View Full Version : Solution: To get ActiveSync Running Again

Getting ActiveSync running again. (Revised)

(Applies to situations where Active Sync fails to connect following the use of third party applications that clear the notifications queue but may include situations where AS does not connect through corrupt or missing notification files)

Using applications such as Scarybear, Memmaid, Pocket Mechanic and Sktools to clear the notifications queue is often a necessity to solve problems with alarms (either not going off or not cancelling etc.)

However, the file repllog, exe (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms861131.aspx) will show up using these applications and should NOT be deleted unless it is duplicated (exact duplicate, there may be 4 or 5 repllog files 2 of which are essential and may look like duplicates but are not). This is because these files notify the device that a USB cable has been connected and readies the device for Syncing. ActiveSync will not load if repllog.exe is missing in the TWO forms listed below:

1
repllog.exe
AppRunAtRs232Detect

AND

2.
repllog.exe
AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected

Adapted for the following but probably applies to other windows mobile devices:
HTC TyTN / XDA trion / MDA Vario II / VPA Compact III / SPV M3100 / Dopod CHT 9000 / Dopod 838 Pro

Step 1
To Replace repllog.exe - AppRunAtRs232Detect
(i.e. to get Active Sync to detect when you plug in the USB cable)

(Steps written for Memmaid, but Sktools is just as good. To ‘add’ a notification in Sktools just go to notifications and tap/hold an existing entry in the top list and an option to add appears in box drop down box1 enter "Start if RS232 connection......" and then tap gray "..." box and navigate to the windows folder and tap repllog.exe, finally tap OK in bottom left corner.)

1) Open 'MemMaid and go to the Notification Queue tab
2) Tap Add
3) In the Add Notification - Program field, tap the '...' icon.
4) In the folder tree, find \windows\repllog.exe and tap it.
5) In Add Notification - Event', choose 'An RS232 connection was made'.
6) Tap the 'Add' icon.
7) Exit and long-press the on/off button until the warning appears and tap yes to turn off the device.
8) Long-press the on/off button to restart the device and Active Sync should work on connection of the USB cable.

Step 2
To Replace repllog.exe AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected

(i.e. to get Active Sync to open/connect to network on detection of the USB cable)

The second notification you need is repllog.exe AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
Follow same procedure as above choosing the option in sktools or memmaid to start when a network is detected OR just use this little application that will make the entry for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...6&d=1155128708 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=29636&d=1155128708)

(to use this application save the file to your PC or Device. Put it on the storage card (using a PC card reader if necessary) and tap to run. (it is a PPC EXE file not to be run on PC) You will simply get a screen that has an OK button. Tap it and you are done. Restart your SKtools or Memmaid and the key should be there.

Check you now have both replllog notifications present. You may have other repllog.exe notifications listed but you MUST have the two named above. The sub names of the repllog entries may differ slightly from those given above. The above names are in an abbreviated form as they appear on an untouched device, but so long as you have one that mentions RS232 and one that mentions network or RNDIS you should be OK.

You may be able to run AS now or may need to restart device and or PC.

NB: I have run a full test of the procedures here to test whether replacing these files reactivates Activesync. I deliberately deleted all my notifications (a risky thing as we know) - Activesync refused to start as expected. Using the methods above I replaced the two repllog entries and confirmed their presence. Activesync is working again.

Hello!
Great explanation, thanks for the information.
Since a few months when I have this problem I've to reboot the ppc and/or the pc untill I discovered this app that reboots the activesync connection
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/applications/resync.htm

I don't know if it do it in the same way than your post explains.
Greetings to all.

i guess this wont help my email sync problem to exchange will it? no, i thought not :(

i can sync contacts and calendar items wirelessly with exchange but not emails

EDIT:
I eventually fixed it by the software equivalent of the power cycle. i unticked Email, let it delete all sync'd emails (none) then ticked it again. it's always the easy fix isn't it - i was ploughing through detailed settings, reg keys etc :)

Hi,

I use an HTC Charmer with WM5 on a Win XP system.

