View Full Version : The only REAL guide to playing back Mobile YouTube videos

As has also been announced in my (latest) guide to playing back (non-Mobile) YouTube videos (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2009&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1) published some weeks ago, the YouTube folks have been working on a really mobile, non-flash-based version of their services and, as promised, have indeed come up with it some days ago. Even when it only contains very few clips (in general, only the most popular ones – for example, none of the not-that-popular but old clips I’ve searched for existed in there as of today), it’s been continuously expanded, which means it might become a real repository of all “real”, Flash-based videos.

As there is a lot of plain wrong or contradicting information and a LOT of hacks out there, all just confusing Windows Mobile users, I’ve decided to publish the one and only REAL guide to this question.

The new Mobile YouTube homepage is accessible at http://m.youtube.com/ from any Web browser, desktop or mobile alike. However, in order for the playback to work, you must use a browser accessible of passing control to external applications (in this case, the HTC Streaming Media player) because, when a Watch Video link is clicked (like the one in THIS (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/WatchVideoLink.bmp.png) screenshot), an external application, “Streaming Media”, will be invoked. This means you won’t be able to use, for example, the otherwise excellent and highly recommended Opera Mini. (Unfortunately, this also applies to the latest version, 4.0 beta.) This restriction, on the other hand, does NOT apply to the best Windows Mobile browser on both (Pocket PC and Smartphone) platforms, Opera Mobile. That is, you aren’t forced to use the built-in, in most respects inferior Internet Explorer Mobile.

First, some bad news (in addition to the fact that, currently, the mobile version of YouTube only has few converted videos).

You’ll need the HTC Streaming Media player, which only comes with WM6 Pocket PC Professional) devices, but NOT Smartphones – that is, WM Standard devices. On the latter phones, clicking Mobile YouTube links result in Windows Media Player’s being invoked – but in vain, because, after trying to connect (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/WM6PPCStreamingMedia2.bmp.png), it displays an error (screenshot HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/MobYoutubeVoxError.bmp.png) and HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/MobYoutubeVoxError2.bmp.png)).

Fortunately, this problem can be VERY easily fixed on both WM5 Pocket PC’s and Smartphones and WM6 Smartphones.

Streaming Media is a full application, which also means it has its own icon (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/WM6PPCStreamingMediaIcon.bmp.png) and is directly runnable. However, you will want to prefer starting it from your Windows Mobile Web browsers by simply clicking streaming links like those of Mobile YouTube.

You will need DIRECT Internet connection, as was the case with the well-known RealOne Player for Pocket PC. If you’ve ever tried to make the latter to play back streams (or, you’ve read my related article “How Can I Listen to/Watch RealOne Streamed Content (RealAudio/RealVideo) on my Pocket PC? (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=344&more=1)”), you know well enough you can only do this if you have a direct connection to the Internet: that is, in most cases, over mobile phone-based (GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA etc.) connections. Should you have a non-direct connection, you will see the “Failed to find network.” error message upon trying to play back streams (screenshot HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/WM6PPCStreamingMedia3.bmp.png)). Unfortunately, most Wi-Fi connections (unless they put you in a DMZ (demilitarized zone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demilitarized_zone_%28computing%29)), which is pretty rare) are unlikely to work and ActiveSync connections will NEVER work.

A quick note: I’ve thoroughly tested the latter by configuring Windows XP’s Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to forward UDP ports 1024...1044 as can be seen in HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/AllPortsRedirected.png) (20 ports were the smallest amount the client allows for as can also be seen in HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/AllPortsRedirected2.bmp.png); note that, when tested, I’ve ticked in all these checkboxes) and HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/udp1024.png). In vain: it just didn’t work.
If you DO have direct internet connections or would still want to give the client a try, do the following.

If you don’t have Streaming Media on your Windows Mobile handheld (because it’s WM5 only or a WM6 Smartphone and not a Pocket PC), get and install THIS (http://www.ramonshare.com/files/index.php?share=4&path=TOOLS%2FRvBCrS_HTC_Streaming_Media.cab) file. Note that if it doesn’t exist, you can get it from HERE (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/RvBCrS_HTC_Streaming_Media.rar) (make sure you unRAR the latter to get the CAB file). Also note that you can safely install the CAB file to a storage card.

