Are you guys having any problems with stereo sound quality playback or
sound quality (both ends) during calls?

I'm getting a black Jawbone for handling calls but I would like to be able to
listen to music or watch video on the commute to and from work without
having the 'train/subway' in my head.

Is the S9 from Motorola good at pairing up with the Hermes (X01HT in my
case) and holding the connection? Do all the remote features on the S9 headset
work with the S9/Hermes pairing?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

hey man. the s9 are great...the best stereo headset hands down! its like jaw dropping. the controls on the side is very sensitive. its not like an actually button besides the talk/end button. the audio controls are like touch control. HOWEVER, the actual headset for phone calls is horrible...most stereo headsets use both sides to listen to the caller...however this one only allows hearing the caller on the LEFT ear...that is the only downside. if you're coming from the jawbone...it is night and day...but for music/video purposes its great. i use it for my ipod now :p

Cool, I was worried about stereo sound quality over BT since BT isn't known
for great sound quality to begin with. I have heard that the S9 are only
average for calls but that's going to be the Jawbone's job.

So all the button features like answer/end, volume up/down, play/pause
and forward/back tracks all work with the Hermes based phone?

I love the S9. the audio and the controls all work wonderfully.

The phone aspect isn't really good, it picks up a lot of background noise and it can be a bit difficult to annunciate into it.

As a music headset it is GREAT. great sound. Louder than it needs to be and great frequency range

I use the S9 quite a bit. The sound quality is fantastic and the volume can get quite loud. You'll often see me at starbucks listening to streaming internet radio with my S9/8525.

As far as call quality, it's not too bad. you only get call audio out of the left earbud, since the mic is in the right one. There's pretty good compression going on with the mic, so you really don't have to raise your voice at all. However, callers on the other end complain about background sound if I'm in a noisy place, so use it accordingly.

( I use the JawBone also, especially for long calls where background noise would be unacceptable. )

Louder than needed is always better than "I wish it could be louder". I was
hoping that it would not be underpowered. Thanks for bringing that point up
as I didn't read that in any of the online reviews out there. Plus, I always
think those reviews aren't so 'real life' anyways. Here on XDA-developers
you get the 'actual real life' reviews with no worries that someone is getting
paid to prop the product up for profit.

Call quality is a concern but I figured into that an ordered a Jawbone based
on the great reviews its received here on XDA.

Thanks for your input.

It's really good to hear that the S9 is NOT underpowered volume wise. :)
You can always turn it down but it really does suck when the sound is weak.
I would figure some of that loudness maybe due to what looks like a really
good fit (seal) of the headset to the ear causing a good block of surrounding
sounds.

It's too bad about call quality because that is usually one of Motorola only
strong points in most of their products. Oh well, I guess the other one being
looks has been achieved with the S9.

The background noise issue is the same reason I'm getting the Jawbone. I
have had the same complaint with the OEM wired headset that came with
the X01HT. People just don't want to talk to you when it gets hard to
understand you. Plus it really just doesn't help if you're trying to handle
a situation that needs no extra stress added like that loud background
noise. It's too bad because the caller's voice comes in nice and clear through
those OEM stereo headsets. Sometimes it's kind of creepy because it's too
clear and it sounds as if they're right in your head. ;)

Thanks for your input.

I had the s9 for about a month. It was great for music and video via Coreplayer. No skipping on my 8525 with the lastest rom. Call quality was decent, but I bought it for the music. Now, the bad news, my S9 just died on me a couple days ago and wouldn't charge. I finally got it to work ,sortof, but the controls on the right side don't respond. Called Motorola and got a return authorization. Will be sending it back. Hope it was just a fluke. Just some info. With coreplayer the S9 controls play/pause skip/ff didn't work. But volume and phone control worked.

