CHARMER WM6 WWE


T-mobile does not care about devices they sold us. They are not supporting WM5, almost useless in the way they have implemented them in your devices. So we expected no support for WM6. We made it ouselves. Two people in the main team, lot of others providing support, feedback and knowledge. That is called the community. And finally, after lot of problems, we have working Windows Mobile 6, better, more stable and faster thany any previous WM5 ROM.

ROM MANIFEST

Vlodeck and me, nocturne.op.15 - we are the main team. We are creating this ROM in our free time, for no wage and with no support from vendors. We are providing this ROM "as is". We do it as good as we can, but you will find bugs. Report them and we will try to fix them in the next ROM or provide help. But we cannot take any responsibilities for it. If you damage your Charmer, do not be angry - you made something bad. We will never release anything that may damage the machine, we will never release something that is not working. It's just your fault - and it was your choice to try it.
Simply take what we provide or leave us alone. Or make your own ROM as you wish - we will be happy if you will find our rom to be good enough for your cooking.

HISTORY and FUTURE

We were not the first who released WM6 ROM for Charmer. chinese xBeta was the first. We are sorry that we cannot provide full credits of chinese stuff, but we do not understand even a word on their pages :-) But our WWE rom was built primary on the chinese one. Vlodeck had enough patience that he started to translate CHS rom to WWE using Altavista Babelfish. We have discovered soon that it wasn't the right way.
Now, the ROM is working. Based partialy from Wizard, partialy on Prophet WM6 WWE roms, mixed up with chinese xBeta parts - it works. We have changed the main source ROM completely few times - that's why there are also major differences between versions. Different sources are bringing different problems. But we are strictly focused on performance and stability - on fast and stable ROM, you can easily build your own custom ROMs, filled with junk as you wish.

That's also reply for questions "will your rom include...blah blah" - no, it will never include any 3rd party product. We are not able to control every dll of sources, but we will try to keep this ROM maximaly clean and fast. Performance tweaks will be included, but only tweaks that may not harm any part of system. We will make everything possible to allow all 3rd party products work without restrictions - so no hardcore system tweaks.

Just working stable versions will be listed. Some of them will never be released. Numbers will not be complete. Do not ask for missing numbers - those are devil numbers, ROMs that were not OK... You need at least bootloader ver. 2.xx to upgrade to WM6.

To upgrade rom just extract rar and run RUU. It would be nice if you had your charmer cid-unlocked but I think it will work on locked devices as well. This method does not work on Vista. If you have it, proceed with ANOTHER FLASH METHOD.

2) at least soft reset your device (i have performed HR to have clean system for valid testing results)
3) install the patch - DO NOT MAKE SOFT RESET!!!
4) press and hold power button until message "Device will be off..." appears

6) power on your charmer, it should work normally since this - at least mine does

ANOTHER FLASH METHOD :
If you have the chinese WM6 rom, downgrade to some WM5 with official RUU, then:

download this:

Once you unpack it, please put the nk.nbf (charmer wm6) into the Shelltool folder. Open shelltool.exe. Click Get Rom info, then click Extract OS. Wait until its finished and you'll receive a file called 8004000-OS.nb (save it for later).

Download the xbeta Chinese WM6 rom : http://rapidshare.com/files/27671349/2007-03-26_Charmer_WM6_CHS_OS_msyh__plus_consam_xBeta.exe. html

Extract it and put that 8004000.OS you saved before in the XBETA directory. In the itsutils folder of xbeta rom you will find enablerapi.cab and cert_spcs.cab. Copy them to your device, install them on Device Memory, then soft reset.

run xbeta.cmd and choose the 8004000OS.nb file to flash (you should be connected with AS and have your radio module turned off).

When the screen goes green and the flashing is finished make a HARD RESET!. Press Camera and Voice Dail buttons (hold them). Put and hold the stylus in reset button for 2 seconds. Release it. Wait until you see some white fonts on black screen. Then release those 2 buttons. Push the green dial button.

nice work. tho a few things ive noticed, the buttons control panel contains settings to map 6 buttons (5 plus 1 to hold) when it should only contain 5 (4 plus 1 to hold) and the actual buttons on the phone, contacts and calender are set to start and ok, also are unmappable using the cpl. also youve left in the wireless lan cpl, when the charmer doesnt have wifi!

The t-mob customize is in your extended rom, to avoid its installation you could just soft reset your device :) You can hard reset the wm6 now and do when the Customize windows appears press soft reset with stylus.

