View Full Version : Phone Suite vs Phone alarm

It would seem lots of us like these type programs. Neither one seems to be working great with WM 6.0.
Here's my issues using latest beta of Phonealarm: loosing graphics on reset, sometimes the today plug in doesn't appear. Alarms seem to work and profiles seem to switch correctly.
Also just feels unstable.
Trying PhoneSuite from SBP. Starts fine and runs well. Like the photo dialer. Major issue: only one time based profile; can't see the current profile icon or change it if I click on the space where it is (though dropdown list appears); Caller ID doesnt work with incoming calls, but offers to send SMS to missed calls.
Anybody else having these type issues?

I have been messing with profile switchers and whatnot for sometime now. Typically haven't had too much trouble with Phonealarm...however I know what you mean when you say...just feels a bit unstable. Probably comes from using it long enough to have had some bad betas...so it just gives you that feeling...
I am trying the new Phone Suite from SPB...not bad, but it seems a bit limited as you have mentioned with the profiles. Plus, I am using Mobile Shell right now and you get messages, missed calls etc on the today "Now" screen, the only drawback with Mobile Shell or their new Phone Suite for that matter is they don't show you number of Voicemails, Phone alarm is the only one I have seen that does this. I do like Phone Suite's photo contacts integration...that is pretty cool...so I am still messing with it a bit. For a profile switcher...I am currently using PocketZenPhone v6.103 (doesn't have the missed call, SMS etc but that is what the Shell Now screen offers). This appears to be really nice so far. Lots of custimization, profiles switch quickly and you don't have to have a today plugin..you can have it just as in icon in the bottom toolbar.
Hey on another note. How is Black 2.5 running on your device? I have 2.0 on mine and love it, just recently lost my camera function for some reason and was thinking about flashing my device to 2.5 and hope it comes back.

oosing graphics on reset, sometimes the today plug in doesn't appear.
It's a stupid bug in lots of WM phones, this happens occasionally on Black 2.0 and used to happen when i had a Prophet.
but there's a little workaround.. when the phone booted up and started to load the today screen, just quickly press the Windows hard key twice !

Im running phonealarm 1.6 beta 13 (build 134) and have experienced no instability or today screen troubles?!
I have had no problems with PA ever!? The latest beta (14 build 138) however is very unstable...but its a beta so doesnt reflect the final product!

Only downside to O2plus vs Phone alarm for my purposes, is I like to be able to assign different or no sounds to emails/text alerts depending on the active profile. If I set the ringer to nil, (ie a silent profile) will that kill the email notification too? (I will check later but am going to be tied up for a while now
PS - Scrog, search for the 'amended' version i n fact, I seem to remember JJ posting it somewhere in the last week or two?

Try Pocket Zen Pro. I had issues getting this to work on my Softbank X01HT when it was Japanese WM5, but seems to work great on Black 2.0 / 2.5.
The today screen is pretty much only profiles + some time / operator information, but it is just as customizable as Phonealarm with regards to setting different sounds for different profiles, etc.
The "Today" element is very minimalistic which I actually like after I got used to it.
Actually, you can configure the "Today" element to be just a single line on your screen; i assigned a hardware button to change profiles and it is much easier to use than phonealarm in that respect.

I like PhoneAlarm and never had problems with it except for some skins that allows direct WIFI on/off and are not compatible with the new connection manager (the Trinity one). Have tried the SPB app but it is useless for me cause it has only one time based profile and I use at least 3 time based profiles. PA has more options and is much more useful...comparing to SPB it use 2mb of storage PA use only 900kb of storage!

Yep, currently using it with Black 2.5:D however, this is version 5, and not 5.02, which should be a little better (Photo Contacts Pro).
features wise, it has things that i prefer than the others.
I will give PA another chance although it doesn't deal "right" with "Reject calls and send SMS" or with the Profile based on User or Category.

well i got home last night at 3am, kinda tipsy and too energized from all the vodka redbulls so i reflashed to 2.5 cingy and installed a bunch of apps. The last app i installed was phone suite and my device was running like ultimate crap. I had to soft reset it 2 or 3 times and still the same thing. I started it in safe mode and uninstalled phone suite now everythings fine.
Since their a couple of you saying phone suite works flawlessly, i'm gonna give it another shot now. maybe something went wrong during the install.

