View Full Version : The anti-iPhone thread (BOO, HISS!)

In honor of it's glorious release today, I felt we needed a thread. :D
What a marketing sham, especially the "this is the internet, internet" ad. When it's limited to EDGE? Mmmm hmmmm.
I read a WSJ review in which Jobs was questioned about it. He claimed they were "sandwiching" 3G on the bottom with pervasive EDGE and WiFi on the top, which is much faster than 3G anyway. Hahahaha.
I'll keep my 8525, thanks. What say you?

I mean not adding 3G support is a tad silly since it will need a fast connection to get music at a decent speed.

When I had the 8125, I was disappointed by the processing speed and responsiveness of the unit. However when I got my 8525, I am much much happier. The increase in processor speed and maybe the fact that it's not the same manufacturer processor makes the world of difference. Now I'm itching to see a 1Ghz unit! Wheee! :D

M$ is so frigging stupid.. They could have TOTALLY STOLEN the spotlight from iPhone if they simultaneously coordinated the release of the official Windows Mobile 6 with the release of iPhone... They refuse to market their product, I mean, even with the BlackJack commercials they make NO mention of Windows Mobile.. Has Bill finally lost his mind with all that money he has?

a) WM6 has been released for some devices, including some Hermes models (that new Dopod release, for one).
b) AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone... why would they release WM6 for the 8525 prior to iPhone's launch?
c) Bill Gates could spend the money he's already got as fast as he can with both hands and still not spend it all before he's dead.

Beleive me when I say it, M$ has a say in some capacity as to when certain products can be offered... What M$ says is law in the world today.. yes some devices have already been given the upgrades, but I think a universal launch would have been good for the windows mobile based devices.. I can't wait until I see the first punk kid with his shiny new useless iPhone so I can give him a good flaming on what a REAL pda is..

all the retard apple junkies would still be retard apple junkies, heres a joke and a fact in one.
what can a microsoft user do that a mac user cant? shut the fuck up!
i swear they are all just hippys that think they can frigin change the world with there blogs about the dumbass insignificant boring lives, why do they have video blogs and shit like that? becuase they cant find anything else better to do...
hmm so, honestly in short. the iphone is an awesome "top of the line" (notice i didnt type revolutionary) phone for idiots... people that cant figure out ANYTHING on their own... apple was very smart in making a powerful phone with MANY shortcomings Idiotproof... that is the cold hard truth.
if anyone one of those mac luving morons did their research and actually bought the "best" phone, they would be heading over to htc.com
first is was the motorola razr, now its the iphone. Wm7 next? :) haha
i luv how macs lovers like to think that there macs and crap are customizable becuase that have different color schemes... lmfao. wow blue, wow red... what is the scheme to make the iphone not suck? oh yea it doesnt exist... its still just the overrated overpriced new crap fad from america. i cant wait til they use their keyboards muwhaha. "wtf i pressed p and it typed o, wtf.. w and i pressed e..." I'll love to hear that ring. :)

im not gonna get in this debate about ms vs mac or gates vs jobs. all i know is...
the iphone is a jerk off
all show and no substance
no mms
no 3g
on screen qwerty covers up things you are replying to
no video messaging
no browser plugins!!!!
safari only (kmfa)
no sim
no mp3 ringtones
plus the silly a** price
no REAL third party apps
that in my humble opinion means it is not worth the trouble. i must admit i wanted one at least to tinker with. but after reading specs. its a big hell no for me. the iphone could have been an htc, pocket pc/smartphone, for that matter-every phone killer and it fell short.

your name calling and 4 posts show us all who is boss.
if you read the thread then you see the list of things that the phone is missing. but by all means spend $500 for the iphone and $59-99 for the plan, and $29 each nintendo retro game, and $.99 each ringtone; while i enjoy my $39.99 plan with $29.99 internet plan, free .mp3 ringtones, and a phone that does everything the iphone does and more with no restrictions.

first of all, it's not hard to make a 8125 look bad.. Considering it's bulky design, slow processor, etc... If you had a Hermes you would be whistling a different tune.

First of all, the thread was meant in jest.
Secondly, comparisons were being made to the Hermes, not the Wizard. Perhaps the iPhone is superior to the Wizard, and if you feel as such, good on ya.

I'm ashamed to admit that I simply don't care for Apple, first it was AOL now it's Apple. More then the company I really disagree with the majority of it's customers that have this "you use a pc? your soooo a sheep of the goverment"-type of attitude. Although, not as vigorous I share Mog's sentiments. To me apple is a company that takes a concept, makes it somewhat idiot proof (I've seen my fair share of broken ipods) and calls it revolutionary. Afterwards we have the army of zombies claiming individuality left and right with the strong need to buy what everyone else is buying..... yes my friend your truly one of a kind.
cdfink08 everyones entitled to their opinion don't you agree? most of us are not being prejudgemental, we've seen the specs and the phone is not anything special, and it would interest most people here even less since most people that browse this forum are not looking to simply change a wallpaper. If you wanna give it a chance go right ahead, your money and all, but don't expect to change any minds since most people dislike the price/feature ratio. The specs are out there, it's not like we are guessing it sucks as a PDA, it's simply that compared to what most of us are accostumed to having our phones do the iphone is extremely lacking.

are you kidding us?!? i mean really.. MOST of us (not all) are not speaking highly of this device due to the specs of it (some are apple haters).. your 8125 out of the box will already do more than the iphone and the 8125 is what, 2 years old and the iphone is an infant... where is the comparison?!? at least my 2 year old can tell me when she sh!t her pants, my 6 month old cant do that (how is that for comparison? sounds about the same).. but seriously, how can anyone consider this a good product when they are pushing data services like downloading music and youtube, etc when the phone is only EDGE... this is a sub par product compared to what is already on the market, the ONLY advantage the iphone has is the storage.. but big f'ing deal, with my hermes (which has 3G where the poor iphone dont..) i can stream music straight off of my pc and it sounds just as good, i have over 100gigs of music there, the iphone certainly dont have that... well maybe you want the pretty interface, we have already duplicated that months ago.. Well at least in my hermes and wizard i can replace the battery, i dont need to ship it off to the manufacturer to be replaced... oh i can also send multimedia messages, something else this piece of garbage is lacking.. not to mention the lack of hardware buttons...
to sum up my drunken rant... it doesnt matter who made the iphone, what matters is that its old technology and doesnt meet todays standards.. its garbage and a cash cow for the provider to cash in on the idiots who dont know any better...

but seriously, how can anyone consider this a good product when they are pushing data services like downloading music and youtube, etc when the phone is only EDGE... this is a sub par product compared to what is already on the marketIMO this is borderline criminal marketing shammery... at very least they could offer a version that's 3G/H capable for a few bucks more. Even T-Mo offers G vs. E versions of the Sidekick and AT&T is just plain stupid considering they're getting their heads bashed in on the data front by Sprint & Verizon (despite the fact their marketing is also deceptive).

