Ken Barwick is reporting new offical firmware release for the Vodafone UK V1605. His blog is here:

http://blogs.conchango.com/kenibarwick/archive/2007/01/17/Vodafone_2700_s-v1640-_2800_HTC-Hermes_2F00_-TyTn_2900_-get_2700_s-an-upgrade.aspx

And the software is on rapidshare:

http://rapidshare.com/files/38302476/RUU_Hermes_VF_UK_2.07.161.1_6275_1.32.00.00_108_Sh ip.exe.html

Can any of you more techinical minded folk check it out - is it an offical upgrade? (can't find anything on the offical Vodafone websites). Too nervous to try it myself as my phone is a company phone. Anyway if someone wants to look into it and report back.

Cheers

Barney

Well I have gone ahead and done it - got too impatient to wait for someone else to check it out.

The upgrade went smoothly -

Stats as follows

After

ROM Version 2.07.161.1
ROM Date 02/06/07
Radio Version 1.32.00.00
Protocal Version 32.65.7020.09W
AKU 3.3

Now will rebuild with software I had before and test. Will keep you informed but all seems to be working ok so far.

Cheers

It's the same rom that came (installed) on my 1605. It's very good. Battery life is very good. BT on, wifi with a fair amount of use, backlight up full, 30-60 minutes of calls etc... and the battery lasts around 48 hours. Beats my T750v by around 36 hours.

Hello,

I own a sim free TYTN and use a Vodafone sim. If I update my TYTN with this ROM, will I then be able to install the iminent HTC ROM update without any problems? Will the Vodafone ROM lock my phone to their network?

Thanks.

Sounds like it is an official ROM then - can someone let an admin know to possibly update the relevent WIKI page. Wonder why Voda are using it for newer phones but haven't issued it as an update for exisiting phones?

Must say - no problems so far - all software seems to be working ok.

Since upgrading I had a problem with accessing my storage card. Appears this is a known problem with newer ROM upgrades (doesn't happen with AKU 2.x version) Have applied a reg workaround posted in other threads. If that works great if not I will go back to my previous ROM (AKU 2)

Well the issue with my storage card is still happening therefore I suspect I will revert to my previous Vodafone firmware AKU 2.3 - Anyone know whether reverting will be a problem as I read somewhere that the bootloader or something like that will not allow you to revert to a previous rom. Anyone know if this is an issue?

Loaded this on my v1605. (Well, actually I extracted the ROM, Ext ROM and Radio so as to continue running with Hard-SPL.)

Anyway, works fine for me. But the protocol version is actually 32.65.7020.09H (i.e. with HSDPA). I think the previous Vodafone radio had a protocol ending in W.

Also I had some problems with my storage card but I found that putting into a card reader and re-formatting as FAT32 on a Windows computer did the trick. The card was originally FAT16. (Curiously a FAT32 format on my Mac failed to fix it...)

Initial impressionis AKU 3.3 is fantastic and I'll be sticking with this ROM. New radio also seems to give me much better reception and call connection reliability, so far. I might try radio 1.38 in due course once I have a better idea of how this one is performing.

Thats weird because I just checked and mine definately has a "W" at the end not an "H". Wonder how that can be?

As for reformatting it as FAT32 - how long has that been workign for now. Seems some of these fixes like the reg fix or the FAT 32 fix work for some people and not for others

Okay, I found my first problem with this firmware: Vodafone Mail (242) voicemail icon alerts no longer work. The SMS alert doesn't seem to come through either. So no audio/vibrate alert either. D'oh!

On the other hand there is a new "VMail" Today screen plugin which does show you how many voicemails you have waiting. I guess the software is automatically processing the SMS alerts rather than treating them as normal voicemail messages. Which is an improvement (I always resented having to delete the old SMS notifications) but I'd still like to have the option of having an audio/vibrate alert for new voicemails (useful when you have call waiting disabled) as well as the spool icon which saves on Today screen space.

