On a text box that you want to type in do the following. -
press and hold the "Fn" button and press the space bar, a box to the right will show with the options of XT9 English, ABC, LAnguage->, About XT9.

Choose ABC and your set, once I did this I never had to do it again since then. Been using Internet Explorer, sending txts, and using other apps without the XT9 popping up. Not sure if you have to redo this after a soft-reset.
