occured to me last night that this is most likely an aggressive form of the "dropped calls" bug that we see on some radios where calls drop when the phone is trying to fall back to GSM in weak 3G areas. If the 3G is particularly weak in your house at the moment (maybe there's a local transmitter issue) then this may be how it's manifesting itself.
Must admit, I've been noticing a few issues here at work (I'm on the 24th floor of a notoriously bad building for reception) but as soon as I get outside things are okay.
I'd definitely have a word with TM to see if there are any local issues.

Seems to be ok at my home today! Am able to make and recieve calls on 3G.
Think it must have been a local transmitter issue.
Used this site: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk and discovered my house is pretty much slap bang in between 2 UMTS transmitters.
Will be keeping an key on this and if it happens again, I'll be straight on the phone to T-Mobile.
Radio ROM seems good though. Data connections are established a bit quicker for me and battery life has improved.

duh, one has GPS enabled and the other doesn't? Please read the wiki and the appropriate threads, then if it still doesn't make sense, ask again with some content indicating you've at least TRIED. i.e. EXPLAIN to us what you think you understand, and we'll fill in the gaps.

GPS enable
makes u able to use a virtual port for some other tools which are using GPS-Data......i.e. Tom Tom and some other stuff in the backround
GPS disable
u are only able to use just this one port for your gps-mouse or hardware
is that correct?

No.
There is no way you've read anything about the GPS radio's in the time it took you to reply to my post.
Seriously, do us all a favor and don't play with your phone.. I predict that if/when you try to flash the radio, you will brick your phone anyways. So, given that, it doesn't really matter WHICH rom you use. Flip a coin.

I'm guessing you're asking because of the difference between radio rom 1.38.00.10 (gps disabled) and 1.38.00.11 (gps enabled).
I haven't read too much on the gps threads because I'm not interested in it, but my understanding is:
Hermes phones are theoretically capable of running as gps devices without an external receiver. However the internal antenna isn't good enough to receive the satellite transmissions. The hardware could be modified to improve the antenna but the cost and complexity (and guaranteed voided warranty) make this impractical - therefore xda gurus have stopped developing this.
GPS enabled allows that part of the hardware to receive satellite transmissions (but no good bacause of weak antenna).
GPS disabled does not allow the hardware to receive satellite transmissions.
I use the 1.38.00.10 rom because I don't see the point in enabling hardware which won't work anyway.
I'm probably way off the mark with this - but if you're really interested this try reading these threads http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=295751.
Also, as LegolasTheElf says - do some reading before flashing your phone - it'll save bricking it and also loads of $$$$

Hi guys,
I am a relatively newbie to this forum and upgrading and have been reading for the last two days on the wonderful news about the Hermes upgrades.
I am currently running LSVW's WM6 'ProStyle' OS Only ROM and wish to upgrade my radio to 1.38. I understand that I must first run the HardSPL and then flash to the desired radio ROM with the RUU Upgrade .exe.
I am just confirming that flashing HardSPL lets me flash to any radio version in the event that 1.38 might not work as well as planned?
EDIT: I ran HardSPL and now have SPL-1.10.Oli and thus I can now run the rtask command. I still however can't work out how to find the actual radio version I am using. 'rversion' gives me 0107 which is the radio bootloader version but how to retrieve the radio version, ie 1.34? Also, if I upgrade to 1.38 using the 'Radio upgrade only using SSPL' ROM, will that leave my radio bootloader as 0107?
Just double checking in case I make an irreversible mistake!

I Used the 2.05.263.1 with 1.38.00.10 for a couple of days i talked for maybe 3 H (with BT headset) and was running tomtom most of the time.
BT turned of by itself and calls dropped a couple of times
With the new wwe version with 2.11.225 i havent had a dropped call (35 Calls 88 mins)
Took the same trip but in opposit direction and just got home, dident talk as much but some and tomtom worked all way with BT GPS.
Seems to me that it's more to radio then the radio rom, but could have been pure luck :D

If you are using the MEdia Net cabs, turn that off and use My ISP without the proxy. Once I did that, 1.38 stopped dropping calls and the ability to download, surf and talk at the same time became a smooth reality.

