You want to know how to run Windows Vista on Athena? Well, read on!
Firstly, is not really installing the Vista on Athena, i uses the terminal client services to remote control my desktop.
This is the application i use, it's the TCS in WM6, at least 10x better then the original WM5 one. Simply install it and run it, you will have to have knowledge of remote desktop to set this up. I will not try to cover here because there are some ways. Do a search on the net and you will find lots of into.
Below i attach the WM6 TCS and a screen shot of my Vista Ready Athena!
Haha, you got yourself a UMPC now.

Damn that looks good! Can you actually control and view evrything that happens on your vista through your Dopod? Including High Def Movies? (I know I'm pushing it now :))

It's never gonna work for me...I'm using XP Home Edition. :( Home Edition does not support Remote desktop/TCS, even though the application comes with it.
Confirmed by microsoft. It will work with XP Pro though! :) Might just upgrade it then, but can't remember if that wipes all of my installed apps? Don't fancy re-installing them...way too many.

nah, it doesn't. upgrade leaves everything as it was- even your desktop, settings, etc.

Hi Wu, I tried to use the remote terminal with Universal. It works, however I cannot type neither using the Universal keyboard nor the softkeyboard of the Universal. How do you keyed in text when you are remote accessing your PC?

Hey Wu. Can you or anyone else who has successfully got the WM6 Remote Desktop to work on the Athena please give me some guidance?
1st. Thanks for the link Slave 1.....the web based 'LogMein' works a treat!
Wu..I done a clean install of XP Pro (supports TCS and Remote Desktop) and I installed all necessary components for XP & Remote Desktop. Activated 'Allow users....to Remote Desktop' etc.. My problem is not knowing what to put in the 'Domain' section in the WM6 Remote Desktop application. Is Domain the same as IP? Forgive my ignorance on this...I'm a noob to this.:).
If it's IP info required for this part, which one? I think I have a static IP address, but am not sure. When I check my IP over the web it is different to what shows up for my PC??!!
I'm confused now. This I believe is my only glitch now. Help please. 'LogMeIn.com' works fine, but it's implementation leaves a lot to be desired and all of you guys seem to really like the WM6 style.;)
Pointers please.

you don't really need to type in anything in the domain, you can leave it blank, the most important part is the first one, the computer name, you have to type in the IP address of your computer, or your actual computer name if you are connecting on a local network. check your computer IP, and just put it in there, it should work.

you need to forward the port, if i remember correctly, it's 3389 to your computer IP. Do a search on xda about port forwarding

Can someone help me with the port forwarding? And also how to do remote access through internet? Where do you do the port forwarding setting? Is it at the router? I am using Belkin wireless broadband router. In the Virtual Server setting you can enable an internet request to get into your port and then to your internal network. What do you put in Inbound port and what do you put in Private Port?
Then how do you access your internal computer remotely once you setup the port forwarding? What do you put in as the Computer Name?
Also, how big a risk do you expose your internal computer to this "openings"?
Can you remote access a non Windows computer? Suppose you have a Mac inside your network?
I know these are a lot of questions! But this is getting exciting!

Are you trying to connect via Wifi or the GPRS/3g connection?
mackaby007
5th April 2007, 11:08 AM
@ Wu. I can't be sure...there seem to be several places from where one can port forward. I applied it in Windows Firewall, On my router in 2 places and that's about it.
@ Eagle 1. I've tried both GPRS/HSDPA and Wi-fi, but to no avail.
Using LogMein over GPRS or wi-fi, I have no problems, but from comments I have read, WM6 RDP is much better + I would like to be able to connect via wi-fi for speed purposes.
I've checked and know that there are two IP addresses; my PC's one (which I have port forwarded 3389 to - not sure where it should be done so may have screwed it up by applying in several places) and the web based IP (which I believe to be non-static - I'll try to amend that today).
I'm using my Password and name as per XP Pro log-in details and my PC's IP (192.1xxxxxxx) as the computer name and click the 'save password option'.
I'm at a loss here and cannot understand what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for your time and help guys. :(
Edit: OK I've made my Computer IP address static now, but still no joy....any ideas anyone??

WHen you using WiFi you should be using the 192.1xx.xxx.xxx address and when using GPRS/3g you should be using your public IP address like 66.xx.xx.xx or the address that does not begin with 192 or 10. It will be easier to get it to work on Wifi and once its working on Wifi, then getting it to work on Gprs/3g will be easier. There is less outside/firewall issues using wifi. Do you have another pc on your network? Could you try access your pc via the other pc (or borrow someone's laptop) need to make sure remote works.
DO you know anyone you can trust to share your outside IP address (the non 192 address) so that they can try it with their pc to verify that the firewall and other software is setup ok? If not can you try from your office?
I would try to make sure your PC can be accessed with Remote/terminal services before trying to resolve the athena issues. Sorry I seem to be of little help

OK run a few tests with another PC on the same network and no go....so obviously I don't have my own PC setup correctly. I've installed all the software relating to Remote desktop off of the Original XP Pro CD and rebooted...no joy.
Disabled Zone Alarm Firewall...no joy.
Port forwarded 3389 to my Computers IP address (should that have been the Internet IP address instead?)
I know it's something simple I'm missing, but it is alot to ask anyone to go through it step by step to see where I've gone wrong. :(
Does anyone have a link to a knowledgebase or forum where this is explained in detail with various connectivity options taken into consideration?
Sorry for the repeated requests for help all, but this is quite important to me. Cheers.

