G'day Gents, I appreciate you may be pretty busy and all and have a thousand people asking you a million questions but I would really like to upgrade my phone without messing it up and after reading all the posts I think I'm there but could just do with some reassurance before I click yes.

I have the i-mate JASJAM on Telstra in Australia;
ROM version: 1.31.305.2
ROM date: 09/08/06
Radio version: 1.20.31.10
Protocol version: 32.52.7020.00H
ExtROM version: 1.31.305.103
running Windows Mobile Version 5.0.

I connect to companies exchange server 2003 for email, appointments, tasks and contacts etc and the only other software I have is Opera, everything else is as standard.

Now in summary I have downloaded and believe I should be installing;
1) Hermes_Radio_v1.41.00.10.exe to upgrade the radio, is this recommended?
2) Pro Black 3.exe
3) add-ons such as telstra.cab, WM VI Black Vijay555 Utils.cab, WM VI Black Update BT Drivers.cab, WindowsLive.PPC_ARM_NonBETA_NoDate.cab, and WM VI Black Esmertec Java.cab

Is this right?
Is it all in the right order?
Should I not touch the radio?
Should I only upgrade the radio?
My current setup is years behind right?
Would the upgrade be recommended?
Are there significant performance improvements in upgrading?

I appreciate you may not wish to be bothered by a newbie like me but your confirmation or comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Georgie Ross

You didn't read enough. Why does everyone start a thread asking whether they should do this or not and slip in the same questions about what's recommended? Dude, read the forum for a while. Seriously. After a bit of reading you'll see that you can change radio ROMS and test them until you find one that works the best IN YOUR AREA. There isn't one single radio out that will be the magic one. Just because it has a higher number doesn't mean it's the best. Same as the ROMS. Try a few. See which one, or "flavor" best works for you. You'll run into problems. Then search for the answer to that problem. you'll find it. The question you ask was asked 10,000 yesterday. :)

These new threads about what people should do should be answered with no posts at all. This is my last one for one of these damn things. Kill them with silence until people are forced to read for a while and learn.

Good luck chap. Happy flashing!

it all depends on what you actually want from your device...

if you want to watch foxtel on your device then you have to stick to the new telstra ROM released by imate...

if not then by looking at your procedure you have it down pat...

I'd say go for it. But there have been too many serious reported problems with Black 3.0/3.0.1.

The main question I would ask you is "do you need blackberry?". If the answer is "no", then I would suggest going for Black 2.5 - it is rock solid stable. I tried 3.0 and 3.0.1 and went back to 2.5.

Also, about the radio version, radio 1.41 has a lot of problems with most networks, but works very well for a few. It looks like this version is customized for certain operators. I would say, avoid radio 1.41. Go for radio 1.40 which has few complaints

As for the add-ons, well only use what you need. Anyway if you follow my advice and go for Black 2.5, most of the stuff is preinstalled.

In my case Black 3 is fast and stable (and beautiful!), everything is working perfect, it rocks in every way!!! No problems whatsoever.
I really don't think there are more problems than in previous versions...

Black 3 is SUPER!!!
(so go for it....)

If this is your first time flashing, I'd recommend going to 2.5. It's rock solid and stable and much faster than what you're using now. You will be surprised at how much quicker things will be for you with a newer rom. The bluetooth issues are keeping me from flashing 3.0+ until jj gets the kinks worked out and the flashaholics on this forum give it the big thumbs up. I usually like to wait for a few weeks after a new rom is battle tested by ppl with much more experience on this forum than myself so I can see the bug posts to determine if they will be deal-breaker issues for me. Since upgrading to 2.5, I've only had to soft reset maybe a handful of times, compared to at least 1x/day previously. I did not test LVSW or Custel.

As far as the radio is concerned, I went from 1.38 to 1.41, and it has improved battery life 25%+ for me.

Make sure you read everything in the Mr Vanx upgrading guide before you do it, and as everyone will tell you RTW (read the wiki) AND read all the posts of all the threads pertaining to upgrading and the rom you choose to use. Also, get creative when you search. Don't just put in a single phrase and come back and say I searched. Good luck.

My choice is 2.0. Since I flashed Black 2.0, it has been running fast and stable. Wifi works, BT works,...etc. Thanks to jj. Happy like a clam!

Really don't even need to upgrade or test any other ROM including Black 2.5, 3.0, 3.01...etc. The only thing that is luring me to consider Black 3.01 is removing the silly ClearVue PDF.

I recommend Black 2.0. I don't think I am missing out by not going to other versions, do I?