From what I understand (have read) that they will give the option to get a 3g model AFTER they troll it out in Europe.
I think the iPhone is an asthetically pleasing device, and I do like the interface ( but we can and have copied that), but what I dislike is:
1. Lack of a REAL SDK
2. Lack of 3G
3. Lack of customization
4. Requirement to web base any apps not bundeled.

purely speculative. i read that also on engadgetmobile. however they said it was just a rumor. and i doubt they would roll out the 3g model in europe before they roll it out in the states.
btw, did you read what steve jobs said about why he decided not to go 3g? what a cop out. he said they were really concerned about the real estate of the phone and the chipset for 3g would have made the phone bigger so he decided not to go that way. but in the same answer he said he hasn't ruled out a 3g model for the second generation of the iphone.
if he didnt rule it out, why didnt they just have a 3g model in the first place, that way you can choose if you want the 2g, or the 3g?
hes full of it. in my opinion, there is no 3g model and its not coming. they are hoping that the upgrade to att's edge network to compensate for the speed they would have had with 3g. thats mucho lameo.
edit: for the guy who said we were hating. here is a link to a thread with a disappointed iphone owner. he has a long list of complaints.

I guess I don't really care much for the iPhone. But, my opinion (and I think it's an obvious point), Apple is out to make a pantload of cash, not change the world for the better. ;)
So, they make a phone that's good enough to get folks all riled up... but not too good. They're going to make a killing on this 1st generation iPhone and then they'll roll out improvements (specifically 3G) on the 2nd generation iPhone, and on an on. I'm pretty sure it was planned to not include 3G just for this purpose.
Look at the iPod. I'm pretty sure they could have included the features that are in the 5th generation model in the earlier 2nd or 3rd generation verions. But they know people will keep upgrading, whether they need to or not.
Anyhow, that's all I have to say about the iPhone.
(...but it sure is pretty looking :D )

Quick, only to note it somewhere: I even don't want a Mac vc. PC war over here. But I must say that Safari on the Mac is a very fine browser, really! IMHO the best out there.
About the SIM card:
So it is true, there is no SIM card to replace? Are people getting a new number when they activate their iPhones or can they choose to use the number of an existing SIM card on their iPhone?
Now, of all things that were rumors about, only the worst ones have made it into the final iPhone. No 3rd party apps, no SIM, horrible prices, a non-replacable battery and only one provider! :( I was interested in the iPhone, until it turned out to be that bad...

according to speed tests their (at&t) upgrade was to get up to tmobile edge speeds. so that means that their edge was slower than tmobile's edge from the beginning.

btw, i was wrong about the sim card. there is a sim card but its not like you can swap out the sim and put in your at$t sim and think its gonna work. they have to activate the sim thats already in the phone. btw, there are tons of people who couldn't even have phone service the first day because it took way too long to activate the sim.

no fast internet
no real 3th party applications
i cant make my own applications
no letter recognition
strong ties to special operators
reasons why iphone will never be for me
big and bricklike
too complex
too many features people will never use because they dont understand how
reasons why many normal cellphone users will not switch
1 big general problem with both wm and apple is
they their features are very aimed at the american market
where people are still a bit less mobil freaks then asia and europe
which is why the intergration of sms and mms and such
leave stuff to be desided for people comming from nokia and sonyEric
worlds it's clear with the questions in the forum with people asking for features
1 big positive thing vs. the normal phone nokia world is
tons of tons of free applications
tons of tons of free ring tones
tons of tons of free background pics
these are things companys make money on selling
poor nokia people because the systems are kinda closed
so you cant just use your pc to download stuff or get online
my 2 cents

