Palm SMS Threader

I recently tried the Palm SMS Threader CAB, and it works great on WM6. I'm using JJ's Black 1.2, and it runs flawlessly. If anyone wants thier text messages in thread form, then try it out. :)

I couldn't get the CAB to attach for some reason. It's under 5 megs. Here's a link for it.

Note: For me all I had to do was drop the CAB to my phone and run it from there. It worked, and still works after soft resetting. However, there are actual steps to copy the files and over-write the Messaging ones in the ROM. The steps can be found in the Hacking and Developing forum if I remember correctly. If ya need help finding the steps I'll post a link from the treo forums. I'm using a Cingular 8525 on WM6, and it works great. -fin

Here are the install steps from another site. Like I said. I'm using an 8525 on JJ's Black 1.2 WM6, and all I needed to do was drag and drop the CAB into my phone. Open it and save it to the Storage Card, soft reset, and I'm all ready to thread!

I have found a bug when i use it in that the soft keyboard covers part of the text space which is a little annoying. Otherwise, its great.

Hmm. I'm not having that problem. What kind of phone do you have? I just checked mine to see if that was also happening, but wasn't. That's weird, but yeah, I agree, this little app makes text messaging a whole lot better to track what you say to somneone and when. :)

In case it helps anyone, here are the UK T-Mobile settings for this app to send/receive MMS:

Message centre number: +447958879879 (should pre-fill when you've got a signal)
Email centre number: blank
MMS gateway address: 149.254.201.135:8080
MMS URL: http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
Network profile: Default

Then don't forget to amend the MMS1 to MMS1old in the registry (see post above).

Do you mean the notification of when you get a msg? Start>Settings>Sounds and Notifications, drop down to recieve new SMS, and make sure no audio file is selected. :) Is that what you're lookin for?

Hi, I've been lurking around since I got my 8525 in December. I've flashed just about every flavor on WM6 ROM that has come out. So far, I have not been able to get Palm Threaded SMS to work on the two versions I've tried it on. I've tried it on Black 2.5 and Custel 2.5.

I'm currently running Custel 2.5 and have errors that read "cprog is not a valid program file" and "tmail is not a valid program file". When I have the cprog failure the radio does not work and I have to hard reset to get it work. With the tmail error every thing works normally except the mail/sms functions. I use SPB Backup to save me the agony of the hard resets but really miss the Palm threaded application. I loved it in WM5 and have considered going back just to get it to work.

By the way, I have followed all of the instructions in the Treo Central post referenced above.

Look for a single file named PalmMsgV001.
I'm not using that soft any longer, but if I remember well, it should be in \Windows\ folder.

You go to \Windows and find "PalmMsgV001". I think that it might be called Palm Vol 1 also. Anyway, copy it to your memory card. Flash your new ROM and then when you re-install SMS Threader just drop the file back into you \Windows Directory and voila your messages are back and you haven't skipped a beat. I do that along with PIM BackUp when I flash and then I'm up and running in about 15 minutes.

Did you follow the steps before using this app? You should've deleted any unread text msgs BEFORE installing. Check out the second post in this thread for a link to the installation steps, and go to that forum. They have numerous threads there on how to correct your problem.

I'm using an 8525 also, with WM6 Black 1.2 installed. I just dropped the CAB into my storage card and ran it from there. Soft reset, and everything works great. No problems. Just got the MMS working on it also, but still having issues on sending an MMS from the Palm Threaded app. It's easier to use the MMS feature already installed I found.

perhaps i wasn't clear, the "1 Unread Text Message" appeared about a week after i installed the application, but after my first soft-reset after the install.

So it's always there even when you try to view it? I've seen issues like that over at the treo central forums, but since it didn't happen to me, I never bothered to read-up about it any more. Wish I could help bro. I haven't encountered an problems with this app....yet. *knock on wood*

I'd suggest checking out those forums where they have a ton of support for this app. Someone probably already had the same issue and solved it there. Good luck, and hope you get it working. -fin

I dont know which rom you are using.. but this was an issue with one of the cingular roms.. i had the issue as well, but i havent had it since i flashed the latest cingular rom

well, my version of the palm threader mms doesnt work either, I get some type of "not enough memory" issue, and i know that cant be because i tried installing the app 1st right after a HR! A request for shogunmark ver please!

This is optimized for cingular and may not work with other carriers, but should be easy to change over..

Before installing you may want to use a task manager and stop POUTLOOK.exe and Tmail.exe, if these are running it COULD prevent a successful installation.. Installation may work better after a HR

also the original cab is over 2meg.. when i made mine i compressed it to under 550kb..

and 1 other thing, the reg setting should have this on "automatic" in the advanced tab.. if its not on automatic then change it, if its already on automatic then DO NOT CHANGE THIS (unless your not with cing/att)

Thank you for sharing, I did a HR but I installed my applications before installing this application. MMS is still no joy and I have played with it for about an hour. It is giving an out memory error and I have checked the device and I have around 23 -25 MB prior to starting the app. I also did kill Poutlook and Tmail.

ok unless someone can find a reg hack. The mms of the palm threader doesn't work with vp3g or lvsw variant roms, but it does work with blk 3.5 and possibly others!

On CUSTEL 2.5 people are getting duplicate text messages from me the same as before. I had to uninstall. :( Too bad because I really like this app, but this is the same problem I always have.

I have been thinking about trying a new OS. Maybe I will do that and then install this app first and see how that goes.

I have this issue and I'm running Black 3.5. I never had that issue running
Xda-Live Windows Mobile 6 though.

I just flashed from CUSTEL 2.5 to Black 3.5 and I installed two things then the SMS app. First was the keyboard fix and the second was the carrier settings cab. After that then the SMS app and all seems to be fine so far. Lets see though. :)

is an app like HTC X button, magic button, etc... what happens is people have the X set to close the app, well when you send a message and hit the X right away it closes the app before it can acknowledge it was sent, this cause's it to resend it a 2nd time in the background..

You did an excellent job with the cab, it was the cleanest install / uninstall that I have seen thus far for this application.

yea for some reason the threader cant be selected for one touch button use using the inbox or inbox1 neither works.
Im more concerned with getting the record audio function if theres a fix sending voice on the fly is cool if ya want to get a message through quickly.

I think what your asking for cant be done.. as the threaded app would need to take over the email functions as well... but not sure.. i would really like to get my hands on a treo750 and see how it operates, but without that im at a loss... i would definitely like to see all the messages in one place, especially email! Maybe when i get more time i will dig deeper into the treo rom itself, i didnt dig real deep as its structured a little differently.

Is very easy to customize, I just did it with my carrier Digitel GSM. I don´t need to reconfigure it each time that I reinstall all the system.

you shouldnt get charged while its connected AS LONG as its not transmitting or recieving data.. but then again i cant be 100% with tmo since i dont have them

i loaded the shadow rom today, and had no problems using my cab with it. You still have to set up your default connection's, but after that the mms with the threader works fine..

I have also confirmed it works (botth MMS and SMS) on shadow.

MMS does work on shadow. I have been testing it for a few days and I had no issues with MMS or SMS using the standard Inbox.

Hi, I've been lurking around since I got my 8525 in December. I've flashed just about every flavor on WM6 ROM that has come out. So far, I have not been able to get Palm Threaded SMS to work on the two versions I've tried it on. I've tried it on Black 2.5 and Custel 2.5.

I'm currently running Custel 2.5 and have errors that read "cprog is not a valid program file" and "tmail is not a valid program file". When I have the cprog failure the radio does not work and I have to hard reset to get it work. With the tmail error every thing works normally except the mail/sms functions. I use SPB Backup to save me the agony of the hard resets but really miss the Palm threaded application. I loved it in WM5 and have considered going back just to get it to work.

By the way, I have followed all of the instructions in the Treo Central post referenced above.

I am having the same exact problem. Upgraded to the new cingular/at&t ROM and this error message comes up as well as my signal going away and no ability to dial without the cprog error popping up. Worked like a charm BEFORE the upgraded ROM. I shoulda stayed put. Now who knows what there is to do. Frustrating to say the least.

Thanks everyone for the help with alerts I found it but it looks like I need something like Ringo in order to use an mp3 or wma for the alert because it will only use standard stuff.

