View Full Version : Changing the location for the weather

rklosinski

Has anyone figured out how to change the weather location reported in the HTC plugin. I live in an area not listed in the initial setup (Sacramento, CA) and I found a few registry entries to change, but it did not seem to change the display. In fact, I think I might have broke it!!

I somehow got it to work the second time i tried it. I first reset it back using the interface, then edited the registry and added my city. Works great.

You need to change the Location name and Location Code keys to match the format found on Accuweather.com for your City.
Press OK and save changes.

Backup your Registry first just incase.

<city name="Tampa, US" locationcode="NAM|US|FL|TAMPA|33601"/>

best i can tell the above is the correct syntax for getting cities in the list but aside from the above city and a couple of MAJOR cities i cannot get this to work on any smaller cities or towns. anyone come up with anything else?

I'm unable to change my weather city to Holiday, FL 34691 myself...tried a couple different variations, but it's just not holding.

So, I'm wondering...there are a FEW bigger US cities not included in this AccuWeather plugin app that HTC is using - when the phones are officialy released in N. America in the (hopefully) near future, will these cities be added as supported options? I mean, no Denver? Tampa?...but St. Petersburg...!?!?

Denver works fine for me. I was upset I couldn't get more specific and use Boulder or Superior though.

Hi all

Quite simple to change the defined weather cities. Just download a registry editor like Mobile Registry Editor (http://www.breaksoft.com/Download/MRE/MobileRegistryEditor.zip) which allows you to edit the registry from your PC using ActiveSync. Then go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Se ttings

And change the Keys Location and LoctionCode to the new city. To know the city code find it on http://www.accuweather.com/.

Figured it out!!!

You need to go to the WORLD accuweather not the US or the UK version!!

http://www.accuweather.com/world-index.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0

Then in the url is the EUR|UK|UK109|Blackpool which you need!

Update: It appears that only certain locations work....ie blackpool doesn't =[

Sam.Yes, surprisingly some codes doesn't work with the weather plugin. You can check it with this url:
http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=EUR|UK|UK109|Blackpool
Just replace the code. If this return more than <weather>
<copyright>2007 AccuWeather, Inc All Rights Reserved.</copyright>
<usage>HTC Pocket PC Weather Forecast</usage>
</weather> you can use the code on your mobile.
e.g. http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=EUR|DE|GM011|Essen works ("Essen, DE" in the select box)

Try a bit until you find a working code for city near to you, change the registry value to this code but type your city in the name field :)
This way one can show the weather for any city ;)

Hello, quick questions guys :)
WHen you enabled the weather widget, can you set the refreshes or is it each time you click on it ?
My second question would be, do you know how many Kb it takes to refresh the weather ?

Sorry for my english, hope you understand, thanks!

thanks all!! you solved my problem!!!

My touch is a bit strange that the city list seems corrupted. When I select "Hong Kong" the weather of a unknown city is showed (I can't imagine HK today is just around 10 degree C.)

And from all your help, I found the city database of HK was wrongly mapped to a city in Russia. I just change the setting as instructed and it works fine now!

Good question. In the configuration you can only set automatic/manual.

Very few. On my phone it's seems to use something like 4bytes per session (maybe...)

Valentin.H
19th July 2007, 04:37 PM
Ok, so it's really nothing, let's say you refresh it 2 times a day (which is enough i guess), 4Kb/day, 30 days/month, that's like 120Kb tops per month, this is really cool :) (I was asking because in france, with my phone company, you have limited data transfert per month, 60Mb, which is not that much).
Thanks.

nottingham in Nottinghamshire is EUR|UK|UK189|NOTTINGHAM however when I altered the code to this ... it doesn't work, I get an unable to download data error.

However with a little reg rummaging I discovered that when changing in the app both London and Manchester have nearly identical codes EUR|UK|UK001|cityname despite the fact that the accuweather codes are EUR|UK|UK124|LONDON and EUR|UK|UK189|NOTTINGHAM.

So I changed my Touch code to EUR|UK|UK001|NOTTINGHAM and it seems to work I certainly get different weather from London Village and God's own City. can anyone else replicate this?

Download and use the free trial of resco file explorer

Make sure you can see system files in the options

Browse to the windows folder. There are 2 files

HH_0409_Weather_Cities
_HH0409_Weather Cities (Leave this one where it is)

Make a copy of the first one onto your PC (May have to copy to a storage card, and make it writable first.

Use an XML Editor to add whatever cities and codes in that are applicable to you. (I've attached one for all the UK Cities)

Copy it back to your device (Storage card) Make it a system file and read only.

Make the version in the /Windows folder writable, then copy the new one over the old.

Thank you! In the windows folder I have just HH_0410_Weather_Cities (i think the number depends on rom version or localization), but I don't have the same file with "_" prefix. Anyway, I try to copy this file to my pc, add one location and copy it back. But I can't because original file is read only. You tell me to give write access to the file... how can I do this? the context menu has no "properties" item or similar, even if I try to remove "htc home" from the today pane.

If I try to access this file directly from my PC, I see that has "archive" flag, but not "hidden" or "read-only" flag.

I try to copy the file to my SD: neither in this location I can edit it...

Please help me!!
Thank you very much

p.s If I change my registry with the current location "Fossano" (the city where I live), I get an error when downloading weather info, even if this location is accessible from the website (the code is EUR|IT|IT012|FOSSANO)... do you know why?