How did you set up your connection to Cingular? Did you run a cab or did you go in and enter the information directly? Either way, if you set up a proxy, you will have to disable it.

I seem to keep getting my data connection disconnecting with this Radio ... don't know yet if it is the radio or the ROM (since I upgraded both at the same time) but I have been noticing on other threads that many folks running this radio are noticing that their data mysteriously stops connecting (while the phone and other functionality is fine). For me I notice it with Goodlink ... which just stops connecting after awhile (and then if I try out PIE, I find I cannot connect). Only a soft reset cures me (for a bit).
Others have data connection issues with this radio? I upgraded from the 1.33 that came with the "new" Cingular 2.06 ROM, and am considering a downgrade back (since that one seemed to work fine)

In my case the entire radio was hung and the only choice was to soft reset. Very annoying. My current combo runs great, however, so apparently it wasn't just the radio.

That sounds like exactly the problem I've been having with my 8525 as described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297002
I've been trying to use it with push email but the data connection will just hang after some seemingly random amount of time has passed. When the connection is hung, the phone still indicates that it is connected to GPRS but if you try to use any Internet app (like PIE, for instance) the connection will just time out.
One time I did have to soft reset to get things working again but typically all I have to do is hold down the End key until GPRS disconnects. Then the connection will be reestablished the next time data is needed.
So you're saying this is a known problem? Except for being unlocked, my phone is stock AFAIK. I started looking into upgrading the radio and OS because I bought this device (actually two of them) expressly because it's supposed to support push email (and I need it to run some critical apps I need for work).
This is the first I've heard someone else (after checking several boards) complain about this exact problem: Cingular 8525, data hang.
How are things working with 1.38 then?

The 1.18.00.10 is just the version programmed into the RUU updater. It doesnt read from the Radio. It can be changed by whoever built the Updater using ROM KOCH, etc..
It worked fine for me.

The "from" is being read from your device and the "to" is whatever the RUU was programmed to read (usually matches the ROM in some way, but not always). Ignore it.

Are you using a registery hack to keep your data connection alive all the time?
In desperation I did add HTweakC and enabled that feature. But it hasn't helped at all. Before that I tried two things: 1) installed GPRS Keep Alive which pings up to 5 hosts in an effort to keep the connection up based on traffic; 2) started pinging the device from a remote server. Neither of these setups helped, but they did an excellent job of draining the battery pretty darn quickly!
I uninstalled the keep alive utility, stopped pinging the device itself, and turned off the registry tweak (through HTweakC). None of these actually help so why bother?
Next I disabled push and set my push email client to just poll for mail every 30 mins instead. I wanted to make sure it wasn't push that was causing the problem itself. But the connection still hangs after a while.
I tried switching from Cingular's internet APN back to isp.cingular to see if it was a capacity problem or some other issue with one APN over another. But still no dice. Same problem.
Shouldn't the device just cleanly disconnect if it 1) loses signal, or 2) can't renew its IP?

Hrmmm. I'm running ROM 1.34.502.1 and Radio 1.16.00.00.Well, I should amend what I said about my original 1.34/1.16 combo to say that although push mail worked fine and the GPRS didn't hang, I had a lot of trouble with the browser. Specifically, provided I kept moving it was fine, but as soon as I paused for even a few seconds I'd start getting timeouts. The connection seemed to be up, but not fully functional. I messed around with proxy vs. no proxy -- all that, but to no avail.
That's when I found this forum and started messing around with flashing the newer WM5-based OS and radios. At this point I don't recall which I flashed first, but I'm thinking OS because that's when things advanced to where it would run for anywhere from 12-24 hours, then hang trying to re-connect the data (every morning I'd wake up to the animated arrows). From there I flashed the latest radio (1.35 at the time), then backed off one version at a time down to 1.27, none of which worked.
Silly as it sounds, it's almost as if something finally "clicked" once I flashed the WM6-based ROM and 1.38 (which was a bit of a desperation move at that point). Now I'm afraid to change anything and knock wood regularly, although I have flashed Hard-SPL twice since I have radio BL 108.
Add to the above the fact my sister just got an 8525 this week and she reports that the stock stuff (1.34/1.16) has been working great (thus far). She and I live in the same town, even.
That's my experience, FWIW. I don't know if my radio was a bit flakey at first, or what.