Don’t listen to people that tell you to use other files – with them, you may end up having to, for example, import Registry scripts to create the necessary file / type associations so that Streaming Media can be invoked.

If you do have Streaming Media (or, have just installed it), just navigate to http://m.youtube.com/ and enjoy the videos.

Some example screenshots of showing all this in action (all taken by me on my QVGA and VGA WM5/ WM6 Pocket PC Phone Edition models and a WM5 176*220 HTC s310 (Oxygen) and a WM6 QVGA HTC s710 (Vox) Smartphones):

http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/MYoutubeOverDirectConnection.bmp.png
(WM6 VGA Pocket PC, officially shipped with Streaming Media, over GPRS – as can be seen, GPRS is just too slow to produce a decent image)

Now, three screenshots of models with the additionally installed Streaming Media:

http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/WM5QVGAPPCMYoutube.png
(WM5 QVGA Pocket PC over EDGE – decent playback)

http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/176220StreamingMedia.bmp.png
(WM5 176*220 Smartphone over EDGE – decent playback)

http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007YoutubeMobile/VoxStreamingMediaHack.bmp.png
(WM6 QVGA Smartphone over EDGE – decent playback)

Cool, eh? Nice to know even low-end Smartphones are able to play back these kinds of stuff, isn’t it?

Note that, in order to install the player on application locked MS Smartphones, you will need to unlock them. See my other, related articles on doing this – for example, THIS (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2004&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1).

What should you do if you get the "Failed to find network." error message?

Unfortunately, not much, but this also depends on your particular network settings.

If you're on a Wi-Fi network and you do have administrator rights to reconfigure the router(s), you can configure them to allow your mobile device to be in the DMZ - or, at least, configure UDP port forwarding (note that the latter didn't work in my tests as has also been mentioned above - this means DMZ may be the ONLY solution). Otherwise, if you use public Wi-Fi networks, you can't do anything.

If you're using a wireless (for example GSM) network, which doesn't support direct access, you can't do anything either. Your only choice is switching to another mobile phone network, which does. (About half of them do.)

Finally, don't forget that, even if you can't play Mobile YouTube videos, nothing is lost, except for the advantages of the 3GP streaming compared to the alternative methods:
Direct Flash video playback (with Opera Mobile) takes a LOT of CPU time and may have stuttering playback even on the fastest, 624 MHz Windows Mobile devices, let alone slower ones
Indirect video playback has an additional step requiring manual work including, at least, copying and pasting the URL of the given video clip. If they also employ transcoding (all solutions EXCEPT for the TCPMP-based playback, but the latter can't be used on MS Smartphones), the resulting video will be, in general, of lower quality and higher size than the original Flash video, which you don't necessarily want.

That is, you can still play regular YouTube videos. Either, as has just been explained, directly (with Opera Mobile 8.65- forget all the other browsers, particularly the latest, Flash-enabled, Technical Preview released in June of Netfront 3.4 - see my review of the browser for the why's), half-directly via (direct download, unfortunately, only works on PPC's and not Smartphones) or indirectly, using an online conversion service. I've elaborated on all these three alternatives in my past articles - make sure you check them out, should you need to rely on the "traditional" way of playback.

Additional info (you will NOT need to read them; the above tutorial should suffice. I only give you these URL’s so that you can see how much easier my tutorial is than trying to find out what to do when following community threads with millions of contradicting and/or misleading and/or outdated posts and hacks):

This means you don't have a direct IP. Nothing can be done - you'll need to use the alternate methods of playback.

Your particular Wii-Fi networks put your devide into a demilitarized zone and/or do UDP port forwarding; this is why it works. In usual Wi-Fi networks not using any of these tricks, it doesn't necessarily work.

My wifi works just fine as the above poster, im wondering is the device using uPnP since this is supported on the three wifi access points i have tested??

Just installed the StreamingPlayer to my PPC-6700. Upon executing the program, I get the error...