I deleted all my notifications the other day - I have no idea why I thought that was a good idea but at the time I did :o

I have not been able to sync since.

I am about to try the 'resync' tool - linked from the second post in the thread and will post again either way.

EDIT: Resync did not work for me either.

Mike,

Your fix worked a treat. Thank you again.

Will.

Good news:)

I think what I need to do is add the second part (i.e. adding the second Repllog notification) as a standard part of this fix or at least get folk to check which Repllog items are there and which are missing without assuming it's just the cable-connected one that's gone. It's been useful to have you as a test case!!:D

Google's always useful:D

Memmaid
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279 (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279)

SKtools
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14288 (http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14288)

Please note though, that the above fix is designed for folk who have deleted their repllog entries - it may be useful in other situations where active sync fails, but it is not meant to solve other problems. Also if you have not installed much to your device it may be as easy to do a hard reset that will also replace the missing files.

Good Luck

Hi There

I am still having problems - ActiveSync doesnt seems to start - USB connection is not recognised by my VPA Compact III.

I have tried yous recommended steps..
I used SKTools (Notification Queue) to clear off the duplucates entries for repllog.exe ....

By mistake, all repllog.exe entries was removed, So, as you have suggested, I used Memmaid, to "Add" both entries.
Now under SKTooks - Notifications Queue , i see both enrties now:

Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive RS232_DETECTED AppRunAtRs232Detect
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive UNKNOWN AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected

But ActiveSync still not working - i cant use Internet Sharing as well.
When USB is plugged in, the AMBER (charge LED) lights up only for 1 sec and then turns off and , of course, AS wont work.
If i use infra-red connection, it syncs well!

pls help.

thanks.

Hi there
I'm not sure but those two entries seem odd to me - the InActive and UNKNOWN parts.

Could you try the following?:

1
In my above post there is a link to an application that you download and put on your SD card and tap to install - could you try it. When you run the app it does not appear to do much just ok it and it will close. That app installs AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected.

2.
Using Sktools go to the notifications queue.

In the upper window tap and hold on any entry and an option to "add" appears - select it. In the drop down box at the top scroll down until "Start if RS232 connection..." appears and select it.

In the next box "filename and arguments" tap the grey box with "..." This opens a directory listing - go to the windows directory and scroll untill you find repllog.exe and tap it.
Now tap the ok tab bottom left.

The two required entries should now be present.

Connect or reconnect your device to the PC and hopefully a connection will be established.

Post back with problems.

Hello Mike. Thamks for your reply.

By the way, I tried your suggestions to create back (add) both the Notifications entry.

I deleted off both repllog.exe entries shown in my Notification Queue (shown using SKtools).
Before I proceeded, SKtools show no entries with repllog.exe.

For the first one, I use "add" function on the MemMaid - Notification Queue Tab.
I checked the notifications outcome, using SKtools.
The result, show below:

Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive RS232_DETECTED AppRunAtRs232Detect

Then I used the small script "FixASRunAt.exe" copied to the SDCard, and executed it.
As expected, the Notification Queue in SKtools shown the 2nd entry being added as below. (take note - Event Type its also shown as unknown).

Application Notify Type Event Status Event Type Arguments
---------- ----------- ------------- ----------- -----------
repllog.exe CNT_EVENT InActive UNKNOWN AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected

Then I tried Activesync/USB Connect - still wont work!

How to manually add the repllog.exe .... .... AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected
instead of using the small script....
On MemMaid, "Add" notification, on what "event"

What else could cause this problem?

thanks.

Mmmm.. When adding the AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected using Sktools it would be "Start when a network has been connected" - I'm not sure about Memmaid.

The script works well on mine so I think you have more wrong than just the missing repllog entries.