I encourage everyone to go play with an iphone and try all it's features. Try the touchscreen, try the keyboard, etc.
It's a major downer that it doesn't have 3g and is the main reason I'm holding off. It's also unfortuante that you can't load up your own apps (assuming there were some) and that there is not an SDK. But...
With all that said, Apple just kicked the entire PocketPC world's ass. That phone is everything that pocketpc's should have been 2 or 3 years ago except for the total lack of leadership from Microsoft and the PPC makers.
The interface is innovative and intuitive. The screen is purely awesome and the UI, colors, etc are really slick.
The touchscreen is beyond anything I've ever used. When you press a number on the phone pad it actually registers the number. I've had a jornada, an Ipaq, a PDA2k, an 8125 and an 8525 and all of them pale in comparison.
The device is thin compared to most PPCs and it didn't seem much larger than my 8525 really. It's very comparable to the PDA2k i used to have or a video iPod, except I think a bit thinner. If I'm right, it seemed a bit smaller than my buddies Blackjack.
PocketPCs have been able to play mp3s and movies for a long time, but try finding a device with 4gb or 8gb. And the sync/downloading from a PC is the most painful thing I've ever done. I have a 2gb card in my 8525 and loading up 200 megs of tunes takes hours.
The web browser is really nice. It's something 3rd parties have tried doing for PPCs and something MS is toying with. It's something we've all wanted for a while, but MS just doesn't deliver. I hit youtube and was instantly presented with a menu of movies. I wish I could hit youtube on my 8525...I mean i've got 3g speed, so I should be able to watch some movies right? ha. I went to my bank and logged into my account with no trouble. wachovia btw. My 8525 won't login there for some reason. I went to cnn.com it loaded up the homepage nicely and I zoomed into the stories are they were easily readable.
The iphone in general is also just plain easy to use. Everything I tried was easy to do and very intuitive. I was in the store and the web browsing seemed really fast, then I noticed that the Apple Store has them all set to use an 802.11g wireless. Nice trick...make them seem really fast...But, once I noticed I wanted to see the EDGE speed. In about 20 seconds I figured out how to turn off the wireless. The device automatically switched to EDGE and I continued my web browsing at slow edge speeds. I went back and turn on the wireless. In about 5 seconds it presented me with a menu of access points and asked me which one to connect to. I selected the Apple Store access point and it switched to it. I have used my 8525 every day for the past 6 months and I have a harder time doing that type of connection switching than I did with a device I've only had my hands on for like 5 minutes. Hell, I still can't get my device to switch sometimes or stop it from trying to connect to 3g when I'm connected to an access point.
I configured my email on the device in about 10 minutes total. 3 accounts. 1 gmail, 1 exchange server, and 1 pop3 server (which incidently doesn't work on my 8525 with any rom but the original cingular 8525 rom). They all worked, no problem.
Is the iphone perfect? no. But it shows how truly lazy the PocketPC makers and Microsoft have been.
Microsoft, HTC, and all the pocketPC makers need to wake up. If they don't they can just quit making the crappy devices they have been, because no one will buy one. Apple's going to have sold like 3 million of these by the end of next week. They have 5 million prepping for Europe release around the fall of the year and the rumor is that Europe might get the 3g model.
And you can bet that all the flaws people have found so far, will be addressed. Steve Jobs has already indicated that they will have several addressed in the next update. Wow, imagine that, the maker is updating the software...I don't have depend on the charitable work of strangers to cook up ROMS and risk bricking my device to get an update.
I want a thin pocketpc with a fast processor. 8gb memory minimum with perhaps as much as 64gb as an option. It needs a large multi-touch awesome color screen that when i touch something on the display it actually registers it. It needs a real web browser, not some piece of crap that barely supports modern web standards (or doesn't even support). And MS needs to support them all, not individual carriers and makers...
end rant...

@angelis
Good for you, but personally I'm not impressed in the least with it, then again "revolutionary" interfaces and pretty-ER screens have never been my thing. Aside from the apparently great screen this phone has nothing that I would want, but that's me I place funcionality over looks any day.
Anyways your entitled to your opinion, but I just can't comprehend where ....Apple just kicked the entire PocketPC world's ass. That phone is everything that pocketpc's should have been 2 or 3 years ago...
I mean it has bigger on board storage then PPC's (but ppc's have memory card slots to fix that) as I said a better screen (PPC can easily upgrade to something similar) and that's about it for me. Anything software based can be improved on PPCs you mention you have problems logging on to bank accounts and such, I have a Wizard and I check my bank of america, wachovia, and paypal accounts and have never had problems. I also track packages regularly on UPS, and FedEx with no problems (I admit you either have to do some scrolling or have the text disorganized) even that though, there's a few browsers in development for mobile phones that should get better and better.
You mention that you won't have to depend on strangers to update your device or something, is that a bad thing? I enjoy the community feel of things end-users can customize. As much as anyone says I can't see this thing competing with a PPC, Palm, or Symbian device, the functionality and freedom is simply not there. Sure it beats the razr, krazr or whatever other purely novelty phone motorolla comes out with, but I'll keep my wizard (I just adquired a T-Mobile Wing that I'll be getting later on tonite, that should hold me until the Kaiser rolls around).
*edit* I forgot to say I have my issues with how HTC does business as well, the Wing and the MDA are basically the same phone, the only reason I got it is because it got a very good deal, and for that matter so is the Touch. That as well as other things, but for the sake of staying on topic I'll save everyone the rant *edit*

As for the Sims card. According to my friend at AT&T it has a removable sims card that requires the use of tweezers to remove, & no other sims card can work. So if you have 2 iPhones you can't switch the sims cards in them, not that you would want to but if you did to bad.
Now with that being said, heres my first thought, if I bought an iphone, activated it used it for a couple months decided to sell it to go back to my PPC how is this going to work since once a sims card is activated it can't be changed? You want to change your # you get a new sims card.
The only feature the iPhone has thats worth anything are the finger scrolling (which we'll have soon with touchflo) & the storage space, but we have an advadtage on that as well, SDHC supports up to 32gig, granted it'll be a while before we see that amount but we can get a 4gb card now so, I got my 8525 for 99.99 after $50 rebate. & I can by 2 4gb cards & not spend more than 250 for everything. Do 3 times as much as the iPhone & use just about any music format I choose.

This iPhone, like the iPods will be a huge hit. Unfortunately. The general public that's not very tech savy will jump on this bandwagon for sure. Look at the iPod. Pathetic. I bought my wife the Creative ZEN. It does absolutely everything the iPod does, BUT MORE. Plays DivX, has a radio, recordable, etc.... But most of the general public won't really give anything other than an "iPod" a 2nd look.
And that's what will happen with this iPhone. And I'll be laughing at each and every one of them. :P

the iPhone YouTube thing is just http://m.youtube.com, and if you have WM6 with the "Streaming media player" you can do EXACTLY what the iphone does ... browse the same videos, and play it in a "youtube player" (although it looks like WMP)
not exactly innovative as a month before the iPhone was released i was watching the same videos that Steve boasts about being able to do on the iPhone ...

Here is a lesson about our society...
appearance is much more important than substance...
hence that whole first appearances thing, once again is proved true.
My wiz is a brick by comparison, it's clunky, not very sleek or sexy...much like me after having my twins...but it gets the job done, and does that job well...and with some "makeup" (thank you cLaunch, etc)it has become sexy enough...without sacrificing it's substance!!
For all the people who know nothing about real ppc's, bragging about their iPhone...all I have to say is I hope my bladder can withstand all the laughing.

I just love how google ads is giving me iphone propoganda when this forum has nothing but lovers for the device.
We had to write a case about it in class and I had to explain how retarded it was and how phones released a few years back had more features than it did.
like some of you mentioned so many 'uninformed' (my bad :p its just they keep shoving it wherever I go I have to filter engadget and other sites just to read stuff) out there, I can't believe there are so many people paying so much now for a piece of crap that should have been launched 3 years back.

