View Full Version : Does SDHC work after WM6 update?

Hi guys,
I need to get a bigger microsd card, but i would very much like to buy (and use) the new sandisk 4gb micro SDHC. I read in another (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294648) thread that it might work after WM6 upgrade...
i've also read this (http://www.bsquare.com/about/story.asp?PressID=451) press release stating that new drivers are available also for the omap850...
Can someone confirm wether or not a 4gb micro SDHC works after the WM6 upgrade?
thanks!

no, wont work. there is different sd-reader HW. You are asking questions like if i can play DVDs on my CDplayer after firmware upgrade. NO IT WONT.

I don't think you've read the pages i linked to. The first is a thread here on xda-dev. where someone tells us that the upgrade to WM6 brought sdhc to the trinity... so that would tell us it is not a hardware thing.
the second link tells us about a softwarestack to bring sdhc to (among others) Omap850 ... so that's why i would like to know if someone that has actual hands on experience with the combination WM6 & sdhc cards could tell us if it works, instead of someone just bloating without looking.

Regarding Trinity: The Software upgrade also brought GPS to Trinity. So GPS is only a software thing??
I guess Trinity has already SDHC compatible HW chip inside, just the SDHC drivers were missing.

Well, and why do you think Artemis has no SDHC compatible chip inside? Are you an insider? Recall please,
HTC has not ever declared the fact that Trinity has got SDHC compatible chip inside, either. Moreover, Trinity can not work yet with SDHC cards running officially issued ROMs installed.

as far as i understand, they are speaking about drivers for CPU beccause as i know OMAP, Marvele.... are CPU's. So it means that those drivers will be able to communicate with CPUs mentioned in that article and SDHC hw. Still we are on the same point, if U have cd player it wont read DVDs. Other thing is if Trinity has SDHC hw. but i dont believe so. It will be unreasonable expensive for htc to built it. You can argue that Ericcsson T10 and T18 were the same except for active flip and vibrations, but the reasson then, was in amount t10 and t18 sold(or expected) and price of changing or making another line. I could believe it in case that htc already presented Arte lookalike with SDHC supp. but in this case i simply dont. BTW as i remember, Trinity was presented in betas with GPS, and when it was launched it was widely known that it has GPS chip+antena, but they launch it without drivers because there were some troubles with comm between drivers and chip and OS, and it will be too expensive to delay launch of trinity even if it was w/o GPS
esackbauer: in this case was GPS only SW prob. (btw i like beer too)
nemo8: do you think that if you can enable SDHC only by new drivers, here will be numbers of those drivers in beta versions for downld?With 10-50%functionality? For ex. at least using those drvrs u would be able to read directory tree? i believe that yes.
HTC has not ever declared the fact that Trinity has got SDHC compatible chip inside, either. - i dont have trinity but can U give me link where u found out that it has SDHC hw? DOes it have SDHC supp on cooked ROMS?

From wikipedia:
A new SD format, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity), allows capacities in excess of 2GB (4GB to 32GB)[10]. SDHC uses the FAT32 file system which supports the higher capacity instead of FAT16[11]. It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing[12]). SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.[13]
All changes are in logical access. According to this, driver change could allow to use SDHC card in devices.

DOes it have SDHC supp on cooked ROMS?[/QUOTE]
Yes, it does have SDHC support on WM6 ROMs cooked by two talented ROM-creators, whoose nick-names are mun and lvsw. I have seen it with my own eyes(it worked successfully with 4G miniSDHC). And therefore I hope p3300 also would be able to support this card format running WM6 OS. The new driver might have been included into officially issued WM6 ROM. We just need someone to check that.

OK then i appologise, it will be perfect to have sdhc supp on artemis (if u check size of W-Euro map for tomtom - some 850mb) it will be marvelous. I never heard of making sd devices working with sdhc, but if you've seen trinity working with SDHC i simply believu You. btw i think trinit was released before arte(month or two) so there is a chance to have same sd hw. Sorry again, that i didnt believe it.

I extract the WM6 ROM and it does have a folder called OMAP850_SDHC.dll. I will try to extract a WM5 ROM to see if what is included there. Staytune...
I do want higher storage SD and do not want to buy a SDHC unless it works. 100 bucks can buy a lot of beer man.

The DLL file you are talking about has nothing to do with High Capacity SD, the SDHC in the filename stands for something else (i forgot what exactly).

