Listen to us...jeez how GEEKY are we?
Ha!!
But hey, WM6 is important - particularly when you had it and it was cruely taken away (Exec > Ameo)
WM6, though not vastly diff to WM5, was the first OS to actually feel designed for PDAphones, rather than being tacked on. WM5 had a lot of good features, but still felt like the phone was an afterthought. A good example is the way if you called someone but they were busy again and again and again. It showed as a new entry in Call History for every attempt. With WM6, it groups them. Little tweaks like that make a BIG difference.
Cheers

I installed the livemessenger that I had on universal over the top from my cab file. Now it works fine again. Same version as far as I can see too.

Your device is not CID unlocked. You need to unlock it via IMEI-check. Then you will be able to update.

So once you have the WM6 upgrade files, what's the process for performing the upgrade? Would I simply dock the X7500 and then run one of the .EXE files? Or should I copy the files onto the X7500 somewhere and then run? And which file should I execute to do the actual upgrade?

Unless you are like me and don't have a clue what you are doing and risk it anyway.
The upgrade couldn't have gone smoother on my UK T-Mob Ameo with Vista on my laptop.
If I'd had any sense I probably wouldn't have tried it ;)

I agree on this occasion but DO NOT RISK IT IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR POTENTIAL BRICKING. I upgraded my Universals many times. Most of the time it went smoothly. Occasionally it went very badly wrong.....

Agreed with the sentiments here.
As a seasoned XDAer (XDA, XDA2, XDA2i, XDA Exec and now Ameo ((still wish it was called an XDA)) ) I'm almost accustomed to that 1% moment. However, for this one it took me a good few reads to get to the bottom of what I needed to do - which in the end was very simple - with all this SuperCID and IMEI rubbish. Looks like I didn't need to spend £20 prior to upgrade but hey, you can't take it with you.
If you aren't familiar with the basics like whether you flash a device via the PC or the phone itself, it's a risky business particularly if something DOES go wrong. Make sure you read alllll the posts. Bricking can be reversed, but if you aren't up to speed on what to do - and if "bootloader mode" is an alien concept, then proceed with great caution.

I once had a UK T-Mobile MDA Vario replaced under warranty. It was SIM and CID unlocked and had installed a vastly more recent cooked ROM. I took it into the T-Mobile store on Oxford Street after I managed to brink it during a failed upgrade. I just told them it stopped working for no apparent reason. They sent it off, a few days later rang me to tell to to collect it. The whole unit had been replace apart from the battery cover! :)

Most of the time the first thing they do is just Flash the device - they don't look at it to see what ROM is on it. So it's worth trying to get it fixed ander warantee but you can't complain if they tell you where to go!

Your phone is probably region locked so the only way you can upgrade to either of the ROMs posted is to make your Phone SuperCID (unlock your phone's CID). You may want to search the forum for posts on how to unlock your CID.
After you unlocked your phone, you can use any of the ROMS, but I would suggest you download this http://uploaded.de/?id=430xr4.
Or wait for the Dopod official release of WM6 rumored to be on July 11

I do not know of an alternative procedure...but..
There is an alternative but risky procedure to install a ROM on your locked CID by forcing the OS into your device using activesync/mobile device center (not on at bootloader mode)... Search the forum and carefully follow the step by step procedure..
I do not recommend this procedure but if you wanna try, its your call...

The point (as has been made many times) is that if you do not already known what you are doing, this is not the time to learn, what with this being the first ROM release. Someone will no doubt publish instructions in due course.

The ROMs posted on the first page are meant for HTC X7500 and T-Mobile Ameo branded Athena, so if your phone is Dopod brand or something else, you MUST unlock your CID by purchasing the unlock code at imei-check.co.uk - This is the only way of unlocking your CID (so far).
But, if your an X7500 user and you want to use the X7500 ROM then you dont need to unlock your CID.

Not exactly true. There are x7500's that are CID locked. Mine was (Dutch x7500). So, even if you have an x7500, you should be very careful and you should exactly know what you are doing.

You dont need to unlock if your CID matches the CID of the ROM where it was extracted...
In this case, the ROM provided here is WWE

Your sig says T-Mob Ameo. Do you have an X7500 or Ameo? Ameos are CID locked but the T-Mob ROM works with UK versions and (I believe someone else reported) German versions. I thought all HTC models were CID unlocked?