Steve Jobs and Apple are the geniuses of marketing. For years I've asked people why they buy I-Pods when they could have a great HTC product which has far more features for the money?
It's all about marketing "coolness". They've marketed the I-Pod so well that you're not considered "cool" if you don't walk around mindlessly with your I-Pod in hand and earphones in your ears.
The I-Pod really isn't an extraordinary device. It has a simple interface and was packaged in an attractive design. The most important thing about it was it was marketed right and they got there first.
Apple was so successful selling the device to the simple minded masses (dare I call them Morons?) and knew that if these simpletons ever woke up enough to realize that they could have a phone, music player (even one which could wirelessly stream music to headphones), and internet browser in one package and Apple didn't offer one, they'd be in trouble. So, along comes the I-Phone (Hey, maybe "I" stands for "Idiot". That makes a lot of sense.)
Apple will sell a crapload of these devices to the same idiots who purchased Idiot-Pods. (Darn, I knew I should have bought Apple stock when I first heard of the I-Phone!!) These people represent the largest market. Apple will do very well with this dumbed down device just like they did with the I-Pod.
If you don't have an I-Phone, you just aren't cool.
On the other hand, I would love HTC to offer at least one model with a larger screen and keeping the keyboard (perhaps the addition of a track ball next to the keyboard would be a nice touch.)

Holy Sweet Mother..... $260????? for all that? THAT my friends is what you call BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. Oh and I wouldn't mint making the dropping IQ statement in an mac forum, there answer is pretty predictable. I would rather buy a Sansa or a Zen any day over an ipod.... but since I have my trusty wizard I need neither. It's not that I "hate" apple I mean that company has nothing to do with me, what I dislike a bit is the attitude it's customers have. Those apple commercials with the kid supposed to represent mac and the old duffy guy a pc basically portrays what most think.... and I'm sorry I've met a few mac users and none of them really know squat about tech, and are not what I consider to be "cool"... more what I consider wannabees. The reasons they got the mac's is because they had enough money for it, and my favorite reason put into words by one of them is "hey! according to my friend these are the same guys that make the ipod" I laughed so much when they told me that that I felt someone had punched me in the gut.

im not gonna get in this debate about ms vs mac or gates vs jobs. all i know is...
the iphone is a jerk off
all show and no substance
no mms
no 3g
on screen qwerty covers up things you are replying to
no video messaging
no browser plugins!!!!
safari only (kmfa)
no sim
no mp3 ringtones
plus the silly a** price
no REAL third party apps
that in my humble opinion means it is not worth the trouble. i must admit i wanted one at least to tinker with. but after reading specs. its a big hell no for me. the iphone could have been an htc, pocket pc/smartphone, for that matter-every phone killer and it fell short.

sigh, as good as i was hoping the iphone to be, it wasnt. i have a 8525 and am happy. but my dad on the other hand showed up with this simpleton device one day.
At first i thought it was interesting, but after a day's usage, i'll stick with my 8525. the iphone is missing the most basic of features and if it does have them, you must have to be a genius to use them.
cons
-can you beam?
-can take nice 2.0mp photos but no vids?
-if you don't d/l itunes your screwed, no way around it
-and ultimate laziness, no programs close. they go into a sudo stand-by until you access it again, can be very frustrating
p.s. it peaked my dad's interest in getting an apple pc, i told him "don't embarrass me"

I was hoping too. The real killers for me are the crippled Bluetooth (worse even than what Verizon does to their customers) and the antipathy toward development for the platform. If the iPhone had a native SDK I might have hocked my 8525 on eBay; the promise of all that great Mac software in my pocket was just too much of a siren call to resist. I don't even really care about 3G; all the 3G plans you can get are too expensive for me and I don't live in an area where you can get it.

Hi,
After reading all the specs it is clear that i-phone is not a PDA in the first place, not even a smart phone as there's no possibility of any third party specialized softwares(eg.I use skyscape's).
It is an i-pod with a phone, that's it.Just because it has a trendy TOUCH-SCREEN should not be the criterion to compare it with the PDAs.IT DOES NOT DESERVE THAT HONOUR.
No doubt it looks nice, but that is all.I know many people who bought Jasjar-Exec-just for the swivel screen and knowing zilch about its capability.
Whoever wants i-phone would get one, ignorant people are bound to be impressed with only looks and not the functionality.

because of it, people are getting more and more stupid and saying annoying things to us such as "first ever touchscreen phone" and they make it sound like its the only phone with an OS. they also arent aware windows phones exist, are so much better, and do much more things, such as allowing 3rd party apps.
another thing i dont like about the iphone is it has no buttons! this means space must be reserved on the screen as buttons. say if they ever do get games on it, you will need to waste half of the screen for buttons.

And yet, every single person who has purchased an iPhone has supported a giant corporation that was sued for and was obviously complicit in helping the US government illegally wiretap US citizens. That doesn't sound very cool to me at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way the iPhone looks better than the Kaiser is that it's got a reinforced screen.
Touchscreen? Check
MP3 player? Check
Makes and receives calls, texts and emails? Check
The Kaiser also has:
GPS, 3G, HSDPA, a real keyboard, the ability to switch memory cards, the ability to change the battery, the ability to Copy and Paste, the ability to change the SIM, the ability to install more software...

Hi to everybody, this discussion made me thinking about HTC marketing policies, compared to Apple's...
I mean, Steve Jobs is doing his job well, he made the average consumer think that iPhone's technology is 5 years ahead, which is clearly b***t, but that's ok since this market is clearly emotionally-driven otherwise I cannot explain why so many people are buying that Apple thing...
What is not so clear is why HTC is not pushing its products properly: better features, better value for money, better customization, better compatibility with microsoft,etc...I tried the iPhone when I was in N.Y. (I'm Italian,no IPhone here yet), and I must say that even the interface has not excited me...my WM6 Tytn with spb mobile shell, phone suite & weather is really more user-friendly,without mentioning all other applications...
I'm wondering why I cannot see any advertisement or effective marketing actions for HTC products (apart in ultra-specialized magazines)!
Is this situation different in US or other countries? The point here is not whether hermes is better or not (clear) but why HTC is not targeting the common customer (meaning potential customers different than professionals or tech experts)

Hi to everybody, this discussion made me thinking about HTC marketing policies, compared to Apple's...