The protocol version thing is wierd. I definitely have HSDPA now - an "H" logo appears in place of the 3G one when I use data. Are there perhpas two variants of this ROM image circulating? I got mine from the Rapidshare link above.

Hey guys...

Sorry I was late on responding to this...

I can say that this ROM IS the official one, Vodafone are still trying to work a way on advertising and delivering you the ROM's...

On the case of the H and 3G logo's on the top bar. This is to indicate that you have HSDPA enabled coverage or 3G coverage.

I personal haven't updated to this version due to a number of reasons, so you'll have to let me know if you can make calls when the H is shown, in the States I could with the old ROM but not over here...

As for the Voice Mail, if that is the case removing them after delivery is a school boy error!!! tsk, tsk!!!

Did you allow the Ext ROM to run? I believe that VF use a cab in there to turn on the voice mail notifications (part of the service indiciation security policy)

Yes, I installed the new VF Ext ROM and allowed it to run. I might take a look at it's contents to see if I can manually run it again. (Not keen on doing a hard reset as it took me a couple of hours to reconfigure all my apps and seetings after the ROM update.)

You're right! I can't make calls when the H is shown! After several attemps H is replaced by 3G and call goes through.

Incidentally it only seems to go into HSDPA mode as and when I initiate a data connection. During the course of the connection it will often switch back to 3G and, without fail, does so after the connection is dropped (manually). Is this normal behaviour?

Previously (with the factory-provided Vodafone ROM) I didn't get an 'H', and my ROM version ended in W, implying no HSDPA. Nevertheless I did have SetHSDPA enabled using the fit4cat HTweakC and there were often times (in 3G coverage) when I couldn't make calls until after several attempts.

Barneyabz

I definitely have the W version. Got it from rapidshare, no idea why it is different to yours. No problems with making calls. I used set hsdp to on but the icon still says 3g however downloads at 1.2mb so definitely switched on. No problems at all with voice mail icon, works completely as normal. Only issue is still with the storage card. Drives me bananas.

I rang Vodafone about the voicemail problem. They've said they'll send me a replacement handset on Monday! Will be interesting to see what the firmware version on that one is.

ma499
06-07-2007, 10:12 PM
Okay, this is really wierd. I tried doing a hard-reset and now the voicemail problem is gone! Plus I checked the Device Information and the Radio ROM version has changed to the 'W' version. As with Barneyabz there is no 'H' icon to indicate HSDPA but now calls can actually be made when HSDPA is enabled.

Why should the hard reset have made any difference?

ma499
06-07-2007, 10:26 PM
And the VMail today screen plugin no longer works now that the spool icon and text alerts are working again. I really don't understand.

ma499
06-07-2007, 11:38 PM
Okay I've done some more investigating... I flashed another Radio ROM (1.43, Protocol 'H') and found I had the same voicemail and HSDPA calls problem. I then did a hard reset and found it was fixed with the protocol (and behaviour) had changed to 'W'.

I can only assume that there is some customisation in the extended that changes this. Yet I ha dprevious tried manually running the auto-customisations from extended rom without any joy.

I might do some further digging. (Probably not just yet, however!)

Gld to hear it seems to be working ok for you. What about the storage card, any issues with it disappearing? (what is your card make and size?)

No problems with the storage card. Mine is a Kingston 512 MB. As I say, I reformatted it to FAT32 using Windows XP (not a 'quick' format, default cluster size). The card was originally FAT16.

I actually use the storage card to flash updates. Takes less than 5 mins :-D

Incidentally, are you sure you are getting no call problems whilst an HSDPA data connection is active? I thought this was resolved but realised that it isn't. I also now find that the 'H' or 'W' in the protocol version simply reflects whether you have HSDPA running (and not whether it is supported in the Radio ROM). I also found that SetHSDPA only takes effect after you stop and restart the radio - hence why I earlier thought it was working.