"The file 'StreamingPlayer' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file"

Tried reinstalling it a few times, and even changing from 'device' to 'storage card' and get the same results.. any suggestions?

I downloaded and installed the HTC Streaming Media Player (RvBCrS_HTC_Streaming_Media.cab) just fine on my 8525 with WM5. But when I tried to watch a video from m.youtube.com it connects and buffers until it gets to about 97% then hangs a bit then goes back to the previous screen. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem. I've tried removing and reinstalling the Streaming Media Player and installing it to main memory and the storage card but am stuck here no matter what. Any ideas?

Did you try playing with the buffering params - for example, lowering them from 7s to, say, 3s?

Unfortunately, this kind of RTSP connections need a directly visible IP (or, port forwarding), which isn't supportred by many GSM operators. This is why RealOne Player refuses to work too.

Hm, I'm starting to think this just doesn't work on all WM5 devices. I've double checked that the cab file installed the aforementioned files and registry additions, and it seems like it has. So there is still some missing component.

Yup, tried that too. All it did was buffer up to the high 90% faster, then the same delay and return to the previous screen. It's so weird that I seem to be the only one having this problem. FWIW I have upgraded the ROM on this HTC to the latest version (but not to WM6 since that's not out yet. Grrr.)

I suppose I could use an unofficial WM6 ROM for this phone, but I'd rather not. Guess I'll have to wait. Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. A stitch in time saves nine... <sigh>

UPDATE (06/29/2007):
on some Smartphone and Pocket PC models (the iMate K-Jam (see THIS (http://www.modaco.com/The-only-REAL-guide-to-playing-back-Mobile-YouTube-videos-t256431.html)) Samsung Blackjack, the Moto Q (see THIS (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2045&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1), THIS (http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14843) and THIS (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=313961)), the PPC-6700 and the Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard rebrand) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=313961)), the player won’t start after then install. To fix this, you will need to follow the steps explained HERE (http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=1296950&postcount=1) (in THIS (http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?p=1296950) thread) (thanks to Malatesta for pointing it out (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2045&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)!)
the WM5 ROM Upgrade (AKU3.3.1) for HTC P3600 (aka Trinity) also contains Streaming Media; so do the Vodafone v1415 (the rebranded Vox / S710 – HTC’s original version does NOT contain it) and the Ameo (see THIS (http://www.modaco.com/The-only-REAL-guide-to-playing-back-Mobile-YouTube-videos-t256431.html)). Finally, according to Ed Hardy (http://forum.brighthand.com/showpost.php?p=1545307&postcount=2), HTC includes a version of of its Streaming Media application with both its Pocket PC and Smartphone devices running Windows Mobile 5.
on some devices like the cingular 8525 (see THIS (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1187991) and THIS (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=313961)) (rebranded HTC TyTN / Hermes), the playback would start but stop at the end of buffering. Altering the buffering parameters doesn’t help. Fix unknown. Interestingly, other TyTN / Hermes (see the problems with the 8525) users have reported no problems (see THIS (http://www.modaco.com/The-only-REAL-guide-to-playing-back-Mobile-YouTube-videos-t256431.html)).

You rock! The instructions in step 1) got me youtubin' on my 8125. That was one of the most confusing series of installations I've ever done, and there's no way I would have ever figured out to do that even after poring over many of the threads here multiple times. But whatever the case it's working now, so thanks.

Now I can watch crappy home videos! Heh. :) Of course it's more about the principle, knowing that I can show this off to people while explaining that the iphone isn't all that ...

Did you use the CAB file? It automatically sets the file associations (that is, automatically starts the player).

If you didn't, there is an explanation of manually assigning the player to the file type in the linked XDA-Dev thread.

Hi

Not sure which cab or link you mean, if you mean HTC streamingmedia cab, I already have streaming media installed as part of the OS rom upgrade, if you mean the link in the registry \HK_LM\software\microsoft\shell\rai\wmplayer.