A couple of weeks ago I asked this question of HTC support and they told me the WM5 SD card update would enable SDHC cards to be used. So I downloaded the WM5 SD update from the HTC site, bought an 4GB SDHC card, and tried it. The Orbit did not recognise the card. I have sent another email to HTC support.

I've got this reply from HTC a couple of weeks ago.
Our apologies regarding the FAQ, it is currently incorrect and the department who is in charge of the website has been informed.
The FAQ should state that we support up to 4GB with SD cards and 2GB with Mini and Micro-SD. We do not currently support SDHC/2.0 and as such we could not say as to whether these formats would work correctly with your device.
So as to repeat your question on capacity briefly, your HTC P3300 is supported for use with up to a 2GB Micro-SD card.

Hi..
I am Yeongmoon Son living in Korea
I have O2 XDA Orbit which is upgraded into WM6
I tried SDHC driver on my PDA
It seems that the driver works.
But I have a problem:
Wireless LAN doesn't work while SDHC driver is installed on my PDA.
When I click on WLAN button in Comm Manger of my PDA, PDA seems to try to activate WLAN I/F (Waiting cursor apprears in the middle of screen for a while). Nevertheless, WLAN is not activated.
I removed the SDHC driver from my PDA. At that time, WLAN does work.
How about your PDA?
Could you do me a forvor to tell me how your WLAN operates after installation of SDHC driver on your PDA?
Thanks

My SanDisk 4GB microSDHC does not seem to work (Settings->Memory->Storage Card show 0MB used, 0MB available - any tools known to show SD card slot contents and/or format SD??????????????!!!!).
I can confirm, that WLAN does not work until I uninstall the driver. I'm using the WM6 ROM from O2 (german).

The problem is not the 2GB microSD cards... Artemis never had problem with these.
The problem is to make microSDHC (bigger that 2GB and up to 32GB) to work with Artemis.

I wasn't getting at any of the excellent people who are helping us by cooking enhanced ROMs, merely commenting that it doesn't look too hopeful that we'll ever get SDHC working on our Artemis's.
The extract below explains the problems with full-sized SDHC compatibility but this also applies to the micro-SDHC issue.
The SD card access protocol uses byte field addressing whereas the SDHC controller requires block field addressing. As it says below, although minor, a firmware upgrade is required to enable this change (which is more than just the operating system or drivers).
FAT32 is already needed to access any address above 1gb, so this alone isn't the issue, the real problem is the firmware of the SD device IO controller which doesn't currently cater for block-mode addressing..
So, I fear, unless HTC release an actual firmware upgrade for the device hardware controller, we're not going to see SDHC working on our Orbits or P3300s.....
Quote from the SD standards organisation:
"A new SD format, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0), allows capacities in excess of 2 GB. SDHC uses the FAT32 file system which supports a higher data density than FAT16. It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing), thus theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2048GB. SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.
Compatibility with 2 gigabyte and larger SD cards has been poor, due to the SD/MMC protocol's using a 32-bit address field denominated in bytes. The SDHC standard addresses this limitation by using 32-bit block addresses instead. Both SD and SDHC are traditionally accessed as 512-byte blocks on 512-byte boundaries, so the change to host software or firmware is minor but required. Before SDHC was standardized, various manufacturers "extended" the SD control block fields for their 2 GB and 4 GB cards in different ways. Those cards are incompatible with many SD and some SDHC devices, as they conform to neither standard. All SDHC readers work with standard SD cards."

This (and the tendency to move the most hardware functionality into software) suggests that SDHC support is a question of the right drivers.
Are there any proven successes in trying to get a SDHC card working?

I haven't tested whether it actually reads AND WRITES all 8GBs, but I assume it won't..I'm using the SD CArds to backup my Computer before I reformat because my DVD Burner doesn't work..I will test it but it will take a while..Is there a way you/ or someone can make sure it reads and writes above 4GBs on a Samung i730, or is it already supposed to do that? no, wont work. there is different sd-reader HW. You are asking questions like if i can play DVDs on my CDplayer after firmware upgrade. NO IT WONT.
Actually, there was an HP CD-Burner that could read DVD's after a software hack.
I don't remember it clearly, but I think they had the DVD-lens in the burner, but blocked the DVD reading part. Because of some license problem or something. And that happens often.
And this kind of questions shouldn't be WRONG, because if he hasn't learnt it until today, he should learn it RIGHT NOW. :)
EDIT: I didn't replies to this guy's message, so don't read this ;)

I have installed the X500 driver on my Toshiba and it can read the 4GB card fine but the 6GB card shows as 1.7GB (even with 5GB of data on it) and cannot be written to. Although you can read the files fine.
So I'm not sure if this is a problem with the card and driver or specific to the G900. Anyone with any device using this driver using a 6GB card ok?

