With the help of many nice guys on this forum and on IRC I managed to reconstruct a flashable ROM from a Vodafone VPA compact GPS romdump!

What does this mean? We finally have a working german ROM with GPS support.
I'll attach the readme for further details.
Enjoy!

UPDATE:
Version 2.0 is released: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299577

ZakMcRofl's German Trinity/P3600 Rom with GPS (1.23.162.2)
================================================== ========
Lange genug hat die deutschsprachige Community auf dieses ROM gewartet.
Jetzt ist es endlich da: deutsches WM5 Betriebssystem inklusive Support
für das eingebaute GPS-Modul.

The german speaking community has been waiting for this ROM for a long time.
Now it's finally here: german WM5-OS with Support for the build-in GPS module.

Über dieses ROM / About this ROM
================================

This ROM is based on a Rom-Dump of a german Vodafone VPA compact GPS.
The following items will be flashed:
- Crashproof bootloader (written by Des)
- Original HTC splash screens
- Operating System 1.23.162 in german, taken from VPA (Thanks to SN)
- Radio Rom 1.38.00.11 (ripped by pof)

WARNUNG / WARNING
====================

Due to the flashing of a crashproof bootloader this Update should be relatively
safe. However every user should be aware of the risks:
If something goes wrong during Flashing (USB-cable removed, power outage) there is
a slim chance that your device is beyond (user) repair.

Installation
============
- Trinity aufladen

- Charge your Trinity
- Connect via ActiveSync
- Start ROMUpdateUtility and follow the instructions
- When SSPL is copied, confirm program launch on Trinity
- Wait (do not remove USB cable, better not use PC during flash)

Yesterday it was late when I released this ROM so I feel like the release was a bit rushed. For example I didn't have time to test it on a second Trinity.
So PLEASE, if you don't know what you're doing, don't update yet. Wait for someone with experience to try it and if he gives his ok, go ahead.

I'm pretty sure it works just fine but since we're talking about 500€ devices I figure a warning too much doesn't hurt.

I have the following problem:
When I start the update progress and the screen with the progress bar appears on the desktop, I have to confirm the launch of a program on the trinity. After that I get on the trinity a screen, that has a red, green, blue and white field. In the red field it states TRIN100, IPL-SSPL by Des and so on.
In the white box it says: USB. On the desktop I hear the sound like the trinity disconnects.
Just after that I get an error on the desktop: "ERROR 246: DEVICE NOT RESPONDING". I then have to exit.
After resetting the trinity it works normal.
Any idea?

ulischultz, check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297662&highlight=error+246

They suggest to re-run the updater when you see the bootloader screen (multicolour). And to check for valid Activesync connection.
Also, if you're using Vista for flashing you'll need to find the correct driver (Activesync 4.x driver). Its available here, just search for "Vista update" or something like that.
Obviously its easier to just flash it under XP if you have an XP machine available.

Yes that was the problem, that I flashed it with vista! I did it again now on XP and it worked!!!
Everything fine! GPS is working!!!
THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I disagree with me_phisto:
You don't need to unlock it, simply flash it.
The warranty is a different issue. If you flash back an original ROM before you send it in, you'll be fine. Especially important is to flash an original SPL instead of the current crashproof one.

Good luck, give it a try :)

IŽll give it a try for sure later this evening. IŽll report back on the PPC-Forum. Since I have to send it in sooner or later due to the peeling problem I simply reflash the original rom. One last question: Is there any Vodafon branding (will the HTC communication manager still be there)?

ZakMcRofl
21st March 2007, 08:08 PM
There's a differenc colour layout but no real branding. I guess this is done in the VPA ExtRom which I don't have access to.

CommManager is there.

This German ROM Update makes a good impression, but I have a problem with the synchronisation with outlook. The Dates / The Calender doesn't synchronise. Only the contacts, mails and notes are on the Trinity, not the dates.
Does anyone have a solution?