What happens if you connect to the PC and start repllog manually by tapping it in the windows directory?

don't know wether this is relevant, but it might be to those for whom this fix is not working. I have manged to break my activesync a few times now purely by switching between internet sharing and syncing. An activesynce re-install/repair always sorts me out.

That will work when there is a problem with the PC end of active sync.
This fix is purely to replace essential repllog files on the Hermes.

So the fix outlined here would not fix a broken PC installation of Active sync and your re-installation of Activesync would not fix missing repllog files.

Mike,

I went mad with memmaid (a little knowledge is dangerous!)

OK, I followed your excellent instructions and used Memaid to add the first ...

RS232_DETECTED "AppRunAtRs232Detect"

I cannot however find an event to add the second one. There appears to be no "AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected" in the drop down list.

Maybe I'm dumb but I assume I select Add and select "repllog.exe" a second time and then it should be in the pull down box.

I can only see.....

Run at time
A PC card device changed
A full device Data restore completed
An RS232 connection was made
Data Synchronisation finished
The system time changed
The time zone changed
The device woke up

Any help greatly appreciated as I am off on holiday at the weekend and want to get things synched up before then

Ok, well, if your PC has a card reader the simplest way would be to download this small application and put it on the sd card http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...6&d=1155128708 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=29636&d=1155128708). Then just tap it to run it on the Hermes. That will add the 2nd repllog entry. Check it has appeared with memmaid.

(By the way, I use Sktools and I have just realised from your list, that Memmaid does not have the Run on Network Detected option which would have been the item in the drop down list you refer to)

It's now working afer a few hours of headaches (well 5 actually and in bed at 2 am!

First the file fix did not work. The zip file opens OK on the PC but not on the SD card. I tried a fresh download via the Card Reader and on tapping in the TYTN it said it was not valid or the archive was not complete. I even extracted the file from the archive onto the Micro Sd card and when run I got the same mesage.

SKtools worked once I figured the software out.

For those new to the SKtools and WM5 in general here is where you find it

Run SKtools
Tap LH menu (View)
select Maintenance

Then third from top on screen (Notification Queue)

Then bottom left menu (Action)

"Add"

Drop down box at top - scroll down list until you see...

Notification Event_RNDIS_FN_D (you cannot see rest of the line in the window)
This was second from the bottom of my list

Now tap ... area underneath (beside Filename and Argument)

Browse to Windows folder, double tap...wait...then side scroll to

Replog.exe

Double tap

Make sure all is correct as above, then tap Bottom Left "OK"

Small box appears with "processed" Tap Ok in this box.

Do a full restart i.e. hold power off until warning, Ok and start up again

You should find it will now work...BUT!

After all of this mine would still not resync so I did this...

Start....Settings....Connections....USB to PC

Tick box "Enable advanced network functionality" was ticked. I unticked it and it all worked OK.

Don't know if the last bit affects anything else yet but I did notice somewhere before that if you have sync problems it is worth trying.

I hope the above helps those like me who although very happy woth Win are still learning to navigate WM5

Now how do I stop the annoying Sync pop up box every time I switch on :-(

"Connecting to Host" then disappears. Could it be I added unnecessary Notification when meddling?

Is there a list of important events anywhere so that I can check which are need and which not on a standard set up?

Glad you got there inthe end:) :)

Some useful info to add to the initial fix instructions and I'm glad you have given feedback - it's not until I get feedback that I can see where the instructions are weak or not clear or have a bit missing.

You were right to untick the "Enable advanced network functionality" and that should be in the fix and 95% of folks should get it unticked anyway.

The cab file does work but I did not say to extract once to Unzip it and move the unextracted cab to your device. (Not that it matters you got the SKtools route to work)

I also like your detail on the soft reset:
"Do a full restart i.e. hold power off until warning, Ok and start up again"

This is the gold star way to ensure changes are written back to the device. Regular soft reset (stylus in the hole) will often scrub any changes you just made.

So for this assistance I think a credit is deserved in the re-write of the fix, that I will get down to in the next few days.

