View Full Version : [Solutions] HTC Homeplug problems

The new HTC Homeplug looks really good, but there are several issues with it, which I propose to discuss in this thread.
Adding new weather sources
1. Go to http://wwwa.accuweather.com/world-city-list2.asp (update: try also http://htc.accuweather.com for those having trouble getting their cities to work) and enter your city under "Find an International Location by Name" (the top box) and click Go.
2. Click on the city you want in the results
3. Copy the zipcode query string from the URL, e.g. Coventry, UK is "EUR|UK|UK001|COVENTRY" (don't copy the last pipe).
4. Open both HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml and _HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml from the \Windows folder and copy one of the other lines, replacing the data with the city name and the code from part (3).
It should look something like this:
<city name="Coventry, UK" locationcode="EUR|UK|UK001|COVENTRY"/>
5. Save the file back to the \Windows directory
6. Select your newly acquired city from the list!
This doesn't seem to work for everyone as it appears to be restricted to certain cities, no one is particularly sure why yet. If after following these steps you get an error downloading data then it probably does not support the city code you entered. To find your city look here: http://htc.accuweather.com
Weather not updating
No solution yet
Photocontacts in the applications
See Vijay's solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1312528&postcount=59
(See screenshot atatched to this post)
You can also use the same approach to use VJSMS and VJEmail to open SMS and emails to your contacts.
Making it smaller
The biggest issue (pun intended) for me is the size of it - there isn't room for much else on the today screen. I know the idea is that it is thumb friendly, and it is, but I would like to make it a little smaller. I've looked through the reg and can't find anything to do this, nor any options anywhere. Probably requires decompilation / impossible.
If you have any ideas / solutions to these problems, or more problems of your own, post them below. I will try and keep the first thread updated, if you have a solution PM me so that I don't miss it.
Thanks

With the Today plugin there's no need to use the "No unread messages" plugin, since they pretty much defeat each other, so there's one thing that can be removed to make more room. I'd like to see an MMS shortcut?
Oliy

I've removed the messaging plugin too.
With regards to the MMS counter, I think that because the SMS/MMS inboxes are now combined, it might count the cumulative total in the Unread SMS counter? I haven't tested it yet. I also want to find out what happens when I sync my texts to Outlook with Jeyo Mobile Extender, and how it treats MMS.

Yes, that is right. It is double things showing on the Today.

Make sure you update both xml files (one has a _ infront of the name) and make sure the _ file is read only after you save it, works for me

I have managed to put photocontacts in the Applications tab, see first post for details. Not particularly elegant but it works!

Question about icon(s): What are the dimensions? 32x32, or any size and it'll resize it automatically?
Oliy
12th June 2007, 01:14 AM
The original icon size in VJDialer.exe is 32x32 and 8 bit depth. I managed to replace it with 64x64 pixels and 24 bit colour depth with Resource Hacker so you can have good quality photos. They show up a fixed size on the app tab though.
I'm pretty sure you can use whatever size icon you want, but 64x64 was noticeably better quality than 32x32.
ronfin44
12th June 2007, 01:27 AM
1. Create icons (*.ico) for all the photo contacts you want using GConvert or similar icon creator.
2. Extract VJDialer.exe from VJPhonetools and open it with Resource Hacker.
3. Open the Icon > 1 folder and right click on 2057, which is the icon
4. Select "Replace resource" and replace it with one of the icons you made earlier
5. Save the .exe with a new filename, e.g. contactName.exe
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for each icon you have created.
7. You should now have a set of exes which each have your contacts' photo. Copy these to your phone, for example "\Program Files\Phonetools".
8. Create shortcuts to each of these exes and place them somewhere in \Windows\Start Menu. I use \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Speed dial".
9. Go to the HTC Homeplug and add new button. Select your photo contacts!
Can you simplify these? For some reason it didn't work. I was able to add the shortcut, but wasn't the same. Didn't show an icon I made and showed me an error

Sorry to be a pest. Just not grasping using the Resource Hacker. I followed the steps, but I'm missing something. Is there a laymans version or a cheat-cheat for dummies? lol

I didn't explain it very well, here is an alternate explanation:
Create icons for all your contacts out of pictures
1. Use GConvert or similar to open an image file and save it as an icon eg contactName.ico.
2. Do this for each contact you want to display.
You now have an icon file displaying each of your photo contacts
Create a series of VJDialer.exe files each with an icon of your photo contact
1. Use Resource Hacker and open VJDialer.exe from VJ's cab
2. In the pane on the left, click on "Icon" to expand it
3. Click on "1" below "Icon" to expand that
4. The object below "1" is the icon, right click on it and select "Replace resource"
5. Select one of the icon files you created earlier
6. "Save as" a new name, for example contactName.exe
You now have an instance of VJDialer.exe with the photo for an icon for each of your photo contacts
Create links to the exes in the start menu
1. Bring up the context menu on one of the exes and "Create shortcut"
2. Edit the shortcut to include the phone number of that contact as documented on Vijay's website
3. Copy the shortcut to the \Windows\Start Menu directory.
4. Do this for each instance of exe
5. Add all your contacts to HTC Homeplug
ronfin44, just have a play around with it, one or two of my icons didn't work properly the first time I tried, if in doubt try another icon just in case.

