All,

Just a quick note ... thought you'd be interested.

I contacted Dopod here in Australia, trying to find out when the official Australian D810 (with GPS) ROM would be available. I have also been requesting any details of whether or not Dopod would release WM6 for the D810.

The response on my query for the GPS ROM resulted in the following:

It looks like it is 4 weeks away.

We will also bring WM6 with GPS in another 2-3 months time for the D810.

How's that for good news!!

Importer for Spain and Portugal convinced HTC will officialy release WM6 for Trinity in few months. No data on timespan known at the moment. Same source says immediate release of WM5 GPS enabled ROM (next week).
This was already said. Hope true.

What did I say in the donation thread? If we pay a bunch of money (and I did, don't get me wrong), an official release will happen.

You know if we hadn't, they wouldn't have bothered... :$

Hope its true!

But in Portugal the importer its NovaBase, and when the dopod gps version cames out, i've contacted NovaBase to know if HTC was going to release a gps rom, and the tell that it would be released during the February month!....

So, las week i've mailed them again and said that February has passed, and no rom released.... than I ask if they have a prevision to release that and ask too if they will release this quipment with wm6..... they answerd that gps will be released but no time prevision and tell that dont have plans to release wm6!

It is not worry, if dopod releases it! I am using the gps rom for dopod d810 in my p3600 and it is great!

Attachment:

Exmo. Sr. Não temos uma data certa para existir a actualização de ROM. Deverá consultar o site da HTC Europa (www.europe.htc.com). Não existem planos para haver um upgrade de sistema operativo Windows Mobile 6. Cumprimentos, Equipa do Mobility Support

(7- march-2007)

Hope dopod releases it! (as soooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn as possible!) ;)

To put further context around the information I received:

The reply was from Dopod Support
I have been communicating with Dopod Support on a range of queries. In Australia, they were going to release an RSS Reader (which they haven't yet, but I was lucky enough to get a Test Version - it is just rebranding an existing RSS Reader available), and while I was asking I queried about:

GPS Australian ROM
Official RSS Reader Release
Availaibility of the Blackberry Client in Australia (which they have made available in other markets)
Whether or not WM6 would be made available, even for a small fee

I have now got confirmation from Dopod that the official Australian GPS ROM will be available in around 4 weeks
No confirmation as to the final release of the RSS Reader
No confirmation when the Blackberry Client will be available in the Australian market
Confirmation that Dopod will release WM6 for the D810 (Trinity) in 2 to 3 months

From my discussions with Dopod, it appeared that with there discussions with M$, M$ was apparently going to offer an upgrade installer for WM5 devices. My guess is that they have not provided it as Dopod wanted to provide WM6 via this channel, but as it is no longer happening I see this as the catalyst for providing it.

Take from this what you will, but I am very excited about this news from Dopod.

Man thank you for this news, it seems that P3600 will be in my posession more than I previously thought :) an year for sure ;) but as you may see there was MANY speculations about release versions of GPS and WM6 ROM's and none of them happens to be true, at least not for HTC branded devices and it is 6 (six!) months since original HTC ROM present in my P3600 :(

BTW, I see you have some F1 action in couple of hours in your town, man I would give my Trinity to be there now :)

That's wonderful news assuming it's true.

However, I guess I'm going to be switching to the upcoming E-Ten X800 (http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/15/e-tens-glofiish-x800-everything-but-the-qwerty/) since it comes with WM6, VGA and (presumably a better than Qualcomm) GPS unit at launch.

Pity the X800 does not appear to have WCDMA850, only WCDMA2100. 850MHz is the frequency of the Australian Telstra "Next G" network. The D810 has this band which makes it ideal for Oz. I used the HSDPA facility to check the weather while attending the F1 race. Like the cars, HSDPA is very fast!

I read some news (I don't remember the web site) that explained that the x800 indeed has all three UMTS/WCDMA bands (800/850,1900,2100) but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I hope it has the 850MHz band also.

Hi Graham,

Yes we are planning to release WM6 ROM code upgrade in about 2 months time. This will be a GPS enabled ROM code as well for the D810.

Thanks.

Hi,
I read somewhere that there will be a new ROM released for the D810 which
will have both GPS and Windows Mobile 6 on it. I was wondering if this was
correct and whether you any idea of when this will be released?

Thanks

Well, that's also a good auto-response looking answer... don't give much credit to that as I guess they would send the same if I would ask for a red colored dopod LE to be realeased...XD

even if trinity isn't included in this list, i don't think they will not upgrade it too. It doesn't make any sense to upgrade 3300 and tytn and NOT the 3600... sounds like a punishment or something  anyway that list is by qtek which is quite marginal compared to official HTC support or even Dopod. this is non-sense. the eten x800 does not have a keyboard either and it has wm6. so also devices without a keyboard can handle wm6.

This is not entirely true. It's true that Q-Tek sweden has published a list of HTC devices that will get a free upgrade to WM6, but when you send a message to HTC via www.smartmobility.nl (the dutch HTC site), they say the following:

"Thank you for contacting HTC Europe regarding a query about Windows Mobile 6.

We are currently awaiting an official response from our Head Office on the matter of ROM updates from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6. We hope to have an answer for you soon."

When I asked for a specified list of HTC devices that will get a upgrade they say the following:

"There is no list avaible of models that will get Windows Mobile 6 and models that won't get it."

Q-Tek Sweden is pretty fast with publishing a list of devices that will get WM6, it's very odd, because the rest of Europe (i'm sorry, the rest of planet earth :D) has no idea wich device will get it and wich won't. So I think it's a mater of time, or a rom-update to Dopop :D.

I think you can count on it that the HTC P3600 also gets a Windows mobile 6 upgrade. Orrrr.....we have complained a bit to much about the GPS antena :p and this is our punishment.

I think there will be no htc upgrade for trinity till june..
Potentially will come later some time. What a shame,
a 3G phone with GPS and no WM6, no outlook with html support !!!
For new buyers this is no good news. Who wants to pay this,
without the secure feeling he ll get soon WM6.

I think all hopes for an official upgrade are left now on DOPOD.
It would be good to see dopod customers of the thread to keep
on mailing. You better flood there mailboxes...

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6269.html

We have chosen devices with a particular focus on “messaging”, where users will enjoy the greatest benefits of Windows Mobile 6 (the HTC Advantage, the HTC TyTN, the HTC S620, and the HTC P4350). The upgrade will also be available for the award-winning HTC P3300.

- Will other devices be added?

Potentially. We’re in constant discussions with our operator partners, and if they’re seeing significant demand from their customers for a specific device then we will always consider it.

Now I have had several plumbers quote me two weeks in the past - so that means it may be here by Christmas...

Please note – this ROM code has been released in other countries because their testing and approval criteria are not as strict when compared to Australia.
.......

Who can find these test ROM's? There are some chefs here which can make them ready for us ..... I would like to test too, because my criteria are even more strict than in Australia :)

It says WM6 is avaliable in dopod.hk in July. The rest is about some promotion for D810 bought between those times (and specific shops doing the promotion)
