Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1179841&postcount=14
Works on my X01HT.
Make sure you turn your phone off after this registry edit using the power button, don't use the reset button, and you'll find the keyboard symbols will be mapped OK.

the most easy way I think is d/l a program called HTCustom
Install it, run it, at the keyboard setting, pick "Japanese"
save then soft reset......
works fine

So I tried both of the cab files attached in post #3 and neither of them fixed my issue. Mine seems rather unique. There are about 8 symbols that are out of wack. Here's how my keyboard is mapped right now:
Hardware key: Actual Symbol it brings up:
! ~
@ !
? @
_ ;
- ?
" -
: _
; :
The above was the case before the cab installs, and with either of them installed as well. All other symbols, letters, and numbers are working fine though. Can any experts see what the issue is by looking at the above mapping problems? It's totally over my head. I'm on vp3G's version of LSVW's 3.30.2.1 Rom.
If anyone can figure this out without me having to flash another ROM, I'll buy you a beer.
EDIT: Ok, the formatting of the symbols above did not show up in the post the way I expected. The symbol on the left is the hardware key, and the symbol directly to the right of it is the actual symbol that comes up on the screen when you hit said hardware key. Thanks.

Really? I already had this app and tried all that. It does not fix my problem.
Beer is still up for grabs...

it's just your language setting in WM6, set it to "cingular" (if you'r eon Cingular) and it'll go away.
had the same problem for a few weeks until I figured that out.

Like I said in my post #9, I set it to Cingular, reset as prompted, and it DID NOT FIX IT. I tried Japanese too as takaki suggested above. That DID NOT WORK EITHER.
Brewski still up for grabs...

I had the same problem. I just used the HTCustom Tweak to set the keyboard to Cingular and all is fine now.

Hay guys not sure how many people are having this problem.
But this is my problem Dopod 838pro with Windows M6 Black 3.01
From a fresh rom image the symbol pad works, but i noticed as soon as i install blackberry connect, the symbol pad stops working.
So if you guys have BBConnect thats your problem
hopfully there will be a fix for this but iam willing to not deal with it at the moment :)

I'm baffled. I mean, this is the solution for EVERYONE except me. Looks like I'm going to have to go with a completely different ROM to see if that works.

Rom: WM6.1 Nola Icerom v. 1.1
Radio: v1.54.11.00
Hmmm, maybe it IS your ROM. WM6.1 Nola Icerom v. 1.1? Radio: v1.54.11.00? Where did you get this configuration? I haven't been as active in the past few days, so ... Did I miss something?

Ha, sorry PVS, that's a joke... I did that as an inside joke to another member. I have to get rid of that. I had mentioned in my post on the first page what my real rom is: vp3G's version of LSVW's 3.30.2.1 Rom with 1.41 radio.

Damn! And I thought I missed something biblical in my two days "away" ... WM8 or something, with a radio that could outpace my cable connection at home. Oh well, guess I need to wait a few more days before one of these cooks brews up something like that.
Sorry I didn't put your info together with the first post. Had a tooth extraction yesterday, and the pain-killers are making me a little slow.
Also sorry I don't have an answer for your problem. All of mine, including austinnyc's typical and predictable reply, (which is really becoming SO BORING, btw) were already offered.
Good luck with your issue,

do you have total commander? if you do, try this
Different keyboard layouts for different Hermes versions
Issue: When applying a non-cingular ROM to an 8525 its default keyboard is different than the 8525.
The Fix:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\Qwerty]
"Layout"=263177 (decimal)

I have an HTC Tytn, not an 8525, but I tried your registry tweak anyway. No go :(
This has to be some sort of hardware failure.

ok dude why install cabs and all that crap when you can just do it by yourself. Just click where it says xda-wiki at the top of this page and click on the hermes picture and look where it says keyboard layouts and look at the bottom of that section you will see the reg fixes.
oh and whoever told him to look google or something.... haters!! you went through that too.

curse you ricans and your pesky keyboard layouts!
was trying for ages and finally came upon a soloution:
if you have an english layout install HTCustom and change your keyboard layout to english... its such a simple fix but it took me like 30 mins to work out. >.>