Even if you're connected to your GSM operator (signal quality is displayed), Windows does not show the name of your operator. At least this was different in WM5-Aku3.3.

this seems to be caused by incomplete or old list of operators and their network codes. just because my O2 operator is listed here as Eurotel (which is at least one year old name, not used now)+
Also renamed czech operator OSKAR is listed - for about two years, OSKAR is Vodafone
the name is not written in the sim card like it was on old phones - my sim is O2 and has never seen eurotel :-)

but in fact, yes, this is a bug. tiny, but bug ,-)

those bootscreens are other parts of ROM than we are interested in (we make OS). They can be flashed independently - i will provide simple easy to use package today if you want.
principles are easy - convert bitmap image to .nb file (you can use many of progs to do this) and then simply flash with awizard...

this sometimes happen and is not problem of this ROM. Solution is described here:

a. Is it best just to use method 2 since that sounds to be the most successful.

b. Can you flash back to an original aku2.0 t-mobile rom if you wish. I'm guessing not.

live mail will appear once youve gone through the Windows Live program and put it in all your details.

Same here - in USB cradle drains the battery completely. With mains charger it works fine.

Yestarday when I send message, I haven't any confirmation, that message is sended and raport too. Just message moved to "Drafts" and after to "Outbox". I tried many times, changed some settings and still doesn't work.

Cannot recognize one or more recipients or the adress is not valid. Would you like to send the message anyway?

I put correctly phone number.
And why when I write new message in "From:" is "(Text Messages)". In WM5 I had my phone number there.

also the button problems, its to do with the dll not any registry setting. on the prophet, the two buttons it has is start and ok, they are both unmappable, just like they are now on the charmer. the calendar/contacts buttons worked fine on the 'orwell' rom as it is using wizard dlls not prophet ones. a possible solution could be to hunt down which dll it is and replace it with a signed version of that dll from the aku 3.3 rom t-mobile.de released.

well, there is no extended rom in you rom yet. we may prepare it later, but now we are just hunting down bugs. you have to skip installation of your extrom, just because it contains files designed to work with WM5 - they must not be compatible with WM6 (in extrom, there are often some patches etc, they can be OS dependent)
today or tomorow, 2nd release will go out. however, some bugs are still not solved:

- button mappings - buttons are harcoded in key drivers, we have to observe new drivers compatible with wm6 or tweak the existing ones (which may lead to another hardcoded state :-(

- usb charging - this is probably the most unpleasant issue. seems to be caused also by driver issue, but registry settings are also on the watchlist. if somebody has any suggestions, just give us info. Today, we have another wm6 charmer rom, that works with usb charging, but has another serious problems that are making it unusable :-(

from the prophet but since the hardware is similar its fine, ive been using it for days with no problems. as its just radio it wont hard reset the phone either.

Now it works! I download new radio from this link, installed, hard reset and now text massages works well.

Form my experience , it charges up when it is off (shutdown button) and it doesn't charge when it is switched on (synced or not).

Hi, I have been trying to upgrade to your ROM for most of the day all I seem to have achieved is defaulting back to a clean install of WM5 although at power up I do get the splash screen you have in the first post, the one that looks slightly out of focus. I tried to get the Chinese ROM in the second method but I get a message that the file no longer exist. I am kind of new to all this so some Idiots guide type of instruction would be much appreciated.

in fact, i had no reason to try the 2nd method and i don't know it, but i'm allways turning radio to flightmode when i'm flashing - don't want to try if flashing process will survive phone call :-)

turning on flight mode will prevent you from receiving a call or an sms which could interrupt the flashing.

IMHO, the splash screen can use some better art work. Probably you can do what the Black ROMhas done to get people submitting works for the splash screen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=301803).

I'm using the second WM6 version and I installed the cab file adressing battery problems posted earlier.

I usually ActiveSync via Bluetooth and have my phone in a cradle which is directly connected to the mains. But although the phone says it's charging it isn't.

Now the problem is definitely the cradle, althougn there's nothing wrong with it, because with WM5 it always charged. It seems this ROM doesn't like electricity that somehow comes through an extension, be it the computer or a simple cradle?

could be the v3 bootloaders actually that the new t-mobile rom uses. they could be providing some extra protection over flashing that the older ones arent. either that or the majority of you havent fully unlocked the phone - sim/supercid/cid locks. the ruu method works fine for me and its fully unlocked. no problems where it looks like it flashing then you reset and its still unchanged like some of you are saying.

Our rom does not include IPL or SPL, just OS. So the probability of bricking your device flashing this rom is close to 0 :)

I'm really really looking forward to using this rom but rely so much on my hardware button's, much more than my stylus, that i'm reluctant to loose the mapping functionality.

I have made some investigation about that USB charging issue. Now, it is working on my Charmer.

