I have a Cingular 8125, which I hadn't used for a while (got a Trinity:-)

I am trying to set it up for my wife, so I attempted to unlock it and upgrade to WM6. It is a G3 (it had 2.26). I had upgraded it several times before. but was never able to bring it down to 1.xx in order to unlock it.

So, I started trying to downgrade it, but basically, every time it entered bootloader, it seemed to lose connection and it just timed out on the PC, without ever going to the update bar on the bootloader screen.

I ran IPL_SPL_3.08, and it upgraded fine. But still no go on downgrading.

Finally, I ran Shelltool (bug fixed) and managed to flash to OS 1.5.4.2. But, after the hard reset, it just stays on the blue Cingular screen (showing IPL 3.08; SPL 3.08; GSM 02.47.11; OS 1.5.4.2.)

I have tried flashing again with an original Cingular WWE ROM (RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship_1. exe), with the 1.5.4.2 ROM, even with a WM6 ROM (again, through Shelltool.) I have placed it in a powered cradle, have tried both Shelltool and RUU flashes, both while in the blue Cingular screen, and while in Bootloader mode. I have disconnected and reconnected each time, and rebooted many times (both the Wizard and the PC.) I have hard-reset. I have also tried both with USB selected and unselected in Activesync.

The Shelltool seems to freeze. The official RUU gives "ERROR [296]: UPGRADE ONLY. The NBF file cannot be used for your PDA Phone. Please get another NBF file." Or, alternately, it gives "ERROR [264]: CONNECTION."

Any ideas if this is repairable?

I think it was 2.26 (it may have been something like 2.27....), but it definitely didn't have the .000 at the end. I thought that the Wizards without the .000 were G3. Did I screw up?

I thought I read somewhere that IPL/SPL 3.08 was a bad convert from a Charmer? If this is true and the Charmer bootloaders are different than the Wizard bootloaders then you may have put yourself in a bind.

The fact that you can still get past bootloader is promising even though the phone doesn't finish booting.

Try flashing from the bootloader (tricolor IPL/SPL screen with USB in the corner)

Thanks. I've been trying to flash in both bootloader or "blue" screen, but no go so far. I just tried the official Cingular .nbf through shelltool: it spent about 30 minutes (in bootloader,) then it stopped responding. It's been doing this forever now.

Any other options left?

You CAN'T use shelltool in boot loader mode! it needs the OS and the TRUFFS to read and write to the phone.

Any phone that doesn't go past the boot loader must be fixed with mtty, RUU or SD card...

Thanks for the info. I've been reading about mmty and just downloaded it. But I only have a 4GB card handy (from my Trinity.) I might be able to find my old 2GB one at home.

It seems that the IPL_SPL 3.08 might be a real problem. I'll try the card flash, but based on the above thread, I am not holding my breath.

BTW, if the problem is indeed with the IPL_SPL 3.08, then perhaps the suggestion that we upgrade to it (in red) here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435 should be removed, so that we don't get more expensive bricks.

After I unlocked my wizard and before I try any new ROM, I always burn the latest German wizard ROM with 3.08 IPL/SPL "ruu_vario_aku3.3_3822_382120_026911_tmo_de_ger_shi p". Then I downgrade the Radio ROM to Cingular 2.25.11. Then I burn my ROM of choice. I've found it works best for me. I've never had a problem with 3.08.

What are the grounds for such a comparison? How to tell that an SPL works better than another? As far as i know the SPL is there to initialise the hardware and to apply security restrictions.

What i'd like to know is if anyone has been successful in downgrading IPL/SPL from 3.xx to 2.xx as itsme once said that there was a security in newer SPL's preventing downgrading (i must look for it...)

O.K., so maybe it's not 3.08, but something has sure gone bad.

I am trying to use mtty 1.1.42.538, but see only Port 1, Port 2 and USB. When I type in \\.\WSCUSBSH001 I get a message that it cannot open the \\.\WSCUSBSH001 port.

I tried resetting as described in message #7 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=264652&highlight=mtty1.42, but nothing happened.

I also tried choosing USB, then typed in r2sd all and again, nothing happened - I just get CMD> again....

