Hello,
thanks for great tool,
would it be possible to ad function to backup/restore custom ringtone settings, whitch is stored only in pim.vol with every contact and is impossible to do it other way than manualy now? I dont want to use other ways to define custom ringtones like mortring etc. I prefer to use internal ringtone setting in every contact detail and this setting is stored directly in pim.vol but is not synced to outlook so its impossible to back it up and restore after ie HR :[
I think it would be piece of cake for you ;]
VicC
Search for VipRingTone (in this forum), you can create an xml for automatted restore...

I had to perform a hard reset on my HTC HD2 earlier today and ofcourse I did backup all data with the PPCPimBackup software. My headache right now is that restoration is impossible. The response says
PIM restore error
The format of the file "\Storage Card\PIM Backup_20110509.pib" is invalid
Please someone help me out. I need to have my contacts back. Someone referred me here saying Dotfred or one of the bright guys here will be able to help me out.
Hope someone sends some help sometime soon. Thanks.

Found a lot of people asking this and no solution so here is mine
To do this when the files are in binary format (compressed option in PIMbackup) I used the Windows Mobile SDK. I run an emulator for WM6.5 and set a shared directory via the emulator options.
On the pc side I put my PIMbackup and the PIMbackup WM executable. I then went to the storage card and run PIM to restore all contacts (an error came up but I clicked it away and action completed successfully).
I then did a backup with PIM and made sure to untick all options (mainly the compress one). When the backup finishes you can close down the emulator.
Then on the pc side find the new file, rename to .zip and extract. Inside there is a .csc file. Open excel and try to open this file. Excel will bring up a wizard for importing data. Choose semicolon as a delimeter and import.
The contacts should all be there. Select columns containining numbers and format them to be of type number with 0 decimal places.
Thats it

thanks for nothing.
how can anyone design a program that will backup to a folder on a storage card when there is no storage card in the device.
now while you exit the application and restard it again it will see the folder on the restore part of the the program on top of the screen and when pressing restore it will do so but since there is no storeage card it will f$%ck up all contacts.
as of now i have lost all contacts from this device.
jeese never heared of building in warnings or failsafes or even better a way to let you see what you backed up before restoring it.
arghhhhhhh

I'm using this program for about 2 years now on 4 or 5 different HTC devices. Always the backup and the restore process was perfect. I never had problems with corruption of data or anything else. The only "downside" is that I need now a version of this program for Android :))) But for Windows Mobile this program is the best for backup the personal data (contacts, SMS, tasks, appointments).
P.S. Maybe the creator of the program will see this comment and start to make a version for Android too.

If you switch from Windows Mobile to Android and want to synchronize all your contacts, calendar appointments and emails between Win-Mo and Android you can use Microsoft Exchange Active Sync from your Win-Mo device configured with the Google as Exchange Server. The configuration is very simple and you can follow steps indicated in the first page resulted from Google search for "Setting Up Your Windows Mobile Phone for Google Sync "
Attention !
The tasks synchronization is not yet supported and you MUST not check it or you will get error and nothing will be synchronized.

I already use the PIM Backup v2.8.5 for WM 6.1 and it runs well, and really loves this app.
but I want to ask, why the check box on the message option disappear? I still can check or uncheck it but I can't see the box and the sign, so I never know what I check or what I uncheck. please fix this or tell me how to manage it.

After years with various Windows Mobile phones I'm now very happy with my new Android smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Note).
I always used PIM Backup on WiMo and managed to import all my contacts out of the backup file into my Android contact app. But I couldn't find any solution to import my appointments (gathered since 2003!). The PIM Backup output file "appts_2011xxxx.csa" seems not to be a readable format (strings like "0xe6,0xd2,0x9a,0x2a, ..." etc.).
I neither own Outlook nor want entrust Google with one single character of my personal data, so I'm desperately searching for a solution to keep my appointments. If I only could make any readable text out of this backup file...
May I dare to hope for a solution? Please help me.
Thanks
Edit [SOLVED]: :) :) :)
After rereading and reareading the PIM Backup user guide I stumbled upon one phrase which gave me a flash of inspiration:
"The backup is totally independent of the version of Windows Mobile"
I remembered my old Pocket PC 2003 (somewhere in the depths of my drawers) and my (at that time) compatible old version of Outlook 97 with the corresponding Active Sync version. So I reactivated this PPC, restored the actual PIM Backup from the WiMo 6.5 Phone on it, and ... - ... I couldn't believe it - managed to sync it to the aged Outlook and from there into a readable *.csv format which I can edit and then import in the Android calender "Jorte".
Thank you DotFred, your PIM Backup saved my a...!!! ;)

Hello i have need from someone who want to make me a favor and help me.
Im ex Blackstone user and i move to Android.
I did some updates etc and i lost all my contacts from the SIM card and everything.
THe good news is that i still have on my PC a PIMbackup.pib file but its made like binary one..
There is a chance to get my contacts back!!!
WHat i need is someone with WinMo device can do it for one minute.
Just to run Pimbackup on his own Device and to restore the Contacts from the .PIB file i will provide
After this is done just re Backup them again BUT in normal mode without binary etc
in this case the final .pib file will be able to transfer it to a zip .csv file and Put all the contacts back in my SIM card via Gmail
So if somene want to help me will be really thankfull for that its emergency.
The other variant if someone do not want to use HIS device is to do the same procedure with a Windows Mobile Emulator but i don`t know how to work with this and make it to work on my desktop PC i already try several hours to set up everything but just not working
Thanks in advance

Hi tsalta,
I could help you and re-backup your contacts. I just sent you a PM.
Edit:
Somehow it seems, that's not possible to send you PM's.
Although I sent the message twice, it's not shown in my PM outbox.
Give me a hint how I can contact you, because I don't want to post my eMail address in public.

