My Prophet ran out of battery today, and switched itself off. It now refuses to accept the PIN that I've had set, even without a SIM. I've heard that this is a known bug.
I have backups of most of the important data, but before I go hard-reset the phone, is there a workaround?

First ... we cant tell any thing ... if we doesnt know what OS you have!
The most Reset/Reboot Problems are ... setup your device and switch your Prophet off and on!! This is importent for unloading the registry hives back to the flash rom!!!
If you doesnt do this after config ... you can lost all settings you have done.

Oops, apologies - it's late and I'm tired.
I'm using WM6 from PDAViet's ROM version 4.0.0.0.2.
I've reset the phone using the reset button, and also pulled the battery out, but it refuses any PIN that I enter.
Assuming the PIN is stored on the device somewhere, is it possible to back up the whole device to SD card, edit the backup to set the PIN to something I know, and restore? Or is there another way?

It's a common problem on ALL wm6 roms. I think I've seen a program out there dumps all the reg and settings to a file let u pick how long u need to change battery. then after wards it will restore these settings. Do a search on battery change or something like that.