HSDPA - Since upgrading I've had this option available along with 3G and GPRS, what I'd like advice on is whether using it is covered by the Web'n'Walk Plus plan. I understand it's just a data rate and I'm really just paying for the data, but are there restrictions on using 'H'? I can't see anything in the TOS, but I wondered if you guys had heard anything?

Sorry, forgot to update my signature. I swapped my Ameo for an x7500. My comment still stands about some x7500s not being superCID. Mine wasn't.It rebooted every time at 1%. After running the IMEI-check unlocker, the upgrade went fine. Ergo, there was indeed a CID lock on my x7500, which they removed.
OT - I currenlty live & work in the netherlands. T-MOB NL offers various flatfee rates, starting at € 9,50 to € 69,50. I currently have the most expensive plan.
Pocket Internet Totaal
64 Kbps € 9,50/month (flat fee UMTS)
Pocket Internet Totaal Plus
192 Kbps € 19,50 /month (flat fee UMTS)
Internet Totaal
384 Kbps € 49,50/month (flat fee UMTS)
Internet Totaal Plus
1.8 Mbps € 69,50/month (flat fee HSDPA)
All plans (except the cheapest I believe) offer free hotspot usage.

first:
I had go to www.imei-check.co.uk, pay 20 pounds and get the unlock application and key.
second:
downloaden the SPL version from the first page. (thanx for that)
Third:
Installed the rom update
Fourth:
Rebooted the HTC and now working very very fine with de x7500 (WWE) version. The only thing that i want to know is why my system always is working on 312 Mhz. Not that i need more speed because it's much and much faster than Windows Mobile 5. but sometimes it could be handy. I can't control the speed. I hoped with battery status but that is not a solution.
I have a secondary phone (now the hp6915) and with the tool Magicall i can send all information like sms, e-mail and phonecalls to my hp. Very nice tool. Look in to that!

I've seen other people ask the same questions, and my original question should be very easy to answer for anyone who has performed the upgrade. And I think you're quite wrong, this is the time to learn, and help others with questions - which it seems you're not willing to do for whatever reason, but instead offering info that won't help anyone.

I've read that you should hard-reset and I plan to do so, but do I have to do a full hard-reset and format the microdrive or can I leave the data there?
Cheers!
I didn't even bother with the hard reset, certainly didn't want to go through the aggro of reloading my microdrive..

I did the supercid through imei-check the other day and with successfully upgrade with the x7500 wm6 rom....
everything is working normal so fat....
But I got a samll problem with the phone display when I patched it into vga mode with mvrtruevga......
I can't see the number or letter when I dial or entered in phone display but when I hit dial, I can see the number or contact that I just entered and connecting...
Any guy having the same problem like mine?
All,
I am having the same problem as described above by "parkertseng" with my phone dialer.
Once the Athena is upgraded to WM6 via the second (superCID) upgrade link in this same thread, the phone application works properly in QVGA mode. However when the MvRTrueVGA application is loaded, the phone dialer isn't undersized as it was in WM5. This time the phone looks and works properly, with the exception of the "HTC smart dialer 2.5", which does not respect the top vertical boundaries of the phone pad itself.
I have tried a couple of work arounds and subsequent hard resets, but don't seem to be able to fix the problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Presently, VJBigPhone 0.91 works to make the small keys bigger, but when applied to the new WM6 large keys and layout, the VJBigPhone pushes all of the keys off the screen to the lower right hand side (which makes them no longer visible).
In trying to better describe the problem, and since it does not appear that the smart dialer respects the top boundary of the phone pad's application space, I am not able to see the first or second entries displayed by the smart dialer.
If anyone has any ideas that can better help me troubleshoot the problem then please let me know.
Note: During one of my attempts to fix the problem, I downgraded the phone to the version used by jasjamming for the BlackMajik Hermes edition, then I used the VJBigPhone to take the true QVGA pad and make it the proper size, which did work to solve part of the problem. The only remaining issue at that point was that the version of the smart dialer was older or less integrated and did not allow for the auto-preview of the numbers from each contact as they are highlighted (when each contact in the dropdown recieves focus). Since I love the newer versions of the smart dialer program and the auto-preview of associated numbers, I was unhappy with the good looking and only partially functioning solution, so I hard reset the device again and am continuing to work on a better more complete work around.
Again, help would be appreciated, thanks :-)

