CorePlayer and TCPMP does not support DirectDraw RGB mode and ATI ImageOn Video Accleration, after turn on the this option the screen can not display correctly, it seem have typhoon run on the screen.
Only DirectDraw YV12 YUY2 mode and Raw FrameBuffer can rendering correctly, but the performance on playing 640x480 DivX video is very terrible. The average speed only got 45%-70%.
I found some information in corecode forum TYTN and Hermes seem fixed some bug. but that method can not apply on Athena.

What setting are others using. I've tried running a 600x320 movie with Core player 0.81. It was very slow and stuttery.

Using TCPMP, latest version. video playback is unwatchable, audio is fine but video is jerky, 1 frame per second or worse.
Wu5262, can you post the settings you are using please.

Video quality set to highest
video driver set to Raw FrameBuffer
Audio set to Stereo
Audio Drive use Wave output
Sound and movie play very very well, no delay at all. Let me know if you have different result.

Also guys & gals..tick the box for Micro drive in the settings dialogue...it helps. Has anybody managed to get DVD quality yet? If so, please give more info like encoded resolution, bit rate and codec used and application used for encoding.
Most of my old movies were encoded to 320x240 @ 600kbps and looked like DVD quality on my QVGA Hermes, but those same movies play very well on the Ameo, buy are stretched to smitherines and don't look good at all.
I've now tried using DVD-Ripped files (same encoding process as torrents) and these look absolutely beautiful, but are wide screen format so don't fill the entire screen. It benchtested at around 118% on Coreplayer and looks slightly better than on TCPMP which strangely benches at a slightly better 120%.
Another few suggestions:
In Coreplayer preferences:
Untick 'Slow video memory' & Tick 'Override AVI timing based on audio'.
Under Video I have selected:
Video: Rawframebuffer mode
Video Quality: High
Smooth Zoom: On
Don't Tick 'Dither' as it seems to cause the movie to look worse.
Good luck.

Here is my setting in CorePlayer 1.04 Build 716
1000Kbps 640 x 480 DivX Movie. Speed is reasonable.
~~DirectDraw Page~~
Overlay format: YV12 **** Remember must set this option first******
~~Video Page~~
Video output: ATI IMAGEON
Video Quality: High
Smooth Zoom: On
Dither: OFF
Accleration: OFF
P.S. We can't get the full performance on No DirectDraw overlay in RGB and ATI ImageOn with accleration,
But there have BUG in ATI ImageOn decoder in CorePlayer because ATI did not disclose the ImageOn structure.

Thanks for that Simdao...those settings you got do actually produce much better performance results. No lost frames now and benchtest has risen from 118% to 145% on coreplayer!!
Bare in mind people that I'm using proper DVD rips in which the video resolution is and bit rate is considerably higher than for 320x240 mp4s or equvalent Divx files....those files should yield benchtest results og 280% - 300%+.
This is great...only problem with the ATI Imageon software renderer is that you get some 'minor distortion' in interface mode...but perfection in full screen mode. Cheers mate. ;)

Take that back. ATI has screwed up coreplayer today...I can't even get to change the settings as it crashes all the time even with soft-resetting the device!
TCPMP seems more stable in allowing me to change settings back to Rawframebuffer mode. Problems are definitely not resolved with ATI and Coreplayer or TCPMP....here we go again.:(

Is there any real fix to this problem ?
Are you guys able to play DIVX movies with quality ? our any TV SERIES ?
This might be the main reason that i am not going to buy the HTC Athena since there isnt any real and final fix for this problem that comes from the TYTN ..... why cant ATI help with this ? ....

What I'm saying is that Torrent DVD-Rips...search for ''axxo" rips on torrentspy.com (his rips are near on perfect), are absolutely perfect looking on the Athena. Comparable to DVD or even High def quality!!
Benching at 160%+ now too in TCPMP, but Coreplayer 1.04 has no AC3 audio support...hence the switch back to TCPMP 0.72RC....NO Conversion of video file necessary.;)

I was wondering how you were benching quite so high, but you mentioned using Axxo's rips. Iirc, his rips are usually something less than 640x480, especially when converting those really wide aspect ratio movies. Bit rates look to be between 500-600 kbps. I did some spongebob conversions for my kids using SPB DVD Mobile (since nothing else seems to work in Vista), with 640x480, 25 fps, xvid. They benched about 110-120% at best. This was at 100% quality for the conversion, at about 800-900 kbps.
My point , I guess, is that whether using the average torrent rip, or one's own conversion, they play just as they should, as long as the video setting are proper. Out of the box, for me, Coreplayer was not setup right for the Advantage to play xvid's properly.

so, the universal couldn't play some anime without the occasional freeze and catch up,
the athena's movie play back sounds like it's perfect. thats awesome

oh and anime rips are usually at 320 - 240
and 400kbs
i think.
and if it does 640-480
at full speed, then i'm gonna get one of these.. in a year. when i can get it cheap on ebay.
like the universal.
got another one for 400 bones! including shipping!

just a notice here, i didn't bother to encode my movie, i just put it straight to my DOPOD U1000, so it's running the original resolution, each movie is like 800Mb.