Being in IT and having a WM device I always get the "you're so technical" stares and comments. However, slowly but surely most companies are realizing the benefits of a WM device over anything else out there. I work in an all blackberry environment and not a day goes by when I don't have to fix some stupid blackberry with a stupid BES problem. By comparison my Wizard looks like an angel. It gets its email without extra licensing fees, full internet, native Office compatibility and the rest. I have brought this up in the past with my superiors but they don't quite see a move happening because of budget constraints. Last company I worked for only allowed Blackberries and Palm OS Treos connected via Goodlink. Money wasted in licensing fees for both BES and Goodlink servers could have been used to purchase new WM devices and upgrade Exchange. But no...
Enter Apple... the "bleeding edge technology without the hassle" company. A new product in the already stagnant cell phone market. Granted, it is a new approach to mobile telephony for most users, but that's all it is. Its technology simply doesn't fit my lifestyle. Its features aren't impressive and its lack of third party apps (at least for now) is just sad. A few partners here at the lawfirm I work at went out and bought the iPhone. Then they're coming to me and asking to get their Exchange email connected. Well... regardless of how much money one wastes on crap, it isn't nice to be told that what you bought for 500 dollars is nothing but crap. So I set them up with Outlook Web Access. Sadly, over EDGE that mother is slower than W Bush's brain processing power. So they look at me all perplexed when I then suggest that they use its WiFi feature to speed up the connectivity. It is in those instances that I hide my Wizard... Job security is important, not to mention it will allow me to get the Kaiser in a month and a half :)
But to go back to your original thought...
WM devices are apealing to tech freaks like us, and people we have converted into tech freaks like us. We like them because we know what they can do, not to mention the fact that we can screw with them as much as we want and keep them alive (for the most part).
But, if WM devices are to succeed, they need to be more heavily introduced to the business world. Cost benefits, ease of use, availability of addon third party apps, ability to VPN in, connectivity options, i mean there are countless benefits. A few companies out there are going all WM but thats a very short list. Being in IT I have the possibility to somewhat influence decisions of this sort. But the real decision stays with the big cheese on top.
HTCs marketing strategy should focus on businesses. Start with smaller businesses and slowly move up to the bigger corporations. I think of they agressively advertise their product it won't take long until the HTC brand becomes just as well known as Nokia or Motorola.
But I also believe that mass advertising simply isn't what these devices were built for. the iPhone appeals to the "cool" factor, the shiny new toy. We've all seen the Sony Style stores. Well, Apple is about that as well. The iPhone isn't a tool, it's an accessory. It's a Prada bag that also makes calls. WM devices can be overwhelming to most users, primarily for the lack of information surrounding them. iPhone... a whole different story.
But quite frankly, the more iCrap users out there, the better I feel about the purchases I make. Besides, when I pay for a device I want to pay for the components, labor, R&D, support and a little OEM profit. What I don't want to pay for is a name. Sorry Apple... I just don't think you're worth my money.

Microsoft has a very short window of opportunity to add iPhone ease of use and Vista style eye candy into WM7 before Apple releases its next-gen unit. I don't have an iPhone, but iDiots making video mock-ups on how to address its lack of basic functionality is a sure bet it's far from perfect:

Here's a link to info on some new Sandisk 6GB and 8GB Micro SD Cards being developed. 8GB of storage on my 8525 sounds pretty good to me!
"With these new cards, any mobile phone with a compatible microSDHC slot will have just as much storage as the largest-capacity iPhone," said Jeff Kost, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Consumer Solutions division at SanDisk.

I think like anything Apple makes it will be real cool in around its 6th gen. I am sorta surprised that they were so good at marketing old technology; I mean really, who of us that waited for 3G really wants to go back to EDGE?
It would be cool however if my Hermes had 8gigs and I didn't have to think about having too many programs open. And that iphone screen is dope, bright and hard, which will last longer and wear better than the soft and scratch-able one on my 8525 and soon to get TyTN II.
I also like the mobile browser, it is the real web. Now only if it had all the features of what HTC was putting out years ago...

I'm completely not a fan, even of the new one with the GPS and 3G, however there are some good points.
The battery life is pretty strong, even when using it as a MP3/Video player.
The Screen is amazing, esp the hard touch surface that feels very scratch resistent, and the size / resolution seems very nice, and the brightness is good as well.
The device is very responsive. I don't know what CPU or Memory they have used, but it is always very quick. It doesn't stutter when rotating the screen (liky my 8125 and 8525 have done).
But yea lol 3 positives for a butload of negatives, no thx.

Apple has won the "overhyping" periode of the Iphone. Something Apple is good at.
For the rest, there's not a single thing our HTC devices cannot do what the Iphone can. As a matter of fact, our devices our capable of much more.

You've created a WM Virus by the sound of it - thaaaat's baaaaaad:D
You could get it to play a tune and flash the LEDs while it does it - I mean you might as well make the best of a bad job
Mike
I was trying out some new things... Code loops, registry functions, file operations etc, and that was the most interesting thing to make...
Unless I go for some OpenNetCF action, the LEDs and sound may take some digging... (Can't be bothered to learn C++ so stuck with C# for now... Problems with that come when I delete the .NET CF required files)

I had a hands-on with a 3G today.
I hated that there was no smart-dial,
the black back had small but visable micro scratches almost within a few minutes (tried to wipe the finger stains with a cloth left a trail of small scratches..).
The GPS is useless (only to show googlemaps, but no real use furter).
Safary crashed (wasn't the software tested??).
no dock in the box..
But that, and a few other items* more made me cancel the order..
(*have to wait to get it cracked/jail broken, rediculess 3rd party apps rules.. etc)
There are plenty of new HTC devices to spend my money on, each with a better tweakability and usability.
And there are exciting new devices on the horizon like the Sony Ericsson Xperia (actually HTC builds the Xperia, but hey..).
So, nope, I won't buy an iPhone, i'll put my money on a new PDA..

I think the Rom and applications is the most important thing on the device (it can't be more important then the device because without the device there is no rom ) Let me just say it. If someone was able to port the WinMo OS to the iPhone, I would fall in love with it. I just don't like the OS. If I had the phone with WinMo on it, I'd absolutely love it. Someone should try and port WinMo to the iPhone. But I understand this would take complex knowledge and understand of WinMo :( I wish it was possible.