I monitored the Hermes Forums for weeks before I felt comfortable enough to flash my new 8525. The ROMS were originally 1,34/1.16. It was working fine with this combination but I wanted to be in a position to take advantage of the great work done by dedicated contributors to these forums.
Well, I took the leap last night and performed a Hard-SPL, then upgraded the radio ROM to 1.38. I followed the instructions in these forums and this thread and everything went flawlessly. One day later and no dropped calls, the battery drains more slowly and signal strength is improved.
Thanks to everyone for their excellent work. My only problem was downloading the 1.38 file from the FTP site. Using CuteFTP (a recommendation found in one of the instructions) I was finally able to download.

You could be in the same town and still experience vastly different reception. Unless your town is so tiny that you only have one tower and all houses are on the same street. You know what I mean?
What I'm wondering is how GPRS (or UMTS for that matter) is affected by a degrading signal, loss of signal, or maybe even a suspension of service--doesn't GPRS just claim unused voice capacity from the tower?
For the most part my phone is sitting on my desk (home office) and signal strength somehow will vary from 5 bars to 1 or 2. So I'm wondering if that is part of my problem.

Considering we live less than 10 miles apart, I think it's safe to say "in general" we're using the same stuff.

Well, yeah, obviously... I'm just saying it's not like we live across the country from one another where the networks could be provisioned completely different. Considering we live less than 10 miles apart, I think it's safe to say "in general" we're using the same stuff.
It must be pretty flat where you live then. Around here the topology is so hilly (and mountainous in places) so that you can gain or lose a signal just driving 1/2 a mile. We also have dense foliage which is often wet...pacific northwest don't ya know. So signal strength within a 10 mile radius here really fluctuates.
On another note...doesn't Cingular use GPS for E911 emergency location services?

I thought they used cell trianglulation but I could be mistaken

I had to look into this and it appears you are correct. TMobile and Cingular (ATT) use triangulation in the U.S.; the other carriers use GPS.
Perhaps the GPS capability in the Hermes is for those regions in the world that use A-GPS to deliver location-based services including E911.
So that begs the question: for anyone that travels internationally, would it be better to flash the .n1 radio instead?

I've noticed that when the connect drops after signal loss (in basement of office building) for more than a few minutes, I can't reconnect without a soft reset (conn manager, settings etc). I says in can't dial isp.cingular or wap.cingular

I was coming here to post similar problem. I have been trying to narrow down the won't wake from sleep problem. I have this in LVSW and WMXL so prob not the OS. Also today I disabled sleep/standby and found the radio freezes at random. At first I had the can't dial modem so I tried the regular phone call. Same prob and needed to SR. I thnki it may be radio causing the won't wake from sleep too. I am going to try to reflash the radio still to 138 though and see if it is better.

??? Those are the same OS (WM6) just different distributions. Before you blame the radio or the OS you should know I've had hanging data connection problems since day 1 using radio 1.16 and WM5 (the stock Cingular 8525 setup). Maybe its a combination of the phone hardware itself, the OS, and the network.
This is why people will spend crazy $$$ on an iPhone...in the end it may be the only platform that actually works reliably with data.
I think vp3G mentioned he's using 1.38 with LSVW Pro and it everything's groovy with that combo.