I'll call T-Mobile and see if there is a charge for it and report back unless someone else has the answer.

yea i got the app working perfect on shadow i actually prefer the mms coming through this way love the previews and it seems to dl faster and more dedicated then switching to mms changing the connection etc. Very nice

my only peave is i have the infamous inbox 1 sms ...is there anyway of removing this without a uninstall.

You will not be able to use the standard Inbox MMS or SMS once you have the Palm Threader installed on VM6 1238. Then again, I am not sure why you will want to if you installed the threader. If you are looking to back to the standard Inbox MMS and SMS, then uninstall the threader and voila.

Yeah, you'e right. Just tested it and it works. The other CAB I used prior wouldnt let me use MMS with this app, but now on Shadow and this condensed CAB, it works like a charm! :)

i use resco explorer 2007.. copy to my storage card.. then do whatever like a flash or whatever.. then install the app.. make sure its closed out then paste the PalmMsgV001 back into \Windows\ and open the palm app and they are there..

edit the registry to rename HKLM/Software/MS/Inbox/SVC/MMS1 to MMS1OLD

I didnt do this in that cab mainly cause usually if i send an mms (very rare) it usually contains a mp3, i have found that this app will not send an mp3 (no it wasnt protected).. so i still occasionally use the original..

i use the O2 plus suite, has an app in there similiar to X-button, i just use that to close it... thats good enough to keep the phone from complaining :D

I did not test receiving MMS before. I just tried and it seems to be working okay.

thats an odd issue, are you trying to send 1 to multiple recipients or a different one to different people one right after the other?

Just a single MMS to a single person, but I notice that after sending a few, it sometimes gets buggy and will keep trying to "connect" to send, but it sits in the outbox and the connection bubble keeps poppin up. Weird huh. :confused:

Works fine for me, did you use the .cab specific for tmobileusa? I know it's dumb question but it's the one I used.

There's a newer version than that hanging around - I've got the cab for 2.3 and use it all the time (running well on shadow and use it to replce the crappy task manager buttons :)

Original cab from first post and the manual settings worked on my shadow rom install just fine. No errors. After reading the thread, I also would like to see some intergration of the text/mms back in the messaging view. I thought it was broken until I finished reading the thread. Does anyone have the AKU2.3+ feature "Send Contact via SMS" working with this Threader? When I try, I get control characters in the SMS app window in place of the actual contacts information. Seems strange that this would have with this app since Palm 750 is supposed to have this version of AKU. It would be nice if it still worked since I occassionally send contacts

Here my Issue first some Insight

I"m running WM5 Faria Rom 3.3 on a Tmo MDA

I have the Orignal SMSthreader.cab And I installed it

I cleared out my SMS folder b4 I installed. It was a successful install. I soft rebooted and when my phone booted up I had 1 txt message in the original SMS app. but all the incoming SMS go into the PalmSMSThreader app.....

I want my MMS and OUtlook to be set to the Hardbutton. I just want to get rid of the Stock SMS with 1 txt message. All it does when I click on it is send me the The palm Threader app. Love this App but If I can't get it to Work properlty I'll have to drop it. I read someone else had this problem.... any Fixes ?

Or am I looking at a Hard Reboot Plus re install ?

Is there any reason why copying back a PalmMsgV001 wouldn't work?

I have a 1.85MB PalmMsgV001 which I can't restore after a hard reset (when I click on Messaging the app doesn't even open!), but can when I do a "complete" restore of the device using sprite backup.

ive had a 16.5mb file and i am able to restore it.. the way i do it tho is thru activesync on the pc.. i install the palm app.. make sure it works.. remove poutlook from startup then make sure the palm app isnt running after the soft reset then on the pc...i browse to \Windows\ and drop it in there then soft-reset

hmm... the odd thing is, I CAN do a successful backup/restore if I create say 2 or 3 messages in the hard-reset "clean" device, copy it off, delete it off the device, check messaging isn't running, and then restore it. The procedure fundamentally WORKS.

