Absolutely brilliant news (as far as I'm concerned).

Thanks to fellow member wu5262 for looking after his software so well and keeping it, he e-mailed anyone needing the file in question 'WM5torage'.

This bit of software literally turns the Athena (as well as most other WM5 devices) into a mass storage device allowing one to transfer files directly to your SD card or Micro drive, as it will be recognized as a Drive on your PC.

It simply works wonderfully and completely eliminates the need to use the slow and unreliable ActiveSync application to simply move files from the PC to the device.

I was having problems moving large files in this manner via Activesync (AS) to the Micro Drive (MD) and AS would not cope with it on my Ameo but it works fine on the Dopod U1000, implying that the ROM on the Dopod variant is considerably better put together than others. Wu has had no major problems with his device since he got it.

I can now report that I have no issues with the UK version of the Ameo whatsoever!!

Using WM5torage, one can very easily transfer huge files directly to the MD. I just moved 2.4 GB of movies (3 DVD rips - my own legal copies ;)) in about 12 minutes!!

So no problems with the MD speed in this regard. I've also tested the movies and there is no corruption..everything works flawlessly!

Instructions on how to do it:

1) Download the attached WM5torage.cab...either directly to your device or any other way you want.

2) Install the cab to 'Device' and softe reset straight after.

3) Now to find the file;
Go to...My Device\Program Files\WM5torage.....there it is!

Good time to make a shortcut and place it somewhere more logical!

4) Copy the file from the folder and go to....My Device\Windows\Start Menu\....

Now click the menu button...bottom right corner of the screen...and select 'edit' ...then paste shortcut...rename the file 'WM5torage' (otherwise it will always say "shrtcut to WM5torage") that's it...we're good to go!

5) Finally return to the start menu and you should see it there...WM5torage!!
Connect your USB lead to PC & Ameo/Athena. Don't worry if Active sync says error or even connects...just shut down any pop-up messages or Active sync.

6) On your device under your start menu, Simply click WM5torage (it will say 'Inactive' - hence the reason why nothing happens when you plug your USB lead into the device and PC)...and select Activate.

Immediately your PC should start to recognize your USB mass storage device....be patient and then a window will show up as if you had plugged in a USB device or inserted a memory card into your PC.

You can check what device has now been recognized as a drive under 'My Computer' on your PC.....it'll say something like L:drive or similar depending on your PC's configuration.


Happy fast transferring.:)

Don't forget to 'Deactivate' WM5torage when your finished otherwise Active Sync might not recognize your device the next time you want to sync with your PC.

Glad it's all working out for you....I cannot be bothered to get into another argument with the likes of you.

This post was for those who recognise the problems mentioned above. I have now played with 3 brand new UK version Ameos and all suffer the same problem...so this was a solution for me and those who have the same experience...not twats like you.

you need to enable remote control on your pc, you need the IP as well. i personally have a static IP, so it's quite easy to set up. user name and password is the same on your pc.

I have to say this, if you haven't done remote control before, it might be quite hard to set it up.

I was wondering since you can write a program to convert this Dopod U1000, why not make it more user friendly? Rather than clicking here and there and creating links why not just automate the process. For example my sprite backup software, all I need is to click a button.... no configs needed.

the GPS in my DOPOD U1000 works great! It might take a few minutes to pick up the signal, but once it's there, the signal is very strong, i had full signal almost all the way home just now.

I'm not sure what's gone wrong for some of you, but try uninstalling WM5torage (I know I did), then soft-reset and re-install. Then soft reset again. This time activate it before you hook it up to your PC.....PC should recognise it as a Drive!

Let us know if you have any joy.

P.S. You must deactivate WM5torage after your data transfers...BEFORE you disconnect.

If you don't you may experience some strange behavior and will have to reset.

Wu, I read somewhere on the forum that AS still needs to be installed on the machine in order to pick the device up as a mass storage device. I did have problems using AS, however i found that the device appeared to be conflicting with my USB mem Key, after removal of the usb mem key; and reconnecting via AS, the MD flys, managed to copy over my TT6 with all 1GB maps in no time..

Hi Wu, I've tried a soft reset, it didn't work still 'error 1f' and now I don't have the option to deactivate.....But my device is now not recognised when I connect the usb cable, so activesync can't connect!!