Hello: Newbie here.
How would I try this and how would I undo it if it doesn't work?

Download the cab file, and transfer to you device. When you install the cab file, You can remove it from the installed programs.

Can't get the 6GB card to work with my xv6700 either. Is there any chance of the sdhc cab being updated to work with this card. Sandisk is supposd to come out with a 8GB card by the end of the year and it would be great to be able to use either if we had an update for our phones.

I got it to semi work in my Ipaq 2755. It will read my 8gb card but it only see 4gb of the card.. don't know how to get the hole 8 yet. Also it cause the wi-fi to not work.. every thing on mine works except that.. but I don't use it any way. I am going to list things I saw wrong I found with the PDA viet Rom. some one else can list if for the 4PDA one.
1. The WM player will not work that well.. was told this is due to codecs problem
2. The windows live doesn't work off the bat - you have to download another one to fix this.
3. SDHC is not supported at first you have to down load the drivers (yes they work) but you lose wi-fi if you install them (this must be a bug or a fix is needed here)
4. Contact and calendar don't work at first it just flickers or you can't store dates and time and etc (you must do another hard restart) a soft one will not do to correct this. - in other words it must tell you it is formating.
5. Blue tooth has a issue - you must download the driver for this.
6. Some people have report that active sync keeps alive even with disconnected causing the unit to discharge and die. Even when off. There is a fix at HP site for this not sure if if works on WM6 though.

Really don’t get it.
Updated my Artemis with a Dutch rom found on de HTC FTP site and while looking at the registry found the following keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Active\59]
"Hnd"=dword:008ebe40
"Name"="SHC1:"
"Key"="Drivers\\BuiltIn\\SDHC"
"BusParent"=dword:00032690

"CardDetectSysIntr"=dword:0000001d

"ControllerIRQ"=dword:0000001c
"Prefix"="SHC"
"Dll"="OMAP850_SDHC.dll"
"Order"=dword:00000021
Does that mean it does have a SDHC driver?
Can’t verify if this works because I don’t own an SDHC card nor do i understand the registry keys.

Nope, sorry, the SDHC in this dll filename stands for SD Host Controller as opposed to SD High Capacity

Nope, sorry, the SDHC in this dll filename stands for SD Host Controller as opposed to SD High Capacity
Except that the problem with getting the Artemis to recognise SDHC cards, is that the SD Host Controller needs to be changed so that it will work in block mode addressing instead of byte mode addressing, which is what High Capacity cards use, so the SD Host Controller drivers are exactly what we will need to upgrade eventually, when someone finds a block-mode host controller driver that works on the Artemis......

Indeed! Big Thanks to Bepe, he has solved the puzzle! Now we can use big micro sd cards with our Artemis!!!
you can download bepe's rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340748
or you can use Meschle's new rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342298

Yes - I can confirm. I've tried both Bepe's ROM and Meschle's 3.01 ROM and my 6gb SDHC card works fine with both......
You just need to ensure that you remove the SDHC card before "flashing", as you can't flash a ROM with the SDHC card inserted.

Silly question I think. Does this one sdhc.cab file fix the ability to use a 4gb micro sd memory in the Samsung i760 by any chance? Or does the Samsung have it's own unique cab file? If so I can't find one.
Thanks, jEff

I used the sdhc.cab to get my iPAQ rx5915 to recognize a Sandisk 4GB SDHC card. The only issue was that after the unit went to sleep and "re-awoke" the card was not seen and I had to perform a soft reset. Then I stumbled upon this thread - I tried it and all is now as it should be.

Hi,
well I can confirm: IT IS WORKING
1.)
I got this 8 GB MicroSD-card (SDHC) from Amazon:

2.)
I installed the SDHC cap
ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Artemis/SDHC-Artemis.cab
3.)
I used the 8 GB
(I copied all TOMTOM, Navigon MAPS and a lot of MP3/AVI onto it -> perfect !!!)
________
BUT:
Using WM5torage and ActiveSync is very slow (~500 kb/s)
(so I used the USB-Adapter, that is VERY fast).
Internal access (playing mp3 or reading larger maps) looks ok to me.
Have fun!