I have already changed it to the streaming player and I have also left it as it is on WMplayer, nothing happens, it doesn't even start wmplayer when I click on watch video on m.youtube.com

I think I understand how Streaming Media Player now works. I first open up Internet Explorer and type in the address there and Streaming media Player opens on its own. Can anyone confirm? If yes, how can I save the different addresses if I have more channels to watch? Can I copy the links off my computer and paste them on a folder on my SD Card just so I can tap them afterwards if I want to connect to that site again?

Hi there!
Have anyone been successful in installing the Streaming Media cab file in the Storage Card memory? I choose Storage Card, but in reality it was installed in Main memory under Windows\. Maybe this is necessary for the software to be able to work properly?
It works OK for me under the Windows folder.
BUT memory gets really overloaded with software installed in Main memory on my device. I have installed all software that is possible in Storage card memory. And then device works nice and quickly.
But with Streaming Media software that occupy some megabytes, everything’s gets much slower now.
Does anyone have a solution, thanks!

I must at the same time thanks everybody that have been involved in working out a solution for getting rtsp to work in PPC, WM5 and WM6.
Funny enough that was not before Mobile YouTube was introduced recently that make things to happen very fast for us!
When I purchased my HTC Universal in Nov 2005, there was absolutely no solution available for seeing streaming media with RTSP/3GP. And I live in Sweden and the only format they stream here in Sweden for Live TV is with RTSP/3GP. So for nearly 2 years I have searched for a solution and softwares, and many promises have been given, but nothing happen before YouTube got Mobile. So I thank YouTube, even if I have never visited that site by myself.
I am curious how you folks over there manage the cost of watching streaming broadcasts over the 3G net?
Here we pay around $3 dollar per Megabyte GPRS.
That means that we pay here for one hour streaming Live-TV with around 0,3 Mbits i speed over $ 400 dollar…
One can also take a monthly subscription, that cost around $ 30 dollar, but then you are govern what the operator wants you to see, and with very small picture size. It is not a flat rate that makes you surf and stream whatever you want, but just on Portals they decide for you. The range of TV-stations are very limited and mostly worthless, just some free TV-stations that dont send out any of value.

But I am still happy of at least having the possibility to be able to watch steaming TV now, even if I only can afford watching a few minutes per day!

I'm having the same problem ... also using PDAViet 4.0.0.0.4. When I click on Watch Video, the IE would load then nothing happens. In Opera 8.65, it would give an error message about invalid file format rtsp://m.youtube.com/......./xxxx.agp can't be read or something like that

In another thread, I read that we have to change the file association for rtsp using SKTools, but I can't find the rtsp in the list in SKTools.

I'm stuck at this point, waiting for other for solution.

Btw, I notice using PDAViet 4.0.0.0.4 when using WiFi, the phone will get really hot. Last nite my Prophet went up to 43 degrees celsius (109 Fahrenheit). Kinda scary...

Hi

I got it to work now, I did the upgrade again so I could start from scratch, now I have to edit the registry in the HK_C_root/rtsp section, I needed to add some new key and string to point to streamingplayer.exe.

You can search for it, it's in the forum, then it's working on m.youtube to the streaming media player.

Hello all,

I would like to use this post to say thank you to Menneisyys. The video works flawlessly without a glitch. There is a drawback though. It works only with WIFI. It does not work with EDGE network at all. When I connect via EDGE, it gives me the error code, can not find network. I guess I have to switch to WIFI when I want to view Utube.

Again, thank you very much for your clear instruction, Menneisyys.

Calls the HTC Streaming Media app fine from PIE and buffers to between 92 - 97% then closes and returns to IE. I've tried just about everything but don't give up too easily. Hopefully a resolve is forthcoming.

Frustration Deluxe...

Thanks for all the insight so far, though.

I'm using the Cingular 8525 with the unofficial WM6. I've followed the original post's instructions and I am also receiving the 97% buffer crash.

However, I wanted to thank the original poster for putting together an incredible tutorial.

I just installed the WM6 rom on my Treo 750 and then the Streaming Media cab file. I went to m.youtube.com and clicked on a watch video link and it gives me the "Sorry, there was a problem with StreamingMedia.exe" file..

Anyone else have this issue?

When I click Watch Video.. instead of Streaming Media launching.. RealPlayer launches and tries to stream and I get a "Failed to Connect" error.