I think in my case, because I had CE-Star (Chinese enabler) installed, when I tried to uninstall it (CE-Star), I lost access to the messaging application. When I then reinstalled CE-Star, the messaging application magicallystarted working again. So, trying to be clever, after reinstalling CE-Star, I backed up the SMS database, hard-reset the device, and am trying to restore the sms database (thereby successfully wiping CE-Star AND keeping my messages)

The thing is, I have never actually used CE-Star non-english text for any kind of messaging, so dont understand how it can be linked in any way to the sms database, and/or its restoration >:(

This is optimized for cingular and may not work with other carriers, but should be easy to change over..

Before installing you may want to use a task manager and stop POUTLOOK.exe and Tmail.exe, if these are running it COULD prevent a successful installation.. Installation may work better after a HR

also the original cab is over 2meg.. when i made mine i compressed it to under 550kb..

and 1 other thing, the reg setting should have this on "automatic" in the advanced tab.. if its not on automatic then change it, if its already on automatic then DO NOT CHANGE THIS (unless your not with cing/att)

There has been some incompatibility's with the lsvw roms, but that usually seems to come from sending MMS...

Confirmed for me at least.

I just flashed Black Majik and yes...my auto complete is now kaput.

It works for about 10 minutes after a SR before going out.

BUT, the auto-complete with the threader still works. BTW, I'm using the program you posted on this site.

I had that issue but not with the threader posted by Showgun. I had with the other threaders but Showgun's cab is the most stable threader I have seen thus far.

I may try a hard reset and load the Palm threader first and see if it happens. If not, I'll try to isolate it, though I suspect it is the threader. I had no issues with it before I loaded it on. Unless, it was a synergistic effect....program a and program b alone don't cause problems but when they run together...

I don't even know if that is a viable or possible situation with the hardware and software.

I know I'm probably reaching here but is there any way the mms can work on my 8125 with the HTC WM5 Rom. I tried shogunmark's install cab but no go. I did a HR and tried it again but nothing. I create a mms, hit send, but then nothing happens.

Everything else works great. I'm just trying to get MMS to work too.


How about the date format? Can't it be changed from dd/mm to mm/dd?

It comes with its own tmail.exe...
1st: it doesn't work!
2nd: if you uninstall, it deletes tmail.exe, the outlook messaging frontend and you have to install it again and keep it if you don't want to reset your PPC hard!

One thing/bug that keeps bothering me: as I use softkeyboard (my phone is a Prophet which does not have hardware keyboard), the softkeyboard always covers the area where I type the text message, so I cannot see what I'm typing (blind).

Anyone knows a workaround for this? Thanks in advance.

Second thing, it seems the previous WM standard SMS database is gone. I have more than 1500 SMS and now I have no clue how to import them to this new SMS app. Is there any way to do so?

Uninstall does not work for it. After softreset, the software is still intact.

There is a new notification sound for PALM messaging - not the original SMS received notification

ALSO, if u r threading a guy and he sms's you back, you will NOT get a notification, so close the thread (ie go back to inbox) if expecting a reply.

Finally, make sure you are not closing the app (ie put in into exclusions with your task manager) cos then u will get all sorts of bugs around SMS sending failing and incoming sounds missing.

Uninstall does not work for it. After softreset, the software is still intact.

From extensive thread elsewhere on this forum:
Softkeyboard issue is unavoidable - but it's worth the hassle
It uses a new database. You cannot import old. Apps that measure SMS traffic based on original db will also fail to count traffic
I think there is a way to remove it and restore tmail (which is still there for others that want to fire up outlook/pop mail directly). Look for the loooong thread on this topic elsewhere on the board - may have been under Universal

for those that use threaded msg and flash often like i do try the newer ver. of the ppc back up you can actually have it point to the PalmMsgV001 file so that it backs it up automatically every time (so you don't forget as i have done a multitude of times D'oh)

as so as for removal i have not had any trouble with removal and reinstalls using shogun's cab file.

i had to do it to a coworkers phone because he didn't turn off his radio during install and his g/f texted him like 5 times and ended up with phantom messages +)

I may just be overlooking something, but I installed Shogun's cab file and it combined my SMS and MMS accounts and I wasn't able to send an MMS. Has anyone else seen this?