Uhm, well... I'm wouldn't be so sure...
Let's do a quick comparison (for Switzerland):
HTC Diamond
Without Contract: 899 Chf. -> 873.206 $
Swisscom 24 Month Contract @ 49 Chf./Month (48 $/Month): 499 Chf. -> 484 $
Orange (my current operator) does not supply it, as is Sunrise (third national operator)
No 12 Month Contract Option
Add to that about 200 $ for the Touch Pro: I'm basing this on the difference there was between the Prophet and my Hermes, when I got it 2 years ago.
[u]iPhone 3g Swisscom[u]
Not sold without contract (yet, Swiss law demands it, the are not advertising it anywhere tough)
Swisscom 24 Month Contract: monthly fee ranging from 25 Chf (24$) to 55 Chf (56$) per month.
Cost of the phone (varies from monthly fee, ranging from "more fee" to "less fee")
8 gb -> from 99 Chf. (95$) to 249.00 Chf. (241.856$)
16 gb -> from 199 Chf. (193.290$) to 349.00 Chf. (338.986$)
No 12 month plan.
No free minutes, calls cost from 0.50 chf/per hour.
No free sms (0.20 per message)
1GB/month UMTS/GPRS Traffic included
Free access on more than 45'000 WIFI Hotspots worldwide (around 1500 in Switzerland)

[u]iPhone 3g Orange[u]
Without Contract: 8gb 759 Chf. -> 737.222 $ / 16gb 899 Chf. -> 873.206 $
Orange 24 Month Contract: monthly fee ranging from 44 Chf (42.73$) to 99 Chf (96$) per month
Cost of the phone (varies from monthly fee, ranging from "more fee" to "less fee")
8 gb -> from 99 Chf. (95$) to 199.00 Chf. (193.290$)
16 gb -> from 149 Chf. (144.725$) to 249.00 Chf. (241.856$)
Add 100 Chf. (97$) to the above for the 12 month contract type.
The 96$/month contract as free and unlimited calls on all Orange and swiss fixed net (24/7)
and a 0.30 Chf/hour rate on all others (international calls included)
50 free sms per month
1GB/month UMTS/GPRS Traffic included
100 minutes of WIFI traffic/month, on more than 45'000 WIFI Hotspots worldwide (around 1500 in Switzerland)
Reference: http://d182134.tmp55.swisscenter.com/#prices_en
So, that's for the facts. Now, about MY current situation.
I've owned a winmo device for the past two years, an Hermes bought at a discounted price (around 300$ dollars) with a new 24 month contract.
That 300$ was not the actual price (that was about double with new contracts): I got is so low because I was part of a special Orange Switzerland "premium bonus pack whatever", so I can get further discounts (I've been with Orange since 2001).
Now, my contract is expiring next month, so I'm due for a renewal. I really REALLY want to get a new HTC device, because I've had such a wonderful experience.
But:
1. The HTC Diamond is extremely hard to find in shops, only importers (at an outrageous overprice, around 800$, WAY to much) have stocks. There was only one I was able to find, but they wouldn't make a price because it was just there for display and because nobody actually knows.
2. The HTC Touch Pro (which is my favourite choice, screw i900 and X1) has no release date set yet (and, from the looks of it, not before 2009).
3. I NEED a new phone: my hermes fell down a few months ago and is not working properly anymore. Battery doesn't last more than one cal, Touchscreen is broken (tried to get a new one, but the chinese ebay guy never sent it), Camera flash broken, ...
That, summed with the prices above is THE reason that made me wake up earlier than usual this morning and be second "in line" for getting an iPhone.
p.s. I didn't actually get it: I did a reservation for the device about a month ago, but directly from the Shop. Apple "enforced" a "internet reservations first" policy on Swiss operators... So I was a bit pissed off. Nothing serious tough. I can wait.

I don't plan on procuring one, either, being very satisfied with my Hermes. I DO understand and agree with most of the messages posted here, finding our WM devices to be more flexible and feature-rich than Apple's latest gadgets. But hatred is such a powerful word, and these are, after all, just devices ... tools, and toys.
But I AM curious, if so many folks are so down on iPhone, to the point of saying suicide is better, why oh why are there SO MANY THREADS that are giving us WM users just what we claim to hate so much ... iPhone UI's, iPhone-like music players, iPhone Iconsets, iPhone Task switchers, etc etc etc.
It seems there are - in actuality - MANY folks who wish their WM devices were actually iPhones, no? Many who are sold on the iPhone UI and graphics. Many who are clamoring for the smooth and fast responsiveness of that "hated" device. I dunno, maybe it's just to try to "show" the iPhoholics out there that our devices CAN look like theirs (but theirs can't look like ours?) Whatever the drive, there's a lot of momentum behind it.
Just some observations, I'm not looking to start any wars here...

I mean if the iPhone was like $50, I would certainly get it (Don't flame me for that T.T) But seriously. I didn't buy the iPhone before because it was in the same price range as my AT&T tilt and at the time the tilt was more capable. Now, if the iPhone was like $100, you could bet that I would've gotten it instead and I'm willing to bet that A LOT of people here would've done the same if their ppc was $300 and the iPhone was $100. (I know some wouldn't too so it goes both ways!). I know I'm probably going to get flammed a lot for that lol.

I went to the temple today. I saw it with my own eyes.
I was impressed.
It doesn't have USB hosting. It's expensive. Yada yada. It's a fashion statement with posers lined up two blocks down the street. But damn, the thing is beautiful !! If you have only seen youtube videos or ads on TV or pictures, it really isn't the same. You've got to hold it in your hand. The thing is really exceptionally beautifull. It reminded me of an industrial design art show exhibit I saw once with toaster ovens and lamp posts and toilet seats. Never minding the technology. Art is difficult to figure why it is. You know it when you see it but you don't know why or what it is.
Afterwards I went down the street to the Sprint Store and looked at the Touch and the Instinct.... Not even close.

Have you actually held the thing in your hand? Have you turned it over and over, fingering the edges? ....Really, have you?
Looks can be deceiving. dont judge a book by it's cover.