Thanks bo. I opened VJ's dialer shortcut in Notepad and did a quick edit of it so it would dial a specific number, but now I'm gonna try your instructions. :)

my icons etc work fine. ...the only issue is when im recieving a sms through the plam threader the plugin cant reconize that i recieved a sms. Is it because its through the threader emails etc show up but my guess is because im using the plam threader.
ronfin44
12th June 2007, 02:04 AM
I'm stuck on how to edit the exe once I make it, like how do I add the number? Not too clear on VJ's website. It shows the example, but what do I use? When I tried it in Notepad it gives me an error when I try to Launch it:
No recipient found!
Format eg:
VJDialer123
Please Donate! etc etc:confused:

Not sure if this is part of the new Touch stuff, but the new battery icon in the top bar (in line with the start button) blocks the time/date from showing where it normally would.
Is there a way to remove this icon so the time and/or date can be displayed there?
ronfin44
12th June 2007, 02:29 AM
hahaha I figured it out! I'm an ass! I kept selecting the wrong icon in the menu, and NOT selecting the shortcut! lol Thanks for all your help guys! -fin
Oh, I make awesome icons if anyone wants some! :p

Since this weather thing is probably made to work in the UK and not the US, I just set my city to Miami, where I am, then went to the menu area under weather options to the Automatic Download area then checked off both the Download weather data automatically and Download when roaming. Downloading new weather information in the US did not work until I had checked off the Download when roaming. After I did this, the unit said, attempting to download weather information and it did, very well.
I hope this works for you guys having problems with this plugin. That's my 2 cents.

The new HTC Homeplug looks really good, but there are several issues with it, which I propose to discuss in this thread.
Adding new weather sources
1. Go to http://wwwa.accuweather.com/world-city-list2.asp and enter your city under "Find an International Location by Name" (the top box) and click Go.
<city name="Coventry, UK" locationcode="EUR|UK|UK001|COVENTRY"/>
5. Save the file back to the \Windows directory
6. Select your newly acquired city from the list!
Thanks for this advice.
But I don't know how to edit these files since I don't have an XML editor on my phone and the Windows directory is hidden when I browse it on my PC (using SyncCenter on Vista).
So can anyone tell me how to edit these files?
Cheers.

The weather panel is actually an adaptation of the Vista XML weather gadget.
Here's a bit from the code project explaining this (note the eerie similarities for the Current Conditions icons).
http://www.codeproject.com/gadgets/vistaweatherwidget.asp?print=true
I haven't looked at it enough to adapt it to display XML location codes, but I suspect that doing this will resolve the issues some are having with the OP technique for finding these...

I can confirm that this certainly seems to be an issue with a limitation to VERY large cities. For instance, I can only get Detroit MI and Flint MI to work but not other relatively big cities like Saginaw and / or Midland. /shrug
The same thing happens in spb weather as well. No luck with cities smaller than FLINT which is very large. The Tonaya programs works nicely but I must say... i really like this htc plugin.... if only the weather would work :D

Anyone else notice that the weather does not change the day it displays until you update? For example, today is Wednesday but the weather plugin is still showing the weather for Tuesday and will do so until I update, even though it has the data for the next couple of days.
This and a few other problems are making me think of getting rid of this plugin, nice though it is.

The weather is working fine, I am able to update via 3G or GPRS. Disabled autoupdate. Would like to know if we can set it to update at a specified time (ie in the morning or something) - checking the registery there is only autoupdate and update while roaming. Would also be nice that once it has finished updating that it close the data connection.
Any ideas?

Guys, I've been off planet for a little while, missed all this, although I think I've already been in email contact with some of you guys about this already.
Does the HomePlug thing only launch .exes, not .lnks? I presume that that's the difficult here. It's good that the current VJDialer hack works, but I may have to think about a more elegant solution for you.

Here is the issue I have, and I think it might be why some cities don't work.
The program is unable to update when there is an active GPRS connection. If the connection is active, it will give the message unable to download data.
I have to disconnect from GPRS, and then try to download the data, and that will works. Maybe one reason why people aren't able to see the cities they want is because there is a current data connection, and the program won't pull new data at all.
Anyone care to test this, I can't right now.