With your permission I would take some of your wording directly.
We may even be ready to go "Wiki" with this.

Not sure about this:
"Now how do I stop the annoying Sync pop up box every time I switch on :-(

"Connecting to Host" then disappears. Could it be I added unnecessary Notification when meddling?"

But yes I think you have an extra repllog something along the lines of turn on when power on/detected, but before removing any maybe you could list the notifications that are repllog based on your device?

By all means use all or what ever you need of the instructions. They could have been neater but I was in a rush at lunch time.

BTW I did try the zip on the card too but with the same result i.e. error message.

The central directory was not found on the archive (or you were trying to open a disk other than the last disk of a multi-disk archive)

Replog entries are...

An RS232 connection was made - AppRunAtRs232Detect
00:00:00 presumably a timer at midnight, there are 4 of these!
The device disconnected from a Network
A PC Card Device changed - AppRunDeviceChange
Data Synchronisation finished - AppRun AfterSync
The Device Woke Up - AppRunAfterWakeUp (suspect this one is the sync dialogue box culprit)

I'm off now to browse the forum as I have some issues with my new Sandisk Ultra II 2 Gb card. Tom tom locks up sometimes with that card and I am also not sure but I think with my original Toshiba 1 Gb I could remove and insert it without having to do a soft reset. I have to do that with all of the cards now or I cannot see them in Explorer.

After arming myself with more knowledge I would like to try the vanilla rom as my Tytn is a "free" model (not locked to any provider)

The above solution applies only to those situations where you have removed the repllog entries using third party software to remove notifications. In particular where you have removed the two crucial repllog entries. It is not meant to be used for other situations where Active Sync is not running/connecting/synchronising etc.

You give no detail, so it is not possible to offer any suggestions.

My situation is very strange. After trying this and every other solution I could find, my 8525 will not sync. My computer shows connected, as I can ping my device and network shows connected. The only solution that will make it sync is to hard reset and restore to an earlier time, then it will sync normally....ONCE! One time then no more activesync. Once I disconnect, it is screwed. Furthermore, if I hard reset and restore to the same setting I did before, it will not sync again. I have to go to the next time earlier, and the same happens. Sync once, then no more. PPC is connected, but activesync will not connect. I'm about to skip this thing across the mighty Mississippi River and let the catfish deal with it!

BTW, my other device (Dell Axim x50v) syncs fine every time, so I'm pretty sure the problem is limited to this device.

The particular solution shown here is specific to the repllog entries, not for other AS issues.

This appears to be a common problem across a number of devices and manufacturers - curiously I just read about the problem with a Dell Axim.

You have probably tried all of these:

Run latest version of AS

On PC - If installed Disable Zone Alarm and all firewalls and SpySweeper

On PC - Disconnect all network connections

On PPC Start, settings > connections > USB to PC. Uncheck "Enable advanced network fuctionality"

In Connection Manager, disable USB close the window, reopen it, and re-enable USB again.

On PC AS Tools>Options >Settings - uncheck sync Pocket PC Date and Time

The final thing to try - if you are convinced it is the PPC is a hard reset - though you will have to repair the PPC with the PC. I assume of course that you have already deleted and re-established the relationship to see if that improves matters.

Hi gut, i don't want to open a new topic, just ask you a question and hope to find a solution..

I have 2 users, AS 4.5 installed. Both users have a ppc:
Admin: WM6
Limited User: WM03SE

All goes well, switching the user, the one has not connected the PPC, has Activesync disabled (i hope to not confuse the PC)

but.. Every login to a windows user, activesync windows popups, and manually i have to minimize it.

Ps: both PPC are on the same USB port (2 cables to sync are too..)

Yes, I've done all of this. I tried deleting these notifications and re-adding them also. I started un-installing programs that may use the tcp/ip stack and came to Yahoo! Go. After I got rid of it, it started working again.
Imagine that. Even though this (thread-notifications) ended up not being the problem, this is some very valuable info. Thanks for helping.