I agree there
But then again it is only on O2 :p (T-Mo ftw)
From the moment I heard about the iPhone (1st gen) and how "revolutionary" it will be I was thinking well what are they going to do most smartphones don't do now, and after seeing WM 6.1 and using the iPhone, WM was sold to me in seconds, iPhone is nothing more then a lame excuse for them to try and push into the market

Man ya'll some haters, I'll probably never own an iPhone but even I had to chuckle at the 3g commercial came on touting the new iPhone killer as well the new iPhone 3g. It was totally a needed slap in the face to the other phone companies. I welcome the iPhone as much as I hate it.

It's waaaay over-rated.
As it is, you have to jailbreak it to install any worthwhile apps. The apps you can install without voiding the software side of your warrenty can only run when open and taking up the screen... meaning no passive apps. As soon as you minimize an app from the app store, the iphone kills the app.
This was done to prevent 10 apps from bogging the phone down running in the background, but what about apps like WiMo has? S2u2 is passive, and although it is an iphone rip-off at heart, it's basis (a passive app that brings great functionality to a phone) cannot be duplicated because of the way apple designed the phone. Ultimate-launch, new messaging clients, all of that good stuff can't be done on the iphone like it can on WiMo
I feel there will never be a community similar to xda-dev with the iphone for this reason. Sure, devs are flocking now, but this tight knit group developing for free will never happen.
I find it funny that wimo is the open and freely developed and modified mobile OS, and apple, with their mobile OS based on Unix (and is a long sister to linux) is the closed off mobile OS. I would like to see how long a website would last that freely posted images of apples OS for the iphone, like we do with roms here.

Also to continue my rant, the iphone is deliberately designed to NOT be repaired. There is no way to get into the case without breaking the entire thing apart. Not even the battery is accessible. What the hell apple, what the hell.

I think if HTC got serious and devoted some of it's profit to a solid marketing team, they could do a lot and make quite an impact. Many people, like myself, did not even know phones like HTC existed. Good marketing, extreely good, thatīs the fact, so all not smart people will be caught by apple to buy the controled and limited youngsters most wanted phone.

Well the IPhone Looks nice, Looks like it is fun to use, has some nice features; however, my HTC Touch looks nice, Acts nice, is fun to use and has lots of nice features as well and there is so much more you can do with it that the IPhone can't do. I love my phone that I wouldn't consider switching to the IPhone. All I really need to make me completely happy is a 16 gig micro SDHC card or even better a 32 gig micro SDHC card.
What I like about the IPhone is the LARGE SCREEN, Multi touch capabilities and motion sensor to automatically rotate the screen to Landscape. Hopefully soon these features will be standard on all new HTC Devices.

I can't wait to see what these new devices will be like. The IPHONE will have much more serious competition once these are released if these devices are developped properly. I find myself getting excited to see what's comming next for WM devices. It would be nice to see the new WM Devices having breakthrough technology that even impress all these hard core IPhone users (hopefully making them all jealous and wishing they had one)

Well. That's because HTC are idiots and greedy bastards so they implant pressure sensitive screens into our expensive phones. And here you see the sexy sleek iPhone (no im not a iPhoney cheerleader) with it's smooth thermal sensitive screen. It literally is a joy to use it's touchscreen. I find no joy and more hassle in using my tilt's touchscreen. I love wm. But I'd rather have the iPhone's touchscreen. Now, if someone was to take the HTC Touch Pro and hack it's screen somehow and get another one with thermal pressure sensitive put in it's place, I'd pay well over it's retail price. That'd be totally worth it. Pressure sensitivity is now part of the past. Thermal sensitivity FTW!

Psssh. Did you think iPhone users had freedom? Apple can access all data that iPhone users go through. Passwords, what you're browsing, etc. You have no freedom. It's all logged. Although apple keeps it safe and doesn't use it for "other things" it is a security threat. They know every app that you have. They can chose to kill your phone and take out all the apps that you already paid for if they so choose. And for any reason. I think that was written in VERY VERY VERY fine print in the documents that you signed when you got the phone and contract.

I have never owned an apple product. I'll admit that their products have a great interface and get the job done, but usually at an excessive cost. I own a Kaiser (branded ATT Tilt) without a data plan because there is wifi everywhere on my college campus. Even though Apple has finally lowered the price on the iphone, the cost of the data plan contract kills it for me.
But my biggest problem is how crippled the app store is. Chances are that if I decided I wanted a program for a specific purpose, its on here and free.

You gotta hand it to apple for the way they market the thing they hyped it so much that they were always going to disappoint in reality but even now the truth is revealed there are so many loyal "fanbois" in denial. Take a look at some forums (e.g. mac rumours) you see someone complaining that their phone drops calls most of the time followed by a loyal army of folk telling that OP that they should feel blessed to have an iphone and to stop whining - if you complain about your iphone you are a troll!!

It pretty much is...
It has a few fancy settings pages (with about 4 things you can change), and a nice ish menu system, but to me, nothing beats WM for its combination of UI and awesomeness.
Hmm... It really is more than that.
OK, the other day I got to play with the Touch Diamond for the first time, and the main problem I had with it was that the TouchFlo 3D did not respond to my gestures immediately - there was always a delay after the input until, say, the picture changed or enlarged. This is where the iPhone OS beats WinMo with its instantaneous response, and likewise for the media player's interface (I'm not just talking about "Album Flow", which I barely use anyway).
And then previously most HTC's devices did not have the proper video drivers, so HQ video did not play well. I did not get to try this on the Touch Diamond but I'm sure the problem's solved now.
Of course, I may sound like I'm defending the iPhone, but that is because so far some of you guys are only picking out the burnt bits of the toast, so I shall also say what's wrong with the iPhone: lack of Bluetooth protocols, lack of MMS, lack of memory expandability, Internet browser lacking stability, restricted multimedia file formats and restricted cellphone networks etc.
I think you should have a proper go on the iPhone OS for like a week or two (with an open mind), and then you will see the best bits of both ends. I've owned at least seven HTC devices (and a new one due to arrive next week) before the iPhone, so I know which OS is better in which field.

How about comparing potential? iPhoney. Underclocked. HTC Touch Pro. Kickass. iPhoney homescreen. Pages and pages of glorified icons. WinMo. Anything you want that can be coded. WinMo. Win. iPhoney. fail. ;)

As Pocket PC users we should not even care about this thing.