All,
The WM5 load for my Athena allows for the screen to fully rotate in all 4 directions, the new WM6 load does not rotate in all 4 directions, rather is limited to two landscape modes and only one portrait mode. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have any recommendations on how to overcome this new limitation?
Thanks,
Bob

I only had three modes with my Ameo in WM5 :-/ Didn't know you could have it the other way. Was your device branded at all?

I think you are mistaken. In wm5, you can't have portrait two ways. So, there is really no change here.

All,
In response to the query about the brand of my Athena, it is a Dopod U1000, that was flashed with the following ROM after it hung up on me within the first 72 hours of ownership "RUU_Athena_DOPODASIA_WWE_1.24.707.3_105_6275_1.32. 00.10_108_Ship.exe"
The orientataion for this ROM with the thousands of dollars of add-on software definately allowed for the screen to rotate and to be used in all 4 directions. I can't tell you for sure if the ROM alone offered that feature or if it was included in the additional software, but I definately do know that it was able to rotate and to be used in all 4 rotated positions.
After re-installing all of the prior software and with having the limitations mentioned above, I am begining to think that it was either the ROM alone or a combination of the older ROM and the software that was loaded at that time, that allowed for each of the rotated positions to be used effectively.
Hope this helps,
Bob

I worked myself now through all these 34 pages.............
However, there are still a few questions remaining where I need a confirmation / an answer:
- T-Mobile Ameo German can't be upgraded with http://uploaded.de/?id=wbbw2u - T-MOB005 - version with spl,ipl and etc. Correct ?
- Therefore I need to CID unlock via IMEI-Check (already done) and can use http://uploaded.de/?id=0v9mm1 - flasher for SuperCID devices only
- What's about the keyboard ? My Ameo has a qwertz keyboard. Do I get a querty keyboard when installing http://uploaded.de/?id=0v9mm1 - flasher for SuperCID devices only ?

If your device is CID unlocked (which you seem to have already done) you can flash any of the provided roms. I personally used the HTC one (http://uploaded.de/?id=0v9mm1).
The attached file will let you switch back to german settings:
- Keyboard layout into german language
- Suggested words dictionary into german language
- Spellcheck dictionary into german language
- Symbols List into german language
Cheers
EDIT: If you also want location aware applications switched to german (like opera on my ameo) change the follwing reg-key to 407(hex) HKCU\MUI\CurLang (default value is 409(hex))

The full WM6 ROMs posted are WWE (WorldWide English), so any other language upgrade could result ad INVALID COUNTRY error
If you superCID your device you could flash ANY rom, full tmob, full HTC or flasher for simple OS rom.
A rom is done with IPL (more or less the PC BIOS) SPL (the system files, do you remenber dos formatting?) OS (with device specific drivers), RADIO (the Phone radio part developed from HTC and NOT form MS), EXT ROM (personalizzation, remember video calling, mms, are from ext_rom, but also the theme, opere, htc audio manager,...) .
The result of this flashing will be IN ANY CASE an OS having qwerty keyboard, bur should be easy to change the layout via a simple registry hack. Look inside the wiki, using google search
A WMphone is something like an USB pen, with some hardware around, and you need all the stuff IPL, SPL, OS, DRIVERS, RADIO, EXT_ROM, applications to transform this amount of hardware in a device :)

Just to allay the fears of those who've still not upgraded (I read through 35 pages and was still concerned, as I've very little knowledge of updating ROMs, only having done it a couple of times with an HTC Wizard).
I've a standard UK T-Mobile Ameo and I updated to WM6 on Vista Ultimate with absolutely no problems using http://uploaded.de/?id=wbbw2u - T-MOB005 - version with spl,ipl and etc and without any unlocking.
Download the file.
Unpack using WinRAR.
Connect Ameo and have Activesync connected.
Run the ROMUpdateUtility.
Wait nervously until it gets past 2%.
Go make a cup of tea.
Come back and view your WM6 Ameo.
Yumm!