Finally!! It works perfectly on my wifes XP Pro PC with Zone Alarm either deactivated or uninstalled. Takes about 1 second to get in too. Really well put together app and works very fast over wi-fi.
Bad News! I just cannot get it to work on my own PC which is on the same network! I've done a close comparison between the two PC's and adjusted mine to match hers, but to no avail as usual.
Error message claims that it is an incorrect IP address, but I'm positive it's correct as I found it by running 'ipconfig/all' and reported a very similar IP address to my wifes PC....Just the last digit was different...implying that the address is different just by one digit as they are on the same network.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks again Eagle1, wu5262 and everyone else who has helped me thus far.;)

Eagle1...Thank you so much for sticking with me on this one. That link you gave me, provided such detailed instructions and other stuff that I was able to resolve my problem on my PC.
It's working great now. Thank you so much.:)
The problem was one small thing...Terminal Services had to be started as it was set to manual. I have now changed it to Auto. That was it! (oh...& it was disabled).
Been on this for 10 days now, thanks to you it's all up and running.
Whilst things are going well......to be able to access this the non-wi-fi way, would I have to install the web based software and then simply enter the Internet IP instead? Or is there more to it?
Thanks again Eagle1.

Glad I could help.
As for using the non-WiFi, there a lot of maybe's and if's regarding using your cellular connection, but it is worth trying.
Basically you would enter your outside or public ip address to connect. (no need to install any other software on your PC or PDA) unless you are running dynamic public IP address.
You may face the following issues
1) Your Public Ip address is not static (does not stay the same). If that is the issue you can use a service called dynamic dns or something like that (it is free) You may need to register a domain name (cost is between 3.95 to 35.00 USD per year, depending on who you register your domain name with)
2) Need to forward your public ip address to your private ip address in your internet router (so public ip 66.11.13.23 points to 192.168.1.22) obviously these numbers are just made up. Carefull as this will open your PC up to the outside world. Need to make sure you have a good firewall. You could just open open port 3389 or more, it's up to you.
3) Your ISP may block the port used by remote desktop (port 3389)
But, I would say try it and see if it works....
Good Luck....

Hi Wu,
Disregarding Microsoft's comical demo of the Visa Voice Recognition, I wonder, would it be possible to remotely run Voice Recognition in Vista through the Athena? Could you try it? That is you speak into the Athena and Windows Vista transcribes voice to text e.g. in Word in more or less real time through Remote Access.
Thanks,
David

i can confirm you can do remote desktop with bluetooth, that's what i was doing before. The reason is quite simple, i don't need to turn on wifi in Athena, i already set up my bluetooth to sync with my computer, so turning on remote desktop in this way is just one click away. But that is history already, i am now using 3.5G connection to do remote desktop, basically, my 3.5G connection is even faster then my wifi :) and it's unlimited usage too.

But that is history already, i am now using 3.5G connection to do remote desktop, basically, my 3.5G connection is even faster then my wifi :) and it's unlimited usage too.

Here you go, that's what I meant.
You have unlimited on T-Mo? How much is that, 50 quids? Is coverage good? I have a US T-Mo account, still waiting for HSDPA.
well, it's not really unlimited, that what they say but i think the limit is 3GB, anyway, i pay 37 pound and it's HSDPA with speed of 1.2 Mb, coverage is good, at least in London.

37 quids for 3 Gb is more then fair. And reception on the Athena is good? I wonder how much of a good tracking device it could be if paired with a software such as Copilot.
Thanks.

both the GPS and 3.5G works perfectly on Athena, just make sure you have the right data package, and the right company, (avoid Vodafone)

Wow, this version is a LOT better than what comes with WM5 ! Does anyone know if you can change the resolution on the PC side ? If I go to the display properties I can only see 640X480 which is not enough for some hardcoded dialogue boxes ;-| I wouldn't mind scrolling if I could set it to 1024X768 somehow ...

How ? In the client settings I can only choose "full screen" and limit desktop to PDA screen size. If I go into the display settings of my desktop all I can get is 640X480. I'm running XP. Am I missing something ? Maybe a registry entry on the desktop ?

Anyone know why I cannot connect.
I enter our fixed IP address 80.X.XX.XXX user name and password.
I can access any of our machine via remote desktop using the above settings.
We have SBS Server 2003. Is there any other prot forwarding I need to set up?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

You'll have to route port 3389 on the 80.X.XX.XXX addess/router to the local PC, if you haven't already done so.
I have routed my 84.xxx.xxx.xxx port 3389 address to 192.168.0.10. :)

Wm6 rdp is better because:
1) It changes the resolution AND color depth so you can use your PC at 640x480 NATIVE insteat of having it resized.
2) It is fast even using GPRS necause of the 640x480 resolution
3) It uses quite well the normal athena KB

Logmein changes resolution & colour & works with the keyboard as well..

Nice alternative to logmein / gotomypc
One off payment (15 day trial first) and has a few more neat features. Can use soft keyb to
You can change a bunch of visual settings and encryption to make it faster. Its a lot faster than logmein for me anyway, and it has lovely scroll bars to move the screen instead of holding the edge of the screen with the stylus (very nice if your remote is a 30inch monitor like mine :) . It does take a long time to load initially, but once its going its pretty damn fast. Doesn't load special vid drivers either or any of that other crap.

You have to forward port 3389 to your computer. See here: portforward.com (http://portforward.com/)