Did you buy direct from Motorola? I just placed an order from an 'online shop'
so I hope I don't have any problems down the road. If I do, I hope I can deal
with MOTO directly since they 'sometimes' tend to be a bit more on the ball.
Plus most online shops will tell you to go directly to the manufacturer to deal
with warranty issues anyways so you never know who's handling warranty. :(

Good luck with the warranty exchange and I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for the heads up on the non-functioning buttons with Coreplayer. :)

I did want to point out a few details before I posted my review of them over at mobilitysite

Pro: USB charging... 1 cable to rule them all
Pro: only 1 blinking light, relatively subdued and it is facing the back of your neck while worn
Pro: will turn itself off after an hour if I fall asleep or an otherwise careless

Con: my fat fingers aren't really sensitive enough to find the little controls while worn
Con: it doesn't quite feel right on my big fat head... don't know if it is because it has to spread out a bit to get around my head or if I'm just not used to it. In any case it is very secure and isn't going to slip off.
Con: No way of determining battery life.. is it good for an hour or 8 hours?
Con: not quite flexible enough to store or a clip for a lanyard, although it is an easy fix to tie something to it

Thanks for breaking it down into pros vs cons.

I did not know that the S9 would shut it self down after an hour of inactivity.
That's cool since it should extent battery life a bit. The blinking LED is
hopefully not too noticeable by others, I hope.

Yeah, I've heard that the buttons can be a bit of a pain to deal with simply
because of the way they are made. I guess I'll just see how I rate in finger
size when I get these S9s sometime next week according to the website I
ordered them from.

I bought my S9 from an online shop as well, so i'm hoping that motorola wont give me a hard time when I turn it in for repair. In the meangtime I just ordered a sony hbh-ds-970 as a backup.

It's going to be Christmas in June for me when the Jawbone and the S9 arrive
this week and next week. :) Hopefully I won't have trouble with either one
of them because warranty returns are such a PITA. :(

For me its a 7.5 out of ten. Two things i dont like, it hurts my left ears just a little if i keep it in there for long, and that you only hear from the left side when talking on the phone... other from that i'm ok with it.

The Motorola S9 is a really nice little headset.

I find it a bit weak on bass, but I’m coming from a Motorola V3i (non-iTunes) with Motorola wired USB stereo headset, and that is one of the most impressive low cost sets of ear buds I’ve ever worn. Not sure how they did that! Note that Motorola wired USB headsets do NOT work on the Hermes, which is a shame, because the HTC wired headset is real junk.

The only glitchy things I’ve seen so far with the S9 and the Hermes / 8525 are:

After hanging up a call, music resumes, but sometimes skips badly for 10-20 seconds. A couple times pressing answer has given only a hum in the left ear, and no ability to talk or listen. Hopefully, the final versions of the Win Mob 6 Bluetooth stack will take care of this.

The S9 ships with 2 different sets of rubber “nubs” to cover the speakers. The default ones that come installed are small, and can be removed and rotated to really direct the sound into your ear as best as possible for different sizes and shapes of ears. In a little bag, you will find a spare set of the default nubs, but ALSO a larger set that have a very soft rubber membrane that floats over a harder rubber inner tube. Some users may find these more comfortable, as they do not intrude into your ear as far.

Personally, I don’t mind the fact that it switches to left ear only for voice calls, I’ve never been all that keen on that “you’re inside my head” sensation of stereo headsets when used for monaural voice.

Remember that on a stock Cingular ROM with Win Mob 5, this headset will basically sound like “mono”, not stereo, but that’s not Motorola’s fault, it's M$'s atrocious BT stack!

Good points:

- really, REALLY light, yet stays in place no matter what
- AV and phone controls work properly with HTC Hermes & Windows Mobile
- Rubber ear nubs direct sound into your ears without need for itchy foam covers
- Really soft touch activation of volume and FF/REW buttons (prevents displacment of the headset while adjusting the most common controls)

Not so good points:

- No indication of how much battery charge is left
- A little weak on bass response
- Not enough tactile difference to easily distinguish between play and answer buttons vs volume and FF/REW buttons
- Picks up room noise really badly in phone mode - works best in quiet(er) locations.

Thanks for your review. You filled a few more of the blanks that I was trying
to figure out. I hope the bass response won't be an issue for me but then
again I like to 'feel' my bass and these are just headphones so I don't expect
be getting 'rocked' by them is what I'm telling myself long before they arrive.

 OMG!!! BASS and lots of it!!! I am using GSPlayer with the sound settings
VERY tweaked to my taste and even with BassBoost at minimum I am getting
more bass then I would have imagined possible with a BT stereo headset.