Can you help as I'm a litle bit stuck now.

that is strange, once you soft restart, it should be deactivate, try sync now and if it work. Then activate it and see how it goes

you don't need to soft restart to activate wm5 storage, you can click activate while you sync, it should work

In the past, I had been using softick. But it does not work with WM5 so I happy to have seen this post today. However I was not able to replicate the result.

I've followed everything to the letter up to the step above. In addition, I also closed all application in the memory. (but the phone was still connected) then I came to the part when I click on WM5torage. The screen that comes back shows status of "inactive", but there is also a chckbox to indicate read-only. Do you check that box in your step 6? Because it was not mentioned, I left it alone, and just click activate. However, the PC did not immediately recognise the device as USB masss storage. I saw an error on my device that says "Can't switch to Mass Storage USB driver, error 1f". Then on the Desktop status bar, it says "USB device not recognised".

As far as I can see, up to this step nothing has happened to my MD because my file explorer could still see it. The only thing that seems to have changed is that active sync has not working with my device unless I soft reset. Am I right?

I did the first soft reset, and found that active sync could sync with my device again. I closed down active sync, start WM5torage, I then ticked the read-only checkbox and press activate. Again I saw the same error message.

I did the second soft reset, and as before, active sync could still sunc with my device. This time I left active sync running, start WM5toragte, and pressed activate. Again I saw the same error message.

I continued trying morel combination of method, I'm unable to turn it into a recognised USB device, so I'm very puzzled because so many of you have managed to do it without problem. Any clue on where I have gone wrong?:confused: :confused:

I have been having exactly the same problem experienced by you. Did you eventually solve the puzzle as to what went wrong causing error 1f?

I tried closing all application, including renaming the window startup directory to another name before soft resetting. It did'nt make any difference. Still get error 1f.

My desktop operating system is XP home edition. What's yours? I wonder if this could be a factor. Should it make any difference??

I'm not using any today plugins if I understand "plugins" correctly. I do have some today items which I've since turned off. In addition, I also remove some programs from the startup directory (only the GPRS monitor is significant I think. I left the rest there). I did try renaming the startup directory to some other name to prevent any program loading upon reset also, but that did'nt seem to make any difference either.

Any more idea?

I have installed CardExport on my Dopod U1000 and soon have problem AS won't work anymore. After uninstalling CardEexport I then install WM5torage and everything work like a charm. Good piece of software. Thanks for sharing it with me.

would everyone who has finally used this product successfully please answer the following questions for a start?
1)did you have usb connected already before you start the wm5torage program?
2)if answer to previous question is usb after, then did you connect usb before or after clicking "activate" button?
3)did you check the "display only" tickbox before activating?
4) did the '1f' error message immediately or after you click 'activate'?
5)was there any today pluggin during the process?

I'm using version 1.73 of WM5torage - I have no 'display only' tickbox. I have 'Read-Only' tickbox, it is unchecked.

I get the 1f error message, but if I remove the today screen plugins (under Settings - Today - Items) for SPB Mobile Shell, SPB Pocket Plus, and the T-Mobile@home plugin (which doesn't seem to do anything anyway). WM5torage will then activate correctly.

I am using the Ameo with WM5torage on all three - XP Home & Pro, and Vista Ultimate.
10)did you use the "done" button at any stage ? if yes, when?

Use the 'done' button to deactivate WM5torage, before you unplug the cable. The author recommends this to prevent data loss.

I'm using version 1.73 of WM5torage - I have no 'display only' tickbox. I have 'Read-Only' tickbox, it is unchecked.

I get the 1f error message, but if I remove the today screen plugins (under Settings - Today - Items) for SPB Mobile Shell, SPB Pocket Plus, and the T-Mobile@home plugin (which doesn't seem to do anything anyway). WM5torage will then activate correctly.

I am using the Ameo with WM5torage on all three - XP Home & Pro, and Vista Ultimate.

Use the 'done' button to deactivate WM5torage, before you unplug the cable. The author recommends this to prevent data loss.

Thanks for giving the details. I noted that the version number in my WM5torage version is earlier than yours. I can't remember where mine was downloaded from, but it was only one file when I downloaded.

There is no instruction on this link for installation for ordinary guy like me. I guess they expect everyone to know what to do, but can someone tells me what I'm supposed to do in order to install it? I tried clicking every file on the desktop with no success. I copied it into a folder in my storage card and click it, also with no success.

