Hi guys, as you probably know by now, i have close relation with HTC, on the recent phone call with their senior engineer, i have been giving the first hand information about the first UMPC device of HTC !!!

It's call the HTC Shift, is uses the similar design as HTC Kaiser (i assume you guys have seen this device).

Here is the confirm spec:

7-inch touchscreen, 30GB hard drive, Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and Windows Vista.

I haven't got the chance to play with it yet, but my friend has and he says the key is very comfortable, fairly light weight. Built quality is very good, screen is amazing.

So when will be see this device? Well at the moment plan is for Q3, about the same time with Omni. So it's still quite a wait.

Below is a picture.

p.s. While i was posting this thread, i found out HTC has already post the info on their web! http://www.htc.com/
well, at least my post is still first hand in turns of spec :)

I though that is not new to all you you. I have told you this quite a while ago

none of the device is shipping use WM6 right now, the X7501 is just an announcement, it's not available now, but one thing you guys can be sure is once the WM6 rom is available, we can all flash it then

they are not planning to release it in Asia, only in Europe and US. They are selling it all under DOPOD brand in Asia

Sorry, quite confused..

Do you mean, the brand name HTC Shift will not be available in Asia but it will be marketed under the Dopod branding?

What's the project code name? (e.g HTC Athena aka HTC Advantage)

Yes, it won't be available in Asia as HTC Shift, i will be DOPOD (something).
They might even not sell it in Asia at all for this device by the way.
The code name of HTC Shift is Shangri-La.

BTW a important message here for all you USA buyer. The HTC Advantage won't be available in USA until Summer, but when it's available, i will be call HTC X7501, so is there any different between x7501 and Advantage, yes!
X7501 will have WM6 in built! So it means official WM6 ROM will be available around Summer.

Please also note the European HTC Advantage will only have WM5 for now.

According to the register, it will run vista, not windows mobile

Excellent specifications but too big for me ! (19 x 13 x 3 cm) which makes it more than twice the size of my Alpine !

yes, it runs Vista, this thread got a bit off topic because people are more excited about the WM6 upgrade rather then the new HTC Shift :)

anyway, i agree the size is quite big, my friend has already test it, and he say basically UMPC and PPC are two completely different product, which i totally agree.

got so tired of people trying to compare Athena with UMPC, i don't care that Athena cost like a UMPC, it has it's own advantage. And i will never want to run XP or Vista on my Athena as well.

Are you sure wu?
Now DOPOD is joint with HTC, so no more DOPOD brand even on asia... you can check at their web: www.dopodasia.com now they become www.asia.htc.com

Even HTC touch avaiable in asia with HTC brand...

Can you confirm or correct me?

From what I have been able to find out, it does not have a microphone, and you DO need a bt headset to use the phone functions.
I believe that the dual o/s is stupid tho! It is only due to the fact that m$ has not figured out how to make Vista work right yet as a stand-alone o/s, much less add telephony to an already EXREMELY buggy o/s!!
Hope this helps........Later

Many people are reporting that the shift does not have voice telephony capability only data gsm/utms/3g...Unless using voip?

Man that would suck

It becomes just an expensive toy! I forgot about this device as soon as I watched Ortega's video:( I don't believe I can use it also as a regular notebook. I am just waiting to see what the Kaiser has to offer, then I'll combine it with a nice tablet pc I have already.

I thought the same too (About the phone), But it has all the nessessary radios to use it as a phone, so maybe all it need is a phone program.

Also, Ortage saids you won't be using it as a phone, Because its to big, not because it lacks the capability. I think we'll need to wait till this
thing gets out into the wild so we can test it ourselves, or contact HTC and ask directly.