Ok, steps to take

Download the trial of Resco Explorer and install.

Change the properties to include system files and hidden files.

Browse to /Windows and press and hold on the file HH_0410_Weather_Cities and change the properties so it is no longer read only.

Now you have 2 choices, copy it to your SD Card, then off to your PC for editing, or Copy my file with all the english cities over the top of it.

When editing be careful. I use an XML Editor, Wordpad tends to mess up the xml file, and notepad saves the file as a .txt. Good way to check you haven't corrupted the .xml is to double click on it. It should open in Internet Explorer, and should have all of the cities in. If its not complete or opens in notepad you know you've messed up the file.

Hope these extra instructions help. I'm looking to create a worldwide file if it helps, I'll post it if I get the time.

1. Visit AccuWeather.com - http://www.accuweather.com/world-index.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0
2. Find your city and bring up its weather forecast in your browser.
3. Look at the URL and copy the location code from the end of the URL (will look something like locCode=OCN|AU|TAS|HOBART)
It should consist of 4 sections eg: OCN|AU|TAS|HOBART (Region|Country|State|City)
4. Go to the windows directory on your PPC
5. Copy the HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml to your desktop
6. Open in Notepad and insert an XML tag in to the list.
For Hobart, it would look like this:
Code:

@roatto:
you HAVE to download th trail of resco explorer, that allows you to right-click a file, select properties and uncheck "hidden" and "system" flags.

@m15chief:
my problem is that I want to add my city (or replace a standard one). I search for FOSSANO (my city) in accuweather, and this is the code I get on the URL bar: EUR|IT|IT012|FOSSANO
In the website it works, I see the correct weather forecast.
But, if I add this location to the xml file (that is correct to IE and Firefox) when I select with my touch, it says that "weather forecast can't be downloaded" (sorry for my poor translation ITA->ENG).
If I select, for example Torino (is a standard location in the list), I can download the weather data! So I think the problem is just with MY city, not the other.

Now I try to replace a city with my data, and continue to post.

Thank you all!!

<city name="Torino, IT" locationcode="EUR|IT|IT012|TORINO"/>

to this

<city name="Torino, IT" locationcode="EUR|IT|IT012|FOSSANO"/>

And, when I try to download the information, I always have the same problem.

On the website, I see that if I search my location I find it, but it's not listed on this page
http://www.accuweather.com/world-favorite-cities.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&region=eur

Oh please, I would be so happy if I could do this. WeatherZone has an applet type system for weather now, perhaps an application can be written to use this type of data. I suspect that the HTC app can't be changed however.

Is there an XML feed with weather info from your local meteorological bureau? If so, follow the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319187

nottingham in Nottinghamshire is EUR|UK|UK189|NOTTINGHAM however when I altered the code to this ... it doesn't work, I get an unable to download data error.

I get similar results to you!

Trying to get Oxford to work (EUR|UK|UK192|OXFORD), however it reports the Cannot download error, yet changing it to EUR|UK|UK001|OXFORD seems to work fine AND from what I can tell reports the weather as per the site shows for Oxford. ???

code form AccuWeather is EUR|UK|UK187|Northampton

It didn't work so did what alasdairford mentioned and just changed the city name, so had EUR|UK|UK001|NORTHAMPTON.

I assume I need to change the entry in "Location" to Northampton, UK as although its updated the weather it still says London, UK?

I changed the weather Location 'name' and then the weather picture changed after an update, which made me think I'd screwed something, but on checking on Accu again that had also changed, so I defintely know its all working :)

This is a great forum :D

Hi Guys,
Having checked the url on AccuWeather.com for my home town I get two variations on the same thing, neither of which work:
Code=EUR|UK|UK218|Burton+upon+Trent
and:
Code=EUR|UK|UK218|Burton%20upon%20Trent|&u=1 (I dropped the &u=1)

I also tried changing the UK code to UK001 as suggested earlier, but still didn't work, just get the "unable to retrieve data" message.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mick

Check the code if it's correct, if there is a mistype in the file it doesn't load.

(best guess is the location you edit)

Thanks Re-Mi. I appreciate your help. I do not think that the code is the reason as I downloaded the xmlfile from Page 7 Item 67, copied it to the windows directory and that did not work either. Can you think of anything else that may have gone wrong?

Well, maybe your region code is different from the one you've downloaded.

Mine is (the netherlands) HH_0413_WeatherCities.xml
English is HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml

Maybe you should take a look at your original one and change the name of the custom one

Would just like to say m15chief is a LEGEND. I have now been able to get the weather working for my location. I have copied all the UK ones into the existing xml file so can now get weather wherever I am.

Didn't think for a second i'd be editing registry on my third day of owning a new phone :eek:, although needs must :D

Would be good to get a worldwide one working tho.

I had edited the XML file containing the information for the Weather, and had my weather working.

I then updated to the 5 Tab Plugin which had a fix for the weather, which i belive overwrites the XML file.

My weather now will not update at all. I have tried resetting the phone but still nothing

Anyone got any suggestions

Pete

Hi! I've tried both my HTC Shift & x7510 changing HH_0409_Weather_Cities, replaced ok by total commander after editing my city location info
<city name="Buraydah, SA" loca="MEA|SA|SA000|BURAYDAH" land="Saudi Arabia"/>

But fail to update: Unable to retrieve data for selected city. Select here to retry. This's the message I got... :confused:
