Anyone know of a case that doesn't hold the keyboard? And, hence no magnets? Just want to carry the main device by itself in the smallest possible volume.

Thanks,
Krip

i search for something similar (didn't wanna start a new thread).

i'm looking for a case that can hold the device itself and the keyboard in two different pockets within the same case (can be a totalyl closed case, where you have to pull out the athena like the universal pda case from pielframa, but with two pockets). plus it has to have a very solid belt clip and should be as small as possible.

Well im looking for a Skin similar to whats available for Ipods and various other phones out there.

Just want it for the Screen and not the keyboard. So at least the screens protected whilst in my pocket.

Any help would be appreciated as this is the only niggle i have at the moment!

Cheers :)

If I understand you right tomchap, I'm looking for the same thing...a silicon skin for the main unit (preferably with a hard clear plastic cover for the screen). That would make the Athena slim enough to fit in most of my pockets and stop and serious scratches or damage to the device.

Have been looking too....something like this but in better quality in various colours.

Yep thats def what im looking for, like these

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/11609075/Gen_Skin_Case_For_Apple_Ipod_NANO.jpg

A clear see through plastic cover / skin would be ideal.

Ive looked everywhere, even the usually most reliable eBay and theres hardly anything available for the Ameo.

Loads of screen protectors but thats about it.

You would think someone out there would make one?

Am also looking for a case, but a reasonably weatherproof one that I can attach to my rucksack shoulder strap to hold the Athena when I am outdoors using it for digital mapping. I have the perfect one for my Hermes but am going to test the Athena to try the larger screen.

Stumbled across this...

The DIMENSIONS (Height x Width x Thickness): 178x115x20 mm are right for Ameo that is 133.5x98x16 mm

U1000 size, 9.5 x 2.2 x 13.4 cm
D-Pods 50, size (Interior): 8.5 x 5.5 x 14 cm, stretch fabric, snug fit, hard to take out as the width is a bit tight (stretched), I like this coz the material (got protection), http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Camera_Pouches/designed_digital/D-Pods_50.aspx

Both excellent suggestions, thanks very much. I ended up with the Pouch 20 because I like the fit better and it is thinner, therefore easier to carry on my rucksack. Took it out for a test ride yesterday. Both case and Athena digital mapping worked great.

If its the case I've got then the 'pouch 20' is an all in one case designed for digital cameras and similar size units. I bought mine online from jessops here in the United Kingdom.
If I am wrong and this is NOT the case 20 talked about then forgive & sorry.

jessops case 20 page can be found here (http://www.jessops.com/Store/s36049/0/Digital-Bags-and-Cases-and-Housings/Lowepro/Rezo-Pouch-20-%28Slate-Grey%29/details.aspx)

My pda is NOT a u1000 but similar. Just stumbled on this thread. This pouch 20 is smaller than u1000 so Ive just been told so sorry for the error.Must be a different one.

How did you managed to put the U1000 inside ?
U1000 size, 9.5 x 2.2 x 13.4 cm
Rezo 20 size, 7.5 x 3 x 10.5 cm

BTW, i saw something similar, but since it is 'zipper', it is quite hard to take out/in without scratching the unit.

Nice! Thanks for the post. I can't wait to see if it will be designed to allow you to continue to connect the keyboard to it. An option of sorts. The only negative I can think of is that it'll stick to your pocket when you try to put it in there and take it out. Same thing happens to my iAudio MP3 player with its silicone case. Maybe they'll have a belt clip for it!!! :-)

I have now found the Lowepro MX 20 case to be the best solution for hooking to a rucksack while riding (see http://www.parkcameras.com/ProductDetails/mcs/referrer/Froogle/productID/827/groupID/5/categoryID/20) and available in many shops on Tottenham Court Rd. I have added some waterproofing but not yet tested it in very wet weather since the weather has been pretty good these past weeks. I used the Pouch 20 in serious wet weather without waterproofing and found that it did not stay dry inside. I have decided that in very wet weather I will transfer the Athena to a small WXtex waterproof bag I found in an outdoor store.

Looks to me like it protects your screen from being scratched. But other than that it isnt a truely portable solution for carrying just your screen about with the minimal of material.

Thing is protection, i know everyone goes on about it, hehe, but If i had my ameo in a silicone case id be so worried about the screen breaking.

What I'd like to see is a case/holster similar to the iPhone where the X7500 simply slides in. Slide it out to use, slide it in to store (on your belt). The screen would be against the body, protecting it from scratches. I don't care for the keyboard, so I don't need to accommodate that. Anyone seen something like this?

I found an old Dicota PDA case I used to use for my Hitachi G1000 and HP iPaq HX4705. The X7501 fits snugly inside. I cannot find the model number and I do not see anything like it on their web site. I'll post pictures later.

This could be IT. A few questions:
1. Is it leather?
2. Is it a snug fit or slightly loose fit?
3. Is the flap closed with velcro?
4. Where could I buy this?
5. How much does it sell for?

Cheers mate, thanks for the head up.

Cheers mate, thanks for the head up.

1. It is ballistic nylon
2. The PDA fits snugly inside, not loose at all
3. The flap uses velcro
4. I am still trying to find out where I got it (I have had it for awhile...)
5. It was probably only about $15US.

If I find out where I got it I will edit this post.

Yesterday in a GAME shop (it's a branch of videogames rent and sell company in some contries) I saw a case for Nintendo DS very similar to that Dicota. I was testing and looks OK. Then I tested more DS cases and many of them admit the X7500 with keyboard.

I could suggest everyone to try to find Nintendo's DS cases for the X7500.

If I can find something better I will grab one of those.

Amen!!! More than half of these posts missed the spirit of the thread. Something that adds minimal volume to the unit itself is what being looked for. Yet, people keeps suggesting one bulky leather case after another. If you want a bulky leather case, use the one that already came with the unit and save yourself the money. This product suggested in post #13 looks good but seems to be a vaporware http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=7566 It is still *due soon* ever since May.

Another one I tried to buy from Mobile Planet last week is now told *discontinued* http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=150067

This looks promising and so far on this thread, this is the only one that seems to make sense to me, if the dimension is right. Could you post some picture showing your Athena in it? This could be IT.

Here are a couple of cases that I have been using. The first one is zippered and well padded but there is no belt clip or anything. I generally just put a hand-strap on the zipper pull when using it. The device fits nicely in this case, with or without the keyboard and it is the type of case you can just throw in your briefcase or travel bag without worrying about the device being damaged. Again, I think I picked this one up for about $10 CAD at Princess Auto.

The second case is the Targus I mentioned above. It is a combination of nylon and neoprene with a velcro flap and a nylon/velcro belt-loop on the back. While the unit isn't a perfect fit, the neoprene sides stretch so it will accommodate the keyboard as well. It is easier to insert and remove the device without the keyboard though (no kb in the picture).

Found one with a belt loop that's nearly perfect !

It's an "SKPad Universal 4.3" GPS" holster. Can't find a picture of it on the net, will try to post pictures tonight.

Pros:

- Can't think of a way to make a more fitting case for the Athena !
- Very, very thin. It actually makes the Athena look almost compact, lol. Definitly goes un-noticed under my suits vest (it is to note that I have a flat belly :-) );
- seemingly very good quality, will have to validate that with use;
- screen *extremely* well protected with *two* hard plates;
- even room for a few (tried 3, maybe more) of miniSD inside the cover;
- top leds can be checked easily;
- very classy.

Cons:
- no protection *at all* on the sides (especially the corners);
- side stretch-bands hide all but the Power button and the headphone output.

All in all the best case I've tried so far, and I think I'll stop looking for one.

Tonight for the pics ! :-)

There, for the more impatient, here is one that resembles closely to the SKPad:

http://www.grosbill.com/4-selection_grosbill_housse_en_cuir_pour_gps_3_5_pcs-64859-mobilite_pda-housse_gps

BUT !

- stiches and lining aren't white but black with the SKPad, for a more classy result;
- The inside pocket (holding the credit card) in the SKPad isn't oriented that way.

Aside from that, it's exactly the same. :-)

I use the Boxwave FlexiSkin on my Wizard. I rarely use itskeyboard, but even if I did, the skin peels off and slips on easily.

I also use their screen protector. I like both the Crystal Clear and the Anti-glare. With a skin and a screen protector, my Wizard is complete protected from scratches (don't drop it though), it is light weight, easy to grip. It's a bit tricky in a small pocket because of the texture of the FlexiSkin.

I would like a similar skin for my Athena. I don't plan on using and carrying the keyboard. I want a skin just for the main unit.

I submitted a product request at the Boxwave site, and they responsed, saying that they are currently developing FlexiSkin for new models, and that they develop their products based on the number of requests they receive for a particular model.

If anyone else is interested please submit your request at the Boxwave request form.

http://www.boxwave.com/community/request/index.htm

Here's what I submitted:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have the HTC Advantage PDA Phone.

I would like to have a skin for the phone that would work without the removable keyboard that comes with the phone.

I know that many other owners of the phone are like me, and never use keyboard. We rely on the on screen keyboard. Instead of having to carry the keyboard and the heavy leather case, with the its embedded metal to attract the magnetic keyboard, I prefer to just carry the phone. However, I would like to protect it.

Please consider creating a skin for just the phone without the keyboard.

I didn't want one with a clasp, but rather a sliding style case. Also, I purchased my Advantage used, and it came with a bulky leather case that left the case loose when not braced with the keyboard.

So I got sick of looking for a case and just made this. Aluminium shell protects the back and 1/2 of the front. I usually put the phone in with the screen facing inwards to protect the scree from impacts.
I wanted to use microfiber for the inside, and canvas for the outside, but i couldn't find any at my local fabric store.