Yes, the activesync issue is a know problem.
I don't know the exact reason but it goes away for most.
You'll find a few things you can try in this post:
http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/showpost.php?p=856417&postcount=32
If possible, let us know what change fixed it.

I had the same problem with active sync.
My solution:
i've updated my active sync. (from 4.2 to 4.5).
i've deleted all devices in active sync.
then i restarted my notebook and connected my Trinity.

Now all works create.

Thanks ZakMcRofl for the rom!!!

Thank you ZakMcRofl,
Finanlly we get a German GPS ROM. Works pretty well. Bass was flat first but installed the Bass Fix for every ROM and now it's perfect.

@n0b0dy: Thank you for the hint with new installation of active sync.
Calender entries are syncronized now

Hi@all,

first I wanna thank you all for this great resource of information and releases.
All you guys rock....

I know that there are problems of restoring backups after flashing. But what if I got a german ROM version (Original HTC), create a backup, flash this new VPA cooked version and restore the backup?

The language should not be a problem anymore (redarding filenames/ reg entries). Are there other diffenences between these two ROMs that should cause problems by restoring a full spb backup?

Thanks in advance.

Keep sharing informations... and free knowlege!
Copyright is superstition :D

After the problem with the sync of the dates, I have put an Original German Firmware on the Trinity and then again the ZakMcRoflEdition. Now it works perfect! Thank you very much for this ROM and congratulation for it!

Hi,

when you restore the system data of the old rom, GPS does not function any longer.

Found a way to get lots of space back.
The "proper" version I'll probably release tomorrow will have 62MB data space.

first of all: thanks for your great help,

I still can't decide to order the vpa compact gps 'cause I don't like the peeling issue and vodafone only sells black versions...
but there are retailers who will probably get some white versions - unfortunately without gps activated! So here is my question: as a german vodafone customer I'd like to use the free UMTS-TV-Channels offered by vodafone - are they still accessible for free with the ZakMcRofl ROM?? I read in an article that the free access is only granted with vodafone-branded devices... Has someone already tried this??

No, I'm having trouble with writing to ExtRom.
I have a few new features planned besides the 62MB data space:
- GPS settings
- no security question for unsigned cabs
- clean extrom
- no start menu sounds (does anyone really want those?)

I don't know how long it will take to figure out the ExtRom writing (for non-supercid devices). Olipro is working on a fix, apprently his patcher for Trinity is flawed.

first of all I want to thank you for this great work!
I have installed DOPOD ASIA ROM 1.123.707.6 to work with GPS and TOMTOM, but I want to change to a german ROM.
Has anybody testet the ZakMcRofl ROM with TomTom 6.x?
Are there Vodaphone branded menus in Windows or is it a originally Windows?
Thanks, weixelgeist

Zaks Rom is owrking like charm together with tomtom 6.x, no further hacks were needed.

But currently I am experiencing another prob: I am missing my memo icon within the start menue. And I am unable to add it... Anyone experiencing the same prob?

Zak,

just a newbie to all the HTC/WM5 world (got my Vodafone VPA Compact GPS in July), I am highly interested to test the new WM6 ROMS (original & cooked). To make sure I can return to almost original Vodafone ROMs in case I have to return the device for warranty, I wanted to secure I have the right ROM for getting back there.

When browsing all posts re. Trinity WM5 / Vodafone VPA Compact GPS in this forum I discovered that your cooked ROM "RUU_Trinity_HTC_GER_1.23.162.2_1.38.00.11 v1" mostly resembles the original Vodafone ROM which is (at least to my knowledge) not available anywhere for download. Am I right that the only difference between your cooked rom and the orginial Vodafone ROM is the Radio - you use Radio 1.38.00.11 while my uses Radio 1.29.00.01 and nothing else is changed? Or did you already change / edit things in your v1 of this ROM - I understand that you did some substancial changes in v2 and v3 posted later.

Thanks for your reply...