Well, after all these success stories of NON CID UNLOCKED or SIM UNLOCKED UK Tmobile WWE devices updating flawlessly with WM 6 I am rather excited.
I very nearly sold my phone recently but managed to wait......
(Sorry Paul if you around ! I am interested in WM6 )
So I am downloading the file, and I am going to update without hard resetting or really doing anything apart from ensuring active sync was synced properly.
I have not done this for about 4 generations since my XDA 2.
I am scared as I have bricked 1 PSP this year already, I dont need any more paper weights.....
So here I go......(well in 17 mins once download is done)
I shall post my findings.
Well done Tupisdin.

I'm still running WM5. I didn't lose much data, though, since I have it backed up on my PC. I don't use Sprite anymore, since I've found it doesn't crash that much and I just end up doing a clean install of all my programs. Before, when I used Sprite it ended up re-installing the settings that made it crash to begin with.
Anyways ... I'm hoping WM6 will be much more stable. Now I'm trying to figure out where the "official" WM6 WWE HTC Advantage/Athena ROM is hiding. I've noticed it's not on the HTC.com site yet.

In my case I was using a QTEK 2020i, and I did a backup for emails/text messages using SPB Backup. Now I have an HTC Advantage running WM6, and I tried a restore from the backuped file.
Despite process went correctly, I wasn't able to see any text messages on the HTC Athena.
Pls note that the folder Windows\messanging was restored correctly with identical content from old Device to new Device

Hey Wiz, just did it using Jeyo Mobile before reading your thread and it works great, thks anyway for the advise, you guys are the best and this site is great.
acutally I connected my old device, so I had all my text messages on Jeyo Mobile, I did an export and saved the backup file.
Then I connected my new device, on jeyo mobile there is nothing of course.
I did an import from the backuped file and get all my text messages on the new device.

I think this ID thing is a bit over the top!
Considering they are not posting out actual goods, they dont lose much if they are scammed do they! I dont require that sort of identification when I sell actual goods on ebay. ffs I sold a car and didnt ask he post me a copy of his driving licence first.

Obviously, your device is not SuperCID. Did you unlock it via ImeiCheck or the Olipro unlocker? Your device needs to be SuperCid if you are using that file.

Do you have X-Button 1.5x installed? You may want to try deinstalling X-Button to see what it does to reception (see another thread in which I describe a few issues I encountered http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1378022#post1378022). In my case the difference with and without X-Button installed was just two big to call it a coincidence

Hmm, so far I have been able to reproduce the send key issue on the Treo which doesn't fail to show up every time I install X-Button 1.5x. The GPS reception is back to square 1 though ... poor reception altogether.

Hey Duttythroy,
Welcome to the next level. I call it the next level because this device does everything I wish I could do with hermes and then some more. There is a lot of RAM, ROM, Storage until you run out of stuff to installed:D Well, may be I am loving it too much:) My first impression on Friday afternoon was this device is BIG but then by Monday you will get over it and realize what you have now needs a different frame of mind.
Anyway, the answer to your question is yes that was first thing I did before even attempting to do anything else. WM5 was on the device for 4hours then it was history and I never looked back.
The only issues I have right now is finding a good case to hang on my belt without the keyboard, a more powerful battery, and a kitchen to play with. Right now I doing a lot of reading and waiting for another ROM (cooked or official).
Have fun.

TomTom 6 also knows the option of "builtin GPS receiver" ... are you sayin that one should not use that option but go for the "another NMEA GPS receiver" at 9600bd/COM5?

Upgraded To Wm6 On A Greek X7500, Cid Unlocked By Imei-check And Everything Went Flawlessly
Wm6 Functions Fully In All Aspects
super fast os i must say
i use igo 2006se without probs and destinator 6 and 7
gps locks much faster and overall navigation is smoother , especially with destinator 6 and 7
i have a feeling that the 624 mhz processor of the x7500 now shows its potential.
with wm5, os was sluggish, despite the 624 mhz (in some aspects the p3300 with the 201 mhz was faster than the x7500 in wm5)

The dopod asia U1000 update WILL NOT WORK for your advantage X7500, because your device is locked to HTC roms ONLY..... to use the U1000 rom you must CID unlock your device.