PHone alarm is up to build 141 which is supposed to be better. I got these very strange files filling up my device after monkeying around with version 139 (140 was very bad). These were files with symbols for file names and messed up dates. Couldn't delete. had to go with a hard reset and restore with no PA back up (2 days old) which had phone suite instead...
Check your files for these strange lil files (assuming you have phone alarm) they were in the root directory.
Never did find the O2 Plus 2.3 amended...
PocketZen was a whole lot of complicated...
Maybe I'll try 141...

Same for me, PhoneSuite installs fine but I cannot get the callerid to show - everything else seems to work. Will have to try again after a hard reset, perhaps there is a software conflict because I am using the same ROM as jj and his works fine. SpB in their forum claim the problem is because of 'unofficial' WM6 ROMs but that does not make sense because it works for some and not others.
I wonder if the carrier has anything to do with it. Would love to know if anyone using Black 2.5 on Orange UK has got PhoneSuite callerid working

To all of you guys with non-working WiFi in PhoneAlarm!
It's very simple to fix this issue. Just edit the registry key
/HKLM/Software/HTC/CommManager/SupportedFunctions=8
or run the REG-file from the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1211658#post1211658
As I understand the problem goes from the method of WiFi switching by PhoneAlarm. It runs CommManager and emulates stylus tap on WiFi switching button. I case of nine buttons in CommManager (five rows) PhoneAlarm simply miss the WiFi-button when tapping on it.

Man, I've had a time with these over the weekend. Using phonesuite with Palm threaded messenger. All was well until sound stopped working. Couldn't get any sound or vibrate with new texts, just pop ups. Uninstalled it, but still no sound. tried PhoneAlarm 141. Installed fine, imported old profiles and installed skin...soft reset, no icons:( . soft reset...then it hard resets itself. But not a complete hard reset, so of my installed programs remained, but everything else was hard reset.
After this (semi)hard reset, I restored to backup file from a few days ago with just phonesuite, still no sounds (they work when I select them, but not with a new message.
Finally moved from black 2.5 to custel 1.3. Reinstalled everything except phone apps. Sounds worked for while then nada.
Finally, out of desparation, I put 1.58 Lite version of phone alarm on and sounds are back, for now. Hopefully they stick.
These latests phone alarm betas are tough to kill. I think they may have corrupted files or something. Hopefully the total clean slate and using the phonealarm lite will hold me.

Can I ask all those people that said that Phone Suite was working ok and was showing the Caller ID if they had "Dialler extensions" enabled and could succesfully decline an incoming call and be prompted to send an automated SMS?
I can get caller ID with Phone Suite if I disable the phone skin using HTC Tweak.
This is really bugging me, as having the ability to screen calls using black and white lists and be able to decline call and have an pre-scripted SMS sent to the caller is exactly what I have been after for a long time!
Thanks in advance!

I can verify that, yes disabling the phone skin using htweakc does allow the caller ID to be displayed correctly however this prevents phonesuite from being able to filter calls. Upon trying both settings back and forth it seems you have to choose one or the other, functional caller ID or functional call filtering. Hopefully spb can sort this out instead of just blaming it on being unofficial wm6 roms.

This problem is very hit and miss. I was having the same problems as above but after a hard reset and re-installing all now works fine. The callerid works whether phone skin is disabled or not (when disabled it will display 'Incoming Voice Ca...', and when enabled it will display 'Incoming Call' - both show the callerid). Disabling the phoneskin does stop the call history icons from displaying though.
One thing I have noticed is that after phonesuite has installed it asks you to push 'yes' to soft-reset. If you wait and watch the screen, the background 'flickers' once after maybe 5-10secs , so perhaps the installer is still doing something. I tend to wait about 20secs after the message appears before tapping 'yes' to soft reset and have had no problems since - I have uninstalled and installed several times with no problems.
Worth a try for those having problems.
ps. phonealarm caused me to need to hard reset as it created a load of rubbish files on the device - including two pim.vol!!