The reason why cities dont work is due to this
the update is being taking from
http://htc.accuweather.com
so a typical city would look like this
"http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM|US|NY|NEW YORK"
try it in your browser, now if only I can find the city that I need

Hi Vijay,
The homeplug will launch .lnks, which is fine, but for photocontacts I needed to make the icon of the .lnk into a photo of my contact. This necessitated changing the icon of the .exe, and creating an .exe for each contact.
WM6 doesn't allow you to change the icon for a .lnk, it just takes the icon from the program it points to. I've been trying to think of a better solution but haven't managed anything practical so far!

Re Changing the icon pointed to:
D'oh.
I didn't realise this was the problem, that's easy then. I've written many times on the format of the .lnk file, but it IS possible to specify a tertiary icon for a .lnk file,
ie you can have a .lnk shortcut file point to VJDialer.exe. This will normally take on the icon from VJDialer.exe.
However, it is possible to specify for the .lnk to take an icon from ANOTHER .exe (or dll!) so you can make you .lnk use icons from any other file.
To do this, make a .lnk shortcut to VJDialer.exe, and then load this .lnk file into Pocketword or Notepad or copy onto your pc and edit on notepad there.
So edit the .lnk directly and paste this in:
42#"\Program Files\vijay555\VJDialer.exe" 123?\Program Files\GreenSoftware\GSFinder.exe,0
What this says is, make a shortcut to
"\Program Files\vijay555\VJDialer.exe"
Dial the number
123
But then, the ? specifies another icon for the .lnk, ie:
?\Program Files\GreenSoftware\GSFinder.exe,0
means, use the first (0 = first) icon in GSfinder.exe as the icon for this .lnk.
You may need to restart your PPC to see the effect, but probably not.
The VJDialer.lnk will now have the icon for GSFinder!
Have a look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=880160&postcount=4) for more info, and also an icon viewer to find the icon offsets (they are not logical! They will not all be like 0,1,2, some will be -173 etc! Use the icon viewer to find out).
Note - I wrote about this in the past to use VJPhoneTools with CLaunch (a great launcher). In this way, as you've done above, make an icon dll file, and put each of your photo contacts' icons into that dll (I recommend using Microangelo Librarian to do this).
Then, use the above technique to make your .lnk files point to those icons in that dll. Thus, only 1 copy of VJDialer, and only 1 dll that contains all your photos in.

I think it might have to do with the ports. I'm going to install a firewall application and see the logs maybe i can find the problem.
I mean, for this weather feature to work it is obvious that we need to have at least the blackberry 19.99 plan on it. If you have the proxies with the tmobileweb then you know that is your problem.

even though gprs/edge is not direct it should be able to update. It's not really about being direct or not. its about the open ports.

yes with the ports activity logs. I will post them right now. Ok, here is the result:
IP address: 207.242.93.89
Port: 80
The communication with the accuweather is reached and established based on the logs. This was using gprs/Edge. I will test with activesync and i will post back soon.
I also noticed that the ip address directs to the accuweather website. the htc.accuweather.com and accuweather.com are just domain names for the same ip address.

You don't think that this has anything to do with the fact that our PDAs think they are roaming constantly? I know the plugin has an option for this, but maybe it doesn't work quite right, especially if others can update via GPRS?
The plugin uses standard web services to get its data. You confirmed this with port 80. I don't think its a port issue.

Can I just wade into this weather thing too please?
Looks to me like some locations definitely aren't supported by the HTC domain on AccuWeather. My home (Greenwich, London, UK) for instance:
HTC Link: http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=EUR|UK|UK170|Greenwich
ForecastFox link: http://forecastfox.accuweather.com/adcbin/forecastfox/weather_data.asp?metric=1&location=EUR|UK|UK170|Greenwich
Go to either of these on your browser, and you'll see that despite having the same location code, the HTC domain returns a blank result. Admittedly that doesn't help anyone who has successfully connected once or twice, but for those who have *never* successfully connected to their custom location using HTCHome, that nasty HTC domain may be where the problem lies.

When i'm in the 3G area I do get the 3G icon, but when I leave it goes back to the connected wlan icon, both with wlan turned off! I was running Faria's customized v.1, and this morning flashed to Lsvw's new .3, got the same exact results with both roms. Anyone have any suggestions?

No, it is not port 1047. I have tested an application through this port and it works fine. The weather fowards through port 80 as I stated in my last posts from the firewall log. I dont think the ports are the problem. I think its more about the encapsulation. It reaches the destination but it does not get an ACK (acknowledgment) back. It stops at some point.