*BTW - The new SKTOOLS 3.1.8.2 has an option under Notifications to "Recreate Activesync". Pretty cool.

Mmmm did not know the new Sktools replaces repllog automatically.

Yahoo Go is a little program that syncs yahoo mail, calendar and contacts automatically.
Well, I thought that I fixed it. It's not syncing again. I don't know what the hell is going on. It synced for a day, now the same thing is happening. I thought maybe Yahoo was blocking it somehow, but something else is going on.
Is there anything else I can do besides the notification fix? I've done ALL of the basic stuff like disable firewalls, delete partnerships, usb-pc check-box toggle, un-install re-install (40 times). I think somebody is messing with me.

You're the man.
Thanks it worked immediately.
It's amazing howcome no oem like Microsoft or memaid have such a solution we only find it here.

Tjanks once again.

*BTW - The new SKTOOLS 3.1.8.2 has an option under Notifications to "Recreate Activesync". Pretty cool.

Thank you all. This worked for me also.:D
Best regards.

Hi! I am running Schaps ROM and some day Active Sync stopped working (I sync with 2 PCs)...

Your solution worked for me - but its no persistend solution... it seems that the problem returns again and again.

For a short period, i just started repllog.exe manually - but this trick doesnt work now too.

I feel pretty stupid - but i cant recognize a pattern when it works and when not... one day it syncs, the other not. Really strange.

I tried reinstalling AS and of course softresetted a lot (one hardreset too!)

So if there is any idea what to do - your help is really appreciated!

Thx, licht

EDIT: LED indicates that the device gets powered.... but then windows says that the device cant be recognized. AS indicates "not connected"... and while looking for a bug i discovered that AS somehow messes up with the dhcp - client which cant assign an adress for the virtual interface of AS. Additionally, the dhcp-client service cant be restarted. It kinda crashes then (resulting in a complete loss of the network connections) and cant be restarted: "error 1053"

When I ran across this post by Mike, I thought I had found the holy grail. I have been searching for days and days for a fix to my problem -- my iPAQ 2210 stopped turning on and starting Activesync when cradled (USB). It will charge, but I need to manually press the power button to get it to initiate AS and sync.

QUESTIONS:
* Is the problem in my device, considering this behavior is the same for my work and home computers and for years I never had any problem?

* I understand this is an HTC site but shouldn't the app linked on the website run on a WM2003 device?

* Does anyone have any other ideas besides uninstalling and reinstalling AS on the PC?

BACKGROUND:
I ran across Mike's reference to the AppRunAfterRndisFnDetected notification entry. WOW! I did not have that entry. Initially, I attempted to execute it on my PC ("not a valid app for OS"). Okay, I transferred it to main memory in my device and executed it ("not a valid Pocket PC app"). Okay, I finally followed the directions and installed it to my memory card and attempted to execute it from there ("not a valid Pocket PC app"). Okay, I installed SKTools and made the entry per Mike's instructions and it is now present in the Notifications cue to activate upon connection to network. Closed the SKTools and soft reset the device.
NO FIX. Am I crazy, or is the problem in my device considering this behavior is the same for my work and home computers and for years I never had any problem?

This site seems to attract a superior tech crowd when compared to other sites. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

I don't have SKTools or MemMaid on my PPC.

I don't have an SD Card.

a) Is there any way to directly edit the notification queue using the registry editor?

b) Are not the 3rd party freeware utilities CheckNotification and ClearNotification aware of the importance of the 2 replog entries, and if so, why do they delete the 2 entries?

Microsoft should immediately provide fixes to prevent triggering this chain of events: notification queue problems, 3rd party fixes, notification queue problems, other parts of the PPC software breaking..... (anything else?)

The average smartphone or a pocket PC user should not have to jump such hoops to simply get alarms, notifications and reminders working without breaking......

