I just tried to upgrade my MDA III to a new official ROM. I had done this last year already but after restoring a few wrong backups, the need arose to re-upgrade the ROM.
I followed the instructions but the upgrade process hung shortly after starting it while a window on the PC screen displayed "Checking the information on your device" while on my PDA's screen it said "USB" and "v2.05". I let it sit for 30 minutes, but nothing happened. I checked the internet for a solution but didn't find any. Apparently more people had the same problem, but nobody found a true solution for this problem or what was causing it. I then called T-Mobile's repair service and they told me you shouldn't see that screen for longer than 2 minutes so my MDA III was probably defective and needed to be repaired.
I did not accept that as an answer; my MDA was still responsive. If I resetted it, the display would show "Serial" and as soon as I put it in its cradle, the display changed to "USB". It didn't seem broken at all, but no matter what I tried, I could not get past the "Checking the information on your device".
Then I started thinking why it would hang there and what it might be doing. I figured, what if it's going through all stored data in storage memory and the SD card in search for the "information" it is mentioning? I have a 4Gb SD card in my PDA and transferring 4Gb over USB takes, well, for ever. So I removed the SD card and tried the upgrade again. And I was right. This time it immediately continued the upgrading process after briefly showing the "Checking the information on your device" window.
So if you do an upgrade, remove your SD card!
Just thought I'd share in case others encounter the same problem. :)