There are a couple of choices but not very different than what you have now. First you need to go to the thread and get Olipro's unlocker. Then read the many reviews that others have posted regarding the released ROM's and see if any are worth going to. Hope this helps get you a good start.

OK, I think I'm ready to take those steps to heaven. Having read through this thread in some detail, I would still appreciate confirmation before I brick the beast.
I have a locked UK T-mobile Ameo. It would appear that I should use the T-MOB005 version linked within this thread without having to unlock my device. Prior to doing so, I will ensure the battery is fully charged and will take out the SD cards. I will sync the detail to my PC (including the SIM detail)
Q1: Would it be beneficial to unlock the device before re-flashing?
Q2: If I unlock it and use T-MOB005 will the settings be automatically re-set, or should I take details of these before I re-flash?
Can someone please confirm this and also look at the two additional questions?

As there is not and will not be an official T-Mobilr WM6 ROM for the Ameo, you might as well go ahead and fully unlock your device, so you have the options of flashing ANY Athena ROM in the future.
Any ROM you flash to it at all, will invalidate your Warranty anyway. Let's face it, except for hardware damage or theft/loss, we have insurance for that, so for software, I wouldn't care about T-Mobs warranty and I'm on contract with them too.
By NOT unlocking your device and giving yourself options, you're playing right into their hands. My wife's had her T-Mobile MDA Pro (Universal) now for almost 2 years....why? Because having it unlocked and able to try different ROMs continually gives the device a new lease of life.:)
Maybe we shouldn't put 3rd party apps on our PPC's either, in case one of them has a bug that screws up our hardware and invalidates our warranties.
I think not. Each to their own I guess. Best of luck either way.;)

I didn't and wouldn't unlock my device, purely for the warranty factor. It makes no diffence anyway, as I have got WM6 on the device working fine with the T-MOB005 version.
As soon as T-Mobile release a genuine update, and I think it's only a matter of time, my warranty will be in tact, unlike those that are unlocked, where they can refuse to uphold it....

i started with htc x7500 black color. i already had WM6 installed (ATHE_WM6_x7500_flasher found on this thread).
i then tried using olipro slp to unlock and supercid my phone (whatever that means). i started the olipro program. the rom upgrade window (step1) popped up saying that i need to have at least 50% battery life. I had 40%, so the rom upgrade quit. however the olipro program went on to do what it needs to do, unlocked the device and then step3 and done (was it really unlocked?).
i was not sure if the phone was unlocked or not, so i charged the batter to 100% and repeated the processes. this time olipro went through step1. the device uploaded the patched radio.. the device then shut off and would not restart again. i tried doing a hard reset and no lock. the green joystick LED ligh turns on but the screen was black (no light either). eventually figured out how to enter bootloader mode (hold camera button and reset). once in bootloader mode, i flashed it with the ATHE_WM6_x7500_flasher found on this forum. the device flashed okay, and had wm6 running once again. At this point olipro asked me to go through step 2. asked me to check off the unlock and supercid boxes. it then flashed it with something and then on to step 3 and reflashed it.
now i have WM6 running. it seems okay so far. device information:
ROM version :2.20.405.1
ROM date: 6/21/07
radio version: 1.45.00.00
protocol version: 32.78.7020.19H
ExtRom version: 2.20.405.101
can anyone tell me if it's unlocked at this point? how do I check?
to make the most out of this experience, would i be able to flash with the "flasher for the supercid devices"? at this point?
thanks for all the work and advice:)
this is what the olipro window shows:

I think we've come to a consensus that we don't really want to put things into the ROM that are readily available. Second, you can't put commercial programs into a ROM. Only freeware, etc.