WRONG. We should totally care about this. Before the iPhoney, no one cared and HTC thought we all loved our over-priced underrated crap. But after the iPhoney came, they all got scared. The Touch Pro and Diamond would have never been made if the iPhoney hadn't come out. So all hail iPhoney for making HTC work and ONLY for making HTC work.

Yes. It's hilarious. But! He never posted it when he tried to put on the wallpaper. I admit it's stupid and rofl thing, but I want to see someone try it and show it on video of when it gets bricked. Otherwise, I'll just think it's some way of some stupid kid trying to get money out of apple.

cmon man , i phone rocks , why wont you buy one ?
It has got music , touchscreen and al those new and latest stuffs , why aint buy one ?
My Prophet has Music (thanks to A_Cs wonderful S2P, it's like the iPhone), a touch screen (which, no matter what Apple say, they did not invent), and can run a far large amount of software on it, without stuff having to go through Apple first. Oh, and I can flash ROMs! :)
EDIT:
And, I can copy/paste, browse files, take videos and even send MMS messages! :)

Underclocked: well, I don't see the need to do so cos I'm not that hardcore anyway, but this is a valid point.
You do realise you can install a third party app (e.g. Summerboard) to change the homescreen on the iPhone (if that's your point)? Not that I change it often these days.

Totally agree. It's a pointless video on the whole unless he can show that it's THAT particular wallpaper that crashed the iPhone.
Plus I hope the kid sold the "faulty" iPhone so that someone could have picked it up cheap and easily fix it. (DFU mode FTW)

You mean competition? Definitely. Mio and HP have both gone quiet in the last few months, so HTC needs a poke on the back from someone.
And of course, without the iPhone we wouldn't have this thread! ;)

Whilst we appreciate the fact that WinMo already has a large software database, the iPhone also has a good hacking community as well, and they make loads of nice apps too.
But yes, I do miss the good old ROM-flashing days on my HTC devices, even though it could be a pain in the arse sometimes.
Copy/paste, video recording: this is what I am majorly pissed off about Apple - they don't give a damn about what customers want!
MMS: meh. Never used it in my life. Same with a lot of people that I know.

The so-called user-friendly iPhone is finally launched in India (officially) yesterday (I hated even the iPod for its user-non-friendliness). There are hardly any Apple service centers in India.
Some of my friends are mad about buying one as soon as possible. I am advising them to know the device carefully before buying that. (No third party s/w, fixed battery - something happens to battery the device is no better than a brick, no keyboard, over price, no video recording)
I understood, only those who doesn't know anything about the current technology will buy that crappy device.

I attached the price and plans for this, just compare it with the ones you have in your countries
I bet there is no country more expensive than here.
Anyway, even if they give it for free I wouldn´s accept that "friendly music box with a phone"

You are so right; however, I have a friend who just loves his Mac Computer so much and for good reason - He really knows what he is doing with it. He has his Mac OS, Windows XP and even Lynux Ubuntu Running on it all at the same time. He can switch from one to the other in a matter of seconds. Really cool. However, I think that he might have raced to the store to get his IPhone too quickly once it was made available in Canada expecting that the IPhone will live up to all his expectations. So far he is happy with it and luckily he hasn't had any problems yet, however, he does not seem to have that same excited glow about his IPhone when he talks about it and shows it off as he has when he talks about his desktop computer and what it does. One thing that does annoy him though is bying software apps through ITUNES. He has purchases several already (Not very expesive, but still paid for them) but some don't work or crash. (the worst was Tetris) - He paid for it and all it does is crash his phone - He has been unable to get any tech support to help either. This is the most annoying thing for him so far, besides having to pay for even the dumbest most useless app - which just is a novelty (Glass of beer) - I think he said he had to pay for that still and it is just for novelty.

I really want someone to hack windows mobile onto the iphone, then we would have something to talk about. but then again, the fixed battery, lack of expansion, would still make it a shitty phone. It's only saving grace, is that I own a mobile sandblasting company, and I am around clouds of dust and sand all day. the iphone has nowhere for the sand to get into the phone, and is holding up alot better than my titan

News just in (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7582197.stm) the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK are not too impressed with the iPhoney advertising. Apple's ad claims that you can access the whole of the internet. The ASA say you can't because Flash and Java are not supported meaning that a lot of web sites will not display properly.

It's also news at Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/27/uks-advertising-standards-authority-yanks-iphone-ad-for-being-m/), where they take a slightly less biased stance.

Engadget has the funniest reply from user 'Blayed': Breaking news!

anyone hear about the lawsuit?
An Alabama woman has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming the iPhone 3G's network is slower than advertised.
In a 10-page complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for Northern Alabama, Birmingham resident Jessica Alena Smith charged Apple with breach of express and implied warranty and with unjust enrichment. Smith, who refers to the phone she purchased throughout the complaint as "Defective iPhone 3G," is seeking class action status.
The lawsuit claims that Apple's iPhone 3G advertising campaign is misleading.
"Defendant intended for customers to believe its statements and representations about the Defective iPhone 3Gs, and to trust that the device was 'twice as fast at half the price'," the lawsuit states.
The charges in the lawsuit mirror widespread complaints about the iPhone 3G's reception that have crisscrossed the Internet since Apple and AT&T released the successor to the original iPhone on July 11. Affected owners have said the iPhone 3G will switch between 3G networks and EDGE networks even when the device is sitting still and that they will lose reception in the middle of a call while in a 3G-rich environment.
"Immediately after purchase, plaintiff soon noticed that her Internet connection, receipt and sending of e-mail, text messages and other data transfers were slower than expected and advertised," the lawsuit states.
After weeks of silence regarding the complaints, Apple finally acknowledged earlier this week that reception issues existed. An Apple representative told the Associated Press that the iPhone OS 2.0.2 software update, released Monday, is designed to provide "improved communication with 3G networks."
But Monday's update was labeled with the briefest of descriptions--"bug fixes"--making it difficult to know exactly what was addressed with the update.
The suit asks that Apple be ordered to repair or replace all defective devices and pay unspecified damages, interest, and attorney fees.
Apple representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