Try reassociating the new media player with 3G files by, for example, re-installing the CAB file.

If you want a YouTube Player on your mobile device with the ultra ultimate in HD TV look a like H.264 video resolution quality and with theater like stereo audio sounds for your A2DP headset, with built in quick key connection technology, works with just about all WM5 and WM6 smartphones/PPC devices and wifi is not even required, just go to http://www.youtube.com via your phone's web browser and get the ultimate YouTube connection! If this is what you have been looking for then follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319226 {ALL DOWNLOADS ARE IN POST NUMBER (1)} Think about it, what is the use of having a YouTube Player on your mobile device when you really cannot view the videos and the player has very very poor video resolution quality. You will never ever have this problem with WizzStar* The Superior Product, A Strong And Simple Solution, The Revolution Is Now In The Palm Of Your Hands. USE THIS VIDEO AS A TEST SCALE USING THE WIZZSTAR SETUP {"HONEYROOT -WHERE I BELONG"} YOUR VIDEO WILL BE CRYSTAL CLEAR, WITH VIBRANT COLORS AND THE THEATER AUDIO SOUND WILL BE SMOOTH AS SILK. YOU CAN GET THIS TEST SCALE VIDEO AT http://www.youtube.com TRY IT NOW, SEE THE DIFFERENCE AND BE AMAZED.........!*

What's up everyone, this is my first post and hopefully you'll find it most helpful. (First of all, thank you all for a wealth of information. I enjoy being here.) [yeah yeah, now shut up and say something] (OK).

http://m.youtube.com works on my Cingular 8525 running Schap's 3.60a ROM WM6. It already has a built-in HTC StreamingMedia (v2.20h). YouTube Mobile works on (some) EDGE, 3G, and WiFi. But for those that can't get theirs to work, DISABLE YOUR HSDPA AND DOWNGRADE YOUR SIGNAL TO 3G. Apprently, YouTube Mobile doesn't work on HSDPA.

Hope that helps. Oh, for location and service reference, I'm in California (U.S.) with Cingular/AT&T.

Hi, i'm having trouble watching videos through 3g on m.youtube.com.

My first Rom Dutty's V3.0 had no problem playing this video but now i'm using Schaps Win 6.1 rom and i'm having problems connecting with the video.

The streamingmedia player pop ups and says: Connecting.
Sadly though, it nevers connects and won't play anything.

Somebody recognizes this?

Wow! I used vTap for a short time back when I had my Treo 700w/x, wasn't a big fan after I found TCPMP with the flv option, but they have made some great changes. Don't really understand the plugin, I was hoping it would display some more info, think I'm gonna use this to YouTube while doing absolutely nothing.

No doubt this an excellent program, but I myself am currently going for the apps with numerous options, I'm eager to see this in further development.

Check this out...

I have Streaming Media and TCPMP installed
But going to http://m.youtube.com in IE and clicking any [Play Video] links do NOT work - I get "Failed to connect to network" message every time
However - if I "share" the video w/myself (emailing it to my Yahoo email on my phone) the PLAY VIDEO link in the email DOES work!

I may be wrong but this makes me think this has nothing to do w/whatever WIFI/3G connection I'm on at all. It's 100% consistent that SHARED LINKS via email *do* work, but DIRECT LINKS from inside IE at m.youtube.com *do not* work!

Anyone else have this weird behavior?

The dreaded "Failed to find network." message shows up as Menneisyys said if you don't have a direct network connection, e.g. if you are behind NAT.

If it's a mobile/public wifi/activesync network there is nothing you can do, i guess windows ICS doesn't work either, he tested it.

I can confirm that it works on my ASUS router via port forwarding and it should work on others. I have forwarded ports 50000 - 51000 to the ip address that my Kaiser gets on wifi, and i have set the same port range in streaming media application options.

I suggest not to forward all ports (1024-65535), just pick a range and forward it. If possible configure a dhcp reservation so your device always gets the same IP from your router.

I got the same problem as Krayziepop...

"Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file"

Read the YouTube Bible (it's sticky) and use an FLV / H.264 client instead of the crappy 3GPP.
