Ordered today on upgrade and it arrives b4 1pm tomorrow.
As the Ameo has in built GPS do I just purchase TomTom 6 and install?
I didnt even know the Ameo had GPS as standard till after I ordered. Bonus, as I dont own a GPS device myself.

I have been told Ameo GPS is disable, and won't be enable in the future as well, can All Ameo user confirm this?

Wait Wait, for those people who say their Ameo has GPS, are you using the UK version? I am only been told the UK version don't have GPS, but Ameo Germany or the rest should be fine. Please comfirm this.

Hi wu. I'm having problems locking onto the satellites that it does pick up, but I've only tried indoors so far, so will go outside in a minute to test it out fully. Using TomTom6. But a reviewer on 4winmobile has bought a UK version too and has reported that TomTom5 works very well on his Ameo on com port 5 using the wired other device setting. Just a quick one...did you download updates via Quick GPS first or after, or not all? and do you activate anything else first or do you load TomTom up straight away? what version are u using?

OK just went outside and within 30 seconds I got a couple of satellites and before the minute was up I had locked into 5 or 6 satellites! It's working beautifully. Just remembered that I always had problems with weak signal where I live until I drive about 3 minutes away and then I get a load more satellites being locked into. So, UK AMEO DEFINATELY HAS GPS activated and works with TomTom 5 and 6. ;)

The QuickGPS application downloads the satelite positions, and helps you speeding up the process of getting the GPS fix. :)

To my knowledge, no one has figured out how to get Google maps to work with GPS on the Athena. We all are using Microsoft Live Search for the PocketPc.

Hi, I have just got a Ameo in the UK but can't get TomTom 5.2 working. Would you mind detailing the settings you used (both in the Windows GPS program and in the TomTom program)?
I also can't get the MS live search GPS to work. Does it work in the UK for you?
Thanks for your help.

My Mistake, TomTom 5.2 on a UK Ameo does work - It just looked like it wasn't because it hadn't found a fix yet. The TT5 error message ("GPS device not found" displayed in the top left corner) is a little misleading!
Once I got into a less built up area, after about 5 minutes, 4 satelites were found (none were found inside my office or in a bus or even in Reading Town Center).
This is good news!!!!!!!!!!!
PS: To help others, I had the Windows GPS settings set to:
* GPS program port: COM5
* GPS hardware port: (None)
* Baud rate: 4800
* Manage GPS automatically: ticked
And the TomTom5.2 GPS configurations set to:
* GPS hardware: "Other NMEA GPS"
* GPS baud rate: 4800
* GPS is connected to: COM5

Not sure how much it matters, but the baud rate is supposed to be 9600.

I have just got a hold of a t-mobile ameo.
I have a program called Quick GPS and i can download sattelite data, but on downloading the data, nothing else happens.
I called T-mobile , and they told me to talk to HTC, i did this and HTC cannot advise on the Ameo.
I pesume i need to now buy tom tom but dont want to unless there i a guarantee it will work.
Can anyone tell me how to get the GPS to work. I would appreciate a step by step instruction if possible.
The response form t-mobile is very poor they just tell you that they dont support Quick GPS.
Thanks,
Dave
before you buy TomTom try google maps for windows mobile first. I don't think most people will want to spend the extra money after tring googles free GPS software. http://www.google.com/gmm/

LOL, well Quick GPS downloads the data, however you need an application (TT, etc...) to see if the GPS works. Fortunately for me the X7500 came with TT on CD and I was able to very GPS works fine. Look around Google to see if there is freeware app that support GPS for you test.

With TomTom, you need to purchase maps. You might want to look into GoogleMaps (fee mobile edition) or TeleNav (monthly fee, 30-day free trial) just to check this out!

How about providing the link to the website and the article you saw. I am sure we all would like to read what they said.

It might be, but the reception stinks.. :-(
This is why I'm using it with external BT GPS receiver.

GPS Reception on The x7500/Ameo/Advantage is super sensitive and in most cases will not require a BT GPS or Ext. Anttena. I've even had mine work Indoors 75ft away from any windows and still had 4 Satt. locks.
Sounds like you haven't setup the GPS correctly. Go into Settings and config
the Com port GPS data is dumped to and the speed, then goto into your GPS
program and setup the GPS to access the same port.
Quick GPS speeds up the GPS aquire time by downloading Satt. location data
but the 1st GPS lock usually takes 2-3 min. Also make sure your in an Open/clear area until you get your lock.

Agreed, it seems to work well for me too.

I have to comment on this actually. Only because it's a bit funny.
Years ago "3" Network offered the Motorola A920 and then it's successor the A1000. Both had a special type of GPS reciever called AGPS ( Assisted GPS )
Which it did by default what people on the Ameo ( yes I just got one and it's brilliant ) do by choice. The quick gps downloads the general satellite data based on location, then allows the GPS to get a lock faster because of it. Yes the A920 works with TomTom , maybe not AS good as windows mobile version but it does eventually get a lock even without the Agps location data.
But look at all the reviews that bad mouthed Agps technology for using precious internet data off the mobile network , and now people are encouraging the use of a derivative Technology. Gotta Love it!!!

On my Ameo GPS works just fine, no settings to do, just hit menu - track my possition (my version is in Danish, so it might be called something else in your language?) - and it starts searching.
Google maps is version 1.7.1.4 - and I use AP Touch 3.0
But as a navigation software it isn't really up to the job, TT6 is so much better in my opinion.

Took me a lot of messing about last night to get this sorted, reading everyone else's replies etc.
I have mine now set as
External GPS
Programs - Com 5
Hardware - Com 4 Baud Rate 9600
Access - Manage GPS Automatically is selected.
In google maps
My Location settings - Set Manually - com5 baud rate 9600
In Live search settings - Com 5
In Copilot Live 6 in GPS Setup - Manual - Com 5 & baud rate 115200, ( It set itself up as this when first selecting )
They all work at these setting I hope it helps others. ( Well it worked on the window ledge whislt plugged into a powered hub )