Of course you must have really good, clean 192KBps or better MP3s to begin
with and if you ripped them yourself at 320KBps, then you're just enjoying
better then can be expected results with a BT stereo headset.

Me likely!

Once I manage to wipe the stupid smile off my face I will be back to
update my findings for anyone still on the fence thinking about getting
one of these Motorola S9's and needing a slight shove. :)

I put on the large silicon ear fittings and the bass is incredible.

With the latest ROM's and improved BT drivers I am now able to leave the phone next to the wall about 12 feet behind the basketball goal and shoot pro 3-pointers all day without skipping a beat. And that's while streaming with iPlay from my desktop at home. The microphone isn't the best but if someone calls you can talk, get rid of them, and get back to shooting and jamming in no time. We're getting there...

I wish i could find a similiar type headset that didnt suck for calls :( i would be willing to give mine up or trade/sell for a headset that was as good as this musically and had a good mic..

I feel your pain there as I just love the sound quality of the S9 for shutting
out the rest of the world on the commute but as Mr. T would say "I pity the
fool"... listening to me on the other end. Well okay Mr. T wouldn't say all
that but it does suck as a headset for making/receiving calls. After all the
great reviews here on XDA-developers for the Jawbone and the S9 I kind of
figured that it was going to be a two BT headset purchase.

Wouldn't it be sweet if Aliph (the makers of the Jawbone) made a stereo BT
headset that had the Jawbone's great call quality and the S9's awesome
stereo sound.

Aliph, are you listening? ;)

I'd buy that! :)

i would love a headset like that... i really hate the idea of having to buy another headset to use for talking... However, people that i have talked stated they noticed a difference depending on which rubber pieces i was using, if i use the big ones (which work best for music) then people complain of it being muffled and hard to hear me, however if i use the smaller ones people claim they can hear me better, but the quality is still poor...

and as someone mentioned before, if you have big fat head like i do, these can get a little uncomfy...

My wife says the S9's on her end of the call when I'm using the fat, bass
plugs (as I call them) sounds as if I calling from under a mattress, "flat and
squished sounding", hmmm. Haven't tried the regular S9 ear fittings because
I just love the bass too much and people just shouldn't be calling me when
I'm listening to my tunes.

I guess my nogging isn't too large because I tend to forget I have them on
unless I look waaaaaay up and then they sort of almost pop off my ears.

I'm using the S9 with a trinity device. Playing movies with BT stereo doesn't work very well. It appears that the BT stereo needs a lot of CPU power so it therefore make movies jerky and unwatchable at times. I'm going to try reducing the movie quality and therefore cpu power to improve this.

It might be better on the Hermes but if you plan to use the S9 primarily for watching movies then you might be dissappointed. Otherwise I'm fairly happy with it. Using it for voice calling is a no-go for me. My friends can't hear me most of the time and my mother who is losing her hearing can't hear me at all.

If there is any non-hardware noise cancelling solution out there it might help.

The sweet spot for this device is at the gym to listen to music where you can just put your phone down and wander around the machines etc.

I had the s9 headset for about two weeks, then it became a nightmare. The headset buttons became unresponsive and would not charge. I suspected it may have gotten a little sweat inside. I was using the headset at the gym mostly, so much for water resistant. Anyways called motorola, and got a RA number and sent it in for repair. Well I get a call about 2 weeks later from motorola at 2 in the morning to tell me that they can not send the repaired s9 to my address since it is not a CONUS address. I was pissed. Told them I was going back to sleep and I would call later. Called them back and asked why would they issue me an RA and accept the item when they wouldn't be able to send it back. They said that it was an error and an RA should not have been given. By the way if you live in Guam or Hawaii, Don't use the 1800-moto repair number, they will not send your item back. They are not able to return your item. The reason is that they ship via FEDEX and there "system will not accept outside CONUS address." Well on the bright side they said when I do come up with a CONUS address my s9 will be waiting for shipment. WOW thank you so much MOTO for your help.:(

I've had the s9 for about 6 months, I use them about 60 hours a week.

I wear the s9 upside down so it goes under my ears instead of over, This keeps it out of the way for sunglasses, and hard hats (Im a construction guy)

The music is second to none, but the phone is poor. My wife wont talk to me if I am using them.