....pib is JUST rar.
after unpacking, ALL YOU NEED is...total commander + its lister + unicode VIEW.
then you have some copy-paste work, thats ALL.
notice then, that ppcpimbackup would be ULTIMATE tool if only it had rar encryption built-in to protect our DATA.
thank you.

Hi everybody.
I recently flashed my HD2 with a new ROM (WM 6.5.X), hence, I previously backed up all my info with Pim Backup 2.8
Then it came the moment I wanted to restore my messages (SMS), just the messages because I'm also using Outlook 2007 and I have all my agenda and contacts there.
Ok, I restore them and I have all my messages back to my device. Everybody who sent me an SMS is properly tagged (John Doe, David, Claire, etc) but If I go to my contacts profile, there's no SMS from anybody, somehow they're not associated.
Has anybody had the same or similar issues?
Thank you!

Dear Dotfred,
I encountered a major layout bug in the new version.
2.8.5 : on restore-mode, there are no checkboxes nor radiobuttons, like shown in my screenshots.
http://dl.xda-developers.com/attachdl/2797a7ca8d1cd0de7172dd0fda71f6d7/4f31d733/8/9/2/2/2/6/bug1.jpghttp://dl.xda-developers.com/attachdl/2a340105c2214507072c60e055a24627/4f31d733/8/9/2/2/2/7/bug2.jpghttp://dl.xda-developers.com/attachdl/28af15779ce52a77ffc42864bb77e6d2/4f31d733/8/9/2/2/2/8/bug3.jpg
2.8.0: I tried to restore the same backup-file with the previous version, checkboxes are there.

my device: Htc HD mini (HVGA), WinMo 6.5.3 , custom ROM
Did anyone else experience this?

nope, but i experienced nonexistent TICKS IN checkboxes(i mean i can tick things, but i cannot see them ticked), which is wm 6.5 bug, someone even had solution, but i lost it(sth with adding position to wm res with reshack, etc)..
it is not occuring in ANY of 6.1 roms i made, and with EVERY 6.5, and 6.5.x i tried.

Hey there all, it's 2 Bunny again.
A lot of you may remember the Diamond repair disaster of October 2011, when I managed to break the screen while attempting a repair. At this point, it just wasn't worth it to fix, and I ended up getting a Samsung Epic on a whim. It's a decent device (with a custom ROM, that is ;)), and ended up working out better for what I planned to use it for than I would've thought, but I still haven't completed the "migration" process completely. I have managed to sync my contacts and tasks and calendars (kind of) with various (lousy) sync "soulutions" for Android, but one thing I have not yet managed to move to the Epic yet would be my messages. I knew I had an older (but very much working) backup of my SMSes from one of my favorite Windows Mobile programs called PIM Backup. After a little reading, I found you could rename that ".PIB" file into a ".ZIP", which ended up working just fine. I was able to find a file inside with my messages backed up called "msgs_[date].PBM".
The question now would be, how can I get that msgs_xyz.PBM file migrated into Android? I have a program on Android called "SMS backup and restore" which takes XML files, so I was wondering if maybe there was software that could organize and convert PBM files into the XML files that "SMS Backup and Restore" is hungry for to help me get my old messages back.
Thanks.

2B:
you can try to open the msg-file with a text editor.
case 1: the file was not saved in plain text but in binary mode (which is of course the faster way to backup).
solution 1: then you would have to investigate how WinMo saves their files, and work out an application that converts the binary file to plain text. [EDDIT/ADD] since dotfreds PimBackup is able to do the same on your device, maybe he could give some help here
solution 2: restore your old pim file to a windows mobile phone, and then backup again, with unselected "binary backup" checkbox.[EDIT/ADD] to receive the plain text file
move on with case 2
case 2: you can open it successfully in a text editor and you can actually read all the messages.
solution 1: write an app / batch / whatever-you-are-able-to-work-with to make an xml patterned file.
solution 2: look for an application that can do that

Thanks. My experiment led me to finding that all my messages were actually in plain text when I opened that file in notepad, although I discovered that between every single letter was a space, and between every word were three spaces, and they didn't appear to be in any kind of organization whatsoever. Just to make sure, I checked the XML files that "SMS backup and restore" in Android had created for my more current messages, and it looked quite different (and very organized).
I'm guessing that with this I'll need to do "solution 2". I've never built a program or batch before, and I'm not sure if anyone has really made one. Maybe this is a long shot here, but are there any other Windows Mobile SMS export software? I have access to a spare Windows Mobile device for experimenting with that if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

PSUpdate: I did a bit more reading, and someone had actually created a program to do just what I'm looking for, described in this blog post (http://piemaster.net/2011/07/migrating-windows-mobile-to-android/). Unfortunately, I get the infamous "'python' is not recognized as an internal or external..." blah blah blah problem when I try to run it from the command prompt. Some further research (http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Move-Text-Messages-from-Windows-Mobile-to-Android-Smartphones-190708.shtml) led me to modifying the template in this program (http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/SMS/SMS-Exporter-Windows-Mobile-108541.shtml) and exporting from there. I will try this tomorrow, but I'm still curious what the community had to think.