I am not blaming the OS or the ROM cookers. I think it is the radio which is HTC. I could go back to 1.27 but 1.38 has better battery and 3G handling overall so I will stay with 1.38.

Are you connected to GPRS or UMTS when this happens? It's been a couple of years since I moved from DC to the other Washington, but IIRC neither Cingular or T-Mobile had stellar coverage of that area.

I don't know if it took a few flashes to finally lay down a good radio image on this thing, or what, but I struggled for the first few weeks. Even 1.38 didn't work worth a crap with the AKU 3.3 ROMs. It may have been the Trinity/GPS version the first time around, though.

loaded WMVI Black edition 1.2. After loading rom managed to unlock ext rom
using HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3 but this downgrades radio rom to a much older one. When I upgrade to 1.38.30.10 ext rom becomes lock again but still visible.

Hard-SPL (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722) negates the need to "unlock" the CID (which is stored in the radio) and makes your device always appear as "SuperCID" without changing the actual CID (thereby allowing you to revert to a factory ROM for warranty, etc.).
From there, the preferred tool for mounting the ExtROM for writing on WM6 can be found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297085).
As always, I advise reading the threads in their entirety first and understanding them before proceeding. :)

Newbie chiming in here....
I upgraded my Cingular 8525 last week from the default installed 1.16 to 1.38.0.10.
In general my reception seems to have improved at least in one troublesome spot that used to drop calls regularly, but I also seem to have more dropped calls, very early in the call (within the 1st minute or less).
Last night I called my home answering machine 6 times... each time I heard one ring then the bonk bonk bonk sound, "call ended". In exasperation I hit soft reset and the next call went thru fine. The phone said it had 2,3, even 5 bars during this time.
I am only using the phone for calls, ie. no data connection.
In general an improvement in many ways over 1.16, but still not perfect. Mostly chiming in to add another data point for those with problems. Ideas for fixing this welcome tho... tho yes, you may need to use small words when you make any suggestion (I'm still learning... over a month spent lurking and reading the Wiki)

Like you, I upgraded to this radio rom over a week ago. Reception has improved and not a single dropped call, even in areas with only a single bar.

I had upgraded to the 1.38.00.11 radio and I experienced problems so I went back to what I thought I had zero problems with - 1.27.00.00 and everything was back to normal.
Reading about the GPS enabled Trinity version of this radio, I noticed there being some issues on the hermes - which was most likely my case. I will try out the 1.38.00.10 version and see what happens.

Heh. That wouldn't happen anyway. When I heard the specs on the iPhone (after the keynote) I went out and bought the 8525. I want to be able to choose what I run on the phone; I don't need Apple or anyone else to determine that for me. Ya know what I mean?
Still running fine with this radio. I'm in San Francisco right now and the signal is nice and consistent in comparison with my meager to crappy signal in West Puget Sound (across from Seattle). It's so nice to be somewhere that you can get a solid cell signal. :D

I installed both WM VI Black Ed. ROM v2.0 & Radio 1.38.00.10 on my Cingular 8525 after reading for over an hour to make sure I understood everything first.
I do not think this OS is any faster, but the radio is working much better ... tested it with a high bitrate webcast while moving thru out Philadelphia ... including the subway system with not one single skip in the audio... all the while surfing the net.
With the old radio I couldn't even get low bitrate webcasts to play without skipping with all the bars on my phone (and not surfing) and sitting still. The newer OS might have something to do with this too..
To everyone that worked on this, and the users that answered other users postings/questions (that I read every last one), just wanted to say THANK YOU! I like my 8525 even more.
..and Spb Mobile Shell 1.0 works fine with this os & radio upgrades.

Hi,
I am using cingular 8525 (HTC 8525) and having trouble with a lot of drop calls regularly, very early in the call (within the 1st minute or less).
I am only using the phone for calls, ie. no data connection.
Is there a way of improving the signal strength?
What is this upgrade to 1.38? how does one do it?
Thanks,
- Amber
