What did you already try?
Have you tried a hard reset? Sometimes it's necessary to give a hard reset after the flashing part :)

Have you tried to disable Unicode Usage option (not sure this is the exact name)? Open your SMS inbox, then Menu -> Tools -> Options -> Text Messages. Then uncheck the Unicode stuff.

That's strange... ..I know the "problem" with the Unicode. But it manifests in messages with only a few characters being send as two messages. Not with reducing the amount of available characters :(

Actually, from what I've experienced, there are two Unicode problems. The first is getting only 70 chars when starting a new message. The second arises when using punctuated characters (דישח«, etc.) which lowers the limit from 160 to 70 chars. From what you've told, the phone says only a message will be sent and then two messages are sent?

This is probably the reason that some European providers added a "Unicode-Off" CAB to theis ext. ROM :)

I think he meant "characters", not "messages".
In unicode, each character is coded using 2 bytes (instead of 1), and I guess an additional header is required, thus explaining we get only 70chars., and not 80 as we would expect.