I've read round and it seems to be a problem with many networks (including Vodafone UK). Apparently T-Mobile will drop down to normal UMTS when there is a voice call and then go back up to HSDPA after the call is finished.

Barneyabz
07-07-2007, 08:28 PM
I am using a 2GB sandisk - seems to be a real issue with that card - but never had a problem with the old AKU 2.3

Never seem to have probelms with the calls. But never ever get an H showing usually just shows 3g but when I run a download test it comes in about about 1.2mb per sec so HSDPA mustbe switched on (or else the test is no good!) Unfortunately where I live I get a crap sognal (pretty much a dead zone) so will have to wait for Monday when at work and I will run another download test at another site.

I'm not sure that any of those online tests are really reliable. Try wiping the Internet Explorer cache first or see whether disabling HSDPA makes any difference to the result.

Probably more reliable to use the Field Test app to see if HSDPA is working:

I suspect Vodafone's response might be that they don't support HSDPA on handsets yet...

Anyway do tasks sort properly for you with this new ROM? No-one's responded to my thread on the matter :-

I take it the task sorting bug is fixed in WM6 then? Do you know if it's also fixed in any WM5 AKU later than 3.3.0? I've seen ROMs with AKU 3.3.1 and 3.5.2.

First, would you please upload here or PM for my email to send.
Second, how did you backup your ROM image.
I bought a new vodafone V1605 with vodafone sim that I expect to arrive tomorrow and would like to make an image back up before I do any upgrade/modifications.

Just uploaded now on to rapid share:

llbasha, I didn't backup my device's ROM. When I said I had a backup I meant of the file that I originally downloaded from the earlier download links. I think there is a section on the wiki about how to backup your device ROM but it doesn't look very simple. I didn't bother myself as my device's original ROM version was already available as a downloadable image (on the wiki). If you get a new v1605 tomorrow you'll probably find it already has the lastest ROM image on anyway.

I received my new toy today. it has:
ROM Version 2.04.161.2
ROM Date 01/18/07
Radio Version 1.32.00.00
Protocal Version 32.65.7020.09W
OS 5.1.461 build 15671.3.3
Mode: HERM200
CID VODAP001
IPL-1.01
SPL-1.09
HTC Integrated Re-Flash Utility, Common Base Version : 1.50a S024
Device Name: H, Bootloader Version : 1.09
Built at: Nov 7 2006 22:59:17
CPU ID=0x41129200
Main CPLD version=0x5
Upper CPLD version=0x4
Main Board version=0x6
The phone received/shipped SIM unlocked already.

Is it worth it to do any upgrade?

ma499
01-08-2007, 09:42 AM
Your ROM version is slightly different but still AKU 3.3. I doubt it's worth the hassle of upgrading - unless you want to experiment with a non-Vodafone AKU 3.5 or WM6 ROM. Everytime you upgrade the OS you have to reset all your settings, re-install software, etc.

Radio 1.32 was good for me. I tried a couple of others (1.38 and 1.43) but went back to it. Currently testing 1.47 and seems very good so far - marginally better reception and phenomenally better battery life. Make sure you have Hard SPL installed though if you want to play with different Radios. I had a corrupt radio flash which would have bricked my device had I not had Hard SPL.

I am inclined to follow your advise but my v1605 is slow and takes long to boot and the 3G signal is week. Sound like your rom version is good. Correct me if I am wrong, since this is an official rom, can I flash it straight away or do I have to Hard-SPL-V7_2-10olipro first???

From my reading, it sound like anyone should first apply this Hard-SPL under any circumstances before doing ANY thing as a preventative measure.

On the other hand, you probably know there is a new HTC Official WM06 Rom released 02.Aug.2007 (3.54.255.3_6275_1.48.00.10) from here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/46467733/HTC_TyTN_WWE_3.54.255.3_6275_1.48.00.10_108.exe
This one I am willing to take my chance with. Now, for this I guess I have to do:
1- Hard-SPL-V7_2-10olipro then
2- HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a, and then
3- start using this TyTN rom ....
correct???

