Would a Quad-band EDGE-capable GSM phone with tri-band UMTS/HSDPA data capability work with an Softbank Sim Card in Japan?

A 3G capable phone will work with Softbank.
But you won't be able to get the flat rate data usage because the password for that is a closely guarded secret.