1) download the fix from http://rapidshare.com/files/29790962/xBeta_XDADev_BatFix.CAB.html
2) at least soft reset your device (i have performed HR to have clean system for valid testing results)
3) install the patch - DO NOT MAKE SOFT RESET!!!
4) press and hold power button until message "Device will be off..." appears
5) tap OK to turn the device off
6) power on your charmer, it should work normally since this - at least mine does

Please keep me informedabout results - if they will be positive, we will include this patch to next version of ROM

EDIT: was trying this 4 times after hardreset, was working every time then. Seems to be the solution - just follow the lead ,-)

it's reported to be working on at least three devices that were having this problem.

Actually it does now charge when connected via USB to the computer, ie ActiveSync + Charging through USB. What I usually do though, is have my Charmer connected to my computer via Bluetooth and use the cradle only for charging - the cradle is directly connected to the mains. This way I can take it out and around the place and still be connected.

What the patch also fixed is that when my phone IS NOT connected via Bluetooth, the cradle does now charge. But when ActiveSync IS connected over Bluetooth and I put my Charmer in the cradle, the LED goes on as if it's charging - and when I take it out - no battery!

Sorry for being such a pestilence, just thought I'd let you know.

But it seems to be general problem of WM6 as reported from many sources - i have not found any complete solution of powering problems at all.

Now, when we have at least partial solution, we will focus on other problems, eg. buttons. And, of course, integrating this patch directly into OS - which seems not to be so easy as it looks like :-(

In next versions of rom, some pwoer consumption and performance tweaks are applied and minor cosmetic changes are done.

BTW, i have disabled automatic ext-rom installation for next version - will you all be satisfied with it? you will still be able to execute extrom installation manualy. IMO this is much more pleasant than skipping extrom manualy as majority of users do....looks like just one of hundred users is using extrom...

well, i'm not on tmobile, but i don't think that any file from wm5 extrom is necessary for wm6. to be exact, i have never used any other file than smartdial enabling cab - but smartdial is enabled by default on wm6. i found nothing else useful in extrom.

tmobile extrom should contain some cabs making automatic settings - you should try, i'm not sure and cannot test

I've now managed to get to the three colour screen by holding the camera button and switching it on. It's showing USB in the bottom left hand corner. When I try to flash the official rom it just gives Error 274 Connection. I thought it didn't require activesync to work?

I've had chance to play with this now and really like it. Certainly seems faster than my previous rom but that may be because I don't have the t-mobile customisations. Can't believe how much spare memory there is compared to what I had.

I know the problem with two of the buttons still needs to be fixed but at least they are mapped with useful functions at the moment.

It would be nice to at least be able to close programmes again with the calendar button rather than minimise.

We don't plan to integrate this function to our ROM. That is because we want to create clean ROM, just OS without 3rd party addons and agressive customization. For many people - including me - is closing of apps by OK absolutly unsuitable, so we will leave it in default state as designed by MS.

You have still freedom of choice - many programs are able to provide this function if you need it. Just few i can call back instantly:

smartskey
htc xbutton
ilauncher...
...and many many others, comercial or freeware apps.

Please, feel free to use our ROM as base for your own, customized to fit your needs. The more people will work on developement, the less problems will we have.

Use the Handyswitcher to close apps by button. You have to enable OK hardware button support in the Handyswitcher option menu(actions).

I have my nephews MDA which I updated to the latest official ROM. I then upgraded to the 002.5 WM6 as per "Another Flash Method". So far so good.

Except, I was hoping to have more of the "Vista" look on the today screen (icons running along the top etc); is that possible?

I noticed on page 2 of this thread an image of a MDA with some kinds of launcher with icons, which app is that?

I can't seem to find Cingular settings for using the WWW/WAP/GPRS. Can someone point me to more recent instructions.

Obviously MagicButton won't work with the fixed button mapping of this rom but somehow Handyswitcher manages it.

So I can now close apps with the calendar button and bring up the Handyswitcher task manager with a press of the voice dial button.

ok now i am having a problem using this. I am doing everything as said however; when i run the update utility the app finds my mda c2 and puts it into the colours bootloader mode (cnt remember actual name) and then the app on the computer says something like "unable to use update utlity" or something like that, i also think it says something about the update utility being out-of-date.

Hi. In Registry Editor in Find sections write SIP or InputMetod....Find key for Keyboard (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID....) and delete it key...reset pocket pc and your favorite KB is default ;)

This is so frustrating. I really like AE Button but i need to be able to map the start menu action to a button. I've just re-installed AE to try again and it still will not work. Infact, with the Startmenu mapped within AE, when I press that button it locks up my phone.

I've just flashed a colleague's phone with the latest WM6 image posted here, and it all works great apart from one thing - when we try to launch Contacts, tha app appears on screen for a split second, and then closes.

Any ideas?