SYMPTOMS
Attempting to digitally sign a file using Signcode.exe results in the following error:
Unable to sign the program xxxxx: (0x80070057)
CAUSE
The current version of Signcode.exe that ships with the ActiveX SDK, Ms Authenticode(IE4) and MS Authenticode(IE5) tools is unable to sign 16-bit files.
RESOLUTION
One workaround is to wrap the 16-bit file in a .cab or a self-extracting executable, which can then be digitally signed using Signcode.exe.

No fix, just testing results for T-Mo USA weather problem.
One guess I thought it might be is that requests coming from T-Mo's domain suffix were being blocked by Accuweather. Either by mistake, or intentionally.
So, I simply put in the full URI into my browser while connected via EDGE.
http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM|US|CA|FRESNO
(I'm assuming that's the address the program would use.)
Result: It pulled up the xml file, so there's no blocking going on, "unless" the HTC weather program is sending a different header than the PIE and they're blocking that. I really doubt it, but that is a possiblity, but I doubt it.
It is an interesting problem as when I'm otherwise connected via USB/Sync, or WiFi it connects without problem. (That connection does not go through T-Mobile) My guess is that the problem lies with the header and T-mo's Proxy.

Hi,
As mentioned in post #1 the size of the HTC Home plugin is too big, however a work around might be to allow the plugin to scroll rather than being fixed at the top - does anyone know if this is possible? Also, is there anyway to remove the scroll bar down the side - it is in the way and does not add any value IMHO.

It only picks up shortcuts in the programs start menu. Put a shortcut for any program you want in the start menu and it will then show up as being selectable in the HTC Home menu

I found that... Further investigation showed that I'd broken the xml files. You can tell this pretty easily by getting them on your PC and double clicking them. If they open in Internet explorer looking exactly as they should, they are fine... what I found was editing them with wordpad affected the characters and they didn't open properly in IE. This made clicking the city name not work too.
Once you get the files to open in IE, try editing with Notepad instead.

OK in regards to my previous post about removing the scroll bars on the today screen and allowing the HTC home plugin to scroll - in case anyone is interested I found a solution.
1. To minimise the impact of scroll bars by shrinking them - be aware this does affect all applications, but I found that to be beneficial too as with a Hermes you always have the scroll wheel.
Change the thickness of scrollbars
HKLM\System\GWE\cxVScr = 6 (DWORD decimal)
The default is 13 - pick a number, I found 6 to be right for me.
Change the length of scrollbar arrow buttons
HKLM\System\GWE\cxHScr = 6 (DWORD decimal)
The default is 13 - pick a number, I found 6 to be right for me.
2. To enable the HTC plugin to scroll instead of being fixed at the top.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\HTC Home
Change 'Type' from 5 to 4
PS. if you want to change the horizontal scroll bars in other applications then here are the keys:
Change the thickness of scrollbars for the horizontal (bottom) scrollbar:
HKLM\System\GWE\cyHScr = 13 (DWORD decimal)
Change the length of scrollbar arrow buttons for the horizontal (bottom) scrollbar arrows:
HKLM\System\GWE\cyVScr = 13 (DWORD decimal)
Hope this is of value to someone...

if you install the Black Shadow rom where the HTC homeplug is built-in, you'll get HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml and _HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml but if you install the homeplugin from the cab file available for download, you'll only get HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml.i don't know why but that's what i've found while experimenting with different ROMS.

Okay, just did this and it worked. PM'd 5 others and they all did the same thing successfully so here go's.
First pick a city in the list that is as close to your location as possible. I'm in Portland Oregon, USA, so I picked San Francisco.
Now Using Total Comander to access the registry go to:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Settings
Now this is the only tricky part. your going to change the data under location but the minute that you tap done it's gonna try to connect & download, YOU MUST TAP CANCEL TO PREVENT IT FROM FREAKING OUT.
I replaced San Francisco, US with Portland, US
Did what I just mentioned above and then proceeded to LocationCode
LocationCode was NAM|US|CA|SAN FRANCISCO
I changed it to NAM|US|OR|PORTLAND
clicked okay and closed everything up. went to my HTCHome screen and tapped on what now said portland, and sure enough, went right to portland's weather.. which naturally is raining... I hate this place. But I love you guys. So, after soft reset, everything was still working and now I can use my weather option.
Hope this helps everyone. And just so I can get it off my chest:
THIS NEWB READS THE THREADS!!!! I CAN'T THANK ALL THE DEVELOPERS, COOKS, AND EVERYONE HERE ENOUGH. IF I WERE RICH I'D CONTRIBUTE MORE BUT I'M STILL WORKING ON THAT.
NOOBS: Please... read the threads... it doesn't take that long and it really is informative, you pick a lot of tips & tricks as well as eventually get a good handle on how these people learned what they know through trial and error. Self taught or by a pro, it's the same process of elimination.
Keep up the good work everyone, see ya all around.
Peace

