View Full Version : HTC Touch - I'VE GOT ONE!!!

Just managed to get my hands on HTC TOUCH!!! NICEEEE!!! Not the best performer, but well designed. TouchFLO software looks realy good. 3D interface - iPhone might be a little too late. The only thing that might be better about apple product - is hassle finding the software :) Nothing personal, but I think Apple stich people just on branding.
Anyway, I've got the device from Inkino guys on TCR. I'm happy with it as a toy. You can go and check it out yourself.
P.S. Not advertising, just like to deal with them...

They use some sort of new screen on this machine. I was told there is only one supplier for it in the world. But I'll try...

Acording to John Wang (HTC Chief Marketing Officer + inventor of TouchFLO) the screen is new hardware and unique to the Touch (for now).
The "Gestures" of TouchFLO only kicks in when the screen detects skin (your finger). so it looks like for now it's a no go. :(

If it detects the skin, then for sure it's a capacitive sensor in addition to the resitive (the normal one).

It looks like an alternative input mode if you look at the video so if someone can figure out how to extract that it would be nice. I belive that that it would work because the only two touch screen technologies are active and passive so I don't believe it should matter

instead of going on to a entirely new tecnology would it be easier for them to code a app that determines the no of pixels simultaneously pressed and then gusses if you used your finger or the stylus

Also, is the touchscreen very different then the one on the rest of HTC phones?
Is the phone very different than the Elf, hardware wise?
Thanks.

it's about time they move onto a new scrolling mechanism... the scroll bar is SO retarded for handheld use
good job apple for bringing the idea to mass market

Technically the only thing I'm excited about is the fact that they have some app running that lets you scroll any wm6 app that has scrollbars using dragging.
That's ALL software and no hardware at all. If only someone could extract that somehow and put it on my herald I'd be one happy camper!
For the most part I'm using my finger for everything anyway. I did registry hack to make the scrollbars larger, so I just use my finger everywhere. And with SPB mobile shell, I'm not jelous of iPhone or this thing one bit. I HAVE A KEYBOARD!!!

If this special screen senses skin touch only, what if its a really cold day and you are wearing gloves - will it still work or do you have to remove your gloves first? This is what I thought about the iPhone too!
Can the new owner please test with gloves - leather/wool and tell us if it still works please?
Thanks!

Yes I agree 100%. With grumps GUI and the standard apps that come with my phone that feature would make my phone complete.
Here's the official HTC Touch site there's a funny little video under the see tab.

Had big problems. Just give me half an hour, may be a bit more...
Interesting stuff - standard procedure for extrom unlocking opens a partition with EXT_ROM2 name o.O
The thing we are after is not in extended rom. After HR it appears without extrom installation.

I like the HTC touch (Elf). Its the smalles PDA i've ever seen. Its even smaller than my S310. Its also very light. But basicaly its your most basic PDA you can imagine. TI Omap850 200mhz processor, 2mp camera, Wlan. thats it. No Qwerty, no GPS, no UMTS or anything.
The touchflo is very nice to use, after getting used to it. It only fails in 1 thing. They dont follow through in the messaging part. As soon as you have to type a message you have to pull out your stylus and start picking that tiny keyboard thingie. They should have enabled the phonepad, with T9 support in the messaging applications. If they had done this, i would have been a happy panda.

So does it do the "scrolling" contacts etc. with the stylus?
I was under the impression that when using your finger it scrolls and using the stylus it acts normaly (eg multi select).

Some people are saying that using the built in keyboard for writing text message is difficult. Doesn't the Touch have hand writing recognision software or could one install something? I thought all WM6 phones had this?

After seeing the demo graphics on htctouch.com, I am more than certain that this UI is implemented by a clever screen driver and is likely portable to other WM devices. If the ROM dump is done, we can get to work on discovering which files are needed...

XP's builtin zip was prompting me for a password while trying to extract that zip. Used Winrar and it extracted fine :)

I've downloaded the ROM dump.I've found a "HTCHome.dll.409.mui".
If someone can explain to me the method of installation?
It's the same as a XP's mui installation?
If the mui isn't compatible with the OS version or the device my ROM can be bricked or the installation is impossible (I think the first propability :P )
thanks

Read this guys...
Been following a cool thread over at 4winmobile.com about the whole HTC Touch themes, cabs and interface etc...Looks like everything else is transferable, except the cube GUI, as......
OK
Another update on the Touchflo 3D UI software. The HTC Elf (aka Touch) has a different touch screen digitizer where it also senses pressure etc. The touch.dll is vastly different to support this new type of touch screen. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE to have this functionality on the hermes unless you replace your screens. :)
Also...
JJ,
I am considering the hypothesis of decompiling the DLL and try to port some timed functions that may try to «emulate» the pressure sensibility, based on pressing area analysis.
If i am successful maybe we can emulate the «UI roll up».
Please tell me if you are interested in trying to so such a thing.
In case you are, maybe you can later integrate it on your new ROM and maybe then release a Black Shadow 2 or just an add-on.
Please advise.
Best regards.
Sorry peeps. Looks like new screen hardware after all :( But no one is giving up on an alternative.
Anyway, take a look at that thread anyway as it is very interesting all the same.:)

For lists you can press and move up ( or down ) to scroll or just sweep the screen up ( or down ) for auto scrolling ( like a roulette wheel ! )
The auto scroll is cool because you can control scroll speed by the speed of the swipe. It also slows to a stop eventually if the list is long enough.
For PIE pages with horizontally and vertically scrollbars you can press and move your finger around the screen and the page movement will follow.
One last thing, I find the accuracy of the screen incredible. You can select almost everything using your finger including the keyboard letters.
After only a couple of days I am getting pretty good at typing on the keyboard by finger.

That's a nice thread - I'm hoping that one day (after CID unlock) we Athena owners can also have a nice landscap version of Black - IV - Shadow....

I found that Google Maps and MS Live search work really well with the HTC Touch since both these mapping apps move the map arround as you move your finger around the screen.

If anyone is interested in changing the left soft key on the Today page, the registry key is as follows:
KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Today/Keys/112
String Value: Default -> Name to Display
String Value: Open -> "Path to exe"
For example, I changed Calendar to Comm Manager as follows:
Value: Default set to Comm Mgr
Value: Open set to "\Windows\CommManagerLink.exe"
No need to restart phone.

I was wanting to put Pocket mechanic ver 2.45 on put there seems to be a bad copy going round thats messing up phones and then needing hard reset .

Some kind of registary cleaner would be good. every PPc i have hade has had registery errors and required a cleanup, even from new.

If this special screen senses skin touch only, what if its a really cold day and you are wearing gloves - will it still work or do you have to remove your gloves first? This is what I thought about the iPhone too!
Can the new owner please test with gloves - leather/wool and tell us if it still works please?
Thanks!
i think that it wont work with gloves only direct contact with your fingers i know this is at least true for the iphone the htc tho may allow for some functionality due to it also using the stylus interface.