I did recieve one nitification that my account wasn't set up for this (i.e. my AT&T account) which I thought was odd. Even though I have a Blackberry Unlimited data plan, when I had a treo 650 i was able to send MMS.

Even after uninstalling this wonderful app, I am unable to get MMS to work.

Are there any known issues with vp3g's 3.0 ROM, or with Blackberry Connect etc? Is there something I am overlooking?

which data plan (connection) are you using? wap.cingular or isp.cingular
you may have to change the connection (it defaults to using medianet/wap.cingular)

I just double checked...MEdiaNet access point name wap.cingular. should I be using isp?

I have also noticed that with BbConnect, the BbConnection is suspended when browsing outside of the BbBrowser etc, so I'm not sure if the provisiong of BbConnect, which I have to have for work, is impacting my network access.

wap.cingular goes through their proxy and is usable by both PDA and smartphone accounts. If you are able to use that dataconnection with the internet then it should work for mms. go ahead and check the options under mms-->menu, advanced, edit. It should have the Message center number et cetera. Network profile should be set to your active data connection or default. See if changing it helps send.

yea it works on wm5 8125 thing is u need to over-write the files in \windows\ u cant just install a cab file.. tried doing just cab on my buddies 8125/wm5 and it messed up so both txt apps worked.. the way to do it on wm5 is to extract the files then over-write the ones in \windows\ and soft reset.. make sure the standard txt app is closed first tho. also use resco or windows explorer to over write

Anyone know how to edit the PalmMsgV001 file? I opened it up in notepad, but it displays a lot of symbols along with the sms messages. There are a few conversations that I need to add in from the original messaging app, and since it doesn't seem possible to do it any other way, I was hoping to enter them manually.

People stated that it works with Schaps 3.57, however in Shaps (and many other like Black Majik) the MMS and SMS application are merged.

How will that work once the threaded SMS application is installed?
Will SMS go in one new threaded folders, and MMS stays like what they are now?

Also, is there a way to backup the SMS from the threaded application easily?
I've been flashing a few ROMs lately, and currently I use PIMBackup, it's great to restore all my SMS at once.

Okay, I installed the CAB mentioned in the first post, then followed the instruction there http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=139379
(basically move all the files from \Program Files\Palm Messaging to \Windows)

This was a very bad idea: I mentioned earlier in the thread I got a few errors after reboot : cprog.exe isn't a valid PPC program, same for tmail.exe etc...

I manually deleted all the files I had earlier copied into Windows. and I'm pretty much back to the original state.

This CAB can't be uninstalled :( Can only mark it as removed but all the files installed are still there and the today plugin too.

What would be the way to really uninstall this stuff ?

Is there a windows mobile 6 installation procedure? obviously the one mentioning to copy all files to Windows is a really bad one (or not for WM6)

Well, I re-installed the application, and didn't follow any of the installation guide, and it works fine.

Finally, make sure you are not closing the app (ie put in into exclusions with your task manager) cos then u will get all sorts of bugs around SMS sending failing and incoming sounds missing.

if you have the HTC X-button hack, you can select which programs you want to keep running exclusively.

It's quite simple really. Go to start > settings > sound and notifications (on personal tab) > notifications (tab) and select "Messaging: New Message (Palm...)" in the box, then put in whatever notification sounds/features you want for your text messages.

I'm running it on WM6 (Black Satin) and I love it. Also running it on a Wizard WM6 ROM (NBD 7.3) with no problems.

I used to have it running under an XDA Live WM6 rom and never had a problem with it. The palm app didn't have to be running for txts to be received.

Then when I moved to Black 2.5, I started missing text messages. I discovered that if the app wasn't running, an incoming txt would wake the phone up, but it would never reach the palm app and there would never be any further notification. About 2/3 of the time. The other 1/3 of the time it would wake the phone up, start the palm app, and notify me of my message just fine. Strange. So I put the palm app in the startup folder and made sure to always leave it running.

Now I'm on Black Satin and I only tried it once with the palm app not running, and it worked fine. But I guess that doesn't say much considering the experience with Black 2.5, so I still leave it running all the time.