So, can anyone think of anything else I can do, or should I just drop it from the 4th floor?

Both ar 3.08, and I have the feeling that this is why I cannot flash the official Cingular ROM over what I have now. Which makes me wonder: is there an official Wizard ROM file combined with the IPL/SPL 3.08? This may at leas allow me to flash.

I had also upgraded my IPL/SPL to 3.08 -- up from the 2.25 on the newest Cingular ROM.
Anytime I've flashed to a WM6 ROM, I've been able to downgrade to the T-Mobile 2.26 ROM -- which changes the IPL/SPL to 2.26 -- with no problems before upgrading to a WM6 ROM. After flashing the WM6, I then go back in and upgrade the IPL/SPL once again to 3.08. It's not failed me yet.

But then, the 8125 reboots, and unfortunately, it still hangs on the boot screen, and it still gives the OS as 1.5.4.2. Have tried a number of times, always the same:-(

If I were you I might be talking to IMEI unlockers. Their process works from bootloader and might be able to get you CID unlocked and fix your corrupted CID area, which seems to be your major problem atm. In any case I would contact them and explain your situation and see if they think their software will unlock your phone. If so then you should be good to go once you CID is "uncorrupted" and unlocked.

Do you have "format failed" message?
if so, you have 50/50 per cent for resurrection.
3.08 is not direct problem here anyway..., version is not exactly matter of problem...

NO. I'm tired and what you read can't be done... well, the part about the RUU with IPL/SPL might be possible.

try to use the attached file to see if you can get the correspondent boot loader files for your OS ;)

Sorry, i had to remove the file as i got a virus infection this weekend and it F***ED almost all of my PE executables. The file wasn't infected but was corrupted :(

I've just made the RUU for you to use.
Inside the zip file you'll find an IPL/SPL WWE RUU only file, versions 1.05
Use it to see if you can boot your phone again.

I think you're almost at a dead-end
The SPL is the requirement here and since it's a very different version from the OS it simply can't launch it. When i get home later i'll make an RUU for SPL only and will try to look for the info where itsme showed how to fool the SPL in order to allow donwgrading.
If that doesn't work and you don't have an SD backup then i guess you must go with imei-check's solution...

It is strange that the OS would not update, though, even after it shows 100 completion with the "official" WM6 ROMs.

I did try to get an unlocker last night from IMEI unlockers, but after I paid, they came back asking for a copy of my passport or driver's licence as verification for the $38 payment, so a balked, since I am not wild about sending this info around:-) (Silly, because I had actually purchased an unlocker from them late last year for my then brand new Trinity.)

If you do have the time, I would love to try updating just the SPL.

Looks like the file above as a screwed SPL and it isn't in fact a 1.05 version but 1.01 instead.:mad: I got them like that and should have checked though i never used them (i always use .06)
I was making some experiments with typhoonnbfdecode.pl and it said the SPL file didn't have a valid SPL version on the predefined location thus not being accepted at boot by your wizard.

So i advise you to flash the attached file which is an RUU like the previous but with a 1.06 IPL/SPL extracted (by me) from an original Qtek WWE 1.06 (mine :D)

I tried flashing your 1.06, but again, it changed only the IPL. The SPL remained at 3.08.

I also tried flashing IPL/SPL 3.08, just in case. It upgraded, but still hangs at the blue Cingular screen. Then I tried flashing an OS-only file, but it wouldn't take - it finishes the upgrade, congratulates me, but when the Wizard reboots, it hangs and it still shows OS 1.5.4.2.

I am about to give up, and use the Wizard to cut onions on:-)

I would just like to chim in and say I am having the exact same problem. Circumstances are a little different.

Using a cingular 8125. Tried to update it from the original rom to Crossbow Reloaded 1.7 using ShellTools.

Whilst using ShellTools a notification popped up on my phone saying something like repllog.exe failed to run and the phone seem to freeze. I left it running why I watch the state of origin (about 3 hours) came back and shelltools still hadn't finished.

Rebooted and the IPL, SPL GSM and OS values had all updated but the phone just sits on the boot screen.

I can also get into the boot loader ok.