Hey everyone,
I don't know if this has been posted up somewhere but it doesn't matter. I haven't found it anywhere in the forums so I'll type it up anyways. Sorry if its already been discovered. I saw several people asking how to change the date so that it shows what day of the week it is, etc. so I thought this might be of some interest. I tried messing around with it a bit and found out some things. You can use HTCustom 1.5 created by Shadowmite to modify it. Since the date is taken from the system and it uses the Short Date format instead of the Long Date, I thought modifying this might work... and it did. I'm sure it does some registry edits, but I don't know exactly what its doing because I haven't really researched it.
When you open HTCustom, go to the "UI" tab (the second one from the left) and where it says "Short Date Format" enter in "dddd MM/dd/yyyy" (without the quotes, and capitalize the MM or the month wont show). Save the setting and soft reset. It will display something like "Friday 06/29/2007" when it boots back up instead of just "06/29/2007". You can use commas or spaces instead of dashes as separators, or do whatever you want. Typing "MMMM" will give you the full month (e.g. June). You can even type anything you want and it will show words other than the date. Pretty cool that its customizable. Don't know how many words or lines you can fit in there because I'm lazy to try it out and keep soft resetting. Those are my findings for now...
Thanks to Shadowmite for an awesome program!
**EDIT** I think you can have up to 30 characters saying what you want (including letters, spaces, symbols, etc.).

Good find Oldominion. One word of caution.... this will impact other applications that look to this registry entry for date / time format such as call history, windows explorer, Resco file explorer, etc.

I don't think it will mess things up if you put the long date format, but it might a little bit if you put words in there. I doubt it will screw things up but you can easily change it back to normal. If you decide to mess with it, do so with some caution.
**Has anyone figured out how to re-rout the MMS messages, Text messages, Missed calls icons on the first page to open a different program or open something else in the phone? Would be nice to be able to assign something else to these buttons... Thank you! :D

Is there anyway to get HTC home into a tab on spb shell? I have a ppc6800 and HTC Home doesnt act like a regular today screen plugin.
Has anyone tried this?

Stuff about changing date format on Homeplug screen......
I found where in the registry the short date format is stored, for those who want to change it directly, here's the information:
Taken from Modaco's Windows Mobile 5 Registry Tweaks Wiki (http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Windows_Mobile_5_Registry_Tweaks):
Change the Short Date Format
Applications may call upon the system to provide a 'short date format'. One such application is the Date/Time display in the taskbar, if set to show the date. To change the Short Date Format to show "Mon/2" (example):
HKLM\nls\overrides\SSDte = "ddd/d " (REGSZ string, no quotes)
Note 1: For more information on date/time formatting strings, see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/vbenlr98/html/vafmtuserdefineddateformats.asp
Note 2: All applications using the short date format will be affected by this change. Choose wisely

Hi,
could someone please send me the original "HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml" file from the Windows directory?
I've tried to set my own city and it didn't like it: now I can't even change the city in the plugin!!

Yes, I use HTC Home as a tab in Spb Shell - but it needs a registry change:
Look in:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\HTC Home
and
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\"Spb Mobile Shell"
Change 'Type' from 5 to 4
You can now go into the usual Today options and put the plugins in any order you want

[QUOTE=pkley;1311543]My time is displaying in 24hr format. In the Start bar it displays correctly, but not HTC. Any ideas?QUOTE]
Anyone have a solution to this? I would like the time displayed with am/pm also just like it is in the top bar of my TyTN?
I thought that I saw someone with a screen shot like that. Just can't find out how to change it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has nobody figured out a way to change the time screen buttons, i.e. messaging, voicemail, missed calls. I use the threaded sms program and have to keep an extra line on my today screen for the sms since this plug does not work properly with it. I poked around with reg edit but don't know enough to experiment without possibly messing up my device. I feel like there should be a link or something easy somewhere just to make the button point to threaded sms instead of messaging, but for the life of me, I cannot figure it out. Please help!!!

Have already searched the forum but haven't found an answer yet
How can I customize/change the buttons in the HTC Home Plugin? I want to change the small buttons that call the battery screen, the backlight settings to the programs that I call/use most.
Also is there a way to make the weather channel update information using Wifi Only? I don't have a unlimited plan for my 3G downloads and I want the weather information to come only by wifi.
Thanks
