HTC S730 ('Wings'): Has anyone spotted it already?

sting0r
22nd May 2007, 07:27 PM
It's now available on Tmobiles website:

http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Detail.aspx?device=acc8102d-4506-4eaa-bc2f-9c7b8ec1b1e0

I may walk over to the local tmobile store later and see if they have one. You thinking about switching from your Vox?

You thinking about switching from your Vox?
Yeah, I'd like 3G (even though it drains the battery much faster).
And then supposably there is the 2nd video cam and a GPS receiver.
The cpu is apparently a Samsung running on 400MHz.

Combined with the same form factor as the S710 it sounds unbeatable to me.

Ah, that's the "Wing" in T-mobile's shop and is a different model.
The S730's nickname is "Wings" :)
Here's a preliminary spec:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/devices/HTC/HTC-S730--Wings-322.shtml
The release date is July '07

Where are you located, I don't think the US version has all those capabilities....

Everyone keeps saying it is coming out, but frankly, besides a photoshop'd mockup of this, there have been NO, repeat NO pictures of this in any form. No one has reported seeing one, no fuzzy pictures, etc. Until we get some information about this phone, some pictures, a release of info that is credible, I think that it's no where near release, and more like a Christmas time release at earliest. Seriously, why release the Vox, and then something that will blow it out of the water less than 6 months after the Vox release? It will cannibalize it's own market segment. I hope I am wrong, but with no pictures, or info on it, I don't see it as anything more than a future release, and nothing sooner.

jockyw2001
23rd May 2007, 09:48 AM
Yes, it seems hard to imagine that they will release it so soon after the S710. However, there are different markets for both models. Don't forget that many users have no need for 3G, besides that the battery drains much faster. In that spec on pdadb.net it mentions only 12 hours! If that's true then many users are better off with the S710.

The Qalcomm MSM7200 chipset exists already since more than a year and does offer all those cool features. Usually mobile manufacturers need about a year to build phones around a new chipset. So from that point of view the timing could be right.

Here is more info about the chipset:
http://www.cdmatech.com/download_library/pdf/msm7200_chipset.pdf
http://www.cdmatech.com/products/msm7200_chipset_solution.jsp

Anyhow, I would love to test a S730 :)

D'you think the pic showing "active GPS" is for real or just a mockup?

GPS is a deal/no deal feature for me (in addition to the feeble battery... but as for the Vox there may be more powerful replacement batteries available).

Like for the Hermes there will most likely be a Wings100, Wings200... at least with different casing. Would a provider (like T-Mo Germany) be able to order units which are GPS hardware-deficient (lacking antenna, for instance)? For example, T-Mo Germany disabled (mechanically blocked!) the front videocall button of its "MDA vario II" Hermes variant.

How would one be able to tell if a specific S730 unit indeed has all necessary GPS hardware onboard?

The chipset seems ok, see here (http://www.cdmatech.com/download_library/pdf/msm7200_chipset.pdf). Don't know if other gps system components are built in.

Thanks for the link. Looks ok, indeed. Please keep me posted if you find a way to activate the GPS feature. Will a registry hack do?

Does anybody recall how difficult it was to enable GPS for the Trinity?

i have a pre prod S730 which is really nice, and has GPS. but it also has some bugs that would be awesome if they can be fixed. first, the unit is quite slow. second, it has real trouble reading the 6 gig microsdHC card (sandisk) that i have. i have the IE cache set to go to the card and it locks up all the time now requiring the battery to be removed. unfortunately i cannot figure out how to regedit the setting to go back to using the internal ram for the IE cache, which means i need to remove the card to surf the web. also, when plaing music from the card, the songs skip ... a song will play for some random amount of time (2 second to about a minute) and then WMP will go to the next song. last, when using GPS and google maps, i cannot figure out a way to get it to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340235 update locaton more often than once a minute, AND i need to use a second program (gps test) first to start the GPS chip and then i can start googlemaps and get a location. i think that all of these bugs can be fixed with a more stable and better rom, and i would love to help out, but i am quite inexperienced with rom issues.

I'm afraid the dump of part2 is not enough.

Please try this:
pmemdump 0x8c000000 0x100000 8c000000.bin
pmemdump 0x80000000 0x4000000 80000000.bin

The first dump give us the SPL. I will analyze to see if it contains mfg commands to be able to dump mfg config and misc config areas.

I haven't worked out (yet) to how dump the radio image and radio ram and rom config data. All a matter of time :D

does this dumped rom from a device with the gps enabled? if so, would it be possible to take that and compare it to the final rom, and turn the internal gps back on?

Can't wait for this thing.

Such a dump from a device with gps would have to include radio, bootloaders and configuration data. It will require a "SSPL" or "USPL" and some research to obtain all this, but it's certainly possible (provided the hw isn't crippled in the production models)

hi guys, i got my htc s730 last week and all i can say is what a phone. its only major flaw is the speed of the interface. in regards to the GPS. i dont believe it has built in GPS but after i installed googlemaps it was able to pin point my location, however it looked like it was using a 3G connection to do this. i didn,t know this was possible but maybe you guys could shed some light on the situation

Someone mentioned it already in the other s730 topic: some people complain about the fact that they have too few memory available when the phone is on. Some say they have about 7-12 megabyte available when they haven't even started an non-standard application and the phone says some applications will have to be shut down when they try to start other applications. Also some say the memory a program uses does not 'come back' when they close the program via the task manager which points to a memory-leak problem.

The reply was it would be fixed in tweaked ROMs or officially new ROM's, ok that will be true, but is it a real problem now? Does anyone experiences this problem here too?

zebra333
14th December 2007, 01:34 PM
Yes it's a major issue for me (at least).

I can't use the phone the way I used to use my vox and I need to make a choice between the application to run on the background.

More precisely I have to choose between having skype or IM+ (for MSN and AIM messenger) which is a real problem because obviously all my contacts are have different messenger account.

Hopefully a updated rom will take this in consideration and let more ram available for 3rd party applications.

I wouldn't hold your breath for an update soon from HTC. They've hardly got a good reputation for releasing ROM updates.

One example is the QTEK 8500 (StrTrk). Many U.S. customers (ok, they imported their handsets from UK) couldn't use the phone because of an idle/sleep issue. I don't even recall them ever fixing that handset, but Cingular released the 3125 which was the U.S. specific version of the 8500 many months later. Those US owners of the 8500 were left stranded.

I also don't recall seeing many VOX rom updates either from HTC, only ASIA versions.

The feedback on this HTC Wings/S730 handset within only 2 weeks of it's release indicates most, if not all, of the new owners disappointed with it, or crying out for a ROM update already, or a hardware hack to try and get GPS to work which would invalidate the warranty anyway.

I was undecided whether to get one myself before it's release, but since I've read all the 1st impressions on this forum I'm staying well clear. It seems it only offers 2 advantages over the VOX, slightly faster and 3G capability. Aside from that, I'd say the majority of VOX users who are currently overclocking their device wouldn't benefit much from an upgrade to the S730 unless they need actually need 3G for Video calls or data transfer.

Perhaps if a network provider adopted it and submitted some improvements, then I'll reconsider