Folks:

Got it working thanks to the excellent advice on this thread!

A couple of things:

a) It's good there's a backup route to the phone via Bluetooth, so I could download SKToolsLite. I wish we also had Infrared on the Kaiser.

b) SKToolsLite does not have an option to Resync ActiveSync, as somebody reported. Too bad. I suppose the full version has it.

c) SKTools has 3 options related to ActiveSync in its notification queue manager for running replog:

1) when RS232 is detected
2) when network is connected
3) when RNDIS_FN EVENT DETECTED

I added both 2) and 3), since I was unsure which of 2) and 3) above would work.

Diabling the option for advanced network functionality in the USB-PC Connection Setting was critical, and ActiveSync wouldn't connect until I disabled this option. Any idea when this option would be useful, and how to avoid a future conflict with ActiveSync?

It's all back up and running now, after 4 hours of effort! Phew! The thing about Nokia is you don't have to spend so much time fixing things, even though it is fun, admittedly, to play with the phone at this level.

I wish Microsoft would fix Windows Mobile Alarm handling immediately!

Meanwhile, I have found SKTools a far better tool than pmclean (Doesn't clean fully) or Check/Clear Notifications (overcleans and causes ActiveSync to stop functioning). SKTools allows events to be marked/unmarked first before deletion, so that the critical replog events can be preserved.

Hi Mike,

we are using the infrared port for syncing the device with the PC. while connecting through tapping the IR icon in Programs->Connections->IR ActiveSync it will sync with PC without any problem.

But, while am trying to connect through executing the REPLLOG.EXE it will shows the "connecting to host" dialog but it take '57600 default connection instead of 'infrared port.

its really painful for us. How to run the active sync by running the REPLLOG.EXE

Anyone Kindly help us in this regard.

Regards,
Nandha

What if I don't have either one of those two programs and I can't get my 8525 to activesync?

Keep in mind that this solution only applies to missing repllog entries . This is only one possible cause of Activesync not connecting. In fact if you have neither Memmaid or SKtools or have not accidentally removed repllog entries from the notification queue, then this is unlikely to be your pronlem anyway.

If you think you have not deleted repllog entries then I suggest you search for a suitable thread on Activesync problems and post your problem there. Give full details about how and when the problem occurred and include info on whether it does not work on all PCs or only one. Also include any error messages that appear on either PC or 8525. Also ensure that in Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC - that "Enable advanced network functionality" is unchecked.

Hi,

Have a TYTN II / Kaiser handset. Been unable to sync it ever since i got it. Tried each and every single method posted here on this site. But to no effect. When my phone connects, it stays at the "connecting to host" popup.

Assistance would be most appreciated.

Have you made sure that the "Enable advanced network functionality" check box is un-checked ?

Start>Settings.Connections>usb-PC

yes, have done that also, as that is supposedly the most common solution. I have bought this phone from someone. Is there a possibility that while unlocking the phone, the drivers might have somehow got messed up? Can there be some hardware issue?

Might be a USB problem but:

Does AS start?
If not can you start it from the programmes menu?
Have you tried on another PC?
Have you tried a Hard reset?

Mike

So many questions, so little time before we die.

Hello Mikechannon,

I have followed every single step on post #1 but activesync never gets fully connected. It keeps on saying "Looking for Changes" (past the Connecting and Connected stage).... I can't sync my Contacts and everything but i can connect using PocketController and I can browse ppc file directory and cutting and pasting etc...

I use WinMo 6.1 Pocket PC HP Ipaq

How come?

The solution given in this thread is only for missing replog entries. This is not your problemas clearly it IS connecting but has a synchronization problem.

It may therefore be better to continue searching for other threads on sync issues.

I assume you have tried deleting and re-creating the partnership?
It can also take a loooong time for a large contacts list to sync.
I also remember a thread about problems where the contact list has some additional info fields completed - this can cause errors on syncing - but for now I cannot remember which fields caused the problem.