I have tried to to flash it with wizard love, but I get error 300. I have downgraded it to the original 1.8 ship rom, the flash seems to work (the SPL value doesn't change as is happening here) but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen.

I have also tried flashing it with the newest official rom from Cingular. But again the phone doesn't get past the boot screen.

Current values shown on the boot screen are:

IPL 2.25
SPL 2.25
GSM 02.25.11
OS 2.25.11.1

The common thing here is ShellTools. I think it is something to do with the CID being borked.

Edit: I have been through this thread for some ideas. I tried applying SPL_1.06_only_BL4 to downgrade the SPL but I get a error [238] file read.

I have a feeling this has nothing to do with the SPL and is a more serious issue probably revolving around CID. I am almost convinced my phone is bricked :(

yes i am also interested i bought a wizard and came in this condition. went through paypal and its not looking like im going to get any money back. i was able to get the ipl to 1.05 or whatever button rom is but not the spl :( i was curious if you could provide the information of the person your trying to get it cid unlocked from as im also having issues with the shell loader on my G4 and almost willing to just pay to have it unlocked. any info would be greatly apreciated

I have used them to unlock my Trinity, but as I said, refused to do the deal this time, because of their crazy, IMO, demands for personal info.

It may be worth a try, but keep in mind that they are unlikely to refund your $$ if their unlocker fails to fix the problem. I emailed them with a description of my problem, and they responded with a very general and non-committal email, which I guess may be all they can do.

Let us know if it works for you.

I have the same problem with a Cingular 8125 and unfortunately the phone is CID locked, since I get the error about security when I try to use the "r2sd all" command. Also when I try to reset to factory I get the "format failed" error. Ihave 2.25 IPL/SPL and I can load button rom but it is only IPL that is changing.

as it seems my only alternative would be to use imei-unlockers to unlock the CID and then try the "r2sd all" method to fix the phone. Is the above correct? Do you think that it would work?

So in order to restore a previously backed up image, an unlocked phone is needed, right? It seems that I dont have many alternatives then..
I saw that even though I can update to button rom, it is the SPL that always stays at 2.25. Is there any way to downgrade this too? I tried applying button rom again, but nothing changed. Do you know if it has to do with the problem I'm facing?

Imei-unlockers may be an option, although their business practices are too shifty for my taste, so I'll give them a pass.

But what if one puts an "original" ROM image on an SD card and boots from it? Am I wrong to assume that the phone would accept it, even if not CID unlocked? Or would security lever "0" still be a prerequisite?

It also sounds like you can get the update util to actually run via USB (presume that you put your device into bootloader (3 colour bars) mode for that), and you are getting it doing the update apparently correctly but not updating. I'd say that is because you are trying to flash a non-vendor rom (WM6). Try flashing the original vendor rom withOUT the IPL/SPL, ie extract the OS only and build a new nbf file with just the OS,a nd use the update util to just flash the OS and see if it comes back to life.

since this method might work for my problem also (CIDlocked 8125, G3, freezing at splash screen, able to load button rom - only IPL changes, failing to factory reset with "Format FAT partition, format is failed" message) is there a method to do that??

You have missed something. I have tried every factory rom and all of them have the same problem. You get to the boot screen and the phone just locks up.

Edit: I have been through this thread for some ideas. I tried applying SPL_1.06_only_BL4 to downgrade the SPL but I get a error [238] file read.

I have a feeling this has nothing to do with the SPL and is a more serious issue probably revolving around CID. I am almost convinced my phone is bricked :(

Error 300 is an update tool that is too "old". I haven't seen 238 before.. reading: http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5426.html 238 doesn't sound too good.

You've said in another (later) post that you've tried to flash all the official roms (and here you said 2.25 successfully) but can't get past boot, sounds like the rom area is somehow corrupted with the original flash.

I have had the same "bad flash" with Shelltool before (ie, hang at boot screen), but I haven't had problems returning to an official rom before, although the main difference for me is that I'm on a G4 locked phone, so I cook the roms myself without IPL/SPL changes.

