Stock up on those 3G handsets, folks -- they could become very valuable commodities here in the next few weeks. As part of an ongoing series of spats between wireless giants Qualcomm and Broadcom, the US International Trade Commission has ruled that handsets containing Qualcomm 3G chipsets (and that's a whole heck of a lot of handsets) that are manufactured starting today may not be imported into the US. By all accounts, this appears to be much more than legal posturing on Broadcomm's part -- a ban is a ban -- and we've gotta believe this'll resolve itself right quick. But if for whatever reason it doesn't, get ready for an eBay free-for-all in a gloomy, scorched-earth future where the only high speed handsets are pawned for thousands of New Dollars on the black market.
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. International Trade Commission on Thursday imposed a partial ban on the imports of third-generation, or 3G, cellular phones using Qualcomm Inc.'s microchips in a ruling over a patent dispute between the company and rival Broadcom Corp.
The decision means that major handset makers using Qualcomm's microchips in their 3G phones will not be able to import new models into the U.S. after June 7. New phones that are of the same model as those manufactured before June 7 will still be allowed into the country.

.... wait... if they ban Qualcomm 3G, then we'd have NO new 3G handsets ever. How would the US band that? Does Broadcom make CMDA/WCDMA chips as well?

is it devices built before june 7th or devices that are already on the market before june 7th?
I think it means devices that are already on the market, not just stock which has already been built.
I'm not sure how much this will hurt qualcomm, but it's more likely to hurt broadcom with less users available.
European wireless use is growing fast and hugely more so in the ASEAN nations so I think that if this ban continues then we'll see some developments that you guys just have to watch enviously. Good for us :) but bad for you

This will probably hit Qualcomms shares more than anything. You'll find the presure of handset companies on Qualcomm will ensure this issue is resolved ASAP.
There are loads of other chipset suppliers for GSM/GPRS/WCDMA/HSPA radios and baseband. TTPCom, TI, NI, Broadcom, ADI, Phillips etc all have some market share but nowhere near as much as Qualcomm.
