I've been having a problem which has caused me to have to hard reset 2 or 3 times lately, and I'm noticing an odd problem when I re-sync with my work laptop.
Even though I go into Settings and change the Device ID back to my 'normal' ID it seems to get over written at some point with another ID by Active Sync. Why does this happen?
Having read a few threads I'm guessing that this may be connected to the fact that the old profile for a device with that ID is still in the system. I had assumed that Active Sync would recognise the device and just re-sync, but maybe it can't cope with having an 'old' ID that is the same as a device that it has never synced with before.
So do I just need to delete the old partnerships on the PC, or do I need to do anything else?
thanks

Delete the old partnership....then redo your Device ID on the Hermes and try to sync.

OK, so.....
- I deleted the partnership from both the PPC and the PC.
- Then I changed the Device ID back to the name that I normally use.
- Rebooted both machines.
- Reconnected PPC to PC.
- PPC was detected as a 'new' device
- Sync went OK
- The Device ID on the PPC has changed again
- The PPC won't sync now, but it does connect properly as I can 'Explore' it
I've had a look on the PC in Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles and I can see two new folders.
- The first has the correct Device ID that I had entered into the device
- The second folder has a timestamp 5 minutes later than the first and shows the incorrect Device ID that my PPC has now been changed to
The name of the second folder is 'WM_xxxxxx' , where xxxxxx is my Windows username.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?
Aside from the fact that it's very annoying I'm also considering selling my MDA Vario II and getting a Treo 750. So I really want to understand whether this problem is related to my current device or some general problem with WM5.0 or ActiveSync.
The complete setup is:
T-Mobile MDA Vario II
Corporate Dell D620 laptop
Windows XP SP2
ActiveSync 4.1
I've seen some suggestions to upgrade ActiveSync in order to resolve other sync problems, but unfortunately that isn't an option, at least not until it becomes a tested update within our corporate environment.
I suspect that there is actually something wrong with my ActiveSync installation as I have a problem where I can never actually maximise the application. Eg. it starts up when the device is connected, and appears in the task bar. But neither selecting 'Open microsoft ActiveSync', nor clicking on the tab in the taskbar will actually open the window. I will try and get ActiveSync re-installed on my PC, but I'm fairly certain this will be v4.1 again, and I'm worried that it might create even more problems!!