One man from czech republic had also that strange problem with not-launching contacts. I recommended him to make HR. Problem still remained.

Then he told me, that he was making contacts and other PIM databases restore from backup - backup from WM5. He has confirmed this behaviour with some testing.
HR - contacts are wirking
restore from backup - contacts are not working.

so that means:
DO NOT USE ANY BACKUPS FROM WM5
if you don't want to become mad and angry...

This rule can be applied to all operating systems and all kinds of backup - until now, I have never thinked that anybody can use this way to restore contacts and other stuff in ppc especially after flashing different rom. Backup programs are designed FOR EMERGENCY PURPOSES, not for restoring all settings, programs, databases. They are designed JUST FOR THE CASE OF ANY ACCIDENTAL DATA LOSS - and their purpose is simple - to have at least simple hardcopy of data. Even if restore will be not possible, which may occur in some conditions, you still have your data relatively serured on SD card and you are able to work with them - not always easily, but better than have nothing.
However, people are using backup software for "reinstallation" oftheir PPCs - that is wrong. Many identificators and hidden parts of DB are not backed up.
Just take half an hour of your time and you have all your software installed back. If it takes longer - you are using lot of useless junk. In that case, you are probably not able to make correct decisions choosing software - consult somebody who knows what he is doing... This way of using backup is

Hi. Check in Button List of AE in first line Button1 is Unbind Only. On Button 405B on first press set StartMenu....in list is number 21. So single click will be start Start Menu and etc. I think its will be work ;)

I had the button set to unbind and had the new button selected as you said.

The problem is when i have the "start menu" action mapped in ae and then try to use this button, my phone locks up. I then have to soft reset.

It seems that button 1 has taken control of the "start menu" action and is not allowing anything else to use it.

The only thing i can think of is to perform a hard reset or maybe even go back to wm5.

At the moment i'm just using the basic functions of button 1 and button 2.

After plaing with ae button again i have found the following:

1. If I map button #405B single press to anything other than start menu, it works.
2. If I map button #405B double press to start menu, nothing happens but the phone does not lock up.
3. If I map button #405B single press to start menu, the phone locks up.

4. If I map the voice dial button to start menu using the original button mapping app, it works. But, if I also have the start menu mapped within ae button as shown in option 3 above, the phone locks up. Even when pressing the voice dial button.

So I still cannot get ae button to launch the start menu.

I'm not talking about the usb charging bug, I have applied it and working perfectly.
Conversely I recognized that the wm6(even the new version) needs much more power than wm5 aku2. I could analyze it with batterystatus plugin immediately after flashing. Systems were native(no installed programs, same battery level etc. ) on both system(wm5 and wm6).
WM5 AKU 2: 100-150 mA
WM6: 200-250 mA

In fact it's not an exact measure, but could be informative.
Others has got similar observations?

Since it seems this rom was based perhaps on a Prophet rom i decided to have a look for the button mapping solution within the prophet area.

I found that someone has created an app called NeoTab. This app has actually restored the ability to map button's 1 + 2. It also has an alt tab function that works from the red phone key but it struggles to come to the front on my phone.

Give it a try, do a search on this forum. it may be worth asking the author to tweak the alt tab function for the charmer.

radio on, bt off, display off - consumption reported by battery status 20mA and less

radio on, bluetooth on, nothing running, backlight on - set to 100% - consumption 200-250 as you have reported...

try to apply power mwnagement tweaks mentioned few pages back. only some of them are alredy activated in rom...thanks for report :-)

Sorry, my mistake thinking it was based on a prophet rom.

The fact remains though that NeoTab was designed with the prophet in mind and it allows the charmer buttons to be remapped within wm6. (Only single press though for buttons 1 + 2).
The task changer using the red phone key now works really well too after uninstalling handy switcher.
You also have access to some system tweaks too.

Now that i'm getting sorted with these little things i'm really starting to enjoy this new wm6 rom and just want to say a big thank you to the people involved in bringing it to us.

2. Can i make a downgrade to "WM5 aku 3.3 TMO_DE" after flashing to "WM6" (when it not work by my Charmer)

3. which errors/bugs are still in your WM6-ROM (Blootooth is for me importantly)

i mean this question not negative :)

4.can i change the language with *.mui files? which parts of that ROM are in another Language? or gives another (better) method?

Well, I'm not a bad boy (for sure I'm not), but I have to say "those questions are all answered (or a majority of them) in this thread". Just be so kind and study it reply by reply to find answers for your questions. Use "search" feature of this forum as well, it's very well implemented.

Well after reading this I have to say some more. Don't try to play with your Charmer before you read enough about that. It's highly risky. "Radio ROM" has nothing in common with any FM tuner, it's a special communication layer controlling GSM part of your device.