Since you got the official versions back on the phone, hopefully you can get a warranty repair.. (I've done one of those as well, hence I don't touch IPL/SPL any more :-)

Btw, If you had changed the CID to something that the original vendor rom would not accept, I would have expected that you would get a Country ID Error...

since this method might work for my problem also (CIDlocked 8125, G3, freezing at splash screen, able to load button rom - only IPL changes, failing to factory reset with "Format FAT partition, format is failed" message) is there a method to do that??

Hmmm. Me thinks if you can't hard reset thats bad. Can't say I have any idea for you on that one...

The next RUU has a nk.nbf file that was edited to look like the boot loader version is v4 and thus fool the actual boot loader in thinking it's an upgrade instead ;)

I had tried downgrading SPL/IPL before, including trying the files provided by you. Nothing seemed to work. Was at home today, tried a whole bunch of newer RUUs and ROMs, again nothing worked.

Then, I looked at a copy of your special SPL 1.06, and clicked on it, it updated, my "dead" 8125 rebooted, then it got stuck again (reading SPL 1.06. IPL 3.08, with the Button OS.) I was distracted for a minute or so, THEN I HEARD THE CHIME!:-)))

The OS loaded, I was able to unlock the Wizard, updated to the latest official Cingular ROM, and now am running smoothly the latest NBD OS 6 ROM!

My IPL is 1.X and my SPL is 3.08, so I can't install anything in my MDA, and it freezes on boot screen.

I tried to download Mestrini's SPL 1.06, but it says it cannot open the file.

Is there any other working "SPL only" downgrade avalilable?

I have a Cingular 8125, which I hadn't used for a while (got a Trinity:-)

I am trying to set it up for my wife, so I attempted to unlock it and upgrade to WM6. It is a G3 (it had 2.26). I had upgraded it several times before. but was never able to bring it down to 1.xx in order to unlock it.

So, I started trying to downgrade it, but basically, every time it entered bootloader, it seemed to lose connection and it just timed out on the PC, without ever going to the update bar on the bootloader screen.

I ran IPL_SPL_3.08, and it upgraded fine. But still no go on downgrading.

Finally, I ran Shelltool (bug fixed) and managed to flash to OS 1.5.4.2. But, after the hard reset, it just stays on the blue Cingular screen (showing IPL 3.08; SPL 3.08; GSM 02.47.11; OS 1.5.4.2.)

I have tried flashing again with an original Cingular WWE ROM (RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship_1. exe), with the 1.5.4.2 ROM, even with a WM6 ROM (again, through Shelltool.) I have placed it in a powered cradle, have tried both Shelltool and RUU flashes, both while in the blue Cingular screen, and while in Bootloader mode. I have disconnected and reconnected each time, and rebooted many times (both the Wizard and the PC.) I have hard-reset. I have also tried both with USB selected and unselected in Activesync.

The Shelltool seems to freeze. The official RUU gives "ERROR [296]: UPGRADE ONLY. The NBF file cannot be used for your PDA Phone. Please get another NBF file." Or, alternately, it gives "ERROR [264]: CONNECTION."

Any ideas if this is repairable?

(Or should I cry (or take a hammer to the Wizard:-((

I used a ipl/spl 2.26 only update, and could see the system startup!

perhaps a nonsensical recommendation, but for those that have been able to use buttoms or love to get their ipl at 1.xx with no change to spl...have you guys considered reflashing the same rom a few times? I recall reading a number of times in different threads that sometimes it takes more than one attempt to downgrade both numbers. (why that is the case, no one knows yet)...but it might be worth a shot.

Had the same problem (IPL/SPL mismatch and subsequent update meltdown) and it stemmed from my using lokiwiz03 instead of the 02b version. From what I could tell, the CID was never unlocked so the T-Mobile 2.26 ROM would throw "Cannot update this device" error every time. Ran lokiwiz02b (after downgrading the IPL using the XDA_MiniS ROM (http://rapidshare.com/files/43423464/Xda_MiniS_LaunchROM_v154102.exe) to recover my 8125) and everything worked. The IPL/SPL 3.08 update seems to work regardless of CID lock/unlock, so stay the h*ll away from it until everything else is where you want it.