Step by Step Instructions for HTC Advantage X7500 (= Athena)
I've just upgraded my PDA to WM6 successfully after reading every page of this thread. I'm very grateful to the community here so I thought I'd contribute by helping all those who have pleaded for Step by Step instructions and for an alternative download link. Thanks especially to prpmlp back in post #202 who took the time to record what he did and which I followed. My instructions are based on his but with extra detail for those who need a bit of hand holding. Note that these instructions are only for the HTC Advantage X7500 (= Athena) and are what worked for me. I can't guarantee that they will work for you.
My HTC Advantage X7500 was bought in UK directly from a HTC distributer, untouched by any phone retailer, so does not require any unlocking or IMEI checking.
I used Windows XP Home edition but I've included prpmlp's instructions for Vista. I don't know which version of Vista he used. Note that some other users reported that they couldn't get it to work on Vista.
CAUTION:
Where I live we have electricity power cuts nearly every day. If you have a power cut whilst flashing your ROM your PDA will turn into a brick. You may not be able to get it working again yourself. So use a charged up laptop or a UPS if you can.
YOU NEED:
A) The correct WM6 ROM flasher.
Download file "ATHE_WM6_x7500_flasher.rar" (about 60 MB) from here:
http://www.rapidshare.com/files/45631977/ATHE_WM6_x7500_flasher.rar
or from here:
http://uploaded.de/?id=430xr4
On my pay-as-you-go dial up link connection it took 2 hours before the download failed on the "uploaded.de" site, and then a further 4 hours to download it again from the Rapidshare site. Regrettably you can't use download accelerator programs for either of these sites' free service, so if it fails you have to start again. I found the Rapidshare connection more reliable.
B) A copy of WinRAR to unpack the .rar file. Download a free trial version.
C) WM6 requires ActiveSync 4.5 or newer on the PC (Not Vista, it uses its built-in sync program). It's free from Microsoft and others. You don't need it for the upgrade but you'll need it straight afterwards for syncing your sparkling new WM6 with your PC.
D) Your HTC battery should be at least 50% charged or the upgrade process will abort. Mine was 90%.
INSTRUCTIONS
===== Both XP and Vista =====
1) Set PDA to Flight mode (you don't want the phone to ring just as you nervously click on the upgrade program, your heart might not stand it!)
2) Connect PDA to PC and wait until sync finished.
3) On your PC, in control panel open Power Options, turn off hibernation (not all PCs have this) and set display and hard disk drives to never turn off. Turn off any screensavers.
4) On your PC, stop all anti virus, firewall, background defragger, and any other programs or tasks that might become active during the update process.
5) Unpack ATHE_WM6_x7500_flasher.rar to the PC's desktop. It contains several files including the program that we're going to use: "ROMUpdateUtility.exe". Keep the files together.
6) Get a pair of clean underpants ready, just in case. Take a deep breath and then run the program ROMUpdateUtility.exe
7) The program displays instructions on two or three pages. Follow each instruction exactly, check all check boxes. The installation will begin. Oh yes it will, ye of little faith.
8) The PDA screen displays horizontal coloured bands and on the PC Windows starts searching for a USB serial driver. Windows XP finds and installs it without intervention. Vista doesn't. On XP the ROM update process continues.
XP users skip the Vista only section.
===== Vista only =====
The following steps for Vista are lifted from prpmlp's post.
9) On Vista the ROMUpdateUtility exited with "connection failed" (the PDA screen still showing coloured bands).
10) Waited 5 min and Vista displayed a message.. I chose the option for Vista to install the driver automatically ... another 5 min wait. Please note I did not unplug USB or touch the PDA during the above process.
11) The driver installed automatically.. then I ran ROMUpdateUtility.exe again.
===== Both XP and Vista =====
12) The PC screen and the PDA screen each display a progress bar. Mine took less than ten minutes to complete.
13) When completed the PDA restarts. Remove the USB cable to avoid any sync attempts until you're ready for it.
WM6 will lead you through the usual first time set up process.
Any files that you left in main storage or on microdisk will still be there.
Install ActiveSync on your PC if you need to.
Set your PC's Power Options and other things back to how you want them.

you need to go to www.imei-check.co.uk, pay 20 pounds and get the unlock application and key. then you connect your device via activesync, and run unlocker. it will ask you for unlock file(provided by website), select it and then cid unlocked device with you. have done all this. now how do i flash? just connect via acctivesync and run flasher or need to do something more?
can this unlock application repair a demaged Imaged Rom
I flashed it with AthenaUnlocker, but stop in step2 by 6o % and hang up
thx