I hope the intent of the thread was not only to compare SPB and Phone Alarm, but also to find the tool of this kind that works.
In short - I'll vote for neither one, but the PZP Tools (http://www.pocketzenphone.net).
I use my 8525 mainly to read BBconnect e-mails / SMS, calendar scheduling, take notes, listen to the audio books and of course make and receive calls. *Reliable* notifications, alarms, reminders and profiles are critical. So maybe I went overboard with it, but I have installed and working together nicely in tandem almost all mentioned before me.
SPB Phone Suite - I love the SMS/missed calls reminder which actually works *and* will override the system volume if asked to, dialer extensions are nice. Do not care much for Call Filtering, which seems to be conflicting / intercepted with/by PZPtools calls filtering or O2 divert profiles. All SPB tools are playing nicely together and I do not have problems with them as many people insist.
SPB Shell - excellent Now Screen saver, weather, time and photo dialer tabs.
SPB Pocket Plus - I have it embedded into one of the SPB Shell tabs. The battery indicator, close button, [alt+tab] mapped to PTT button, PTT press and hold mapped to SPB PP Close Button Context Menu, safe mode, duplicated notifications fix and *Repeating Alarms* fix.
SPB Time - many custom alarms, with large snooze / dismiss buttons - another working fix for M$ brain fart.
I also tested O2plus, but found that PZPtools work much better for me. I left O2 installed - i love the Last Call, Calendar, Shortcuts and running Programs today plugins, which I found to suite my today screen much better.
But the one of the greatest of the all additions I've found is PZPtools. It does excellent job on creating custom profiles, has convenient and no frills tray icon and skinable today plugin. With timed and CellID profiles switching it makes my Hermes not a toy but a tool. PZPtools switches to Loud profile as soon as I walk out my apartment building, then to Soft profile when I enter my office, back to loud when I am out for lunch, mute when I have a calendar scheduled meeting and quiet when I bring my Hermes to the bedroom. And the most shocking thing, agian - it just works ! I tested the call filtering just now on PZPtools and it seems to be working as well. Did anyone got it to work on SPB ? The ability to auto reply with SMS seems to be useful for meetings.

Phoneweaver is very good. In ways better than phone alarm. However, I had some issues with the sounds (no SMS sounds) which I think are from phone alarm residua. Next time I do a hard reset, I'll switch to phoneweaver...
Yes, i'm right with you. But the soft works well. It do the basics clear and fine.
Like this soft so much. It's not so complet that PhoneAlarm, but do the minimal thinks without any problem.
Recommends this soft if PhoneAlarm gives any problem.
Regards.

Oddly enough, I reinstalled PhoneSuite last night, and caller ID is now working. I got to thinking about some of the other posts and people who had it working, and decided to uncheck the disable phone skin setting in HTweakC (I don't use video dialing -8525- so I had disable the phone skin to use the smart dialer). Unchecked the box, soft reset, reinstalled PhoneSuite, soft reset, and caller ID works now!

That's it... I disabled the same option in HTweakC and reinstalled PhoneSuite and it's working great. Appreciate the help

Is anyone using this successfully with Black 2.0? I am stuck with using a Mac for a little while so I can't do an OS upgrade on my phone. If not, I'll just find a corner to cry in, and I won't bother anyone about it anymore ;)

Don't cry ... get PZPTools installed - as I mentioned. PZP filtering works for me on Black 2.0

Has anyone been able to get phonesuite's call filter to work in Black 3.01? I tried the fresh install and reboot. I tried the unchecking the 3G video dialer in pimp my black 0.2, doing the reinstall of phonesuite, and waiting for about 30 seconds before soft resetting, and it still doesn't work.

SPB released Phone Suite, SBSH is the developer for Phoneweaver ;)
SPB Phone Suite supports call filtering. But I prefer Phoneweaver, since I just want a decent profile switcher wich includes, cradle support, at night I want the GSM part turned off etc. SBSH Phoneweaver seems to do this best at the moment ;)

PhoneAlarm 1.60 is out (no longer beta). I've been running the latest betas without problems and the final release seems to be doing great. Give it a try.

I tried the final beta yesterday and had a weird issue with voicemail/missed calls not clearing properly. Could have been a network issue etc I suppose, but dropping back to build 148 cleared it. The only issue I had with Build 148 was the wifi activation not working, but a cab with a couple of reg hacks fixes that completely.
Will try out 1.60 final is due course.

Now using the final 1.60.
Seems a little shaky to me on first install, but I install my own theme and settings which doesn't help, but a soft reset (or occassionally two) straight away (PA says it needs one after install) and is up and running a treat on my Hermes. The wifi issue is gone as the option is in the config file to use the driver directly rather than via comm manager.
My timed profile changes all seem to work, so am a happy bunny.