Perhaps if I can get this version installed all my problem will be solved?

Yes, it is FINALLY working. So, it is all because I was using version 1.20 instead of the latest version of WM5torage!

After installing the two version, I found out v1.73 is much better than the beta one (v1.74). On my Dopod U1000 v1.74 can't even been activated, while v1.73 run smoothly.

I seem to have found the cause of the '1f' error, on my Ameo at least.

I had disabled SPB mobile shell due to the spb menu glitch - no 1f errors.

I re-enabled today after removing spb menu from the mobile shell plugin list and I get constant 1f errors again.

Disable mobile shell today plugins - no 1f errors.

I've tried it a few times and it is definately the cause on my Ameo.

I experienced 1F on my Dopod U1000 using latest firmware.

Here is a freeware program to end various processes. Typically if you end all the processes with ICONS you should be fine - but you should do it from a FRESH restart and load TaskMan FIRST, and then kill processes from there.

Eventually through trial and error you'll find which programs you may have configured to store or access the Storage Device (thus stopping WM5torage from working).

just wanted to say thanks for sharing this application. just got my dopod last friday and installed this app. works like a charm...was able to transfer the music, movies, maps, etc which i have stored in my external hd. quite fast too! i then copied a couple of movies in the free 2gb micro sd card...i used a card reader for that one...and the funny thing is it was slower as compared to transfering files directly to the microdrive using the application.

that is correct, Microdrive has faster reading and writing speed, but it cost more battery to run, so it's up to you where you store your application, personally i will still suggest install them on SD card.

and yes, DOPOD ROM don't seems to have the Microdrive transfer problem, so we don't really need to use tool to transfer files.

Today plugins seem to cause the problem in most cases. Especially SPB Today plugins. Try disabling them and then running it.

As you can see from some of the above posts there have been a few other programs that have also caused WM5torage to halt with a 1f error.

I don't need to untick my today item anymore before the reset. I also don't have to remove certain programs from my startup folder as I used to. Safe Mode resets does that for you automatically.

Once you have finished copying and deactivated the WM5torage, you could do a normal reset, and you're back in business:)

He is saying SOFT reset, not HARD reset...You know, press the reset hole, restarts within 30 seconds all software and apps not changed...Kind of like a re-boot of a PC

Yes we are.:)

OK for me v1.75 works most of the time, but for others...different versions do the same thing. I think the problem lies somewhere in the ROM or in software we install.

Either way WM5torage seems the only viable solution as present and is constantly being updated...implying that there must be issues that need fixing/addressing....like yous and others like mine.

Since switching to WM6 however, I find WM5torage to work more often than not compared to using the same version on WM5. Go figure...lol

Anyway best of luck....it will get sorted in due time.;)

5) Finally return to the start menu and you should see it there...WM5torage!!
Connect your USB lead to PC & Ameo/Athena. Don't worry if Active sync says error or even connects...just shut down any pop-up messages or Active sync.

6) On your device under your start menu, Simply click WM5torage (it will say 'Inactive' - hence the reason why nothing happens when you plug your USB lead into the device and PC)...and select Activate.

So to recapitulate, doing step 6 before step 5 works for me!

yeah, it works for me as well.

the trick is that don't connect usb cable before activation.
if couldn't activate, it means some running program/process is relying on microdrive. after killing all related processes, then it should be able to activate standalone.
after all of these, then it can be plugged into usb port, it is brilliant software! u even can switch yr SD card into external storage as well if u use Sd card with yr athena.

woah another long post mostly 99% garbage. Anyways all laptops come with built in card readers. my laptop has all mini-sd micro-sd sd every card reading capability. And thats much faster than athena's and activesync. lol this is so unneccessary because i never transfer files via USB... slow as hell. Always use internal ^^

In fact I was badly looking for such a tool. After I switched from my E62 to Dopod, I could not access the MicroDrive and SD card directly, (I don't like the control of Active Synch at all). I was wondering why Microsoft is giving option either through ActiveSynch or directly.

Nokia gives this option when connecting through USB (It will ask Direct Data Transfer or Nokia communication Suite and we can select according to our choice).

ActiveSynch is making the users dumb and helpless, (and as one user was telling it can't handle some transfers, and it is not even allowing users to do other way also).