Same here. Actually, I use the Shogun version of it (much smaller footprint). Works great for SMS on my WM6 Black Shadow IV ROM. I don't do MMS's so can't speak to that.

Okay, most of my problems are gone with the CAB from shogun ; the original CAB attached to the first post gave me nothing but troubles:
-Notification sounds now works.
-Can uninstall
-Can send MMS (with Orange)

Cool app.

One thing is bothering me though.

I have set the address book to show as First Last
However, when typing a name, in the SMS apps it shows as Last, First. Is it possible to change this?

go back and re-read my post. Ensure you have the SMS app running. Then go to Start\Settings\System\X-Button. Select first tab - Running. thats my biggest complaint about it... i think by default its set not to send mp3's... hopefully the one from the wm6 rom has fixed this...

You know, when you are talking on the phone you can not type a message because the numeric keys stay numeric keys while you are on the phone trying to use this app. You have to use the on-screen keyboard.

thats a very good question... that was something in the cingular oem wm6 rom that would allow the keys on the keyboard to function for calling.... hmmmmm.... i will look into that after i know the app itself works well with minor bugs...

Right now I am using the official/unofficial WM6 rom, and I am also using the Palm Threaded app, and I still have the MMS app that is built in, which honestly I have no problems having the two apps, if they worked. I can send text and pix just fine with the Palm app. My issue is the built in MMS client, when I send from my camera, I take the pic hit the email icon and it brings up the app and when I click send, it starts to look like its gonna send, and then the message gets this little clock and never sends, and eventually gives me an x saying that it failed. So when I restart the phone and try to send from the MMS app it works a few times, but then does it all over again and I got to reset. So here are my two questions, 1) Has anyone else seen this, or heard of it ? 2) Is there anyway to get my camera to send the pic to the Palm app?

i have the previous shogun threader .cab and find it neat. i really did not think much of it besides the coolness of having to send txt msgs. like you were chatting..

i was in a boring meeting today and thought id entertain myself by sending txt msgs to buddies. i then found one flaw with the sms threader. when i use either input method (keyboard, letter recognizer) to reply to a msg. the letter recognizer/keyboard covers the msg. screen so i cannot see what letters im pressing/writing.

has anyone have the same problem? will i have the same problem with this current SMS THREADER?

I solved the Issue... I located "PalmMsgV001" In my Windows Directory After uninstall. Once I deleted the "PalmMsgV001" After I Uninstall and then re-install the cab It works Like new now ! GREAT STUFF !

I have found a bug when i use it in that the soft keyboard covers part of the text space which is a little annoying. Otherwise, its great.

Is there a solution for this? Using the T9 input it's completely covered. :(

Below are settings and setup that works for me. don't do much mms bit the sms works just fine.
1) run the .cab, Soft Reset.
2) edit the registry to rename HKLM/Software/MS/Inbox/SVC/MMS1 to MMS1OLD, Soft Reset. Otherwise you still see MMS if you click your email hard button a second time.
3) Go into new SMS app, Menu, Options, Advanced:
Msg Center#: +13123149810
Email Center#: 121 <--this lets you send sms's to email addresses
MMS gateway address: wireless.cingular.com
MMS URL: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Network Profile: MEdia Net
4. Delete Start Menu/Programs/Inbox(1) folder.

I have an odd problem with the threaded SMS app and only hope that someone here knows how to fix it.

With one contact in particular (there might be more but I've never found them), my outgoing texts are only received if I send a text OUTSIDE of the thread. I have to start a new text and send it. If I reply from within the thread, the text is never received.

Every other contact that I've tried has worked perfectly. If I set the threaded app to never thread the texts, everything works fine as well. It's just when sending a text from within a thread to one specific contact.

I've tried deleting the contact and re-doing it, but no luck. On the other end, they've tried two different phones (a Fusic and a Touch) and the problem is the same on both.

I love the app but have just got a new phone and it has a vga screen and the emotions are so tiny you can hardly see them and I love using them (what can I say, it must be a girlie thing!)

From what I can tell.. it would mean ripping it apart and rebuilding it, replacing the emotes with higher res ones..

I dont know if you could do that.. or if there is anyone around willing to try.. (Im not a programmer..)