Hi,
I apologize for posting HP IPAQ stuff in this thread, but link to it was created from HP WM5 SDHC card support. Because WORKING !!! :) cab was from this thread I hope that people from this community will find this experience useful.
As the title says I used SDHC cab from this thread and applied it directly to WM5. So procedure was realy simple - just install sdhc.cab. After reset my IPAQ recognizes "old" 2MB SD card and new 4GB Kingston SDHC 4 GB class 6 card. Many thanks to everyone participating in solution

I Installed this SDHC as well and It works great with My Ipaq rx9510 Travelmate. So far the biggest problem I had with other drivers, after I shut down the unit.. and restarted it it would loose the sdhc card and I would have to soft reset it every time to get it to work.
This Driver seems to be holding up...
Ill keep you posted if there are any changes.
Though it doesnt give me the remainding space available on the card on the HP storage as it did with the regular cards.

Hi All,
The microSDHC card patch for Artemis by BEPE works flawlessly on my XDA Orbit. I've never faced any problem with the apps on my phone - WiFi, TomTom Navigator 6, and VFR charts (aviation maps) all work fine.
In fact, my 8gb Sandisk microSDHC card is already full! I've got several full motion pictures and mp3's on it. I can't wait for the 32gb to come out.
Thanks once again to Bepe for the patch.

Hi there guys,
since i started this thread a lot has happened.
my original question was asked to find out if the upcoming upgrade to WM6 would bring us SDHC capacity to our artemis... everybody thought it wouldn't and briljant minds created the sdhc cab that works for so many people (but not me..)
Other briljant minds created roms that are sdhc capable, so I too am using a nice big card now ;-)
but i actually never even checked out if the original update of my provider T-mobile NL to WM6 did or did not bring the update... But now i did... and guess what: T-mobile NL WM6 rom for artemis has SDHC support! so there's your answer ;-)

I have an iPaq rx5915 and my testing shows that for me the best SDHC cab file is SDHC_DRIVERS_FOR_C550_AND_N560_BY_GreateVK_AND_Fre ePK.cab 32.8kb which can be found all over this forum.
SDHC_DRIVERS_FOR_C550_AND_N560_BY_GreateVK_AND_Fre ePK.cab - BEST OPTION OUT THERE
SDHC.cab - does not work above 4gb (shows the storage card, but can't access files stored outside the first 4gb).
A639_SDHC.cab - does not even show a 16gb card.
SDHC-Artemis.cab - does not even show a 16gb card.
On other note I was able to avoid having to soft reset every time by adding this registry value (using pregutl with activeSync):
pregutl -s hklm\DRIVERS\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Class\SDMemory_C lass :DisablePowerManagement=dword:1
But be careful with this. For example if you leave a file open and playing in media player and turn it off and on, it will freeze and lock up, then requiring the soft reset you were trying to avoid.

Hey everyone,
I've got a Palm Treo 700wx.
I also have the SDHC_WM5WM6.zip file.
I recently did a hard reset.
I've used this before with this palm so I know it works.
However when I installed the SDHC.cab, it did ;let me see and copy from the card, but then I could not write to the card. But when I replace the two DLL files in the Windows folder and install the Cert.cab, I can no longer see the card.
Any ideas?
God bless,
Johnathan

Many thanks !! I have a Kingston 4Gb micro SDHC (in a mini SD adapter) splitted in 2 primary partitions of 1.9 Gb each and they are fully recognized by my HP Ipaq hw6915. I will use one of the 2 partitions for all TomTom stuff and the other one for file storage (mp3, avi, imags, ecc....)
I used the driver attached in THIS (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1492651&postcount=31) post.
Thanks again.

With the original update from HTC sdhc (WM6) it doesn't work.

You will need to unzip the file first (should be a CAB file inside). Transfer that file to your Artemis, than run the CAB file.

It worked with my ipaq travel mate. After installing the provided cab file, it was able to access my 8GB SDHC card where I had 2.3 GB already stored, how ever it was showing : Total storage card memory: 1777.50MB , In use: 1354.50MB (But actually it is over 2700.00MB in used) Free: 423.00MB, I don't understood why it showed those information wrong, but I am happy to be able to read the card. If any of you know the solution to fix those size related information, let us know. Thanks again!!!

Hi,
Is there any solution if we put wrong drivers for sdhc?
Because the mobile is stuck at green screen.
Is there any safe boot?