Or shall I just use the OS version with custom RUU posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1410956&postcount=82
I do not really want to over-write my ext-rom (I have made a backup of it anyway ... voda stuff .. you know).

Regards

ma499
05-08-2007, 07:42 AM
You're right. You don't *need* Hard-SPL to install the official ROM update, but it's still a very good idea in case it goes wrong. Hard-SPL was the first thing I installed before doing anything else with my v1605.

I can't comment on the WM6 ROMs as I've not tried any of them. The problem is that whenever you install an OS ROM update you have to backup and restore all your settings - which can get very tedious. I don't have much time to experiment at the moment so I am sticking with the Voda ROM which basically works (except for the Tasks sorting bug described earlier in the thread). I shall try WM6 when I have some time to experiment.

I'm not sure about your Custom RUU question / CID unlock question as I have never used a non-Vodafone OS ROM (only installed custom radios). I thought you did not need to CID unlock if Hard SPL was installed, but maybe I have misunderstood?

ma499
05-08-2007, 07:45 AM
If it's mainly 3G reception you are worried about try one of the radio upgrades. I'm currently happy with 1.47 but 1.50 is out now with good reports. You don't have to worry about backup/restore of any settings when flashing a new radio ROM. Just make sure you have Hard SPL since the radio upgrade is the one most likely to fail and brick your device.

llbasha
05-08-2007, 09:16 AM
Many thanks ma499. I already installed and configured my applications on my device and I can't be bothered to do it again. I would just keep everything as it is for now except for the Hard-SPL with new radio as you suggested.

By the way, since the phone is sim-free and the fact that the (custom) modified bootloader by Olipro (RUUWrapper.exe) permits the flashing of any ROM to the device (regardless of the CID), then HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a by pof is NO longer required.

i.e. I only need to Hard-SPL-V7_2-10 by Olipro then flash new 1.50 radio NBH file with the Modified_RUU_Updater_V4.3 by Olipro.

And I am pleased to say I have upgraded to radio 1.50. It is good for the 3rd day in all count.

Thanks again

Thanks guys! This site has been very helpful. As a novice to all this I was able to install the olipro bootloader and cook my own rom mixture. So now I am running my Hermes200 (Vodafone 1605) with
Bootloader:
IPL 1.04
SPL 2.3010.olipro

ROM Version 2.07.161.1
ROM Date 02/06/07
Radio Version 1.41.00.10
Protocol Version 32.74.7020.18W

Radio is much better!

Hopefully my problems (random disconnects) with the carkit Bluetooth connection with the original rom version are gone……

Try this method. I just updated my v1605 tonight with the very same rom from 2.04

1. use pimbackup to save your emails, contacts etc. http://www.dotfred.net/

2. hard spl before flashing (see wiki). http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_HardSPL

3. Use the SD Card technique as described in the WiKi. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing

4. Restore data with pimbackup.

Notes.
With this rom I finally got mms to work. Just select the payg options from connections/isp & wap.

Seems to have more storage space than 2.04

signal seems better, but I think this is wishful thinking as it's the same radio.

pimbackup didn't restore any pop3 email accounts/messages I had set up manually.

I too got error [260] when trying to update via usb but the sd card was very simple and safer (oops I've yanked the cable out).

hope it works

@jusmon

1. No idea about the error, but make sure you have flashed HardSPL first (see the wiki). I also recommend flashing from a microSD card rather than via USB.

2. The radio stack included in the 2.07 ROM is the same version as you already have, i.e. 1.32.00.00. If you want better reception try installing one of the newer radio ROM extracted upgrades (again see the wiki). I have tried most of the ROMs since 1.32 and settled on 1.47.00.10 (Vodafone UK, Greater London and Surrey). Radio 1.56.70.11 had even better reception but, alas, drained the battery much faster. YMMV.