It also has been hit and miss with the voice dial programs. With some ROMs I can activate the voice dial with the button on the headset, with others it will activate the voice dial but will not play the repeat into the headset, so I do not know if it is calling the right contact.

Also, I lost one of the big earbuds and the only way to replace them was to have motorola send out a replacement headset.

and finally, HOWARD STERN SOUNDS KICK ASS!! on the s9 (my main reason for buying them).

Just found this thread and thought I would add my 2 cents. I have had the S9 for about 9 months now and am on my third headset. The first was returned to BestBuy(where I purchased it) within the 14 days because of the sweat problem mentioned by a previous poster. I was pissed because all of the pictures show a sweaty guy working out indicating that this is the appropriate use. Same symptoms, buttons don't work or one tap of volume and the headset thinks the button is being held down.

About a week later, the same thing happened so I did the "Hello Moto, is your moto feeling blue" call and RMA'd it to Motorola. That took about 2 weeks  due to shipping and such.

Then about 2 months after that, a run outside in the early Fall in Atlanta and sweat got in it again. Buttons failed. This time, rather than go 2 weeks without the headset, I decided to put it on one of my floor vents in my house. The vent is also in the sun. After 2 days sitting in the air conditioner's breeze and the sun, the headset worked just fine. It is still working although I am extremely careful about sweat getting into the headset. If you are in an air conditioned gym, you probably won't have a sweat problem. Every time I've had it I was outside either working in the yard or going for a run.

I think that the design problem is in the rubber covering over the USB charge port. It doesn't seal very well. I've been tempted to take some plastic and tape it over to see if that helps.

On the plus side, the headset works perfectly with my phone. I use either MortPlayer(audio books and podcasts) or HTC Audio Manager for music. I tried using TCPMP to play Divx encoded TV shows with audio going over the S9 only to find the same problem as a previous poster that apparently the BT process really sucks up CPU power. The same TV show will play just fine through a wired headset but stutters to the point that it is unwatchable over the S9 headset.

The controls work just fine for me although it does take some getting used to. It is easy to press the up/down on the right ear when you mean to play/pause the music. The volume is not a problem because if you accidentally press the center of that combo button, it is the phone which in my case only activates MS Voice Command. MSVC works perfectly by the way with full control through the headset. I also use the big black silicone(I guess that's the material) headset tips. One good thing about the two returns is that I now have some spare tips for the headset. I don't know anyone that likes the half tips that come installed on the phone. Swap them out first thing.

As for charging, one of the off site reviews mentioned above said that you could only charge with the charger supplied with the headset. I found that the charger supplied with the headset would charge the S9 of course, but would not charge any other USB-chargable devices I have. The S9 will charge off of any of my car chargers, my Battery Geeks Portable Power Station (http://www.batterygeek.net/130Wh_Portable_Power_Station_PPS130_3V_28V_p/pps130_batterygeek.htm), any computer with a 6->4pin USB cable, and any AC USB charger that I've found. There is a warning beep at about 2 minutes of remaining power. The light may also changer colors, but since it is behind your head, you won't see that before the beep.

I've placed calls with this headset, but it tends to pickup a lot of background noise according to people on the other end of the call. In my house, it's fine. In my Durango on the highway, it's a little loud, but no one has complained so much that I had to disconnect(which is pretty easy, press the power button on the headset once and the call transfers to the phone like a normal call).

Except for the sweat problem, I really love this headset. I hope that they work that out in the next generation. If this one dies, I'll either RMA it(if in the one year Moto warranty) or use the warranty extension from my American Express that I used to purchase the headset.

If you have any other questions, just ask. I use my headset about 2 hours a day either listening to books while walking our newborn around or at the gym or on my road bike(on the rollers in the basement, not on the road with music....personal safety pet peeve:mad:).

Well, it's been 11 months since I bought these S9's and it's been on my top 3
of best ever 'sound' purchases. Hands down the best bass for in ear
headsets. If you want club sound with a DEEP bass then these are the
headsets to get.

Now the downside, don't answer the phone if you are in a noisy area. The
call quality for the person calling you is crappy at best. This, however, does
have one MAJOR benefit in that if you answer the phone enough times with
this headset on you will end up getting less calls so you will in fact enjoy
your music all that much more. ;)

Yeah MOTO sucks 99.9% of the time when they screw up. If they make an
error then it's YOUR fault. Personally I would love to see them take a HUGE
dip in sales to get them off their high horse long enough to see that it's
their customers outside the 'lower 48' that keep them a float.

MOTO uses the rest of the world as their testing and failure grounds and
screws those people because they can't sue MOTO silly for their screw ups
but treats the U.S. like a prized Pitbull lapdog because it knows it will get
bitten six ways from Sunday if they F&#K those customers.

NICE WORK MOTO!!!

it must my egg-shaped head but when I wear these...the buds do not fully stay in my ear canal. So I have to basically turn the phone all the way up to hear any good base or hold the buds in my ear. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with a fat head. Besides losing weight is there any quick fixes?...do they make slightly longer ear bud tips for these instances?

Had some s9's a while back and I took them back because for (me) ,the fit in the ear started to hurt, and the controls sucked,I couldnt lay in a chair and listen to music and don't even sweat with them on, plus when somebody would call it was in one ear only ...so then I found Insignia (ns-bthdp) these are awsome to (me)... they are loud and clear and look like regular headphones (on the ear) not in the ear, pair up too easy and you can answer calls in stereo and listen to movies and videos in stereo too (yes!!!) You can lay in a chair and listen to music comfortably.

Now that being said, they are bigger then the s9's but u can still wear a hat and glasses with them on.:D

I just got my warranty replacement S9. Previous S9's sound wonderful but they too were choppy. I'm experiencing choppiness or jerky music playback. I've tried several formats of music, i.e. 44k 16bit Stereo and 22k 16bit stereo both behave the same way with choppy playback.

Is this a processor dilema in that it's just not going to get better in the Hermes (8525)?
Are there settings I can tweak to make sure the blue tooth connection is running at it's most powerful?
Are there settings on the phone I can make to ensure priority is given to the player/bluetooth?

I'm running CRC's 9.2 ROM with Radio 1.40.x

I have heard that some people who use S9 and go for jogging, it may damage the microphone /speaker with perspiration. I haven't tested to make it water proof and tested, but it may be of concern to some people who use it for such purpose.

Did we cover this mods on registry key?

Improve BT A2DP sound quality
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings]
Add new dword, Value name=BitPool; Value data=48 (Decimal)
For BitPool:
Microsoft suggests the following bitpool values for optimal buffer sizes.
30 - Low audio quality <= 40 - Medium audio quality 48 - High audio quality 58 - Excellent audio quality
Chose one you like. I think 48 is good enough.

Modify, Value name=UseJointStereo; Value data=0 (Decimal, Originally 1)
For UseJointStereo: use 0 instead of 1, then you got the real stereo.

The best thing to use to tweak the BitPool setings is Schaps advanced config, version 3.0 the last time I looked. I have a BitPool setting of 80 and in conjunction with SRS HD WOW (the one that works with A2DP) the sound is brilliant.

If you have S9's you have to use SRS WOW HD. It's a crime not to! The bass is suprisingly good for what are essentially ear buds. THe SRS WOW HD puts a lot of the crispness back into the sound that is lost with the A2DP codec.

The headset was ok. I owned it for a month. I didnt have any button problems like many have reported(and i worked out daily with them). The problem i had was it would keep skipping like every track. It got annoying after a while. I brought them back for different regular bluetooth headset(which i lost at a concert,..stupid idea bring it inside), then i recently bought jabra bt-8040. It was only $60 and its awesome with features such as pairing to 2 devices simultaneously, and sounds nice for being a 1 ear bluetooth. So far my favorite a2dp headset(i've tried about 3 different ones). The only thing i dont like about the bt-8040 is i cant get my ring tones to play. Instead it makes a sound in the ear, but when im driving around or somewhere quite noisy, i miss a lot of calls. Thats the only downside, but i haven't really tried remedying the problem, maybe i should,..

This skipping is not the issue of BT headset, but your hermes.

If you are listning from micro SD card, defragmenting the card helps.

I'm sorry for asking, but how do you get SRS WOW HD that comply with A2DP?

Also did you have Track skipping on WMP with Bitpool as large as 80(hex)?

Thanks,
