Thanks for this post. Am considering getting a couple of these. Just curious if anyone has one and if it'll work without taking the phone out of the case. I guess I'm lazy. ;-)

Hi,

That one looks really nice !!!

I was interested on this one:

http://www.expansys.es/p.aspx?i=146664

but when I was going to buy it, I found this one:

http://www.expansys.es/p.aspx?i=149396&asource=146303

I like it because I could connect the Athena to car power directly, not taking care of the cable.

The one you are showing now is very similar too (but without the cable....).

Could be great to have them all and test them for few days ...... :)

Best regards,
Alberto

Thanks for the info.

Are the buttons easy to get to? I notice the brackets on the side from the pics.

The brodit Proclip is already available with a charging cable. Have to be careful "active" to proclip usually means it has an amp and speakers in it.

Not sure - looks like it might be a good solution but suction mount to dashboard? Never had much luck with them.

I always wondered why people raved about Brodit mounts (as they aren't cheap) until I bought one for my Universal. They are very well made and I think I'm going to have to get one for my Athena!

I use the HR holder and tower mount which sucks on to the windscreen, the ones that go on the dash are not too good as you need to stick down a self adhesive disk (supplied) but it won't come off without damaging your dashboard.
Alternatively I can use the HR holder with the excellent Brodit Pro Clip I have in the car, this provides the best solution, although you cannot clip on the keyboard. To be honest I wouldn't use the keyboard in the car anyway. - Mike

I agree re Brodit. However, I have been waiting nearly a month for mine, which was supposed to have been delivered 3 weeks ago....

im planning on making a small adapter for the HR mount i tested the magnetic strength if you put the keyboard at the bottom it does stick fairly well... so im gonna try to make something to connect the contacts...

I got my device holder today from Proclipusa. It is real nice. Works great with the keyboard or without keyboard. Keyboard is securely held on. Buttons on front and side are easy to use, usb and sound ports are easy to get to. Looks much better than my wood prototype holder. $34.95 USD.

A while back I had a great car holder for one of my HTC phones. It came with a built in charger. The built in charger charged my phone in the same way as if it was plugged into the wall. Not the slow slow slow charging method currently used for my x7500. Does anyone know of a car charger that will do this for the x7500/Athena? I want to order my car mount but really want the rapid charger or whatever it's called. If you know of one and it's not too much trouble, please provide a link. Thank you.

I just ordered the Brodit charging holder from GPSforless - hope I don't have to wait - mind you my car is in for repair at the moment as it was p!ssing out petrol so the brodit might still get here before I get my car back....

Use one of these between your current car charger and the Athena. I get 10% charged every 10 minutes with it. I bought 5 of these and have them everywhere.

If you're replying to my post, I don't see how a simple adapter will increase the charging of my device. I have the retractable cable but not the adapter. They are both just passive and don't decrease charge times for the devices. I'm looking for something that will charge my device in the same manner as it charges when plugged into a wall socket at home. I had one of these for my Universal and it charged my phone extremely well in the car. I just found the maker of the cradle I used in my car for the Universal. It's at http://www.carcomm.nl/

This one has a rapid charger built in so it essentially charges the device very fast as if it where plugged in to the wall at home. Hopefully they sell just a rapid charger by itself.

I would have thought the same thing. However, the pin out in the phone is different for charging via the wall plug than charging via the USB on a PC.

So if you use a USB car charger with 1 amp output, instead of the .5 amp, you WILL get much faster charge times.

I see what you mean. The reason I replied as such was because the link took me to just adapters. Let me make sure I understand...are you saying that the cables in the link you sent me have a different pin out so it'll allow the phone to charge faster or are you saying I need to get a 1 amp car charger "plug"?

I have this active holder installed in my car. So far I'm very satisfied with it. Secure grip, and you can easily rotate between ladscape and portrait-modes.

Also no force on the power connector - no dangling cable.

This solution appeals most to me.

I've tried all available holder for HTC Athena (Herbert Richert and Brodit)
and the best of all is definitly this one
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=7040

I've mount it on the windscreen, it is so small, so class, no vibration at all and very solid magnetic hold for the Athena.
I was expecting it to be the worse as the Athena is ~360g but the Athena didn't move at all during driving.

Very easy to put and take out, and specially you don't see this huge holder on your windscreen or dashboard when your Athena is not inserted.

I love it

HI there. No, you must take the main unit out of any case you may use as the holder is made specifically to fit only that unit.

But unless you drive off a cliff or something the unit will stay securely in the holder.

I disagree - the idea of having a heavy phone held in place only by a magnet, particularly if you have an accident or have to brake sharply..... I'll stick with the Brodit, which holds it on three sides and charges at the same time.

You can still disagree, I don't really care ....
Did you tried it?? I guess not, so you can't really comment.
I tried them all, the brodit included ...
I was thinking the same way like you, but after trying it I was really amazed by the way it holds the Athena, very solid.

Also if you have an accident, which I don't wish to nobody, no matter where and how the Athena is hold, it's not gonna stay in place, it depends also on how brutal the accident is.

As for braking sharply and driving sporty, I did some test yesterday and I still confirm it does not move by 1 inch, you have to try yourself to believe it.

Personally, I don't like the fact that it's charging the device all the time when mounted. Even if new generation batteries are supposed to deal ok with that, it still not very good to do it as it shorten the battery life.

I won't comment on the Brodit vs other solutions as I have not tried others.

But as to constant charging I must elaborate a little bit:
My version of the Brodit holder comes with a sigaretteligher adapter that fits the sigarettelighter/charger in the car. If I should not wish to charge the unit while it is in the holder I simply unplug the adapter and coil it around the back.

I guess both are OK but I have only tested one of them.

Personally I do not see any use for attaching the keyboard as long as the unit is mounted in the car.
I previously owned a HTC Universal and never found a particular need to use this device's integrated keyboard when it was carmounted.
TomTom only recognizes the OnScreen keyboard anyway and I have other 3rd party SW that makes looking up contacts easy via Voice or large OnScreen keyboard.
I also prefer the fixed chargepoint on "my" holder.

But as with most things it is a matter of personal taste...

Can confirm whether the Brodit charger/mount does the USB trickle charge, or the fast charge connection?

This post seems to indicate it is a fast charge and not the trickle/sync connection:
