I am (along with 3 others from work) thinking of getting the trinity (HTC P3600) phone. The fact it is a pda and phone and has gps all in one is the main reason.

Because it is shipped with windows mobile 5 does the gps work straight from the box? (I have tomtom navigator 6 ready to go on it) Or does I need to download and install an upgrade on the phone/rom? Basically why do no specification charts mention the gps? See for example - http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_p3600-1694.php

I have heard that originally htc shipped it with the gps receiver in the phone but it was not active - they then relented and issued a rom upgrade which allowed it to be made active. Is this correct and if so why did they not originally ship it with the gps working? And also if so are they now shipped with the rom update so the gps works?

Can one get windows mobile 6 and put it on the phone? Why is it still shipped with windows mobile 5 and not 6?

Any help would be appreciated to a newbie!

If your get a device manufactured in April 2007 or later, you're likely to have WM5 with GPS out of the box. If it was manufactured before then, you have an option to upgrade it with official WM5 ROM with GPS support.
If you want WM6, check WM6 topic on this forum... It is not officially available.

I am in the market as well. I can't seem to find any white ones. My black one died and I am not going to reinvest in a device when the coating peels off.

Some dealers are saying that you have to update the ROM after purchasing. Looks like they have old stock. I think the new ones ship with the GPS ROM but I have yet to confirm this.

I am glad they don't ship with WM6 yet. There are some new features but WM5 is tested and stable and does everything I need. If I had Exchange 2007, I would want WM6.

All devices sold after February 2007 by Orange or Dopod should have the GPS enabled ROM.

Some dealers are still selling HTC P3600 with the original ROM, and a CD of the HTC update, but buying direct from HTC should get a genuine GPS ROM.

It beats me why most of the resellers still don't list GPS as a feature (even Orange, though they include a paper insert in the box advertising their [awful] online based Navigation system)

When the P3600 was first being tested, some users reported problems with 3G reception when GPS was active. HTC disabled the GPS while they investigated, rather than delay the launch. Orange and Dopod didn't apparently have any issues hence they were earlier with the GPS ROM. Some pre-production Orange M700's were sold to the public without GPS, but Orange have replaced them on request.