yep, that was with one i ripped myself though. delay comes after a few minutes into movie, despite checking the 'sync audio with video' option in DVDx whilst ripping
playing the vid on the PC however, there is no delay...
im using TCPMP, not coreplayer on ameo though

Hi, I'm new to this forum . . .
I hesitate between the htc advantage x7500 and the dell axim x51v that works great with tcpmp . . .
Ok this is not the same product and features at all than the htc . . .
My main concern is to watch the most of my movie files without concersion and especially mkv files : I know almost for sure that the last tcpmp 0.81 works like a charm whith this container . . .
Anybody tested a mkv file with his ou her 'jewel' (I mean htc advantage of course )
Sorry for my syntaxes, I'm a french guy ;-)

Hi again :-)
Could anyone of the forum try to benchmark the htc athena with tcpmp like this ? :
http://www.pdaddict.com/debutant/performance.php
ok sorry the purpose is in french :
download these files : one in 640x480 resolution ici (http://www.demailla.perso.cegetel.net/pdaddict/videotest640480.rar) and the other in 320x240, ici (http://www.demailla.perso.cegetel.net/pdaddict/videotest320240.rar)
make a soft reset (to be be sure to have plenty available memory )
start tcpmp
setup this app qith the following instructions : option/zoom/stretch to the screen
: option/ratio/square
: option/vidéo/soft zoom (always)
: option/Orientation/Left
Ok so let's open file (the both please :-) ) and
click on file/benchmark and wait until tcpmp stop, just do not touch anything on the pdaphone . . .
At the endn Tcpmp would like to know if you want to save the results : say yes or just post the ratio percent for the both film.
So we could compare the htc with the other pda items . . .
Thanks a lot and again if someone could test to open a mkv file with the last 0.81 tcpmp, i would really apreciate that :-)

Well, I made up my mind and ordered a dell axim x51v which is so far the best pda to watch flawlessly any movies and many support, container and codecs . . .
But yours ameo wm6 is great, this is not just the same aim. . .

The encoding of the video source obviously plays an important role in Benchmarking. My results using the same videos are only 2% higher than yours using WM6 and fully loaded with apps inc Spb Shell and WA3!
I've re-encoded High definition films to 640x480 and they bench significantly higher and still look like High def (even better than DVD Rips) with a 900 kbps data rate...same as Axxo's Rips, but even better looking ;).
Let's not forget that there are distinct differences in the graphics chips used between the Dell & the Athena.
IMHO & based on my experiences with this Imageon chip in the Hermes....MP4's are the only vids that the Imageon hardware chip natively accelerates and does so extremely fast.
The chip in the Axim is dedicated to 3D support and movieplayback for various formats and therefore more suited for films etc, but then the imageon chip is responsible for the 3megapixel camera, 2D acceleration (which it does extremely well, I might add) amongst other things like photo viewing etc.
Two very different devices when it comes to the graphics chips.
No doubt about it, the Dell is an excellent device, but all round...the Athena tops it in every other way where it really matters. Just my 2 cents worth.;)
P.S. The Hermes & Imageon bug has been pretty much resolved to the point that the Hermes using the chip is now much faster (I'm told). No such fix has been implemented with the Athena which runs a 624 Mhz chip instead of Samsungs 400 Mhz chip (which is actually very fast:)). Point being...there's more to come out of the Athena yet. just wait patiently for a fix.
helmut_perchu
07-07-2007, 02:58 PM
I totally agree with you :-)
I don't want to dismiss Athena or to point out the drawback of this product . . .
As far as I'm concerned, I want a product, pda or pmp or whatever else that performs flawlessly any type of videos and especially mkv with aac audio support, h or x264 video support, rv9 10 support and so on . . .
That is the reason why I chose the dell axim x51v . . .
But Athena has got a cam, gps, phone ability, wm6 upgrade, hard drive
The video part is not enough good for me and the price is too high considering I do not need to have a phone, but the screen seems to be really nice . . . maybe the next gen with true 800*480 support . . .

WM6 Dopod U1000 ROM 640x480 = 100.08%
WM6 Dopod U1000 ROM 320x240 = 286.24% (hmmm something's a miss here :()
It seems there is a noticeable improvement in performance with this ROM, at least with VGA Videos.
I'll test a bit more when I've got some free time. Also I used Coreplayer v1.1.1, so this could have made the difference too.

My U1000 uses SmartMovie to play movie which sizes 1.17gb without any lag in picture or sound. However, I can not play movie in tcpmp. What is the best setting in tcpmp to play movie?
i have just got my hands on an o2 xda orbit. first off its a great phone as i have my tomtom installed and now dont have to carry a seperate satnav receiver. however, the only problems i have had has been with video playback. i use carrydvd to shrink my movies down, and windows media on the phone but both these has been a bit unstable lately. after various searchs through the forums i downloaded tcpmp and clone dvd mobile. hey presto no more problems. video playback as 10 times better with no jerkness and thats without me changing any settings, and clone dvd mobile shrinks better and faster than carry dvd. i would recomend this to anyone having problems with video playback
